Bulldogs face top seeded Kansas State on ESPN3 (8p)
MANHATTAN Kansas A night after stunning second seeded Arkansas the third seeded Bryant University baseball team will face top seed and host Kansas State for a spot in the Manhattan Regional championship game on Saturday night at Tointon Family Stadium.
The Bulldogs (45 16 1) earned the school's first ever NCAA Division I tournament victory on Friday and will now face a Wildcats (42 17) team that scored 20 runs in their opening round victory over Wichita State on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 00 p.m. and can be viewed live on ESPN3.
Bryant and Kansas State have never met prior to this and the Wildcats are just the second team from the Big 12 the Bulldogs have faced since moving to the DI ranks. The Bulldogs will have their hands full with a K State offense that comes in with a team batting average of .326. The Wildcats pounded out 19 hits against seven Wichita State pitchers on Friday scoring at least one run in all but one inning. All American second baseman Ross Kivet went 4 for 5 with two home runs four RBI and four runs scored to pace the Wildcat offense.
On the mound the Bulldogs will see senior left hander Joe Flattery. Pitching in his second year with K State after transferring from Iowa Central Community College Flattery is 4 4 with a 4.02 ERA in 69.1 innings. He's allowed 74 hits walked 17 and struck out 46. Last weekend Flattery tossed 5.1 scoreless innings against Oklahoma scattering three hits and striking out four. The start was the first he's made since April 19 against Oklahoma St.
The Bulldogs on the other hand are coming off one of the most historic days in program school and conference history. Against the preseason No. 1 Razorbacks the Black and Gold picked up 11 hits and broke a 1 1 tie with three runs in the eighth inning. Senior Kevin Brown (Northborough Mass.) broke the 1 1 tie with an RBI single and sophomore John Mullen (Walpole Mass.) followed with a RBI triple to the base of the center field wall. Classmate Carl Anderson (Sudbury Mass.) capped the scoring with an RBI single to left. Brown and Mullen each collected three hits giving Brown 80 on the year. Mullen drove in two runs to hike his RBI total up to 47. In six postseason games sophomore Jordan Mountford (Guelph Ont.) Brown and Mullen have all collected 11 hits. Mountford leads the way with nine runs scored and Mullen has a team high eight RBI in the postseason.
The real story for Bryant on Friday night was its pitching. Led by senior ace Peter Kelich (Jackson N.J.) the Bulldogs limited Arkansas to just three hits on the evening. Kelich didn't allow a hit until a leadoff double in the fifth finishing his afternoon allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out six tying him for the program's single season strikeout record. Classmate Salvatore Lisanti (Bronx N.Y.) did the rest tossing four hitless innings of relief to close the door. He escaped a two on no out jam in the sixth and then induced a game ending 6 3 double play to send the Bulldogs into today's winner's bracket final.
Getting the ball today for the Bulldogs will be junior right hander Craig Schlitter (Guilford Conn.). A Second Team All NEC pitcher this spring Schlitter has been masterful for the Black and Gold. He brings a league best 10 3 record into the contest and has posted a 2.53 ERA in 78.1 innings on the mound. Schlitter has struck out 74 walked just 16 and teams are hitting a measly .202 against him. He has allowed one run or less in each of his last six starts going 6 0 with a 0.70 ERA in 38.1 innings during that stretch. Teams have hit just .158 against him and he has struck out 36 and issued just seven walks.
The winner of Saturday's second game will advance to the regional championship round on Sunday at 8 00 p.m. The loser will face the winner of Arkansas and Wichita State on Sunday at 3 00 p.m.

Mookie Blaylock improves after crash may face charges

JONESBORO Ga. Former NBA All Star Mookie Blaylock one of the best defensive minded guards of his era was upgraded to serious condition after the SUV he was driving Friday crashed and killed a passenger in another car in this Atlanta suburb.
Blaylock had been on life support for several hours after being airlifted from the accident scene but he was off that Saturday morning and sedated following surgery for a broken ankle at Atlanta Medical Center. Friday an Atlanta television report had shown Blaylock his head bloodied being carried on a stretcher at the accident scene.
