If you haven't read the book The Great Gatsby tells the story of writer Nick Carraway (Maguire) who comes to New York City in the Roaring '20s. It's there the he encounters millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and his cousin Daisy (Mulligan) and is drawn into their world of lavish parties free flowing alcohol and romantic misadventures that ultimately lead to tragedy.
Getting this $125 million adaptation of The Great Gatsby into theaters has been a challenge. The film originally was scheduled as a late 2012 release with big hopes from producers for Academy Award recognition. But Warner Bros. opted to move the film to a summer 2013 release so it would get a higher profile release and not get lost amid the numerous films that came out during Christmastime.
According to insiders the move gave Luhrmann more time to work on the film's 3 D effects and to attract more pop stars to contribute to the film's soundtrack. That's a move that helped make his previous films Romeo Juliet and Moulin Rouge hits both at the box office and in CD sales. It may have worked here too The new trailer features music by Lana Del Ray and Florence and the Machine while previous trailers have featured Jay Z Kanye West and Jack White. The full soundtrack also features new songs by Beyonce Fergie and Gotye.
Only time will tell is the delay was a savvy move or if The Great Gatsby will prove a box office stinker like Australia his last big studio project.
The Great Gatsby is scheduled for release on May 10. Grant Butler Follow grantbutler
