Amanda Bynes arrested on suspicion of DUI dad unaware of her whereabouts

It seems Amanda Bynes may be struggling once again.

The actress who had a very public breakdown and has since been doing better with the help of her parents was arrested on Sunday after police determined she was driving under the influence authorities said.

Bynes' father told X17 that he learned of his daughter's arrest through the press and that he and his wife had not heard from Bynes outside of the occasional greeting since their conservatorship ended earlier this month.

Bynes 28 was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer after she stopped in the middle of an intersection in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles around 4 a.m. on Sunday. Police determined the former child star was under the influence of an unidentified drug after being evaluated at a nearby police station the CHP said in a statement.

TMZ reported that Bynes had taken Adderall before getting behind the wheel. According to the gossip site she was prescribed the drug by a doctor.

The release states that Bynes who has had a series of driving related arrests was cooperative but appeared disheveled when she was taken into custody.

Bynes was released hours later after posting $15 000 bail. A phone message left by The Associated Press for her criminal defense attorney Richard Hutton was not immediately returned.

The one time actress remains on probation for a 2012 case filed after she clipped a Los Angeles County sheriff's patrol car and was arrested for driving under the influence. Bynes pleaded no contest to alcohol related reckless driving in February.

In June a New York judge dismissed a criminal case filed after Bynes was accused of throwing a bong out of her 36th floor apartment. The case was dismissed after Bynes complied with orders to receive counseling and stay out of trouble.

Last year Bynes resolved a misdemeanor hit and run case in Los Angeles after entering a civil settlement with other drivers.

She received psychiatric treatment last year after authorities said she set a small fire in the driveway of a home in Thousand Oaks Calif. She later entered a rehab facility and was released after a lengthy stay. Her parents had been caring for her until their conservatorship ended and she has been spotted taking fashion design courses at the Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising in San Diego.

Once out of rehab Bynes deleted her controversial tweets from last year which included some vulgar messages she wrote about rapper Drake and nearly nude pictures.

In April 2013 the former actress revealed she had shaved her head but her recent photos show her sporting long blond locks once again.

Bynes first began acting in commercials at the age of 7 and was thrust into the limelight when she later became one of the stars of Nickelodeon s comedy show All That. She then starred in Nickelodeon s The Amanda Show from 1999 2002. Since then her acting career has waned and her last major role was in 2010 s Easy A which starred Emma Stone. Before that she appeared in films like What a Girl Wants and Hairspray.

She has publicly stated that she has retired from acting.

Olympian Michael Phelps Apologizes for DUI Arrest

Olympic champion Michael Phelps apologized Tuesday for his latest brush with the law saying he was deeply sorry to everyone I have let down with an arrest for DUI.

Police charged the 18 time gold medalist after officers said he was speeding and failed field sobriety tests when pulled over in his native Baltimore early Tuesday.

This is the second time Phelps has been arrested on drunken driving charges the first coming in 2004 after he competed at the Athens Olympics. He also was photographed using a marijuana pipe after the 2008 Beijing Games which resulted in a three month suspension from USA Swimming.

The 29 year old Phelps was charged with driving under the influence excessive speed and crossing double lane lines in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 in his native Baltimore according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility Phelps said in a statement. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.

He is the winningest athlete in Olympic history with twice as many gold medals as anyone else and has 22 medals overall.

After the London Olympics two years ago Phelps followed through on his long stated plan to retire. But he returned to competition in April signed a long term sponsorship deal with a new swimsuit company and has set his sights on competing at the 2016 Rio Games which would be his fifth Olympics.

A Maryland Transportation Authority police officer was using radar about 1 40 a.m. when Phelps' white 2014 Land Rover came through at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone the agency said in a statement.

The officer stopped Phelps just beyond the tunnel's toll plaza.

Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence the statement said. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests.

The statement said Phelps was cooperative throughout the process. Phelps was arrested and taken to a transportation authority station he was later released.

This is Phelps' second DUI charge in his home state. After the first in 2004 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland he received 18 months' probation and a $250 fine. He also was required to deliver a presentation on alcohol awareness to students at three high schools.

At the time Phelps told the judge in a packed courtroom I recognize the seriousness of this mistake. I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life.

In 2009 a British tabloid published a photo of Phelps using a marijuana pipe in South Carolina a few months earlier. A sheriff said there wasn't evidence to charge Phelps with a crime but he agreed to the suspension by USA Swimming. Sponsor Kellogg Co. dropped him almost immediately while Subway stayed with him.

In the wake of the photo's release Phelps said he used bad judgment and it's a mistake I won't make again.

The latest arrest tarnishes Phelps' comeback bid which produced promising results this past summer even though he wasn't nearly as dominating as he was at the height of his career. He won eight gold medals in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's iconic Olympic record.

A month ago Phelps won three golds and two silvers at his biggest meet of the year the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia.

For my first real big international meet back we accomplished everything we wanted to he said. We were able to find out some of the things I need to improve on over the next year and things I want to improve on.

With his performance Phelps qualified for the world championships in Russia next summer the biggest meet leading up to Rio.

I'm extremely pleased his coach Bob Bowman said after Pan Pacs. That looked like the real Michael there so that was very good.

Ebola Virus Diagnosed in U.S. Patient in Texas After Travel From Liberia CDC ...

A patient being treated at a Dallas hospital is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

The man whose identity was not released left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on September 20 said Dr. Thomas Frieden director of the CDC.

At that time the individual did not have symptoms. But four or five days later he began to exhibit them Frieden said. The individual was hospitalized and isolated Sunday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Citing privacy concerns health officials declined to release any details about how the patient contracted the virus what he was doing in Liberia or how he was being treated.

I can say he is ill. He is under intensive care Edward Goodman of the hospital told reporters.

The patient is believed to have had a handful of contacts with people after showing symptoms of the virus and before being hospitalized Frieden said. A CDC team is en route to Texas to investigate those contacts.

At the same time Frieden sought to play down the risk to public health. There currently are no other suspected cases of Ebola in Texas.

It s a severe disease which has a high case fatality rate even with the best of care but there are core tried and true public health interventions that stop it Frieden said.

The bottom line here is that I have no doubt that we will control this importation or this case of Ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country he said.

A number of other Americans have been diagnosed with the disease in West Africa and then brought to the United States for treatment.

The Ebola outbreak has been centered in the West African countries of Guinea Sierra Leone and Liberia though there have been concerns about international air travel and other factors including the fact the symptoms might not appear until two to 21 days after one is infected may contribute to its spread.

More than 3 000 people in West Africa have died after being infected with Ebola according to a World Health Organization report (PDF) from last week. The same report stated that there had been 6 553 cases of the virus overall though the number is suspected to be much higher given difficulties in tracking and reporting the disease.

According to the CDC Ebola causes viral hemorrhagic fever which can affect multiple organ systems in the body and is often accompanied by bleeding.

Early symptoms include sudden onset of fever weakness muscle pain headaches and a sore throat each of which can be easily mistaken early on for other ailments like malaria typhoid fever meningitis or even the plague.

