Apple Cup 2014 UW dominates WSU 31 13

In what was one of the more disappointing seasons in recent WSU football history the Cougars suffered one final indignity when they were whipped on their home field by their rivals as Washington won the 2014 Apple Cup 31 13.

WSU finishes the season 3 9 2 6 in the Pac 12.

Very little in the game went right for WSU which didn't get its first points until the game until five minutes into the fourth quarter when the Cougs were trailing by 31 points. UW had success with something very few teams have been able to pull off Dropping seven and eight into coverage on nearly every play. Quarterback Luke Falk rarely was able to throw to his first read and when did find open receivers they were plaugued by a plethora of drops.

The game was close for a half. While WSU sputtered on offense UW had a difficult time moving the ball with consistency early in the game. Dwayne Washington ran in a 51 yard touchdown on the Huskies' second offensive play but it took a late turnover on a Vince Mayle fumble deep in WSU territory for the Huskies to get a second score.

Despite trailing 14 0 WSU had outgained UW at the break.

That didn't continue in the second half. UW scored on the second play of the second half on another long Washington run (60 yards this time) and when WSU went for minus 10 yards on the next drive it was clear there would be no Cougar comeback in this one.

Washington used its strong second half to outgain WSU 437 376.

Falk finished 27 of 49 for 355 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions while Cyler Miles finished 25 of 39 for 249 yards two touchdowns and one interception.

Vince Mayle hauled in five catches for 79 yards which will leave him short of the 1 500 yard milestone.

The season is over for WSU which now will be left to wonder what went wrong. Could coaching changes also be on the horizon There's probably very little that's not on the table after this debacle of a season.

No turning back for Browns Johnny Manziel time has arrived

Johnny Manziel right celebrates a touchdown after coming on in relief of struggling starter Brian Hoyer Sunday against the Bills. (Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images)

It was Johnny Manziel time on Sunday for the Cleveland Browns.

It should remain Johnny Manziel time moving forward. There s no turning back now for better or for worse.

The only surprising thing is that it took this long. Coach Mike Pettine finally made the much anticipated move Sunday sitting down suddenly struggling starting quarterback Brian Hoyer in favor of Manziel the highly celebrated and closely scrutinized rookie chosen in the opening round of the NFL draft in May.

Pettine was non committal following the Browns 26 10 defeat at Buffalo saying he and his assistant coaches will review the game before deciding whether Manziel or Hoyer will be the starter for the Browns game next weekend at home against the Indianapolis Colts. Pettine said the Browns won t overreact and won t place all the blame on Hoyer.

But the Browns invested plenty of hope in Manziel when they drafted him and now it should be time to find out whether he can deliver. It s the way of the NFL. Once a team turns to its young would be franchise quarterback it generally stays with him until he demonstrates whether or not he can play. It would be extremely difficult to go back to Hoyer now.

That s not saying it s not possible that the Browns will stick with Hoyer as the starter. Pettine gave the job to Hoyer entering the season even though Hoyer had not played particularly well during the preseason. Pettine clearly has a degree of faith in Hoyer and Hoyer rewarded that trust for much of the season by playing well and keeping the Browns in playoff contention.

But those playoff hopes are dissipating now with the Browns record at 7 5 and the AFC wild card race so crowded and Hoyer has had a string of shaky outings. He completed 40 percent of his passes in a Nov. 16 loss to the Houston Texans. He threw three interceptions in a Nov. 23 victory at Atlanta. He threw two more interceptions Sunday against the Bills.

Manziel came in and gave the Cleveland offense a lift with a 10 yard touchdown run. He completed five of eight passes for 63 yards.

The starting job might have been Manziel s entering the season if he d played better during the preseason. Pettine went with Hoyer following a dreadful outing by Manziel at FedEx Field in which he played poorly and directed an obscene gesture at the Washington Redskins sideline. Manziel has attracted attention for so many of the wrong reasons whether deserved or not most recently with an incident with a fan in the lobby of the building in which Manziel lives.

Now it s time to find out if Manziel can remain in the NFL spotlight for the right reasons.

Or at least it should be.

Aaron Rodgers Takes Another Big Stride into Realm of NFL Quarterback Legends

The legend in the making got his hand stepped on. It looked to be a bloody mess. But a bleeding limb can't stop Aaron Rodgers. A truck might not. Maybe not even a nuke.

The throws the legend in the making made despite a hurt hand were uncanny. So was the movement of his feet. It is not an exaggeration to say the way Rodgers is playing the position is the best we've ever seen. Better than Montana. Better than Marino. Better than Tom Brady the man he was playing Sunday at Lambeau Field. Rodgers' offense generated 347 total yards in the first half alone.

The current legend did not get his hand stepped on. But if there is one thing Brady can still do and has always done it is step on the gas pedal. He tried to match Rodgers and came close but what we are learning from watching Rodgers is that not many sometimes not even the greats not even the best can play on his level.

This was a masterclass in quarterbacking. The only thing missing was a blackboard Johnny Unitas a film projector and Bill Walsh barking out play concepts from the back of the room. On a cold day in Green Bay we saw in some ways Rodgers take control of the projector from Walsh and teach the position himself as he and the Packers beat the New England Patriots 26 21.

It turns out the only thing that can stop Aaron Rodgers is Brett Favre's shadow. When that disappeared the blossoming happened at warp speed to where Rodgers has surpassed the man whose play kept him on the bench during his first three years in Green Bay.

Morry Gash/Associated Press

NFL coaches and players despise when the media make a game about the two quarterbacks and of course they are correct to feel that way. Except in this case. No this game wasn't flawless as Brady and Rodgers' hot starts cooled slightly in the second half but it was still a clinic. Especially by Rodgers.

This wasn't an official passing of the mantle. Not yet. Because we could easily see these two teams in the Super Bowl. But it was for the moment a sort of symbolic torch passing from the Brady Peyton Manning era to this one where Rodgers rules as the Lord of the Flings.

Rodgers went against Bill Belichick the best defensive mind the NFL has ever seen and prospered. Sure Belichick slowed Rodgers so the quarterback couldn't drop a 50 burger as he did against the Bears and Eagles or even 40 plus as he did against the Vikings.

Then Brady was Brady. Early in the fourth quarter with Green Bay leading 23 14 Brady threw a remarkable touch pass to a back shoulder spot where only Brandon LaFell could catch it. That made it 23 21.

