Miley Cyrus twerks stuns VMAs crowd

New York (CNN) Lady Gaga has taken the MTV Video Music Awards stage covered in (fake) blood wearing a dress made of meat and as her male alter ego Jo Calderone.

But at the 2013 MTV VMAs Miley Cyrus stole Gaga's outrageous performance crown.

While Gaga came equipped with multiple costume and wig changes on her side Cyrus took over the stage with gigantic dancing bears and more twerking than viewers at home probably knew what to do with.

Miley Cyrus stunned the crowd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn New York at the 2013 VMAs on August 25. Her We Can't Stop performance featured Cyrus' now signature twerking and a crotch grab or two. After she donned the fuzzy gray leotard pictured here ... ... Miley Cyrus stripped down to a flesh toned bra and panties while Robin Thicke performed Blurred Lines with 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar. To receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award Justin Timberlake took the VMAs audience back in time through his jams from his new single Take Back the Night to SexyBack and Cry Me a River. And then ... 'N Sync surprised the crowd when they reunited on stage. It was only a brief interlude during JT's performance but it was awesome to see (L R) Lance Bass JC Chasez Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick making beautiful music together again. Drake performed Hold On We're Going Home and Started From the Bottom. Bruno Mars took to the VMAs stage in a leopard print button down and performed his new single Gorilla among laser beams and bursts of fire. After being introduced by NBA player Jason Collins and A$AP Rocky Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their gay marriage equality song Same Love with Mary Lambert. Kanye West performed a stirring rendition of Blood on the Leaves in silhouette against a backdrop of Steve McQueen's Lynching Tree. Lady Gaga returned to the VMAs stage for the first time in two years. She opened the show with her new single Applause featuring the singer's requisite multiple costume and hair changes staring with this conceptual get up ... and ending in a sea shell bra and flower festooned thong. Katy Perry was ready to rumble while playing her chart topping single Roar under the Brooklyn Bridge. The 20 year old pop star stepped out onto the stage a ball of energy wearing a fuzzy gray leotard as her hit single We Can't Stop played. An animated and uninhibited performer Cyrus' dance moves were a clear departure from her Hannah Montana days. (Meaning they involved a crotch grab or two.)

When she reached the end of her song the singer stripped down to a flesh toned latex bra and matching underwear and began to perform Blurred Lines alongside Robin Thicke.

With Cyrus acting as Thicke's back up singer and personal dancer featured guest stars 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar went largely unnoticed.

Miley better get a ... pregnancy test after all of that grinding joked comedian Kevin Hart during the show.

Those watching on Twitter weren't quite sure how to respond. By far the most common reaction as demonstrated by a photo of Will Smith's family seated in the VMAs audience was shock

Billboard's Editorial Director Bill Werde thinks Cyrus' show was right on target with the direction she's taking her brand she is after all no longer the teen Disney star she once was.
