The 99th annual Indianapolis 500 is underway as IndyCar Series drivers compete in what's known as the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. (Go here to get information on how to watch the race.)
The week ahead of the race has been full of drama on the practice track with four drivers involved in violent crashes. And coming into the race there are a number of drivers in the hunt for the win from IndyCar points leader Juan Pablo Montoya to defending champ Ryan Hunter Reay to three time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves.

2 37 p.m. Juan Pablo Montoya wins the 99th Indy 500. He came back from a starting position at 30th and dueled Power and Dixon to come out with the win. A great race

2 30 p.m. Ten laps to go and this is an exciting finish The guys up front are jockeying for position giving it everything they've got. Who will it be
2 28 p.m. We're back from caution and have 15 laps to go. Will Power Scott Dixon and Juan Pablo Montoya look to be the ones to look for as we wind down toward the end.
2 22 p.m. Great Vine video of the crash.
2 19 p.m. It took a while to get Saavedra out of his car but he then had to be carried to the ambulance. Here's hoping he's okay. The other drivers involved in the crash (Hawksworth and Coletti) are okay.

2 11 p.m. That's a BIG ONE Thank goodness those drivers are okay after that one. Some crumpled cars rubber flying.
2 10 p.m. Will Power (best name ever if you didn't know already) is out front. Helio Castroneves in 7th.
2 08 p.m. Pit stops are done so it's a race to the finish (without cautions of course).
2 05 p.m. Scott Dixon now leads with 29 laps to go. Anything could happen.
2 00 p.m. Indeed.

1 55 p.m. Charlie Kimball benefits from the caution and now has the lead for the first time. With 100 laps to go behind him are Dixon Montoya Pagenaud Power Andretti
1 55 p.m. Kanaan talking about who has the best chance to win He says Scott Dixon or Simon Pageneud. Not hard to argue with that.
1 48 p.m. Kanaan had led 30 laps of the today's race. With him out things at the front will change a bit.
1 45 p.m. ANOTHER wreck and caution as Tony Kanaan goes into the wall.
12 55 p.m. A reminder that the crew workers are always in danger. Two pit crew members are involved in an incident both are taken off and one looks like he could have some serious injuries. Updates when we hear more.
12 45 p.m. On lap 112 top five are Pagenaud Kanaan Montoya Dixon Power
11 30 a.m. Wrecks crashed quickly as a Lap 1 incident took contender Sage Karam out of the race.

11 00 a.m. The Indy 500 even for those who aren't race car fans is a true event and an American classic. This year's event looks to be especially exciting with lots of crashes in practice sessions leading up to Sunday.
