Home Movie Reviews

Entertainment Weekly

Unlike many kids movies Home has multiple morals to its story which it reveals through small interactions between the characters throughout the movie rather than an evergreen statement at the end. The combination of Home s layered message fun score and clever comedy make it a colorful choice for moviegoers of any age.

Vulture

Home errs on the side of sentiment and that s not a bad thing. There s a lot of goofiness to be sure much of it having to do with Oh and the Boov s silly syntax. But the film pulls back at points where others might double down. Instead Tip s longing for her mother and Oh s longing for acceptance start to weigh more heavily on the plot and the film gradually captures a sense of gentle but very real desperation. Warming hearts and jerking tears are par for the course in kiddie flicks. But it s rare to find one that has this many emotional crescendos and manages them all gracefully and cinematically.

New York Times

The creators of Home made an inspired choice in that regard for their little hero recruiting Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory for the job and they made another by pairing him with the pop star Rihanna. The result is a charming concoction with positive messages for younger children about conquering fears understanding outsiders and knowing yourself.

The film itself is a wonderful collage of dazzling colors and occasionally glorious imagery. The film just feels big in a way that frankly separates DreamWorks from its non Disney competitors. The films may be more expensive than the Blue Sky or Illusion films but you see that money onscreen. The picture achieves the balance of being filled with frantic action without necessarily feeling frantic and I should note that I noticed not one explicit pop culture reference. For those just going for a 90 minute babysitter or for audiences who just want a light and funny animated feature this one fits the bill and is most definitely better than the likes of Rio 2 Peabody and Sherman or Planes Fire and Rescue.

Home sounds like a gem of a movie The film also stars Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin.