When Blaylock is in condition to be interviewed by police the former Oklahoma star who played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1992 to 1999 could face vehicular homicide charges in the death of Monica Murphy. The accident happened Friday afternoon on Tara Boulevard a busy four lane highway 17 miles south of Atlanta in Clayton County.
PHOTO Pearl Jam's tribute to Blaylock
Jonesboro police chief Franklin Allen told USA TODAY Sports there will be a discussion next week with the district attorney over charges for Blaylock 46 who apparently lost control of his Cadillac Escalade crossed the center median and collided head on with the vehicle driven by Murphy's husband Frankie who broke an ankle. Allen said he believed Monica Murphy died from internal bleeding.
Blaylock lives on a six acre property near Zebulon Ga. about 30 miles south of the accident scene. Bryan Bennett a brother in law of Blaylock who was at the house Saturday taking care of two of Blaylock's youngest children said doctors operated in the morning on Blaylock's broken ankle.
Blaylock who also played for the New Jersey Nets and Golden State Warriors over a 13 year NBA career was an All Star in 1994 while with the Hawks. The 6 0 guard averaged 13.5 points 6.7 assists and 2.3 steals for his career. He made the NBA's all defensive teams six times in the 1990s.
At Oklahoma Blaylock helped the Sooners to reach the 1988 NCAA title game where they lost to Kansas.
The two oldest of his five children twin sons play football for the University of Kentucky. Blaylock at present does not have a full time job Bennett said but is living comfortably off his savings from his NBA days.

Blaylock also is in line to face charges for driving on a suspended license and failure to maintain control of the vehicle Allen said.
Allen also said there was an outstanding warrant in Spalding County for Blaylock for failure to appear on a DUI and drug charge. There were no indications alcohol or a high rate of speed was a factor in the accident. Allen said Blaylock previously had been under a doctor's care for seizures.
Bennett said Blaylock had one such seizure recently with paramedics called to his home down a winding driveway in rural Pike County. It's a home Bennett's sister and Blaylock have lived in for 13 years.

Will Smith and his son Jaden star in the post apocalyptic thriller After Earth. (Photo Sony/Columbia Pictures)
A world empty of other people might sound pleasant in our over connected over sharing Internet age. No more marketing calls on the cellphone traffic jams or radio call in show blather.
But in After Earth which stars Will Smith the adventure flick vision of the future without other people looks less ideal. Hidden deep in the muscular science fiction film says director M. Night Shyamalan are the lessons of environmental scientists on the impact of people on our planet.
Much of the fun he says in planning the film which opened Friday was trying to contemplate a suitably adventurous world where Smith and his son Jaden play space rangers who crash land on Earth and find that the heavy hand of humanity has been abruptly removed from the planet for a thousand years. Increasing numbers of studies looking from the skies to the ocean depths have documented our impact The stocks of large predatory fish such as tuna swordfish and cod are less 10% of their levels before industrial fishing. On land big cats such as lions numbered in the hundreds of thousands a century ago and today there are less than 35 000 in Africa. In the air at least 10% of bird species are likely to disappear by the end of the century at present rates of population decline.
So what would it mean to have a world without us
The science that is in there nobody will get in the back row Shyamalan says with a laugh. What fascinated him about the movie were environmental studies and books digested in a year of planning the production. I was struck by one biologist's observation that birds would blight the sky without us he says.
There is a line in Moby Dick that always stuck with me about man and nature Shyamalan says. (In Moby Dick author Herman Melville wrote one knows not what sweet mystery about this sea whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul beneath. ) Even though he is best known for suspense films rather than cliff jumping action films he says he saw the sense of biblical judgment in the fury of nature underlying the film. It's a theme he sees in many discussions about the future going on now in society and that is reflected in a sort of hippie/monk future for humanity seen in the film which Shyamalan wrote with star Smith.
We didn't want the Blade Runner future where technology has overrun nature which to some extent is where we are headed now Shyamalan says. Not in a Kumbaya way we wanted a future where people try to use only what they have to survive.
STORY 'After Earth' leaves a bad aftertaste
Underlining the film's themes Jaden Smith stars in a NASA public service announcement released in conjunction with the movie touting NASA's fleet of environment monitoring satellites. So that we never have to leave Smith says in the video unlike the Earth fleeing plot of After Earth.