After the score Brady went facemask to facemask with LaFell screaming in his face in celebration. Rodgers may be king but Brady isn't done just yet.

Then on the next series you saw why Rodgers is the 21st century Brady. On one play with the pocket crumbling he sidestepped two Patriots linemen and threw a dart downfield. On the next play he threw another incredibly accurate pass to Davante Adams. The next play another rocket on target.

By my count Rodgers had two inaccurate throws (not incompletions inaccurate throws) against a Belichick defense. That's pretty damn incredible.

The sure touchdown pass to Adams with approximately eight minutes remaining hit Adams right in the hands. He dropped it.

Brady trailing 26 21 came close to making Rodgers sweat in the final five minutes but he was sacked on third down at the Green Bay 29. The Patriots then missed a field goal.

The game basically ended when Rodgers shockingly made another pinpoint pass. It was a Green Bay first down. Cameras caught Brady on the sideline after that play screaming F k three times. That's the competitor in Brady.

Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback Belichick told reporters after the game. As mundane as that quote seems you won't hear Belichick use that word often to describe quarterbacks. Or almost any player for that matter.

Rodgers finished 24 of 38 for 368 yards and two passing touchdowns. He didn't throw an interception and also rushed for 22 yards. Brady threw for 245 yards two scores and was also without a pick. Rodgers tied Peyton Manning at six games for most in the Super Bowl era with two passing touchdowns and no interceptions in a game at home. Brady and Brett Favre both have five.

This season at home Rodgers has 20 touchdown passes and no interceptions. 20 0.

What you see with Rodgers is a quarterback who combines all of the great aspects of quarterbacks throughout history. He has the accuracy of Joe Montana the savvy of John Unitas and Brett Favre the arm strength of Dan Marino the escapability of Steve Young the brains of Warren Moon the study habits of Peyton Manning and the competitive drive of the legend he just beat.

Rodgers is all of those things and more. No again that's not hyperbole. That's a fact. That's how good he's become.

The current legend and the future one battled and Rodgers won. That's not a shock. It's what Rodgers does.

Because he's the best maybe the best we've ever seen.

Rapid Reaction Oakland Raiders

A few thoughts on the Oakland Raiders' 52 0 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday

What does it mean The Raiders seemed eager to build off their first and so far only win and had hoped to create some late season momentum. Instead they came out got punched in the mouth and never got off the mat. This one was ugly in every facet and that s putting it lightly. This is the second worst shutout loss in franchise history (the Raiders were pummeled 55 0 by Houston on Sept. 9 1961) and it was easily the ugliest defeat of this season. There were the usual allotment of missed tackles and blown assignments and that was when things went well. The low point probably came when backup quarterback Matt Schaub came into the game in the fourth quarter and threw an interception that was returned for the game's final touchdown. Now it will be interesting to see if interim coach Tony Sparano can get his team to play with any sort of fervor over the final four weeks. At no point during the first 11 games did Oakland show any kind of quit but that has to be a major concern heading down the stretch after this one.

Stock watch down For the first time this season quarterback Derek Carr played like a rookie almost from start to finish. He was under a great deal of pressure from the Rams defense much of the day and couldn t get settled into any sort of rhythm with his receivers. A week after showing good poise while leading the Raiders on a lengthy game winning drive in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs Carr was clearly rattled by St. Louis aggressive defense. He threw two interceptions including one while he was being tackled and should have just taken the sack. Just a rough afternoon all the way around for the young quarterback.

Game ball Not really sure anyone deserves one this week but we ll go with defensive end Justin Tuck. Although he got beaten on Tavon Austin s end around touchdown run Tuck provided the few highlights Oakland had with a sack two tackles for loss and one pass defensed.

What s next Oakland limps home with a 1 11 record that is the worst in the NFL. Can it get worse Absolutely. The Raiders host San Francisco (7 5) next Sunday in a battle for bragging rights in the Bay Area. From an emotional standpoint this game means much more to the fans of both teams than it does for the players. From a practical standpoint the 49ers need a win to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive. The Raiders aren't going anywhere in the postseason but clearly need whatever positive momentum they can get.

Ohio State beats Michigan but J.T. Barrett lost for season with injury

What Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was tasked with at the beginning of the season seemed downright Herculean. After Heisman Trophy hopeful Braxton Miller went down with an injury Barrett was asked to step in and lead a potent Buckeyes offense. Entering Saturday he had not only thrived but also carried his team to the brink of an improbable College Football Playoff bid.

In one play it was all wiped away like some sort of cruel football Etch A Sketch. The redshirt freshman from Wichita Falls Texas was injured on the first snap of the fourth quarter in Ohio State s 42 28 win over Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

Ohio State s postseason hopes were undoubtedly tied to Barrett who was carted off the field after lying crumpled beneath a Michigan defender following a run for no gain. He was given an inflatable cast and clapped his hands in frustration as the cart headed for the tunnel. The school later announced the injury was a right ankle fracture. Barrett will have surgery on Sunday and is out for the rest of the season.

Backup quarterback Cardale Jones came in with Ohio State leading 28 21 and stars Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa promptly put the game away. Elliott dashed for a 44 yard score while Bosa forced a Devin Gardner fumble that Darron Lee recovered and ran back for a touchdown.

Before the injury Barrett was having another signature game in a year filled with them. He broke former Purdue standout Drew Brees Big Ten record for total touchdowns (43) in a single season on six yard toss to Nick Vannett in the first quarter. He scampered 25 yards to tie the score at 14 with seven seconds left in the first half. He hit Devin Smith for a 52 yard gain on the opening sequence of the third quarter and he scored a two yard rushing touchdown on the next play.

On ESPN s College GameDay this morning quarterback guru George Whitfield said Notre Dame s Everett Golson often tries to be Superman when the team needs him to be Clark Kent. Barrett is the opposite. He had no problem being Kent and his remarkable consistency is the primary reason the Buckeyes are sitting at 11 1.

This costly win over Michigan doesn t knock the Buckeyes out of the playoff race as every team vying for a spot in the top four has won ugly. Still the loss of Barrett heading into the Big Ten title game is huge for an Ohio State squad that has struggled to defend the run. The Buckeyes don t seem to trust backup quarterback Jones with the full playbook and offensive coordinator Tom Herman must decide what to do now that such a big part of his game plan missing.

