The world will make much more sense after seeing this illustration. A cartoon posted by XKCD explains the science behind the mind boggling dress color confusion. People are standing by their beliefs of seeing either a black and blue or a white and gold dress and now the illustration simply explains why.

The XKCD cartoon puts the original overexposed image of the dress in the center and adjusts the light on each side. It aims to explain that our brains auto adjust to the color we see based on the amount of light around the dress.

In the cartoon the dress colors are the same on both sides but the backgrounds or rather the lighting are completely different. On the left we have a blue lit room where the dress appears white and gold and then on the right a yellow lit room where the dress appears to be blue and black.

Bottom line is some people s brains perceive the original image to be lit by blue light while others perceive it to be lit by yellow light. So basically we re judging the color of the light we see which allows us to formulate the color of the dress in our minds. We know crazy