CDC confirms first case of Ebola in US

June 20 2014 The Centers for Disease Control sign is seen at its main facility in Atlanta Georgia. (Reuters)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday that a patient being treated at a Dallas hospital has tested positive for Ebola the first case diagnosed in the United States.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas officials said in a statement Monday that an unnamed patient was being tested for Ebola and had been placed in strict isolation due to the patient's symptoms and recent travel history.

Presbyterian Hospital says it's taking measures to keep its doctors staff and patients safe.

CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said that the patient arrived in Texas from Liberia earlier this month and exhibited no symptoms. The patient sought care last Friday and has been hospitalized in isolation since the weekend. Frieden said that officials don't believe there is any risk to anyone who was on the flight at that time.

State health officials say no other cases are suspected in Texas.

The hospital had announced a day earlier that the patient's symptoms and recent travel indicated a case of Ebola the virus that has killed more than 3 000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region.

The CDC has said 12 other people in the U.S. have been tested for Ebola since July 27. Those tests came back negative.

Four American aid workers who have become infected while volunteering in West Africa have been treated in special isolation facilities in hospitals in Atlanta and Nebraska and a U.S. doctor exposed to the virus in Sierra Leone is under observation in a similar facility at the National Institutes of Health.

The U.S. has only four such isolation units but the CDC has insisted that any hospital can safely care for someone with Ebola.

According to the CDC Ebola symptoms can include fever muscle pain vomiting and bleeding and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the virus.

Jason McDonald spokesman for the CDC said health officials use two primary guidelines when deciding whether to test a person for the virus.

The first and foremost determinant is have they traveled to the region (of West Africa) he said. The second is whether there's been proximity to family friends or others who've been exposed he said.

U.S. health officials have been preparing since summer in case an individual traveler arrived here unknowingly infected telling hospitals what infection control steps to take to prevent the virus from spreading in health facilities. People boarding planes in the outbreak zone are checked for fever but symptoms can begin up to 21 days after exposure. Ebola isn't contagious until symptoms begin and it takes close contact with bodily fluids to spread.

Morgan Harringtons mom makes plea to Jesse Matthew Please tell where ...

CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. (AP) They both were walking alone separated from their friends late at night on or near the University of Virginia campus. One was found dead nearly five years ago. The other is still missing.

And now police believe they have found a link between the 2009 slaying of Morgan Harrington and the Sept. 13 disappearance of Hannah Graham Forensic evidence found in the arrest of a hospital worker and former taxi driver who fled the state when he learned police wanted to question him about the Graham case.

Jesse L. Matthew Jr. 32 was arrested on a beach near Galveston Texas last week and was brought back to Virginia to face a charge of abduction with intent to defile or sexually molest the 18 year old sophomore from northern Virginia. If convicted he could face up to life in prison. His bond hearing is set for Thursday.

Virginia State Police said Monday that Matthew's arrest provided a new forensic link for investigators to pursue in the Harrington investigation. In a written statement they called it a significant break but did not elaborate on the precise nature of the evidence and said they would make no further comment. Charlottesville police and Matthew's attorney James Camblos did not return messages.

Harrington's mother Gil Harrington issued an appeal to Matthew on Tuesday morning during an appearance on NBC's Today show.

I would like to appeal to him to please give the family information where Hannah is. We need to find Hannah she said.

She said police have not given her family any information that has not been publicly released.

Since their daughter was slain Dan Harrington said the couple has worked to prevent crimes against young women by promoting personal safety.

It is sad and we're sad that this has happened he said referring to Graham's disappearance.

He said Graham's case might help prevent future occurrences in Virginia.

The latest development may also help solve a 2005 sexual assault of a 26 year old woman in Fairfax City since the FBI previously said DNA from Harrington's attacker matched that of the person who committed the sexual assault. On Monday police spokeswoman Natalie Hinesley said that in order to maintain the integrity of their investigation they are not going to comment on whether the developments in the Graham and Harrington cases affect their case.

Leading up to Matthew's arrest police had searched his car and home and removed items including clothing they consider evidence. The items were sent to the state crime lab for testing but Charlottesville police have not divulged any results.

Harrington a 20 year old Virginia Tech student from Roanoke attended a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on the Charlottesville campus on Oct. 17 2009. She left during the concert and vanished. A farmer found her remains three months later in an Albemarle County hayfield which was among the places searched shortly after Graham disappeared police have said. At the time Matthew had a license to drive a taxi according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Graham disappeared after meeting friends for dinner and attending two off campus parties. She left the last one alone and was captured on video surveillance walking or running past a pub a service station and onto Charlottesville's Downtown Mall where police say witnesses reported seeing her with Matthew at a bar. Graham had sent friends several text messages including one saying she was lost.

Clint Van Zandt a former FBI profiler said he was struck by the similarities between the two disappearances. He said both women were separated from their friends in areas they apparently did not know well and perhaps were offered assistance by a predator.

Their looking for help was turned against them he said.

He also said he was not surprised by the new evidence.

Since this most recent victim disappeared I said time and again that if they could find out who was responsible there was a good chance the same person would be responsible for Morgan Harrington and a number of others he said.

He said he was not trying to indict the guy but added that police likely will investigate Matthew for other crimes against women including the 2005 sexual assault. At least two other women from the Charlottesville area are missing. Police previously said they had no reason to link those cases to Graham's disappearance.

Matthew was a defensive lineman on the Liberty University football team from 2000 to 2002. He was accused of raping a student on campus but the charge was dropped when the person declined to move forward with prosecution Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Doucette said Friday.

Matthew who was returned from Texas late Friday is being held without bond at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. He is scheduled to appear via a video link for a bond hearing in Charlottesville General District Court on Thursday.

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps arrested on DUI charge

(CNN) Legendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps the most decorated Olympian of all time was arrested early Tuesday in Maryland on a DUI charge according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Phelps known as the Baltimore Bullet and winner of 18 Olympic gold medals was arrested at about 1 40 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence excessive speed and crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I 95 in Baltimore the authority said in a statement. He was later released.

Phelps who returned to competitive swimming in April said on his official Twitter account that he understands the severity of his actions.

I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down Phelps 29 said in a series of three tweets.

USA Swimming issued a written statement Tuesday afternoon.

The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool the statement said.

A Maryland Transportation Authority police officer was operating a stationary radar on southbound I 395 leaving Baltimore when a white 2014 Land Rover passed traveling at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The officer followed the vehicle onto northbound I 95 through the tunnel and stopped the Land Rover just beyond the tunnel's toll plaza.

The 22 time Olympic medalist was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence the statement said.

Will Michael Phelps compete in 2016

He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests the statement added. Mr. Phelps was cooperative throughout the process.

Previous run ins with the law

Phelps rejects swimming comeback

It was not Phelps' first DUI case.

In 2004 he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence in Salisbury Maryland. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months probation. He also issued an apology after that incident.

In 2009 a photograph surfaced of Phelps allegedly smoking pot from a bong at a party.

I'll make a million mistakes in my life but as long as I never make the same mistake again then I've been able to learn and grow Phelps told CNN in 2012. He also said that the incident made him realize who his real friends were.