A lot of writers have tackled these themes of the film perhaps most notably The World Without Us by Alan Weisman which looked at how our homes cities and farms would disintegrate within years and decades without our everyday efforts and James Kunstler's The Long Emergency which pointed to troubles for the suburbs in coming decades. In the movie humanity gets by with no metal and no right angles Shyamalan says.
As always he says the preparation for a movie is best if it remains hidden. Which may be just as well because some of the other science in the movie say geology and evolution are given the Hollywood treatment for dramatic effect.
For example a piece of Africa somehow has mashed into North America's West Coast in a thousand years explaining a cliff jump that goes from redwood forests to tropical jungle in one fell swoop. And whole new species appear to have evolved in that same time period.
One idea we played with is that domesticated animals would become dominant and feral because you start out with so many of them says the director. Feral pigs have done so in just a few decades nationwide for example with more than 5 million roaming from Texas to Wisconsin.
After Earth is a science fiction adventure after all a father and son story that Smith originally pitched to Shyamalan during a happy birthday call. It did teach me a lot about adrenaline where a lot of my films have been focused instead on suspense Shyamalan says suggesting he is more likely to go back to less muscular movies next time.
As soon as you say that be careful I'll probably end up directing Vin Diesel in Fast Furious 7 he jokes. You never know about the future.
4 year old swept away by floodwaters in tornado hit Oklahoma
Historic flooding is now a concern for residents in the greater Oklahoma City area after tornadoes ripped through the area yesterday. NBC's Mark Potter reports from Union City Okla.
A 4 year old girl died after she was swept away by floodwaters fueled by a swarm of destructive twisters that tore through Oklahoma late Friday.
The girl was taking shelter with her family in a ditch when she was got caught in the storm and pulled away Oklahoma City Police Department spokesman Lt. Jay Barnett said.
It is unclear whether the girl is one of the nine people who died as five tornadoes one a half mile wide struck the Oklahoma City area Friday evening terrorizing communities already battered by deadly storms this spring.
Tornadoes rolled like bowling balls through the middle of the country Friday claiming at least nine lives and injuring more than 100 in Oklahoma which is still reeling from the deadly twister last week in Moore. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.
In Missouri authorities said high waters killed three people in Lawrence Miller and Reynolds counties.
The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told NBC News seven adults and two children are confirmed dead including a mother and her small child.
The medical examiner said that five of the nine dead had been positively identified and called on the public's help to identify the others. If someone is missing a loved one from last night s tornado we would encourage them to contact our office at 405 239 7141 said Amy Elliott of the medical examiner's office.
Hospitals in Oklahoma City reported 104 injuries including five critical patients.
At least five people killed were in vehicles and may have been trying to flee as dark clouds gathered and warning sirens wailed authorities said.
Marcus Jolly 32 of El Reno told The Oklahoman newspaper the scene along Interstate 40 was a war zone. There were semis turned over and skeletons of buildings remaining.
Oklahoma resident Garrett Occhipinti speaks with MSNBC via phone about a photo he took of the storm that showed massive wall clouds stretching for over a mile.
The twisters came just 11 days after a monster tornado left 24 dead in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore where power outages were reported Friday.
Mark Wiley meteorologist at the National Weather Service s southern region headquarters in Fort Worth said early Saturday that there had been five confirmed tornadoes in the Oklahoma City area on Friday and one in the Tulsa area early Saturday.
A total of 12 tornadoes hit Missouri and Illinois around St. Louis where numerous homes were damaged. Wiley did not have any information about casualties there. Two twisters touched down briefly in North Dakota but did not do any damage.
The Oklahoma City area definitely experienced the worst of the bad weather Wiley said with wind gusts of up to 90 mph baseball sized hail and extensive flooding.
We have several reports of water going into homes and dozens of people having to be rescued on the streets especially along Interstate 40 Wiley said. It was not a good night to be in the Oklahoma City area.
For Saturday Wiley said the storm was moving toward Arkansas Kentucky Tennessee and East Texas but did not look as severe as yesterday.
