Powerball fever back as jackpot soars to more than $300 million

Powerball fever is heating up as wannabe millionaires have their sights set on the latest jackpot.

The Powerball payout for Saturday's drawing is up to an eye popping $300 million.

Powerball tickets cost $2 each and are sold in Florida and 42 other states Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The odds of winning Powerball are 1 in 175 million. For Florida Lotto it's 1 in 23 million. Florida joined Powerball in January 2009.

At this point the Powerball jackpot isn't close to breaking a record though it will likely grow before the numbers are drawn late Saturday.

The largest jackpot in U.S. history stands at $656 million won in the Mega Millions lottery of March 2012. Winners in Maryland Kansas and Illinois split the prize.

The nation was last gripped with raging Powerball fever in May.

An 84 year old Florida woman picked the winning numbers in the May 18 multi state jackpot of $590.5 million.

Gloria C. MacKenzie of Zephyrhills chose the lump sum of nearly $371 million rather than collect $590.5 million in 30 annual payments.

MacKenzie bought the only $2 ticket that matched all six winning numbers making her the largest sole jackpot winner in U.S. lottery history.

The winning numbers from the drawing were 10 13 14 22 and 52 with a Powerball number of 11.

The grand prize in the May 18 drawing surpassed the previous record Powerball payout of $587.5 million set in November 2012.