After the bong incident Phelps was suspended from competitive swimming for three months and one of his sponsors said it would not renew his contract

USA Swimming the nation's governing body for competitive swimming said it was withdrawing financial support for Phelps and barring him from competition during the period of his reprimand.

Kellogg Co. said it would not renew his advertising contract.

Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg company spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz said at the time.

At the time Phelps admitted regrettable behavior after a British newspaper published the photograph. The tabloid News of the World showed Phelps using the bong during what it said was a November party at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Back in the water

In April back in the pool for the first time since 2012 Phelps was close to his peerless best and raced to a second place finish in the 100 meter butterfly final in front of a sold out crowd at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Arizona.

Phelps retired after the 2012 Olympics and embarked on a year of travel and golfing with little mention of a return to swimming.

But he sparked speculation about a potential comeback by re entering the U.S. Anti Doping Agency's testing program last November which began a nine month wait required before a swimmer can again compete.

When the question of a return to Olympic action arose with a potential fifth games in Brazil in 2016 Phelps would only say he is taking one step at a time.

In August he won five medals at his first international meet the Pan Pacific Championships since the Olympics. Phelps won the 100 meter butterfly and was on Team USA's winning 800 meter and 400 meter medley relay teams. He took silver in the 200 individual medley and 400 meter freestyle relay. He was selected as the United States Olympic Committee's male athlete of the month.

A closer look at Windows 10

Microsoft officially unveiled Windows 10 this morning and the company is planning to distribute a Technical Preview of the new operating system tomorrow. At Microsoft's event today there were a number of machines running the Windows 10 Technical Preview and I got an opportunity to briefly explore the new OS. While Microsoft pushed hard with touch on Windows 8 Windows 10 is the complete opposite. If you mouse into the corners to find the tricky Charms Bar they no longer trigger and frustrate. Instead you're greeted with the familiar Windows desktop and Start Menu from the moment you use Windows 10. It's Windows 7 right now and very early in its development but it has some interesting improvements waiting inside.

The Start Menu returns to focus Windows on the desktop

The Start Menu is the most obvious addition. Just like in Windows 7 and other versions before it the Start Menu largely acts in the same way. Microsoft has done a u turn here but it's also considered the way it can modernize its Start Menu and it appears to have paid off. It's customizable enough that you can resize it pin traditional and modern apps or simply have it match the color of your desktop wallpaper. These hints of Windows 8 shine through directly in the Windows 10 Start Menu and although the overall interface feels like the Windows desktop the Start Menu feels truly new and yet familiar at the same time.

An OS X like Expose for Windows users

Another big new user interface feature is a new Task View button that sits on the taskbar. It looks fairly innocuous but when you trigger it you're thrown into a multitasking view that's very similar to Apple's OS X Expose feature. Multiple desktops are available from here and you can switch between them with ease to manage multiple apps across different workspaces. It's the feature Windows has always needed and Microsoft has borrowed elements from rival operating systems like OS X and Linux / Unix to really introduce this in Windows 10. But instead of making it identical to the competition Microsoft has added in its productivity focused snap views into Task View. You can snap apps in the same way you do in Windows 7 or Windows 8 and a new prompt will suggest apps that can be snapped alongside each other or windowed in complex ways. It appears to work well even if there's a slight learning curve you'll need to get over to make the most out of it. I did notice that if you have apps running in a separate desktop space then it can get confusing to bring them to a different active desktop space but this is an early build of Windows 10 and there's a long way to go until it's ready late next year.

Windows 10 screenshots Previous Next View full Gallery Previous Next

Hints show future UI changes are on the way

Elsewhere there are hints that Microsoft will revamp the user interface more. There's subtle drop shadows around apps and a new bar on the taskbar that indicates what apps are active. There's also new icons for File Explorer and Desktop but you can imagine that Microsoft will overhaul all of its icons to be more modern with Windows 10. Another big change is the ability to run universal modern apps in windows on the desktop. Microsoft demonstrated this originally at Build but using it in practice just feels totally natural as if it should have always been this way. You can snap these apps alongside each other and they also seem to resize fairly well to make them a lot more usable for mouse and keyboard users.

Windows 10 might be fairly basic right now but the signs are there that Microsoft understands its audience of Windows users. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore took the time to demonstrate a command prompt refresh that finally brings the ability to copy and paste directories with the keyboard. It's the most minor and geeky feature you'd ever expect in a Microsoft keynote but it demonstrates that the company appears to be serious about overhauling Windows fully with Windows 10. With regular updates planned over the coming months before release expect to see Windows 10 change in unexpected and welcomed ways. It might look like Windows 10 is just another Windows 7 but hopefully once the company is done tidying up the Windows desktop it will look and feel like a lot more.

GoPro Hero4 Black Shoots 4K Video at 30 fps

This fall s battle for action cam supremacy may have reached its peak with GoPro announcing not one but three new cameras including its new Flagship GoPro Hero4 Black. The Hero4 Black s most important feature is its ability to shoot 4k video at 30 frames per second This is a big step up from the old Hero3 which was able to shoot 4k video but at only 15 fps.

The Hero4 Black ($500) Hero4 Silver ($400) and new Hero ($130) cameras are targeted at professionals enthusiasts and entry level users respectively with the flagship Hero4 Black pushing the boundaries of action cam abilities.

MORE Best Waterproof and Rugged Cameras 2014

The Black has what GoPro is calling professional audio performance with a new mic that promises double the dynamic range and smoother more natural sounding audio. This flagship cam can also shoot 2.7k video at 50 fps as well as 1080p footage at 120 fps.

Both the Black and Silver Hero4 models can shoot stills at 12 MP at up to 30 fps and feature built in Wi Fi and Bluetooth for easy connection to the GoPro app via your smartphone or tablet. The Hero 4 Black and Silver cameras also have impressive waterproofing up to 131 feet

The cameras' Protunes feature provides manual controls for settings such as color ISO while balance sharpness and exposure. Protunes also includes additional modes for night lapse and night photos which allows for a wider variety of low light shots. Finally the HiLight Tag allows users to mark important moments making it easy to locate memorable clips even when shooting tons of footage.

The mid range Hero4 Silver caps out at 1080p 60 fps video but features a built in touch display not found on the pro grade Hero4 Black. Users will be able to review videos and photos compose a shot using live view and navigate menus with a quick tap or swipe.

The simply named Hero is GoPro s entry level replacement featuring 1080p 30 fps video 5 MP stills up to 5 fps and the same 131 foot waterproofing for $130. The Hero has a QuickCapture mode which provides easy one button solution for turning on your camera and beginning recording with a single press.

All three cameras will work with GoPro s extensive range of mounts and accessories a feature other recently announced action cams from Sony and Ricoh have a hard time matching. The Sony Action Cam Mini stacks up well against the Hero4 Silver costing $150 less while still being able to record 1080p 60 fps video with the main difference being the Mini s 16 feet of waterproofing versus 131 for the GoPro.

Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested for driving while under the influence early Tuesday morning according to police.

Phelps 29 also was charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I 95 in Baltimore the Maryland Transportation Authority Police said. Police say he was driving 84 mph in a 45 mph zone.