There was still a threat of large hail damaging winds and flooding but the tornado threat is lower today than it was yesterday he said. The threat of a large tornado was very small he added.

The worry now turns to flash flooding. Wiley said about 6 to 8 inches of rain had fallen in 12 hours between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. CT Saturday. The Weather Channel reported that May 2013 is the wettest May on record in Oklahoma City.
Friday the terror came from tornadoes boasting baseball sized hail and winds so strong they tossed tractor trailers off the interstate. Meteorologists said the storm's fury didn't match that of the tornado that struck Moore on May 20 but dumped around 8 inches of rain on the area.
An SUV used by Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Bettes and a crew of storm trackers was thrown 200 yards by one tornado near Oklahoma City suburb El Reno. The vehicle tumbled about eight times and came to rest in a field Bettes said. Some members of the crew suffered minor injuries and the vehicle was destroyed.
That was the scariest moment of my life Bettes said. I saw my life flash before my eyes.
4Warn Storm Team meteorologist Emily Sutton and 4Warn Storm Team storm chaser Kevin Josefy also had a close call with a tornado near El Reno broadcasting live as they fled.
Later Sutton told NBC station KFOR of Oklahoma City that they were driving near the twister when it started to turn.
All of a sudden we felt the wind behind us picking up picking up she said.
She said chunks of trees began falling in front of our eyes. I felt stuff hitting my back and I knew that's not right ... all I did was just say 'Oh my God ' and then we just kept our composure because you've got to keep moving on.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph said the woman and baby were killed when the SUV they were in overturned on Interstate 40 between El Reno and Yukon.
Many of the injured were hurt in accidents along Interstates 35 and 40 west of the city where at least three semi trailer rigs were overturned after the biggest tornado touched down near El Reno authorities said.
Bart Kuester 50 a truck driver from Wisconsin said he was driving along Interstate 35 past Moore when he realized a dangerous storm was approaching.
I heard the sirens going off and I could see it coming he told The Associated Press. Kuester said the interstate was flooded and jammed with people trying to outrun the storm.
Everyone was leaving. ... Just because that one that hit Moore was so fresh in their memory he said.
Authorities said some of the worst damage on Friday was from flooding around El Reno and Yukon and the danger continued into Saturday.
The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of Oklahoma early Saturday.
At 2 21 a.m. CDT National Weather Service radar and rain gauges indicated over six inches of rain has fallen across parts of Oklahoma and Canadian counties. Additional storms will move across these counties through the early morning with additional 1 to 2 inches of rain possible. Life threatening flooding is already occurring and will continue for the next several hours the weather service said.
There were also flash flood warnings in place for parts of Iowa Illinois Indiana Missouri Arkansas and Kansas.
On Friday one tornado turned south from Oklahoma City and then toward the suburb of Moore which was hit by a devastating twister on May 20 that killed 24 people and injured hundreds of others.
I think we are still a little shaken by what happened in Moore. We are still burying children and victims so our emotions are still strong Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett told Reuters.
Dylan Dreyer MSNBC meteorologist updates Rachel Maddow with the latest details of tornadic storms sweeping across the Oklahoma City area.
More than 91 000 customers were without power in the metro area at midday according to the OG E power company including bout 12 000 customers in Moore.
Power company Ameren said there were 87 000 outages in Missouri and 30 000 in Illinois.
Gov. Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency.
This has been a very large storm that hit a lot of communities she told KFOR. She said she had heard from at least 30 fellow governors offering assistance.
At Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City where winds hit 71 mph all flights were canceled and about 1 000 travelers were herded underground where they were told to put their hands on their heads. The airport reopened Saturday morning but all morning departures were canceled.
Tornado warnings meaning a funnel cloud that could become a tornado had been spotted in the area were in effect much of the day for numerous counties in Oklahoma Missouri Illinois and Wisconsin.
Forecasters sounded the alarm that much of the Midwest already pummeled by a week of tornadoes and flooded with drenching rains was facing another round of violent weather overnight and into the weekend.
Observers at Tinker Air Force Base reported a tornado on the ground near the base southwest of Oklahoma City. In Norman home to the University of Oklahoma a tornado touched down near Norman North High School and Norman Regional Hospital.