The playoff selection committee has already noted it will factor injuries into its decision making so Ohio State without Barrett could be viewed very differently. That s all most fans will likely want to discuss in the playoff era but watching a playmaker like Barrett go down this way is a shame plain and simple.

As for Michigan this loss could be the end of coach Brady Hoke s tenure. The Wolverines drop to 5 7 overall and 31 20 in Hoke s four years in Ann Arbor.

Meanwhile the Buckeyes are left searching for answers before their trip to Indianapolis. Regardless Barrett deserves an invitation to New York for the Heisman ceremony even if he arrives on crutches.

TUSCALOOSA Both Alabama coach Nick Saban and Missouri s Gary Pinkel spent a mandatory 30 minutes on the SEC Championship Game coaches teleconference Sunday.

The Crimson Tide s win over Auburn didn t finish until late in the night so that coupled with other responsibilities hadn t given Saban much time to study the Tide's opponent in Saturday's SEC title game Missouri.

But Saban did however provide updates on some key injured players and other news.

The biggest piece of injury news was the status of starting left tackle Cam Robinson. Saban said Robinson suffered a sprained shoulder in the Iron Bowl.

We re hopeful that he ll be back in a day or two and be able to practice Saban said. Right now he s day to day.

The injury happened on quarterback Blake Sims 11 yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Robinson left the game and didn t return. Starting right tackle Austin Shepherd moved to Robinson s spot and sophomore Grant Hill came in at right tackle.

Along with moving parts on the offensive line the Tide also did some shuffling in the secondary but not because of injuries.

Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson was repeatedly torched by Auburn s wide receivers in the first half.

Because of the complicated schemes Alabama runs on defense it is often tough to tell if a cornerback is truly getting beaten or if he was supposed to have safety help.

But on the big plays Jackson allowed he appeared to be beaten in man to man coverage.

Jackson took to Twitter after the game to address his performance.

I played a horrible game yesterday I apologize to all my fans but all I know how to do is Bounce Back Believe that Jackson wrote.

Jackson gave up plays to both Auburn wide receiver Sammie Coates and Duke Williams. Jackson was lined up on Coates on the touchdowns of 34 and 68 yards in the second quarter.

Jackson was replaced by freshman Tony Brown to start the second half. Brown didn t last long as he was in coverage on an Auburn touchdown at the start of the third quarter. Junior Bradley Sylve came in for Brown and finished the game.

Saban said Sylve did a nice job during his time but he wasn t ready to declare a starter.

We ll see how things go in practice this week and make a decision later on in the week about that Saban said.

The cornerbacks weren t the only players to rotate. Alabama also used multiple kickers. After sitting out against Western Carolina to rest an injury Alabama kicker Adam Griffith was in for the game s opening kickoff on Saturday. Griffith sent it out of bounds and was taken off of kickoff duties for the rest of the game.

True freshman punter JK Scott took over the kickoff duties with walk on Gunnar Raborn filling in on extra points and field goals. But after Raborn had an extra point blocked midway through the third Griffith was forced back into action.

We want Griff to kick Saban said. We re trying to manage him through some of his health issues. Hopefully he ll feel a little better and do a little more kicking and be ready to kick in the game.

Saints tight end Jimmy Graham shut out as Steelers undercut crossing routes

Pittsburgh Drew Brees threw five touchdowns in the New Orleans Saints' 35 32 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Jimmy Graham didn't have any of them.

The Saints' star tight end also caught zero of Brees' 19 completions and was not the intended target on any of Brees' 27 attempts.

The Steelers effectively kept Graham from impacting the game but Graham implied they might have won the battle but lost the war freeing up other receivers for opportunities. Nine of his teammates caught at least one pass.

For me it's all about the W's said Graham who also was held without a catch vs. Detroit earlier this season. I don't care if it's zero catches 10 catches or 20 as long as you win.

Graham praised Steelers safeties Troy Polamalu and Will Allen for having done their homework.

When the safeties guessed sometimes making risky gambles they usually guessed right.

When there wasn't help over the top the safeties would break on Graham's crossing routes. In other words they would jump ahead of him to cut him off rather than waiting for Graham to reveal his intentions.

Usually (defenders) wait until I break said Graham. (Polamalu and Allen) are smart players. I can tell that they're watching a lot of film and looking at tendencies and formations and splits.

Graham said he would have to watch film to see if the Steelers were keying on any of his tendencies or if the Saints could exploit future opponents who try to do the same.

Literally they would just undercut all of my routes Graham said. We'll watch film and we'll look at ways we can expose that. That's just how it is.

Browns QB Johnny Manziel scores first TD in relief of Brian Hoyer

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills during the second half at Ralph Wilson Stadium.(Photo Kevin Hoffman USA TODAY Sports)

Early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's seemingly hopeless game in Buffalo Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine made the move he had been hoping he wouldn't have to make all season.

Veteran starting quarterback Brian Hoyer was sent to the bench. Rookie Johnny Manziel was sent into the huddle. And now with the Browns a game back of Cincinnati but very much still alive in the AFC North race can the Browns go back to Hoyer

That's the question Pettine and his offensive coaching staff couldn't answer Sunday evening after a 26 10 loss to the Bills but they will have to solve by Wednesday morning when they start practicing for next week's game against Indianapolis.

Pettine on Sunday declined to commit to either Hoyer or Manziel saying he needed to look at the film of the game in Buffalo as well everything that happened earlier this season.

It's always a cumulative body of work decision so we'll get through the tape and put it all out there on the table and make a decision that best fits the team Pettine said.

FOR THE WIN

Johnny Manziel's mad scramble leads to first NFL touchdown

The Browns have been adamant since mid August when they declared Hoyer the winner of the preseason quarterback competition that Hoyer was the right man to lead the Browns out of their doldrums and for much of the year Hoyer had proven his coaches right leading the Browns to seven wins before Thanksgiving or two more wins than the Browns had had in any season since 2007.

But the last month has not been kind to Hoyer. He's thrown just one touchdown pass and six interceptions in the last four games and needed a last second drive to beat Atlanta last week. After he threw his second interception on Sunday in Buffalo Pettine made the switch.

I'm not going to put it all on Brian Pettine said. To me I wanted to make a move. It's like taking your goalie out when he's given up a bunch. Sometimes you need change for the sake of change.

