Redskins Cowboys best and worst

Best and worst moments from Washington s 44 17 season ending loss to the Cowboys at FedEx Field.

Worst embarrassment The Cowboys were trying to run the clock out as the season expired. Instead they wound up with a 65 yard touchdown run from a backup running back as the visiting fans stood and cheered. That s a rotten way to go.

Worst rut The Redskins went 7 25 over the past two seasons. That equals their worst back to back stretch since the NFL schedule expanded to 16 games a feat achieved just once from 1993 1994.

Worst turnovers Washington turned it over four times and got one turnover back. For the season Washington turned it over 31 times and got 19 turnovers bad. That s terrible.

Worst debut Jay Gruden finished his first season 4 12. That s worse than Mike Shanahan (6 10) worse than Jim Zorn (8 8) worse than Joe Gibbs II (6 10) worse than Steve Spurrier (7 9) and worse than Marty Schottenheimer (8 8). That makes this the worst coaching debut in the Dan Snyder era.

Worst quote The first half was as bad as we ve seen around here for a long time Jay Gruden said when asked about his defense.

Worst cheers Probably those Let s Go Cowboys chants that were audible on Fox s broadcast several times on Sunday.

Worst stat This one from Boz

Hideous yr. Wash outscored by 137 pts. Only worse margin since '61 was last yr ( 144). Yes TWO worst Skins teams in 53 yrs back to back

Worst defense The Cowboys had well over 200 yards of offense. In the first quarter. With virtually nothing to play for. Against a defensive coordinator that supposedly had their number. After the second quarter they kind of stopped scoring and the game was whatever but when the Cowboys really wanted to score the Redskins appeared helpless at best.

Worst coaching Down 17 points with the game still in the third quarter I mean you need three scores regardless. When it s 4th and 1 at the Dallas 7 don t you just take the field goal Because a conversion doesn t give you a touchdown it just gives you four more downs. And you still need three scores. Just take the stupid field goal. Or instead you could have Robert Griffin III throw an interception that essentially ended the game.

Worst interception The one Robert Griffin III threw on 4th and 1 at the Dallas 7 that essentially ended the game. Though the other one wasn t much better.

Worst game David Amerson had a tough tough game. Tough game. Tough tough tough game. I don t have the exact stats in front of me but I believe 93 percent of Tony Romo s yards were gained by receivers Amerson was covering. Tough game.

Worst pocket awareness Maybe Robert Griffin III should get Twitter alerts when his time in the pocket has expired. On Sunday he was sacked three times one led to a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Dramatic irony is that thing you learned about in high school where the reader sort of knows more about the situation unfolding than the character. Watching RGIII in the pocket is dramatic irony.

Worst special teams disaster As usual there was at least one. This time it was a second quarter onside kick that was rather easily recovered by Dallas. And with that every single box on the special teams disasters Bingo card has been completed this season. Just in time too. Week 17 and all. We can start over next year. And no this year s special teams weren t quite as bad as last year s. Improvement your name is Blah.

Best chewing A tie between Alan Greenspan and Joe Gibbs.

Worst time management Either the Redskins sideline wasn t paying attention after Tony Romo was sacked for a huge third down loss on the last play of the first half or the Redskins sideline didn t think the Redskins had any hope of a decent punt return or even a block or the Redskins sideline had given up. I m not sure which is the best answer. But not calling a timeout there with more than 10 seconds left was odd at best and incompetent at worst.

Worst fourth down play On 4th and 4 in the third quarter the Redskins completed a three yard pass to Jordan Reed. Fox s John Lynch suggested the fault was on Reed for not running to the sticks. Either way it felt symbolic of this entire season sort of doing the things that normal football teams do except not doing it quite well enough invalidating the entire operation. Like why did we watch a receiver run a three yard route when four yards was needed

Worst apathy Cowboys Redskins. Week 17. In Washington.

The roar at FedEx Field when the ref announced that reversal was remarkable. It's Texas in Landover.