Buildings at Lambert St. Louis International Airport were damaged by tornadoes with debris strewn across the runway. The airport was closed because of the damage but re opened just before midnight the airport said in a statement.
Another tornado touched down Friday night 7 miles northeast of Moscow Mills Mo. about 50 miles northwest of St. Louis. In St. Charles County 24 houses were severely damaged or destroyed said Mike O'Connell communications director for the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
The National Weather Service evacuated its St. Louis office as tornado warnings were issued for north and northeastern St. Louis and surrounding counties.
Severe thunderstorm warnings meanwhile stretched from Minnesota and Michigan south to Arkansas. Forecasters said storms overnight could bring several more intense tornadoes hail up to 4 inches in diameter and wind gusts approaching 80 mph.

4 Firefighters Killed in Houston Fire Mourned
Anne Sullivan was a gifted athlete filled with energy who came out of high school with a focus on being a firefighter. But about a month after graduating from the Houston Fire Department Academy the 24 year old was among four firefighters who died while searching for people they thought might be trapped in a blazing Houston motel and restaurant.
She had a lot of energy and had her heart set at that her father Jack Sullivan told The Associated Press on Saturday.
Also killed in the collapse during the Friday afternoon fire at the Southwest Inn were Capt. Matthew Renaud 35 who had been with department for 11 years Engineer Operator Robert Bebee 41 who joined the department almost 12 years ago and Firefighter Robert Garner 29 who joined the department 2 years ago.
The Houston Fire Department said 14 firefighters were taken to the hospital Friday. One remained in critical condition on Saturday and another underwent surgery. The rest were in stable condition and several have been released from the hospital.
The fire broke out just after noon at a restaurant connected to the Southwest Inn along a busy freeway and quickly spread to the section of the building housing the motel. About 150 firefighters responded and were able to get it under control within about two hours.
The fire was the deadliest in the 118 year history of the department.
Fire Capt. Ruy Lozano said at a news conference Saturday that firefighters were turning to each other and their families as they grieved their colleagues.
Anytime one of your brothers or sisters are affected it's not just that it's also a reminder of the inherent danger of this profession. It reminds you. It reminds your family said Lozano who also said that a memorial for the firefighters is tentatively set for Wednesday.
Fire officials said they took a high risk in aggressively fighting the fire because they believed people were inside the motel. When a portion of the building collapsed the firefighters were trapped.
It was an occupied structure during business hours. There was every indication to think there was a life to be saved Lozano said.
Anne Sullivan a soccer player and cross country runner in high school joined the Wharton County Junior College Fire Academy after graduation. She graduated from the Houston Fire Department Academy in April.
Jack Sullivan said he was on his way home from work Friday when he heard about the fire and realized it was in his daughter's area.
I'm thinking she could be involved but maybe not he said.
About 10 minutes later he heard that four firefighters had died in the blaze and began crying in his car. As he approached his house he saw an emergency vehicle parked outside and knew his daughter was among those who had died.
I knew right that instant Sullivan said.
He said that while he'd tried to sway his daughter into a less dangerous line of work such as an EMT he knew that her heart was set on being a firefighter. At 5 foot 2 she had the grit and determination to realize her dream he said.
There was no stopping her Sullivan said.
Jerry Veuleman who raised Garner since he was 14 years old told the Houston Chronicle that Garner was proud of his work and had set his sights on becoming a firefighter after leaving the military.
'Use your training. Don't be a hero. God will look after you ' Veuleman recalled telling him. God chose it was time to take Robert and the other firefighters. We are sorry but we are also blessed.
The Houston Fire Department Arson Division is taking the lead in the investigation of the fire with assistance from the State Fire Marshal's Office the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives and the Houston Police Department.
Police Retreat in Istanbul as Protests Expand Through Turkey
By late afternoon the police withdrew from Istanbul s central Taksim Square allowing the demonstrators to gather unimpeded in the place that set off the protests last week with government plans to turn a park into a replica Ottoman era army barracks and mall. The departure of the police who had been widely criticized for violent tactics on Friday set off scenes of jubilation and destruction as some drank and partied while others destroyed police vehicles and bulldozers.