Pettine approached Manziel on the sideline and told the rookie to get loose. Manziel who hadn't played in a specialty package since Week 3 and hasn't run the Browns offense since the preseason finale in August needed confirmation from his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that he was indeed replacing Hoyer.

Manziel admitted later he was nervous as he jogged into the huddle mostly concerned that he would actually be able to call the right plays a combination of bootlegs passes and quarterback runs designed to play to his strengths.

For one drive Manziel gave the Browns a spark that had largely been missing for the last month. He rolled out of the pocket and threw an accurate pass to Miles Austin while on the run he zinged a pass to tight end Jim Dray on a seam route slipping the ball into Dray's arms despite tight coverage. Then he looked like vintage college Manziel darting through a hole in the Buffalo defense for a 10 yard touchdown run celebrating his first NFL score with his signature money hand gesture.

It was a display of exactly what Manziel could give the Browns that Hoyer can't.

PHOTOS Johnny Manziel in Cleveland

But just as quickly as Manziel gave his bosses reason to keep him in the lineup for the rest of the season he provided a reminder of just how inexperienced he is. Manziel miscommunicated the snap count and he wasn't ready for the ball when it was snapped to him. Manziel bobbled the ball and then fumbled it while being hit. He laid on his back at the goal line as the ball bounced backwards in the end zone recovered for an apparent touchdown for the Bills.

Even after officials ruled Manziel threw an incomplete pass wiping away that Buffalo touchdown Manziel knew he had messed up.

My fault Manziel said. I was trying to throw it away and it got jarred loose. I never thought it was an incomplete pass.

Now Pettine with the assistance of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains and likely general manager Ray Farmer will return to Cleveland to analyze Hoyer's 12 starts and Manziel's limited live game action. They'll look at the AFC North standings too and how they trail Cincinnati by 1.5 games but remain in a three way tie for second place. They'll look at the upcoming schedule with back to back home games against Indianapolis and the Bengals and decide if the change Pettine made Sunday afternoon should be permanent.

I think that's up to coach Pettine and higher up people than me. If that is the case if my name is called I definitely will be ready Manziel said.

Hoyer's contract with the Browns expires after this season so the Pettine's choice this week might have bigger implications than just next week's game against the Colts. Still Hoyer won't be just conceding the starting job to Manziel. He said Sunday evening that he still considers the Browns to be his team and admitted it was hard to watch someone else doing your job.

This is my team. I've always felt that way. We'll see what happens Hoyer said.

Paul Walker Remembered on 1 Year Anniversary of His Death

Hundreds of people lined up Sunday to honor and pay their respects to actor Paul Walker and his friend Roger Rodas at the Santa Clarita crash site where the two men died exactly one year ago.

A photo tweeted out by the Santa Clarita Valley s sheriff s station showed people lining up behind orange traffic cones and barricades on Rye Canyon Loop the street where both men were killed on Nov. 30 2013 when the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT that Rodas was driving crashed and burst into flames.

Waves of people visited the crash site Sunday with an estimated 500 people showing up at one point according to Deputy Josh Dubin.

We re just asking people to obey the cone patterns and traffic laws. Everyone has been pretty good so far Dubin said.

Paul Walker and Roger Rodas are shown in a photo posted on December 15 2010 to the Always Evolving Facebook page.

The cause of the crash was later determined to be unsafe speed for the roadway conditions the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department stated in March. The car was traveling between 80 and 93 mph at the time of the collision.

The posted speed limit on the road was 45 mph.

Walker and Rodas were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Both men were wearing seat belts and neither had drugs or alcohol in their system according to the autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner that was released in January.

Walker 40 died of the combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries the coroner s reports stated.

The 38 year old Rodas suffered major head trauma and died rapidly of severe blunt head neck and chest trauma according to the report.

I feel his presence every day he said according to the cable news station. I miss talking to him a great deal. He had a good heart.

Walker s Fast and Furious co star Tyrese Gibson also paid tribute to the actor Sunday posting a photo of Walker and himself to his Facebook page.

Aaron Rodgers outduels Tom Brady in Packers win

Aaron Rodgers threw for 368 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 26 21 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday. Our takeaways

1. We were denied a chance to see Rodgers in a two minute drill with the game on the line when Ha Ha Clinton Dix knocked the ball out of a diving Rob Gronkowski's hands in the end zone. Tom Brady was sacked on third down the following play ending the Patriots' comeback hopes. As expected Rodgers and Brady put on a quarterback clinic trading beautiful throws throughout the afternoon. It has been roughly two years 360 pass attempts and 31 touchdowns since Rodgers' last interception at Lambeau Field. He has to be the favorite for MVP honors this season.

2. Beyond the marquee quarterback matchup the battle between Darrelle Revis and Jordy Nelson was a joy to watch. As stingy as any cornerback over the past month Revis was excellent save for Nelson's 45 yard touchdown that put the Packers ahead by two scores at the half. Nelson and Randall Cobb became the first pair of wide receivers in franchise history with at least 10 touchdowns in a season.

3. With the Cardinals losing again on Sunday the Packers are in pole position for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. That's a problem for the rest of the NFC as Lambeau has been the most dominant home field in the NFL this year. Meanwhile the Patriots' margin for error as the AFC's top seed has slimmed. They do still enjoy a tiebreaker advantage over the Broncos Colts and Bengals.

4. After getting benched against the Lions Week 11 breakout star Jonas Gray didn't see the field until the final play of the third quarter. He was the fourth running back in the rotation Sunday working behind LeGarrette Blount Shane Vereen and even special teamer Brandon Bolden.

5. Rookie wide receiver Davante Adams had the best game of his young career with 121 yards on a team high 11 targets but dropped a crucial third down pass that would have gone for a touchdown. If Sunday is a sign of big plays to come Rodgers will be dicing up defenses with the most complete wide receiver corps in the league.

6. After a slow start to the season Eddie Lacy is averaging 5.0 yards per carry since Week 5. He has combined for 46 carries the past two weeks after being limited to 17 or fewer in the first 11 games. The Packers have shown a more balanced offense of late which is a good sign for the stretch run.

7. Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower deserves Pro Bowl recognition this season. He and breakout star Jamie Collins combined for 22 tackles two sacks and two more tackles for loss on Sunday.

8. Thriving with an accurate quarterback Brandon LaFell has already set season highs in receptions (53) yards (712) and touchdowns (7).

