Hollywood's getting a new Joker.

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Oscar winner Jared Leto will star as Batman's arch nemesis in the upcoming action movie Suicide Squad written and directed by David Ayer (Fury). Also signing on to the supervillain centric film scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 5 2016 are Will Smith Tom Hardy Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney.

Based on the DC Comics series Suicide Squad which follows a group of powerful convicts on missions for the government the movie features Hardy as group leader Rick Flagg Smith as the lethal assassin Deadshot Robbie as the Joker's psychotic girlfriend Harley Quinn Courtney as Captain Boomerang and British fashion model Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble under Ayer's amazing guidance give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero said Greg Silverman president for Warner Bros.' Creative Development and Worldwide Production in a statement.

Leto marks the first time an actor has played the Joker on screen since the late Heath Ledger's Oscar winning turn in 2008's The Dark Knight. The rest of the lineup is pulled from the 1980s Suicide Squad comic book that featured Deadshot Rick Flagg Boomerang and Enchantress while the current DC Comics title stars fan favorite femme fatale Harley Quinn.

Suicide Squad which begins filming in Toronto in April is part of the shared DC cinematic universe that began with last year's Man of Steel and continues in 2016's Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice with Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. Zack Snyder the director of both movies is an executive producer on Suicide Squad along with his wife Deborah and DC's chief creative officer Geoff Johns.
