LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) Walmart workers across Los Angeles were fasting Thursday in a protest for better jobs.
Employees and community leaders began a 24 hour fast at noon outside the Walmart Supercenter in Long Beach.
The fast was representing the hunger Walmart associates and their families endure due to the company s low wages and part time business model.
Hundreds more supporters including shoppers and concerned taxpayers will join for a rally at the end of the fast on Black Friday calling for the mega retailer to pay workers a minimum of $15 an hour and provide consistent full time work.
At total of 1 600 strikes are planned at Walmart stores across the nation.
Walmart brings in $16 billion in annual profits while the majority of employees are paid less than $25 000 a year according to authorities.