Peyton deserves credit for turning E.Sanders into a Pro Bowler...but how 'bout what Brady's done for LaFell 13 career TDs pre '14 7 in '14

Philip Rivers tosses last minute TD to lift Chargers over Ravens

BALTIMORE Playing on the road against a playoff quality team Philip Rivers would have been delighted with a win no matter how it occurred.

The manner in which the San Diego Chargers beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday well it doesn't get much better than that for a veteran quarterback looking to carry his team into the playoffs.

More from ESPN.com

The Chargers proved escape artists again beating the Ravens to improve to 8 4 and stay in the thick of the playoff hunt writes Eric. D. Williams. Story

With a patchwork secondary that may be the worst in the NFL the Ravens can't afford the type of mistakes and penalties that plagued them Sunday Jamison Hensley writes. Story

San Diego trailed the entire game until Rivers capped a 1 yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal with 38 seconds to go giving the Chargers a 34 33 victory.

The Chargers (8 4) trailed 30 20 with 6 13 remaining and 33 27 with 2 22 left before Rivers brought them back.

These are the kind of games you got to win to get in (the postseason) and these are the kind of games you got to win if you do get in Rivers said. I'm not saying you're going to win all of them but if you can't win these you're not good enough.

Each team punted just once. Both offenses were clicking all day long which made the outcome all that much sweeter for Rivers.

Just the way we won. It was back and forth back and forth never quit he said. We got one more point than they had.

Following a pass interference call against Anthony Levine in the end zone Rivers hit Royal to conclude an 80 yard drive and give the Chargers their third straight victory.

Rivers went 34 for 45 for 383 yards and three touchdowns two to Keenan Allen.

Tip our hat to the Chargers and Philip Rivers Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. Obviously a great quarterback and that made the difference.

Baltimore (7 5) lost at home in November for the first time since 2009. The Ravens who were 11 0 all time at home against West Coast teams fell 1 games behind AFC North leader Cincinnati.

The defense accepted the blame even though it forced two turnovers.

In the NFL nothing is game set match as long as there is time on the clock linebacker Terrell Suggs said. We're up 10 at home in the fourth quarter and our offense gave us 33 points and usually that's enough. It wasn't. That's why this is extremely disappointing.

The Ravens last lost a game when they scored 30 points in October 2009 a 33 31 defeat at Minnesota. The last time it happened at home was in 2007 33 30 in overtime against Cleveland.

Joe Flacco threw for two scores for Baltimore which wasted four field goals from Justin Tucker and 106 yards rushing from Justin Forsett.

It was 23 20 before Flacco directed a 12 play drive that seemingly provided the Ravens with some breathing room. A 31 yard completion to Jacoby Jones followed by a pass interference call against Shareece Wright led to the third down quarterback sneak that made it a 10 point game.

Rivers responded with a 77 yard drive capped by a 23 yard touchdown pass to Allen with 3 40 remaining.

Jones took the kickoff 72 yards to the San Diego 30 setting up Tucker's fourth field goal. It wasn't enough for the Ravens who hadn't lost at home since the season opener.

San Diego on the other hand got off to an excellent start in a season ending stretch drive that began in Baltimore and concludes with games against New England Denver San Francisco and Kansas City.

The players never gave up and we just kept plugging away coach Mike McCoy said. That's what good teams do. The character of our team once again showed up and when you've got a great quarterback like Philip Rivers you got a chance to win every game just as long as there's time left on the clock.

Rivers' longest completion of the year a 59 yarder to Malcom Floyd led to a 26 yard field goal by Nick Novak to bring the Chargers to 16 13 early in the third quarter.

On the ensuing drive Flacco misfired from the San Diego 39. But Eric Weddle inexplicably pushed Flacco to the ground drawing a roughing the passer penalty. Five plays later Flacco connected with Torrey Smith on a 10 yard pass for a 23 13 lead.

San Diego's only punt came with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Ravens' lone punt occurred with 23 seconds to go in the period.

The Chargers converted all seven third down tries in the first half but Baltimore took advantage of two turnovers and scored on all four of its possessions for a 16 10 lead.

Game notes Forsett went over 1 000 yards for the first time in his seven year career. He's at 1 009. ... Baltimore WR Marlon Brown landed hard on his back after making a first down catch in the first quarter and left with a concussion. ... Chargers C Chris Watt took a hit on his calf in the third quarter and did not return.

Oakland Raiders vs. St. Louis Rams Full Report Card Grades for St. Louis

The defensive line harassed Oakland quarterback Derek Carr like no other team this season. It was a long day for the rookie passer.

Chris Long injured his ankle in Week 1 per NFL.com and this was his first game back from the injury. He managed to record his first sack of the season and even had a takeaway.

In the second half Robert Quinn put a big hit on Matt Schaub and the ball came loose (one of two forced fumbles for Quinn in the game). Long even though he lost his helmet dove toward the ball and made the recovery.

Quinn finished the game with three sacks bringing his season total to nine.

Aaron Donald also got in the backfield. He recorded his sixth sack of the year and the rookie No. 13 overall pick continues to make a case for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The gutsy play by the front four was visible all game. The Rams recorded six sacks and eventually forced Carr out of the game (Oakland presumably feared for his health) and the Raiders struggled to put anything together due to the constant disruption.

Kosta Karageorge found dead near Ohio States campus

Missing Ohio State football player Kosta Karageorge was found dead Sunday of what appeared to be a self inflicted gunshot wound Columbus Police confirmed.

Sgt. Richard Weiner said Karageorge who had been missing since Wednesday after sending a text message about concussions was found in a dumpster near campus with a gun.

The Ohio State University Department of Athletics was shocked and saddened to learn today of the death of student athlete Kosta Karageorge a senior from Columbus the school said in a statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Karageorge family and those who knew him during this most difficult time.

USA TODAY

Mom Missing Ohio State player texted about concussions

Karageorge was 22.

The 6 5 285 pound defensive tackle had tattoos that helped confirm the death Columbus police said. An official police report is expected later this week.

Karageorge's mother told authorities he has had concussions and spells of confusion an earlier police report said. She said he texted a message Wednesday citing the concussions and saying he was sorry if he was an embarrassment.

After Karageorge went missing the team's physician Jim Borchers said he could not comment on the medical care of student athletes. But he added We are confident in our medical procedures and policies to return athletes to participation following injury or illness.