According to the police statement an officer spotted a 2014 white Land Rover speeding and followed it through the tunnel at about 1 40 a.m. The officer stopped the car just beyond the toll plaza identified Phelps as the driver by his license and noted that the 18 time gold medalist appeared to be under the influence.

He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests the police statement said.

Phelps was cooperative throughout the process police said. He was later released.

Earlier this morning I was arrested and charged with DUI excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines Phelps said in a statement. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.

Armour It's time for Michael Phelps to grow up

Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history with 22 medals from the 2004 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He retired after the London Games where he won four golds but began training last fall and officially returned to competition in April. One of the reasons he returned to swimming Phelps said this summer was because it gave him a structured schedule. He repeatedly said he was bored in retirement.

It's good to have some structure back in my life Phelps said in July. That's how I've always been. That's something I need. I was happy to get that year and a half where I did whatever I wanted went wherever I wanted. I got that out of the way and I'm happy to have this back.

Unlike 2008 and 2012 where he swam a full program he has concentrated on relays and shorter distance events in his comeback including his signature 100 meter butterfly. At last month's Pan Pacific Championships his first international meet since London he won three gold medals and two silvers.

Phelps doesn't have any more meets scheduled this year so it's unclear what if any discipline he might face.

The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious USA Swimming said in a statement. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool.

U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said in a statement that he was surprised by today's news and disappointed on a number of fronts but would defer to Phelps and USA Swimming before saying more.

A spokeswoman for Aqua Sphere which signed Phelps to a multiyear swimwear deal earlier this year did not return an email seeking comment. Nor did Under Armour another Phelps sponsor.

This is not Phelps' first brush with the law. In 2004 a 19 year old Phelps was arrested for drunken driving and was sentenced to 18 months probation. In 2009 a photo surfaced of Phelps with a marijuana pipe at a party. He was suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming.

Microsoft Skips Windows 9 to Emphasize Advances

The next version of Microsoft's flagship operating system will be called Windows 10 as the company skips version 9 to emphasize advances it is making toward a world centered on mobile devices and Internet services.

The current version Windows 8 has been widely derided for forcing radical behavioral changes. Microsoft is restoring some of the more traditional ways of doing things and promises that Windows 10 will be familiar for users regardless of which version of Windows they are now using.

For instance the start menu in Windows 10 will appear similar to what's found in Windows 7 but tiles opening to the side will resemble what's found in Windows 8.

Joe Belfiore a Microsoft executive who oversees Windows design and evolution said Windows 10 will offer the familiarity of Windows 7 with some of the benefits that exist in Windows 8 to help business users make the transition.

Microsoft offered a glimpse of its vision for Windows at a San Francisco event Tuesday aimed at business customers. Microsoft is making a technical preview version available to selected users starting Wednesday. It plans to unveil details about consumer features early next year with a formal release in mid 2015.

Analysts consider the success of the new Windows crucial for Microsoft and new CEO Satya Nadella who must show that Microsoft can embrace mobile devices without sacrificing the traditional computing experience.

The new software represents an attempt to step back from the radical redesign that alienated many PC users when Windows 8 was introduced two years ago. But it's not a complete retreat from Microsoft's goal of bridging the gap between PCs and mobile devices It still has touch screen functions and strives to create a familiar experience for Windows users who switch between desktop computers tablets and smartphones.

Microsoft executive Terry Myerson said Windows 10 will be a whole new generation and as expected will work across a variety of devices from phones to gaming consoles.

Microsoft currently has three main systems Windows 8 for traditional computers and tablets Windows Phone 8 for cellphones and Xbox for its gaming console. By unifying the underlying systems software developers will be able to create apps for the various devices more easily. Consumers will also be able to switch devices more easily and avoid having to buy the same apps multiple times.

That doesn't mean the apps will look the same on the various devices. Developers will still be able to adapt apps for the various screen sizes but won't have to start from the beginning for each version.

User interfaces on the various devices may also differ even as they share underlying technologies. For now Microsoft plans to keep the current Xbox interface on the game console.

The anger behind the Hong Kong uprising in one chart

The huge protests in Hong Kong are about a number of things but the most central is the question of whether or not Hong Kongers trust Beijing to stick to its promises to respect Hong Kong's autonomy and freedoms. According to a long running poll from the University of Hong Kong trust in Hong Kong's political arrangement with China has fallen to an all time low. That helps explain why these protests are erupting now and why they're so huge.

The poll asks Hong Kongers about their confidence in the One Country Two Systems policy which has granted Hong Kong its unusual autonomy and nominal democracy ever since it left British control for China in 1997. The more confident Hong Kongers are in this system the more faith they have in its ability to secure their rights. And today confidence in the system and in Beijing's adherence to it is plunging

(Joe Posner/Joss Fong)

Why is faith in Hong Kong's arrangement with China plummeting It's in large part because the Chinese government is demonstrating itself to be increasingly authoritarian both in Hong Kong and on the mainland.

The central government has been sending signals that it wants Hong Kong to look more like the mainland for a while. For instance in 2012 the Chinese central government attempted to impose so called patriotic curricula on Hong Kong schools. That meant Hong Kong students would be taught the same censored history of China as mainlanders. A wave of student proposals defeated the proposal laying some groundwork for today's protest movement.

This history of struggle came to a head in July of this year when the Chinese government issued a white paper essentially arguing that Hong Kong's civil liberties weren't inherent rights but privileges granted by the central government. The Communist Party made good on the implied threat to limit Hong Kong's freedoms in August when it announced that candidates for the 2017 election meant to be the first fully democratic election in Hong Kong's history would need to be approved by a pro Beijing committee. This violated Beijing's promise for those elections to be free and democratic infuriating Hong Kongers. This controversy was the immediate cause of the ongoing uprising.

But there are also problems on the mainland.

In the last couple of years there's been a very disturbing pattern in Beijing's approach to democracy and human rights on the mainland according to UC Irvine historian of China James Wasserstrom. Until five years ago Wasserstrom says it looked like China was heading in the direction of slightly more freedom of speech slightly more freedom for cutting edge journalism and space for moderate activists like human rights lawyers to operate.

But since then China has been cracking down even more than usual. This stiffening opposition to democratic reform on the mainland according to Wasserstrom has made Hong Kongers deeply skeptical of the Chinese government's intentions toward their own democracy.

If you cared already about maintaining the difference between your territory and the rest of China and the rest of China is undergoing a kind of political chill then protecting the difference becomes even more important to you Wasserstrom says.

MINNEAPOLIS Before their 41 28 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday the Minnesota Vikings received a motivational message from a familiar source Adrian Peterson.

The running back who is on the league's exempt/commissioner's permission list and away from the team while he fights child abuse charges in Texas sent a text message to coach Mike Zimmer before Sunday's game that Zimmer read to players.

The words that Adrian texted Coach Zimmer were very deep quarterback Teddy Bridgewater said. One thing I took away from that message was play each down like it's your last because you never know when it's going to be your last opportunity. I think the guys got that message pretty well.

