LANCASTER Ohio A Fairfield County judge sentenced a political petition circulator to two years in prison suspended for three years on probation for submitting false signatures to the county Board of Elections.
Common Pleas Judge Chris A. Martin sentenced David C. Burks after a jury convicted him on June 5 of three counts of filing false signatures.
The offense is a fifth degree felony punishable by a maximum of 12 months in prison.
Burks 46 of Reynoldsburg who was a part time worker for Professional Petition Management in Columbus was convicted after a two day trial.
A handwriting expert testified that Burks signed most of the 29 names whose signatures were on a petition that he submitted to the elections board in 2011. The petition supported a referendum to repeal Senate Bill 5 which limited public employee collective bargaining.
One person whose signature was on the ballot had been dead for a couple of years county Assistant Prosecutor Darcy Cook said.
