Defensively the Irish were expected to be inexperienced but are even more so after finding out that 3 players on defense are being investigated for allegedly receiving help from others on homework and papers.
All three will be out of the lineup on Saturday as will one player on offense.
This means that Andrew Trumbetti could be the first Notre Dame true freshman to start an opening game of the season on the defensive line since 1998.
At least on offense under center the Irish will have a familiar face in Everett Golson. He regained his status as starting quarterback that he had lost after missing all of last season due to academic problems.
The dual threat Golson possesses due to his running ability as well as arm will make it difficult for many defenses that face the Irish this season.
Rice was the champion of Conference USA last season with a 10 4 record overall and 7 1 in conference play. The Owls lost in the Liberty Bowl 44 7 to Mississippi State.
Driphus Jackson will be the starting quarterback this season for Rice. He did not play much as a sophomore last season.
Rice has lost 21 straight games versus ranked opponents. Since 2005 Rice has allowed 54 points per game in 11 losses versus teams in the Top 25.