The Vikings ran for 241 yards in the win over the Falcons with rookie running back Jerick McKinnon breaking off a 55 yard run that came almost seven years to the day after Peterson's 55 yard run against the Green Bay Packers matching it for the fourth longest by a rookie in team history.

McKinnon also became the first Vikings rookie to run for more than 100 yards since Peterson did it.

We felt Peterson in spirit running back Matt Asiata told 1500ESPN.com. He gave us a text a motivational speech in a text and we came out punching.

The Vikings' running game had struggled in Peterson's first two games away from the team with Asiata's 36 yards leading the team in a Week 3 loss to the Saints. A week later Asiata carried 20 times for 78 yards McKinnon finished the day with 135 yards on 18 carries Bridgewater added five carries for 27 yards and the Vikings easily surpassed Zimmer's goal of 130 yards rushing for the day.

Peterson just sent it to Coach Zimmer linebacker Gerald Hodges told 1500ESPN.com. Him and Coach were texting back and Peterson said he wanted to share some things. He just said he'd love to be out here would be dying to be out here with us. But everything's out of his control. He just said go out there and play your hearts out like it's your last time playing.

Cowboys only needed 10 men to stop Saints awful fake punt

The New Orleans Saints disastrous fake punt on Sunday Night Football was easily stopped by a Dallas Cowboys special teams playing with only 10 men. Amazingly that s only the third or fourth most ridiculous thing about Sean Payton s fateful decision that basically clinched the game for the hometown Cowboys.

When the Saints cut Dallas s 31 3 lead to 31 17 early in the fourth quarter there was a quick shift of momentum. The Cowboys offense suddenly looked mortal and the Saints offense had come alive. You could practically feel the Tony Romo pick six coming. New Orleans stopped Dallas on a three and out and had good field position to try and make it a one score game. But after three unsuccessful plays from their own 40 yard line the Saints faced a fourth and 9.

There seemed to be only two options Go for it (the preferable choice given the Saints porous defense) or punt and hope to force Tony Romo into another three and out. Neither were ideal scenarios but that s what happens when you re down 14 points with under eight minutes remaining.

What shouldn t have been an option was a fake punt. If you re going to go for it go for it. Put your 11 best men in the huddle and have them go get the yards. If you re going to punt set up for the punt that pins back Dallas the most. Don t do it halfway and try to fake. Anyway a fake only succeeds by surprise not when every person playing attending or watching the game is keeping an eye out for it.

(GIF via Bleacher Report)

The Saints of corse went for the fake anyway almost as if they were hoping that the idea was so stupid it just might work.

On NBC Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels were in disbelief. Instead of entrusting one of the top five quarterbacks in football to make the team s most important pass of the season Payton gave the honor to Thomas Morstead a punter who had never thrown a pass in his six year NFL career. He rolled out found no open receivers then tried to run the nine yards before he was quickly tackled. Pre snap movements hadn t helped. ( When they brought the gunner in motion I didn t really understand the call but it worked out in our favor Cowboys safety Barry Church said after the game.)

(USA TODAY Sports Images)

Hindsight s probably 20 20 Payton said after the game. It was on the hash mark that we wanted and they covered it pretty well.

Hash marks are more important than Drew Brees

And then there was the missing player. For the second straight week an NFC squad made a crucial special teams with an undermanned unit. Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas said the Cowboys mix up was due to the team s initial uncertainty about whether to play regular punt coverage or to play for the fake. When returner Dwayne Harris ran off the sideline to return the punt two Cowboys came off the field instead of one.

Frankly five Cowboys could have left the field and it still probably would have been enough to stop the lamest fake special teams play this side of Jim Zorn.

Dennis Allen was fired on the phone which is pretty good for a Raiders coach

(USA TODAY Sports)

The Oakland Raiders have a proud and noble history of mishandling the firing of their head coaches. On Monday night the team continued that tradition by parting ways with coach Dennis Allen over the phone.

The Raiders fired Dennis Allen tonight over the phone. Really.

Ian Rapoport ( RapSheet) September 30 2014

Yes the Raiders informed Dennis Allen he is fired over the phone rather than talk to him on an 11 hour flight home from London.

Jay Glazer ( JayGlazer) September 30 2014

Allen also joins an esteemed list of coaches who were canned in Oakland after four games into the season. Mike Shanahan got the boot after four games in 1989 and Lane Kiffin was shown the door after the same time in 2008.

Getting fired over the phone is not a good way to be let go. As an employee you hope to be able to look your boss in the eye before getting the boot and perhaps even answer for your actions. However Allen shouldn t feel too bad. He was working for the Raiders after all. Compared to head coaches of yesteryear Allen s dismissal was downright classy.

(AP)

Late Raiders owner Al Davis held a press conference after firing Kiffin in 08 during which the owner described the process in which he fired his coach in explicit painstaking detail. At one point Davis read a letter he sent Kiffin explaining the mistakes the coach had been making on the field called the coach a flat out liar a professional liar and claimed he conned me like he conned all you people.

If the final scene of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was reshot with a 79 year old NFL owner with an affinity for silver and black wind suits and a penchant for calling Marcus Allen a cancer it probably would have looked like this.

In 89 Shanahan and Davis put on one of the most incredible soap operas in NFL history. The details of Shanahan s tenure with Raiders are long and sordid. Assistant coaches hired by Shanahan were fired by Davis. Assistant coaches hired by Davis and fired by Shanahan were rehired by Davis into different jobs. After starting the 89 season 1 3 Shanahan was shown the door. Five years later Shanahan attempted to even the score using quarterback Elvis Grbac while serving as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator.

From a 1998 article in The New York Times

Shanahan pulled Grbac aside Grbac recalled and gave an unusual order See Al Davis over there I want you to throw the ball right at him.

A shocked Grbac replied I can t do that. If I hit him do you know what he could do to me

Shanahan looked at Grbac with his intense glare and said Throw the ball.

You see getting fired by the Raiders over the phone isn t so bad after all.

Arron Lewis Suspect in Killing of Beverly Carter Names Accomplice

The man who authorities say has admitted kidnapping Beverly Carter an Arkansas real estate agent whose body was later discovered in a shallow grave said Tuesday that she was targeted because she was a rich broker but he said he did not kill her.

In comments to reporters after he was questioned by sheriff s investigators the suspect Arron Lewis implicated a second man named Trevor whom he described as a co defendant and said that they had exchanged text messages. He did not give a last name. But the Pulaski County Sheriff' s Office said Lewis is the sole suspect in the case. As far as we re concerned we re not looking for anyone else Lt. Carl Manden confirmed to NBC News.

In footage captured by NBC affiliate KARK Lewis said that he had not killed Carter. Asked whether he had anything to say to Carter s family he said I m sorry. Lewis was also asked why Carter was targeted and he said She was just a woman that worked alone a rich broker.

Hong Kong protesters willing to pay economic price

As demonstrations continue to disrupt normal operations in Hong Kong both experts and residents are considering the long term impact that pro democracy protest will have on the international finance hub.

Police have used pepper spray and tear gas in an effort to oust protesters from their camps near Hong Kong's main business district but the activists remain in place and have even occupied main roadways in other neighborhoods.

