USPS Offering 7 Day Delivery for the Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing which means plenty of shopping. But as more customers order presents from online retailers and send gifts to loved ones the demand for shipping has surged nationwide.

Cindy Jensen the Postmaster in Grand Island said We're expecting a growth in package delivery this year. 470 million during our holiday season in fact.

Last year Fedex and UPS drew criticism for failing to deliver presents on time during the holidays. So the United States Postal Service is stepping up their game with seven day delivery and 29 cities in Nebraska will reap the benefits. Grand Island Hastings and Kearney are some of those cities.

We want to make sure our customers get the gifts and packages that they order on time said Jensen.

Seven day delivery doesn't just make it easier for customers to get their packages on time. It makes things easier for USPS mail carriers too.

Jensen said We won't have to have our carriers out til dark especially on Mondays after we've sat idle one day as the processing plant continues to process seven days a week. So this will cut back our heavy load on Monday.

It will also cut back how long apartment tenants have to wait for packages since USPS can't deliver inside apartment buildings.

USPS could use those extra days give the residents what they need and it's tough at an apartment complex to get it during the week because of jobs and stuff like that so when they're home it's easier if they can do a seven day delivery said Melissa Thompson the property manager at The Sterling Apartments.

Jensen stresses USPS only delivers seven days a week. To mail out letters or packages regular business days and hours apply.