Julian Bailes neurosurgeon with the NorthShore Neurological Institute of suburban Chicago said it is too early and the information is too incomplete to speculate on whether the death was related to concussions or the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

It's somewhat conjecture to think that's what led to his (apparent) suicide. We just don't know said Bailes a CTE researcher. He is certainly not the typical CTE guy only in college and so forth. So you don't know.

The other things which are often associated with suicide are mental health issues and/or drug or substance abuse. I just don't know. I just read a little bit about it the day he went a missing.

There are so many factors associated with suicide. You just don't know.

CTE is diagnosed by examination of the brain after death. Researchers have linked the disease to repetitive head trauma. It was diagnosed in the brains of former NFL players who committed suicide such as Mike Webster Junior Seau and Dave Duerson.

(Whether to have the brain examined) would be up to his family and then maybe even the medical examiner depending on the circumstances of his death Bailes said.

If there's a legal issue of circumstances was it foul play or unknown or so forth the medical examiner could chose to do it. But otherwise the family would have to request it.

The Buckeyes defeated Michigan on Saturday 42 28. Defensive lineman Michael Bennett said afterward that Karageorge missed practices and that teammates started getting nervous Thursday.

Bo Pelini fired after 7 years 66 27 record at Nebraska

Bo Pelini beat Iowa 37 34 in his last game on Friday.(Photo Eric Francis / Getty Images)

Lincoln Neb. Bo Pelini was fired as Nebraska's football coach on Sunday after a seven year stint marked by an inability to restore the program to national prominence and too many embarrassing defeats.

Pelini extended his streak of winning at least nine games every season with a 37 34 overtime win at Iowa on Friday but he never won a conference championship and his teams lost four games in every season he completed.

Pelini was 66 27 and led the Cornhuskers to three league championship games in the Big 12 and Big Ten.

Earlier this morning I informed Coach Bo Pelini of our decision to move forward in a new direction athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in a statement. Coach Pelini served our University admirably for seven years and led our football program's transition to the Big Ten Conference.

Eichorst will hold an afternoon news conference.

Asked for comment Pelini wrote in a text to The Associated Press I'm good. Thanks for asking

Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. tweeted Biggest mistake you ever made . Bo was the best coach I've ever had and I'll always appreciate the things you taught me.

Associate head coach Barney Cotton a Nebraska alum will be the interim head coach for the Cornhuskers' bowl game.

Pelini was under contract through February 2019. The university will owe him a settlement of about $7.5 million which can be reduced by a certain amount once he lands another job.

Pelini brought the Huskers out of the depths of the failed four year Bill Callahan experiment that ended in 2007 his four losses a year habit and frequent bad losses on the national stage wore on a fan base that has filled Memorial Stadium for every home game since 1962.

Those fans have been conditioned to expect excellence. Nebraska ranks fourth in all time victories and has won five national championships including three in the four years before Tom Osborne retired as coach after the 1997 season.

The dominant run of success in the mid 1990s has been an albatross for the coaches who followed first Frank Solich and then Callahan and Pelini.

Bad losses started to haunt Pelini after Nebraska moved to the Big Ten and they became the program's identity. There was the 70 31 beatdown by unranked Wisconsin in the 2012 conference championship game and last year there were one sided losses to UCLA Minnesota and Iowa.

Pelini's undoing might have been the 59 24 loss at Wisconsin on Nov. 15 when Melvin Gordon ran for a then FBS record 408 yards. The next week the Huskers squandered a 14 point halftime lead at home while losing 28 24 to then unranked Minnesota.

Nebraska as a ranked team lost seven games by 17 or more points since 2011. No other ranked team has lost so many games so lopsidedly over that span according to STATS.

I fully support Shawn's decision to make a change in the leadership of our football program and wish Bo and his family all of the best chancellor Harvey Perlman said. I am confident that Shawn will find the best coach teacher and fit for this university and for our football program.

Pelini criticized for a defensive scheme that couldn't seem to stop the run also drew detractors for his volatile temper.

He also was reprimanded by Perlman for sideline meltdowns where he ripped into officials and quarterback Taylor Martinez during a loss at Texas AM in 2010. After cameras in 2012 captured a couple of Pelini tongue lashings Perlman said the coach was a victim of his reputation and that within reason (fans) have to accept him for who he is.

Last year though Perlman and Eichorst had to put out a fire after the website Deadspin released audio of Pelini's profanity laced tirade against what he called fair weather fans and two newspaper writers.

Pelini had initially endeared himself to Nebraska fans when he served as Solich's defensive coordinator in 2003. Pelini was interim head coach after Solich was fired in 2003 after going 9 3 in the regular season and he was in charge for the Huskers' Alamo Bowl victory over Michigan State. As he walked off the field in San Antonio Husker fans chanted We want Bo

Callahan was hired instead and Pelini took defensive coordinator jobs at Oklahoma and LSU winning the 2007 national title with the Tigers.

Osborne as athletic director picked Pelini to replace Callahan saying the program needed an immediate defensive fix.

After the Huskers shut out Arizona 33 0 in the 2009 Holiday Bowl Pelini famously shouted Nebraska's back and we're here to stay.

Pelini's proclamation proved premature.

The Art Of Online Apologies And Why Elizabeth Lauten Failed Miserably At Hers

Safe to say that Elizabeth Lauten does not like Malia and Sasha Obama all that much.

Or maybe she likes them but she does not like their style. Or the faces they make during one of the most ridiculous of American holiday traditions (it s a low bar.) Or their family specifically the role their parents provide in being role models. Or the apparent lack of class and respect.

Or the irritating way that they act like teenage girls. As if they are actually 13 year old and 16 year old teenage girls.

At the annual Thanksgiving pardoning of a turkey performed by Barack Obama The Most Powerful Man in the Free World (who has nothing better to do with his time than participate in this ceremony of officially pardoning a bird) the Obama daughters dutifully showed up for the cameras to watch as their Dad made terrible Dad jokes on national television.

Photo Associated Press

They smiled and nodded and laughed awkwardly as if they were teenage kids who would rather be ANYWHERE but front and center on television as an entire nation watched their Dad make terrible Dad jokes.

After seeing a similar photo to the one above Elizabeth Lauten the communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher (R Tenn.) took to her own Facebook to share her thoughts on fashion and demeanor of the Obama girls

Dear Sasha and Malia I get you re both in those awful teen years but you re a part of the First Family try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don t respect their positions very much or the nation for that matter so I m guessing you re coming up a little short in the good role model department. Nevertheless stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect not a spot at a bar. And certainly don t make faces during televised public events.