The protesters want free and open elections in the Chinese territory while Beijing has proposed a process that would essentially allow it to screen candidates for the city's top office.

The protests have closed some schools and office buildings and 21 banks have closed branches or ATMs. The benchmark Hang Seng has shed nearly 6% over the past five trading days. On Monday the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said it was standing by to provide additional liquidity if required.

Critics worry that the protests threaten Hong Kong's status as a global business hub and a beacon of stability in Asia. Should the protests continue some experts warn that retail sales will suffer the housing market could take a hit and Hong Kong's economy could slide into a recession.

There is also a risk that Hong Kong's economy could suffer more lasting damage especially if the authorities decide to crack down on the demonstrators analysts at Capital Economics wrote in a research note.

A man walks to work on an empty street in Hong Kong cleared as pro democracy protests continue to expand in the city.

A British colony until 1997 Hong Kong rose to prominence as a center for regional commerce that acted as China's gateway to the world. That reputation stuck even after Hong Kong was returned to China becoming a special administrative region.

Businesses here face fewer restrictions than they would on the mainland making it an attractive place to set up shop. Many large multinational companies even make Hong Kong their regional headquarters.

Chinese firms have also looked to Hong Kong as a way to expand their reach abroad. Hong Kong is the single largest source of foreign capital for Chinese enterprises and mainland firms represent about 56% of the total market cap of companies traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

But Hong Kong's status and reputation is not guaranteed and some residents fear the territory's advantages are slipping away especially as mainland Chinese cities rise in stature and some international firms choose Singapore as their headquarters.

Some protesters say they see lasting damage to Hong Kong but only if the government doesn't begin to make amends.

I don't think businesses will be threatened ... if the government can address our problems correctly and Hong Kong can become more democratic said Denise Li 19. If not international businesses may start to think that Hong Kong is not a very open city and the government will protect Chinese companies only.

Others fear that foreign investment will dry up.

I think foreign investors may be afraid of the future in Hong Kong said Sammi Mak 18 a business student at a local university. Hong Kong is known for freedom the inflow of information and now China is taking over everything and Hong Kong may lose this advantage compared to other cities.

Benny a 21 year old who declined to give his last name said the protests are not yet a big problem for the business community.

I don't think business is harmed within Hong Kong he said. Right now everyone is going to work everyone is doing their normal job.

Fitch Ratings said it doesn't expect the protests to last long enough to have much of an effect on the city.

But Fitch sees problems ahead if the government no longer commands popular consent or the protests do significant damage to the perception that Hong Kong is a stable and attractive investment destination.

But those questions will likely be answered over months or years rather than days the ratings agency said.

Arkansas Real Estate Agent Beverly Carter Targeted Because She Was Woman ...

The man accused of kidnapping and killing Arkansas real estate agent Beverly Carter said today she was targeted because she was a woman that worked alone.

Aaron Lewis an ex con pleaded not guilty today charges of capital murder robbery and kidnapping in connection with Carter's death. He is being held on $1 million bail.

Lewis 33 admitted during police questioning to kidnapping Carter 50 Pulaski County Sheriff's Lt. Carl Minden told ABC News. Lewis did not admit to the slaying and did not provide any details about Carter's whereabouts Minden said.

Real Estate Agents Fear for Safety After Colleague 'Abducted'

The suspect spoke briefly to reporters this morning as he was taken from the jail to the sheriff's office where he was to be interviewed again after spending more than 12 hours with investigators Monday.

When asked by reporters why Carter was targeted Lewis responded Because she was just a woman that worked alone a rich broker The Associated Press reported. He denied killing her.

Carter's body was found in a shallow grave at the Argos Concrete Co. about 20 miles from the town of Scott Arkansas where Carter had an appointment to show a house for sale. The Associated Press reported that Lewis once worked at the concrete company.

Carter's family issued a statement today saying We are devastated at the loss of our precious Beverly. There is now a hole in our hearts that will never be filled. Mr. Lewis robbed us of an amazing wife loving mother and grandmother. Her grandkids will never get to the know the magnitude of her greatness.

The real estate agent's disappearance had rattled her colleagues most of them women who routinely agree to meet strangers at empty homes that are for sale.

They're scared and I need someone to give them some reassurance said Brenda Rhoads the principal broker at the real estate company where Carter worked.

Rhoads who was good friends with Carter and worked with her for nine years told ABC News that she arranged for a police detective to come and speak to her colleagues at Crye Leike Real Estate Services Monday to try and calm their fears.

Some have said that Carter a 50 year old grandmother should not have met the prospective buyer alone but Rhoads dismissed those critiques saying That's our job.

I would say that 80 percent of my agents are women but the men they are devastated too she said.

GoPro is gearing up to share more of its users videos

For years thrill seekers have worn GoPro video cameras to capture hair raising skydiving motorcycle racing and snowboarding footage from a first person point of view. They've documented up close and personal encounters with wildlife even mounting the cameras on the back of a surfing pig and on the beak of a pelican learning to fly.

But much of that cool video footage has remained on customers' cameras or has been uploaded to a personal YouTube account and viewed by only a few friends and family. GoPro wants those videos to be shared with the world and in the process it hopes to become known as more than just a hardware maker.

After a decade in the camera business GoPro is evolving into a media brand that harnesses the best of its user generated material and makes it available for the public to watch free.

The spectacular popularity of GoPro videos on YouTube and elsewhere has made clear to GoPro executives the potential to expand far beyond rugged extreme action hardware. We realized our users were really creating magic said Adam Dornbusch GoPro's head of programming. Through our channels we're able to share it.

Sharing it is just the beginning. GoPro envisions a vast always on marketing campaign that takes content created by customers distributes it and uses it to attract new buyers who in turn share their own videos in what the company calls a revenue raising virtuous cycle.

GoPro also wants to keep Wall Street happy. Since its June IPO GoPro's stock has surged 279% but many analysts think the company needs more than just cameras to justify its massive $3 billion IPO market valuation.

Creating a media empire if it ever becomes that will take time. Revenue from GoPro's media side now is tiny although the company says it is monetizing its content through advertising and licensing. Hardware including the company's newest camera series the Hero4 launched Monday will drive revenue and profit for years to come.

GoPro sold more than 3.8 million cameras last year up from 2.3 million in 2012. Although its hardware success flies in the face of a downward trend for standalone camera sales analysts wonder how long the company can keep the pace going and say at some point the camera market will become saturated.

GoPro is moving fast to put the pieces into place. A year ago the company created a team to look for user generated GoPro content to channel onto its own networks the team now numbers 30 people. It has hired media hotshots Dornbusch who joined GoPro last year is a longtime media executive and former business development head at Current TV in June GoPro hired former Skype CEO and top Microsoft executive Tony Bates as president.

Media deals have been struck with two major partners Microsoft's Xbox and Virgin America and GoPro is pursuing distribution contracts with major consumer brands television networks Hollywood studios video on demand platforms and smart TV manufacturers.

