David Letterman had fun tweaking NBC and Jay Leno on today's announcement that Jimmy Fallon would take Leno's place next February. No love lost between them as Leno bested Letterman in a publicly played out derby to succeed Johnny Carson way back in 1992. Letterman bolted for CBS.

I got a call from my mom today (and) she says 'Well David I see you didn't get the 'Tonight Show' again ' he said in his opening monologue.

He also had a case of deja vu since the network earlier ushered out Leno for Conan O'Brien a plan that lasted all of eight months.

It seems like we just went through this Letterman told viewers. Didn't we just go through this Jay Leno now is being replaced and this is the second time this has happened. I mean it's crazy. He's being replaced by a younger late night talk show host what could possibly go wrong Honestly. They had pretty good luck with this in the past. But NBC God bless 'em announced the official date for Jay Leno's departure no mention of his official date of return however.

Still he refused to count Leno out. I happen to know Jay's got another job on network that has greater viewership higher ratings Univision. He's going there.

Leno had his own rejoinder in his monologue. Folks I got to be honest with you I had a really awkward day today he told viewers. I had to call David Letterman and tell him he didn't get the Tonight Show again. Awful Terrible

Leno also praised Fallon He's a hell of a guy He's going to do a great job while taking another shot at NBC. We've all fought kicked and scratched to get this network up to fifth place now we have to keep it there Jimmy don't let it slip into sixth We are counting on you.

And Jimmy hasn't even taken over yet and the rumors have already started. NBC says in five years they plan to replace Jimmy with Justin Bieber.