Just to recap anyone else who is as completely baffled how a political communications director could commit such an offensive social networking faux pas The Obama girls showed up for an completely boring and useless press event endure the silly parental embarrassment most of us only have to endure over the family dinner table and they wore outfits. That are apparently scandalous.

So scandalous in fact that Elizabeth Lauten felt compelled to turn her personal Facebook into a Capital Hill Burn Book.

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett should be ready but limited for spring ...

COLUMBUS Ohio Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett had surgery on his broken right ankle Sunday morning and is expected to be ready but limited for spring football practice in March and April Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Sunday.

Barrett broke his ankle in the fourth quarter of Ohio State's 42 28 win over Michigan on Saturday and it was announced that he would be lost for the season. Cardale Jones is taking over at quarterback for the Big Ten Championship on Saturday where the Buckeyes are facing Big Ten West champion Wisconsin.

There's a lot still on the table for Ohio State this season including a shot at the College Football Playoff. But there's a future as well.

Meyer said Barret's surgery was successful and a plate was placed in his ankle. Meyer said Barrett's father is in town from Texas and is staying with his son who will stay in the Ohio State University Medical Center overnight. He said the expectation is for Barrett to be ready for spring ball fully able to throw but limited in his running.

Meyer wasn't specific but that sounds like it would be unlikely that Barrett would play in the spring football game. But he could be out there for practice.

Meyer said the injury is similar to the one suffered by receiver Evan Spencer in the Orange Bowl last year. While Spencer was limited in the spring he was back for preseason practice in August.

Quarterback health is always of importance to OSU's 2015 season. Braxton Miller who required a second shoulder surgery in August and was lost for the season is still expected back at this point. Given the typical timeframe for an injury like that Miller very well won't be available for spring football.

Ohio State will have other quarterback options in the spring. There will be Jones. Stephen Collier is redshirting this year and Meyer said the staff will discuss if the team would remove his redshirt and play him if anything happened to Jones. The other option now would be using H back and Wildcat QB Jalin Marshall who was a high school quarterback as the full time quarterback.

Ohio State also has two quarterback recruits coming in with the 2015 recruiting class with Joey Burrow and Torrance Gibson.

But Barrett is the guy the Buckeyes want back now. He should be there in some way in the spring. He should be all the way back by next preseason.

Belichick Aaron Rodgers like Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning combined

Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn't have much to say this week when he was asked to compare Tom Brady to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

As a matter of fact he only had five words to to say They both wear No. 12 Belichick said on Wednesday.

Belichick may not have been willing to compare Rodgers with Brady but he was willing to compare Rodgers to two other pretty decent quarterbacks. During an interview on the Patriots All Access show on the team's official website Belichick said Rodgers plays like Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning combined.

Offensively of course it starts with the quarterback Aaron Rodgers Belichick said of the Packers offense via CSNNE.com. He does a tremendous job of running the team. He's very athletic. His scrambling ability and passing ability is almost like Luck and Manning combined if you will.

Bill Belichick says that Aaron Rodgers is a hybrid of two quarterbacks. (USATSI)

On one hand that's probably one of the best compliments Belichick has ever given an opponent. On the other hand though the Patriots have beaten Luck and Manning's teams by a combined score of 85 41 this season so maybe Patriots fans don't need to worry about this Luck Manning crossbreed who was clearly developed in a lab somewhere.

We'll find out if this Luck Manning hybrid can beat New England when the Patriots and Packers kick off from Green Bay at 4 25 p.m. ET in a game that will be televised by CBS.

Did Bo Pelini deserve to lose his job at Nebraska

Reese Strickland/USA TODAY Sports

Despite winning 66 games in seven years as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers Bo Pelini was dismissed Sunday after finishing the regular season 9 3. Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst announced the news less than 24 hours after the Cornhuskers beat Iowa 37 34 in overtime.

Almost one year ago to the day when Pelini s future was up in the air the coach famously told reporters if they want to fire me go ahead after a loss to Iowa. There s no doubting that Pelini s overall record was tremendous but it comes with a few caveats. Pelini won nine games or more every year since 2008 but the Cornhuskers never won the Big 12 or Big Ten championship.

Pelini had a 3 3 record in bowl games (he also won a bowl game coaching Nebraska in 2003 as an interim coach) but the Cornhuskers haven t played in a BCS bowl (now a playoff bowl) since 2002. Pelini s Cornhuskers were 7 17 against ranked teams. Pelini s relationship with the fanbase was strained in 2013 when a recording of the coach using profane language while criticizing fans surfaced. Nebraska has always been good but they haven t been great for more than a decade and Eichorst finally decided to move in a new direction.

Bo Pelini is the first coach in the history of P5 program fired (for on field performance) after winning more than 7 games in first 7 years.

The Ravens who were 11 0 all time at home against West Coast teams fell 1 1 2 games behind AFC North leader Cincinnati.

Chaos grips UK stores at Black Friday sales

Black Friday chaos spread across the pond to Britain as customers trampled each other in scenes police compared to a mini riot.

In an effort to grab the hottest deals customers crushed each other and got into disputes at seven stores in northern England belonging to supermarket giant Tesco said Chief Constable of the Greater Manchester Police Peter Fahy. Police were forced to close many of the stores he said.

As the situation spiraled out of control three people were arrested a woman's wrist was broken a TV was dropped on a shopper in a wheelchair and a security guard was punched Fahy said.

The chaos comes as an increasing number of U.K. retailers take part in Black Friday including through online deals. Visa predicted U.K. shoppers would spend roughly $810 million online using credit cards Friday which would make it Britain's biggest Internet shopping day in history the BBC reported.

This is the first year I've ever heard of Black Friday in the U.K. said Melinda Neunie as she pursued Topshop's flagship store in London's Oxford Circus to take advantage of discounts up to 50%.

In London police responded to reports of large crowds gathering at three Tesco stores. Nobody was injured and no arrests were made. Police were also called to locations including Dundee Glasgow and Cardiff the BBC reported.

Also visiting Topshop to take advantage of the deals Maira Khan said she hadn't seen the chaotic scenes that had engulfed other stores. I think it's an excuse to go out and shop she said of Black Friday coming to the U.K.