On Virgin America flights passengers can watch videos on a GoPro channel. The Microsoft deal is more comprehensive A GoPro app which launched on Xbox 360 in April and Xbox One in July streams on demand GoPro video content to Xbox users worldwide users can buy GoPro cameras and accessories through the app fulfilled by the Microsoft online store.

The GoPro channel has become popular on Xbox 360 and Xbox One because of its real life unscripted moments which appeal to a wide swath of viewers Xbox spokeswoman Lisa Gurry said. Xbox 360 users in the U.S. spend an average of almost 30 minutes watching content per GoPro session and sports stunts in particular do well among Xbox's gaming centric viewers.

GoPro is uploading more often to its main YouTube channel now with more than 2.2 million subscribers.

A year ago nearly all of the short form videos seen across GoPro's media offerings were produced by its in house GoPro Original Productions. Now half of its videos are user generated and executives expect that proportion to grow.

Choosing which videos will appear on GoPro's channels is handled by its team of creative editors who scour the Web for compelling GoPro users and content.

Many people label their videos as GoPro in their online descriptions to denote action or unusual footage and have generated a trove of content for GoPro to choose from. In 2013 GoPro users uploaded to YouTube 2.8 years worth of video featuring GoPro in the title. In the first quarter of 2014 an average of 6 000 daily YouTube uploads and more than 1 billion views represented more than 50 million watched hours of videos with GoPro in the title file name tags or description the company said.

Other times GoPro users contact the company to say they captured great material and offer to send it in. (GoPro is working on a system to make it easier for the public to submit GoPro videos for consideration.)

Once a connection with a creator has been made a GoPro creative team rep works with him or her to flesh out a concept. If footage is already shot GoPro might ask the user to film additional scenes or voiceovers for context.

Users are gifted with the latest GoPro cameras which retail for $129 to $499 and accessories they can use to shoot their videos. The actual filming is left to the user. GoPro makes final edits including color correction and adding music before distributing the video through its channels.

The videos vary widely in subject a surfer's view of a seemingly never ending barrel a fireman rescuing an unconscious kitten from a burning home dancers waltzing vertically on the outer wall of Oakland's city hall.

There's no real ceiling on this because it's about the human experience GoPro creative director Brad Schmidt said. Unless humans get boring and what we do gets boring these videos won't be boring.

This year GoPro reached out to Ethan Swanson an actuary by day who does extreme stunts on the side and puts them on his own YouTube channel. Swanson 24 told GoPro he planned to film himself leaping without any ropes or safety nets from atop a Chicago apartment building onto the slanted roof of a much shorter house before sliding down the roof and winding up on the spiral staircase of a building nearby.

GoPro shipped him a few cameras gave him some ideas on where to place them around the scene and guided him through the creative process.

After the stunt which he executed flawlessly save for a huge rip down his pants leg he sent the footage to GoPro for editing. The final polished product Epic Roof Jump quickly went viral and has been viewed 5.3 million times on GoPro's YouTube channel.

The Patriots Loss Was Terrible (But It Actually Could Have Been Worse)

Stock Up

Umm...well...this will be quick.

Matthew Slater A pair of nice special teams tackles in punt coverage helped keep this game from being even worse than it was if you can imagine such a thing.

Brandon LaFell The Patriots' big offensive free agent acquisition on the board with six receptions for 119 yards and a third quarter touchdown catch and run of 43 yards. LaFell has been waiting awhile for his time in the spotlight and he finally got it as the Patriots' leading receiver. Too bad for him it couldn't have come at a worse time.

Stock Down

Where to begin

Nate Solder It's been an awful season for Nate Solder so far and things didn't get much better on Monday night. Chiefs outside linebacker Tamba Hali logged a third quarter sack fumble on Tom Brady giving the Chiefs the ball inside the 10 yard line. The Patriots' starting left tackle was benched on the next drive in favor of Marcus Cannon but later came back onto the field.

Dont'a Hightower It's been a great season for Dont'a Hightower so far but the Patriots' outside linebacker was pushed off the edge with regularity as the Chiefs ran directly at him. Hightower was also targeted on several catches by Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce hearkening back to a 2013 campaign which saw him take quite a few lumps in that role.

Chandler Jones See Dont'a Hightower's blurb minus the parts about coverage.

Shane Vereen Maybe Shane Vereen was just trying to make a big play to help his team but the Patriots' third down back left a lot of yards on the field by continually trying to juke defenders in front of him stutter stepping and slowing his forward momentum.

Darrelle Revis For a second straight week the Patriots' prized free agent signing was victimized in coverage. Film review may reveal something else but Revis gave up no less than three receptions into his coverage in the first half alone for gains of eight 13 and 15 yards.

Tom Brady Tom Brady is not infallible. The Patriots quarterback made terrible decisions and costly mistakes on multiple occasions. He had a chance to scramble for a first down on 3rd and 3 in the second quarter but chose to throw to Julian Edelman on a pass that fell incomplete. He then proceeded to throw quite possibly the stupidest interception of his career straight to Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith who returned it inside the red zone. A pick six came later with Brady forcing a pass over the middle that was picked off by safety Husain Abdullah. That was the end of Brady's night and he was benched for rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

He always looks skinny to me Trestman smiled.

Body of murdered real estate agent Beverly Carter found in a shallow grave

It was late in the evening on Thursday just before Arkansas real estate agent Beverly Carter 49 planned to show a home to a potential new client. She did exactly what she was supposed to do and called her husband to tell him where she would be.

Carl Carter didn t think much of it but then hours passed and he hadn t heard from his wife.

By 8 o clock I knew something was wrong but I gave it until 8 30 Carl Carter said according to KARK4 News in Little Rock.

At around 9 p.m. Carl Carter pulled into the driveway of the Scott Ark. home that Beverly Carter was supposed to be showing to find his wife s brown Cadillac parked in the driveway with her purse inside. The door to the home was wide open and Beverly Carter was nowhere to be found.

I would just like to have my wife back Carter told reporters as family friends and law enforcement launched a massive search for his wife. On Facebook friends and relatives prayed for Beverly Carter s return.

On Tuesday nearly five days later police found Beverly Carter s body buried in a shallow grave on a property outside of Little Rock. Aaron Lewis 33 has been charged with capital murder in Carter s death police said.

We are devastated at the loss of our precious Beverly her family said in a statement according to KARK. There is now a hole in our hearts that will never be filled. Mr. Lewis robbed us of an amazing wife loving mother and grandmother. Her grandkids will never get to the know the magnitude of her greatness.

Authorities say Aaron Michael Lewis admitted to kidnapping Beverly Carter. (Reuters/Pulaski County Sheriff s Office/Handout )

It is a case that has been like a tragic cat and mouse game from the beginning.

On Sunday police acknowledged that their person of interest in the case Lewis a parolee had been involved in a suspicious car accident but wasn t arrested.

Witnesses said he was driving so fast on Sunday evening that his car fishtailed and hit a slab of concrete on the side of the road according to CNN. When police deputies arrived they said Lewis s face was bloodied and bruised from hitting the windshield of his car.

Lewis said that another driver had driven him off the road but he couldn t describe the vehicle authorities said. When he was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock for his injuries a deputy followed behind the ambulance to issue a citation for reckless driving. Lewis went to get a CT scan and disappeared authorities said.