While the protest began over plans to destroy a park for many demonstrators it had moved beyond that to become a broad rebuke to the 10 year leadership of Mr. Erdogan and his government which they say has adopted authoritarian tactics. Some saw the police pullback as a historic victory. It s the first time in Turkey s democratic history that an unplanned peaceful protest movement succeeded in changing the government s approach and policy said Sinan Ulgen the chairman of the Center for Economic and Foreign Policy Studies a research group in Istanbul. It gave for the first time a strong sense of empowerment to ordinary citizens to demonstrate and further their belief that if they act like they did the last few days they can influence events in Turkey.
Still it was far from clear on Saturday whether they could capitalize on that success. The Islamist rooted government retains wide support among religious conservatives and Mr. Erdogan insisted Saturday that the redevelopment of the square would continue as planned.
By nightfall as the crowds in Taksim Square grew rowdier a sense of foreboding crept in as many worried that the police would return. In the Besiktas neighborhood the police were still firing tear gas and protesters were erecting barricades in the streets.
The Interior Ministry said it had arrested 939 people at demonstrations across the country and that 79 people were wounded a number that was probably low. After Friday s protests which were smaller and less violent than those on Saturday a Turkish doctors group reported nearly 1 000 injuries.
The scenes carried the symbolic weight of specific grievances people held beers in the air a rebuke to the recently passed law banning alcohol in public spaces young men smashed the windshields of the bulldozers that had begun razing Taksim Square and a red flag bearing the face of modern Turkey s secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was draped over a destroyed police vehicle.
But despite the comparisons made in some quarters with the street chaos of Egypt s revolution no viable political opposition here seems capable of seizing the disenchantment of secular minded Turks and molding it in to a cohesive movement.
The government in its response to the crisis sent mixed messages. Mr. Erdogan in a televised speech on Saturday morning vowed to go forward with the plan to remake the park in Taksim Square while other members of his Justice and Development Party including a deputy prime minister and the mayor of Istanbul promised to listen to the concerns of citizens.
The widening chaos here and the images it produced threaten to tarnish Turkey s image which Mr. Erdogan has carefully cultivated as a regional power broker with the ability to shape the outcome of the Arab Spring revolutions by presenting itself as a model for the melding of Islam and democracy.
Now Turkey is facing its own civil unrest and the protesters presented a long list of grievances against Mr. Erdogan including opposition to his policy of supporting Syria s rebels against the government of President Bashar al Assad his crackdown on dissent and intimidation of the news media and unchecked development in Istanbul.
Ceylan Yeginsu and Sebnem Arsu contributed reporting from Istanbul.

The Voice goes country again Why last nights eliminations could be the ...

After last night The Voice is officially on it s way to the Top 6 and quickly falling into the all too familiar pattern of last season. With the shocking elimination of Team Adam s Sarah Simmons and Judith Hill both of whom my colleague Adam Carlson and I had pegged for the final four America has once again sided with Team Blake. Deja vu anyone
Here s how the pattern played out last season Adam s powerhouse vocalist Amanda Brown peaked too early and instead America became infatuated with the everyday listenings of Team Blake s rocker turned country artist Cassadee Pope who would go on to win the entire show. That s not to say that Pope wasn t talented but with the choice of 1) a Team Blake artist and 2) Pope s rock country we ve heard it before radio voice (as opposed to someone like CeeLo s Nicholas David) the feel of The Voice shifted.
A year later we find ourselves in a similar position with America choosing all three of Blake s country acts (some more talented than others) over two of Adam s three powerhouse vocalists. So with three of the top six singers being country artists at this point in season 4 the country influence seems to have grown from last season so much so that the show could be well on its way to becoming The Country Voice.
What brought about this pattern which really only began during season 3 In my opinion all signs point to the addition of using iTunes to vote for singers. iTunes added an advantage for never before heard songs (aka a lot of country) because audiences are much more likely to buy a song that s brand new to them rather than add yet another cover of a song they already have two versions of on their iPod (the original version and the Glee version obviously). Also if audiences haven t heard the original they re much less harsh in their judgment of the contestant s version.