Describing the events in Greater Manchester as reasonably predicable Fahy said the stores did not have sufficient security staff on duty.

Across Greater Manchester large supermarkets already make significant demands on policing through calls to shoplifting anti social behavior and thefts of fuel from their petrol stations much of which is preventable he said. We just ask these stores to work with us to reduce the demands on policing and reduce the risks of disorder and crime.

In a statement Tesco said a small number of stores were affected but were open and operating normally.

We work closely with the police authorities and take guidance on security measures in stores and we will work with them following this event to make any improvements for next year the company said.

With Egg Bowl loss Mississippi State and College Football Playoff left to ...

Mississippi Rebels quarterback Bo Wallace (14) drops back to pass the ball during the game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. (Spruce Derden/USA TODAY Sports)

OXFORD Miss. Amid the chaos he kept the prize tucked safely away. First in his left arm and then sensing potential danger he shifted it to his right. The game was over Ole Miss 31 Mississippi State 17 but Bo Wallace was not letting go.

Not this time the Rebels quarterback said. I m keeping the football.

GAME REPORT Ole Miss likely spoils Mississippi State s Playoff hopes

Away from the chaos Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen surveyed the damage and denied what had been ripped away from the Bulldogs. Standing just outside the visitors locker room he said

I didn t think we were getting in the playoff anyway.

Maybe Mullen was correct. Perhaps the Bulldogs who started the day No. 4 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 would have been leapfrogged by TCU Ohio State or Baylor by the time the final rankings were released.

I m sure we made a lot of people around the country happy Mullen said. And maybe a lot of (selection) committee members breathed a big sigh of relief right now. They don t have to consider it.

But as he added We ll never know.

And on Saturday evening at Vaught Hemingway Stadium Mullen insisted that the rubble that remained of Mississippi State s place in the bigger picture was only collateral damage. He knows only this the next 364 days will suck.

This is as tough as it gets Mullen said. I don t care about the stakes. This game is for bragging rights in the state. It s the most important game we play. So obviously it is a devastating loss.

WEEK 14 Winners and losers

Or because both sides of a fierce rivalry are inevitably bound up together it was an exhilarating victory. That was the biggest thing according to both sides and there s no real reason to doubt them. Since Mullen s arrival Mississippi State had won four of five games against Ole Miss which he referred to Saturday night as them and regularly calls That School Up North.

When Mullen said later It s just disgusting to lose this game Wallace might as well have been standing next to him nodding.

Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen (L) talks to Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott (15) against the Mississippi Rebels at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels won 31 17. (Spruce Derden/USA TODAY Sports)

A year ago overtime in Starkville Wallace had the football headed for the end zone for the tying touchdown when it was poked loose. Mississippi State recovered. Game over.

There wasn t a day that went by that I didn t think about it Wallace said.

Which is why he knelt one final time Saturday draining the final seconds off the clock and then hung tightly onto that football until he got to the locker room and handed it off to his parents.

We ll put it in the trophy case and keep it forever he said.

For a year anyway the Rebels will do the same with the Golden Egg. But no one denied that eliminating Mississippi State (10 2 6 2 SEC) from the playoff picture was a very nice bonus.

Only a few weeks ago after Ole Miss upset Alabama on this same field it seemed the Rebels and Bulldogs might be headed for a monumental showdown. But Ole Miss lost three SEC games in a row and could only watch as Mississippi State began to distance itself from its in state rival. First the Bulldogs ascended to No. 1 in the polls and then after a loss to Alabama fell only to the No. 4 slot in the all important College Football Playoff rankings still in position to make the tournament.

We felt we were a better team than them Wallace said. We should have been in that spot. To make sure they re out of the four team Playoff is something special.

In the process the Rebels all but ensured the SEC will have at most one team in the playoff. Unless complete chaos reigns everywhere else in college football in which case even Mississippi State could jump back into the mix it s down to Alabama or maybe Missouri (and if Missouri upset the Crimson Tide for the SEC championship there would be great anxiety down South as the brackets are revealed).

Debate the strength of the SEC West all you want just not its depth. The division may not have a great team it could be that the top teams have declined a bit even as the bottom feeders got better. But when Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin described it as the toughest division in the history of mankind he had a point.

All seven teams are bowl eligible. The difference between the division winner (Alabama) and the seventh place team (Arkansas) was literally one point.

There s a bunch of teams Mullen said that are gonna be out there scratching their heads and saying What if over and over. LSU could be scratching their head and they finished 8 4. Arkansas could be scratching their head and they finished last in the West. It s this division.

And Mississippi State which has won 10 regular season games for the first time in school history What ifs there too.

It s a dream season for most people Mullen said but it doesn t even get you the West title.

It won t get them into the playoff either but then Mullen insisted afterward they weren t getting in anyway. With a win and he was assuming an Alabama win in the Iron Bowl too the Bulldogs would have presented an issue for the selection committee Should Mississippi State with only a loss at Alabama have been in the playoff ahead of other one loss teams that were also conference champions But it s no longer a dilemma.

If we had won today there would have been some really interesting conversations that would have shaped the future of the playoff Mullen said. If we had won and not gone to the (SEC) championship game. If we had sat there at 11 1 in the regular season No. 4 winning this game on the road it would have probably shaped (things). If we had made it it would have probably steered the playoffs in the future. If we didn t we probably would have looked at things a lot differently.

Instead the landscape is much different. Wherever the SEC West falls on the spectrum from good to great the division cannibalized itself. Or maybe at least in Oxford a rivalry did what rivalries do.

After a 30 0 loss at Arkansas last week Ole Miss (9 3 5 3 SEC) had fallen all the way to No. 19 in the College Football Playoff Top 25. The Rebels were battered and seemed beaten down.

Wallace nursing an injured right ankle barely practiced this week. The ankle was heavily taped during the game and his mobility was clearly limited and afterward he did interviews wearing a big black walking boot.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze called plays especially in the second half as though the Rebels had nothing to lose. That included a halfback pass for a 31 yard touchdown and a 31 17 lead early in the fourth quarter.

I was willing to throw everything we had at em Freeze said. We had more if we needed it.

Like Mullen Freeze insisted the game was more important than the bigger picture stakes.

It wasn t about us spoiling the year for them as much as reclaiming what we think is ours Freeze said.

Which only means that in both locker rooms denying the possibilities makes the big picture easier to view.