Another 24 hours passed until Lewis showed up at a shopping center near Little Rock looking nervous and suspicious a witness told 911 dispatchers. Minutes passed and bystanders began taking notice. Lewis took off.

The guy ran off and we just took off after him one witness told KARK in an interview. My buddy followed him around one way and I went the other way to make sure he couldn t double back.

We all got him cornered in the office building and the police showed up he added.

But any hope that Lewis s capture might have brought to Carter s family was short lived. Hours later Lewis admitted to kidnapping Carter authorities said and her body was found in the shallow grave. Police have not said what contact Lewis might have had with Carter before her disappearance.

By its very nature it can be a solitary and vulnerable occupation. Agents often travel to show unfamiliar homes sometimes with new clients a decision that has sometimes been fatal.

Carter did at least one thing agents are encouraged to do for their safety keeping loved ones updated on their location. They are also urged agents to use a buddy system to show homes something that isn t always possible.

This latest case has sent a collective shiver down the spines of real estate professionals nationwide.

I have been a realtor for 36 years and it gets more dangerous all the time wrote Patricia Schmitz Manos according to CNN.

Bynes 28 was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer after she stopped in the middle of an intersection in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles around 4 a.m. on Sunday. The former child star was determined to be under the influence of an unidentified drug after being evaluated at a nearby police station the CHP said in a statement.

She received psychiatric treatment last year after authorities said she set a small fire in the driveway of a home in Thousand Oaks California. She later entered a rehab facility and was released after a lengthy stay. Her parents have since been caring for her and she has been spotted taking fashion design courses at the Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising.

Once out of rehab Bynes deleted her controversial tweets from last year which included some vulgar messages she wrote about rapper Drake and nearly nude pictures.

In April 2013 the former actress revealed she had shaved her head but her recent photos show her blonde locks looking long once again.

Bynes first began acting in commercials at the age of 7 and was thrust into the limelight when she later became one of the stars of Nickelodeon s comedy show All That. She then starred in Nickelodeon s The Amanda Show from 1999 2002. Since then her acting career has waned and her last major role was in 2010 s Easy A. Before that she appeared in films like What a Girl Wants and Hairspray.

She has publicly stated that she has retired from acting. Her last film credit was 2010's Easy A which starred Emma Stone.

The Patriots have suddenly lost their Way

KANSAS CITY Mo. Forget being all in this season. The Patriots right now are all out all out of answers for a leaky offensive line all out of excuses for suiting up Danny Amendola and all out of In Belichick We Trust platitudes to explain gaping roster holes.

The team that s not all in couldn t get out of Arrowhead Stadium fast enough after getting its doors blown off in a game they were never in.

The Patriots were trampled and humiliated 41 14 by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night dropping to an unimpressive 2 2 on the season. The Belichick FC s two victories are over the Minnesota Vikings who were shellshocked in the wake of Adrian Peterson s child abuse imbroglio and the Oakland Raiders the NFL s perpetual black hole not exactly the iron of the NFL.

This was a System failure. The Patriots and their first family the Krafts wave their finger and utter tsk tsk at the notion of loading up to make a Super Bowl run a la the Denver Broncos. It s not prudent. Wouldn t you just rather win 12 games in the path of least resistance AFC East They believe The System will prevail.

News flash to the lords of Fort Foxborough Talented players win football games not systems or value charts. If you don t have enough of them or don t use them correctly what you have is hubris and a helping of humble pie served up in cherry red on national television.

Tom Brady talked about the Patriots struggles after Monday night s loss at Kansas City.

More coverage Photos Patriots routed

This was the second largest margin of defeat for the Patriots during the Bill Belichick era topped only by the infamous Lawyer Milloy Game a season opening 31 0 loss to the Buffalo Bills in 2003.

They all count the same in the standings. There is no way you feel good after a game like that whenever it is said Belichick of the primetime pummeling his team endured.

The Patriots trailed 17 0 at the half 24 0 after Tom Brady was strip sacked in the third quarter by Tamba Hali to set up Jamaal Charles s third touchdown of the game and 27 0 after Brady was intercepted by Sean Smith on the ensuing possession.

It was 41 7 after Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah returned a Brady interception 39 yards for a touchdown with 10 34 left. That was the last pass TB12 (14 of 23 for 159 yards with one touchdown two interceptions and two fumbles) threw. He was pulled for Jimmy Garoppolo.

When you lose the way we lost there is not a lot be gained other than the feeling that we have now and that we don t want this feeling again said Brady. We ve had it before. It s motivated us . . . This is a tough one.

The only way the Patriots could have salvaged this evening would have been if they kidnapped Kansas City Royals ace James Shields and brought him back to Boston for the Red Sox.

This was supposed to be a game for the Patriots to break out of their offensive funk and prove that rumors of the unit s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Instead they were validated.

The Patriots went with a reconfigured offensive line inserting rookies Bryan Stork at center and Cameron Fleming at right guard. Center Dan Connolly slid over to the Logan Mankins crater otherwise known as left guard.

It was rearranging the furniture in a room with holes in the floorboards.

The Patriots were still inept. They had just 96 yards of total offense in the first half and against a Kansas City club that was allowing 5.1 yards per rush ran seven times for 24 yards. They finished with 75 yards on 16 carries.

The Patriots defense which had been the pillar of the team allowed 131 yards rushing on 17 carries to KC in the first half and 207 overall on 38 rushes. New England had surrendered 121 rushing yards combined to their two previous opponents. Kansas City racked up 303 yards of offense in the first half and 443 for the game.

On back to back plays the Patriots gave up Kansas City s longest rush and longest pass of the season.

Knile Davis knifed through the New England defense for a 48 yard rush. On the next play Alex Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce for a 33 yard gain.

Smith then hit Charles who was lined up as a wide receiver with a screen pass for a 5 yard touchdown to put KC up 14 0 with 10 58 left in the first half.

The Chiefs romp continued a Kansas City Boston themed sports milieu in KC.

The Royals made the playoffs for the first time since 1985 and will host the American League wild card game on Tuesday against the Oakland A s.

The A s are sending erstwhile Red Sox ace and contract combatant Jon Lester to the mound at Kauffman Stadium.

On Sunday the University of Kansas less than an hour drive from Arrowhead fired former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis as its head football coach. Weis won three Super Bowls calling plays for Brady. He has lost two college head coaching jobs since.

Chiefs fans started a Let s go Royals chant at Arrowhead with 12 08 left in the game as officials reviewed whether a Charles fumble recovered in the end zone by Kansas City would stand as touchdown.

It was overturned so Smith (20 of 26 248 yards) threw his third touchdown pass of the game.

In one of the league s loudest venues the Patriots went quietly into the night.

Arrowhead was full of sound and fury signifying the Patriots futility.

I think the biggest thing we re going to take away from this game is we ve got to play a lot better if we re going to be a good team and win games said Patriots safety Devin McCourty. I m disappointed as this is the most embarrassing game I ve ever been a part of. We lost in every aspect.

They lost the Patriot Way.