That awkward moment when you're standing in FedEx Field and you realize you're surrounded by Cowboys fans because all the Redskins fans left

Worst record setting DeMarco Murray achieved the Cowboys single season franchise rushing record against the Redskins in Washington. And then moments later Dez Bryant achieved the Cowboys single season franchise touchdown receptions record against the Redskins in Washington.

Worst decision Why were DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant playing in the fourth quarter Sure they wanted to get their franchise records but beyond that their only chance to improve their seeding was with a Green Bay and Detroit tie. That seemed unlikely. And those guys seem fairly crucial to Dallas s postseason chances. Heck why was Tony Romo playing into the fourth quarter Really why I just can t imagine what the answer is.

Worst facemask E.J. Biggers attempted to turn Cole Beasley s head into Beetlejuice s in the second quarter grabbing the receiver by the facemask and then twisting his head into an unnatural position. It led to about 15 penalty flags with which Biggers could have quilted a blanket were he so inclined. Or super cold.

Worst tackling part I David Amerson attempted to tackle Dez Bryant after a short completion in the first quarter but he forgot one of the crucial rules of tackling which is that you usually have to make contact with the player who has the football in order to tackle him excepting a magical potion of which Amerson was evidently not possessed. Instead of a couple yards Bryant thus had a 65 yard touchdown.

Hell of a tackle attempt by Amerson on Dez pic.twitter.com/ZakcKcHWL2

Worst tackling part II The other thing about tackling is that making contact doesn t guarantee a tackle. Like I m making contact with my laptop as I type these words and yet my laptop is not falling to the ground. However were I to grab my laptop by the cord wrap it in my arms and then fall on top of it the laptop would be officially tackled. The Redskins chose to type gently onto DeMarco Murray and he responded by running nine yards for a touchdown a run during which he was touched often but tackled not at all.

Best first career interception by someone whose face I likely wouldn t recognize Jackson Jeffcoat made a pretty spectacular play to intercept Tony Romo in the 4th quarter of a meaningless week 17 game. Lot going on there.

Worst way to lose a touchdown Jordan Reed had the ball in his arms and green grass in front of him and an easy fourth quarter touchdown. But because his helmet came off during a would be tackle the play was whistled dead.

Best speed DeSean Jackson continues to be faster than just about anyone else on the field. His first catch on Sunday was an innocent looking number that turned into a 69 yard touchdown catch. His eight catches of at least 50 yards this season lead the NFL ditto for his 13 catches of at least 40 yards. He likely also leads the league in catches of at least 37 and 45 yards but I don t have those numbers handy.

Best block Jackson was assisted by Trent Williams who has battled a litany of injuries but who was sprinting ahead of the pack to help spring the long touchdown. Even if this hasn t been Williams s best season it s hard to think of many more valuable Redskins.

Worst drop Linebacker Keenan Robinson making his return from a knee sprain dropped what should have been a sure interception and a possible return for a touchdown on Dallas s first drive. Instead the Cowboys took an early 3 0 lead.

Worst graphic As you ve heard since 2000 the Redskins have employed as many head coaches as the rest of the NFC East combined. Here they are.

fun times.. pic.twitter.com/qYlwgMOMBS

Worst suggestion Chris Cooley said before Sunday s game that the Redskins might pursue Ndamukong Suh in the offseason. A massively talented but mercurial free agent defensive lineman who would command a massive salary What could go wrong.

Worst inactive Wide receiver Leonard Hankerson was a healthy scratch and marked the occasion with a pre game Instagram post. It s been real FedEx he wrote. I learned a lot in 4 yrs lots of ups and a ton of downs. Don t kno if it ll be my last time in this locker room but I enjoyed every moment of it.

Mike Jones ( MikeJonesWaPo) December 28 2014

Worst touchdown interception ratio Washington s three quarterbacks combined to throw 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions this season. That s awful.

Worst divisional mark Since winning the NFC East in 2012 the Redskins have gone 2 10 in the NFC East including 1 5 at home.

Worst place Last place. Last place is the worst place. It s the very worst place of all the places. You can t think of a place you d less rather be in than last place. The Redskins have now finished in last place in six of the last seven seasons. They ve averaged 5.7 wins per season in that span. That s the worst.