The prominent role of iTunes which can usually be used to predict elimination outcomes also points to The Voice s core audience. My parents aren t exactly jumping on their computer to update their iPod after every episode. We re looking at young people who love to pull for the younger contestants and who seem to have fallen in love with both Blake as a coach and country music as a whole. First up Blake s charming he s funny and he loves his contestants. So does having Blake as a coach give contestants an immediate advantage It s possible. Does singing country give contestants an immediate advantage It s also possible. Blake always mentions how very loyal country music fans are. And perhaps the fact that there aren t any high profile country music singing competitions has brought people to The Voice. After all who s a better face for country music than the handsome Blake Shelton
More importantly if this pattern becomes routine it could easily be the downfall of the show. If each year America becomes infatuated with Blake and his country roots therefore siding with his talented country artists over some of the most original voices in the competition much like this season s Sarah Simmons and Judith Hill the show could be at risk of becoming predictable which is the kiss of death for any reality show (or any show really). Is Danielle Bradbery not this year s Cassadee Pope
Will you keep watching if Blake wins yet again with yet another country artist Do you agree that Blake being so lovable plays into how successful his contestants are (all talent aside) Is The Voice becoming a country music competition

Did player mutiny lead to Rangers firing John Tortorella

More NHL Playoffs Scores TV Schedule Expert Picks Odds Mock Draft Rumors
When asked what the reason why John Tortorella was fired as coach of the New York Rangers GM Glen Sather didn't say much other than to say there wasn't any one particular thing. That's because he couldn't say the players told him to.
If there is any truth to the abundance of rumors circulating the day after the gruff coach was given the boot on Broadway that seems to be what most precipitated the decision. One of those rumors/reports comes from Larry Brooks of the New York Post saying things changed dramatically when Sather had his exit interviews with the players.
The Rangers players had had enough of the coach and they said so during their exit meetings on Monday. Sources have confirmed Sather had no intention of dismissing Tortorella in the wake of the team's second round elimination by the Bruins until a critical mass of players informed the GM that the coach's overbearing personality had become a roadblock to success.
When Henrik Lundqvist told the press Monday he would need time to think about committing his future to the Rangers that was the tip of the iceberg. The franchise goaltender did not sing an executioner's song but we've learned that he was troubled enough by what had become a deteriorating dynamic between the coach and his teammates that he believed it was necessary to give voice to it.
We're told that though there were no ultimatums issued by the players the overwhelming sentiment was that Tortorella had become the problem rather than the solution for the Rangers who are now going on 20 years and 19 seasons since their last Stanley Cup in 1994.
Before you go thinking that this is just coming from some kind of ax that Brooks has to grind with Tortorella two guys who had some verbal sparring matches over the years it was pretty much echoed by Pat Leonard of New York's Daily News. Not to mention Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada tweeted very soon after the firing that Lundqvist's comments changed everything.
There is plenty of smoke to see the fire here.
Torts firedTortorella not the only problem in New York
Everybody sees the Tortorella in the media who is occasionally pleasant but most often surly and blunt. He apparently is pretty much the same guy behind the closed doors because the act definitely seems to have worn thin. Sather referred to coaches all having shelf lives in his comments on Wednesday and that's certainly true for a guy like Tortorella who is so demanding and rough around the edges. That eventually can get tiresome for the players.
Just to add a little more credence to the idea of Tortorella not being every player's favorite coach here is a sampling of a few of his former players' thoughts after he was fired. That would be Marian Gaborik who was treated like a scapegoat under Tortorella until he was traded to Columbus and Matthew Barnaby who played for him with Tampa Bay.
Everything happens for a reason...
Marian Gaborik ( MGaborik10) May 29 2013Torts is awful to play for. A good guy away from the rink but NO fun at all to be around. Very smart hockey guy but I played for him and ugh
Matthew Barnaby ( MattBarnaby3636) May 29 2013The players' pushing for Tortorella's exit would seem to obviously be more than just the tip of the iceberg here but it is also a move that probably isn't made if the Rangers had found a little more success. But when you have a near mutiny on your hands you have little choice if you're Sather than to make Tortorella walk the plank.
