Jim Kelly Dead Actor And Martial Artist Best Known For Enter The Dragon ...

SAN DIEGO Actor Jim Kelly who played a glib American martial artist in Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee has died. He was 67.

Marilyn Dishman Kelly's ex wife said he died Saturday of cancer at his home in San Diego.

Sporting an Afro hairstyle and sideburns Kelly made a splash with his one liners and fight scenes in the 1973 martial arts classic. His later films included Three the Hard Way Black Belt Jones and Black Samurai.

During a 2010 interview with salon.com Kelly said he started studying martial arts in 1964 in Kentucky and later moved to California where he earned a black belt in karate. He said he set his sights on becoming an actor after winning karate tournaments. He also played college football.

The role in the Bruce Lee film was his second. He had about a dozen film roles in the 1970s before his acting work tapered off. In recent years he drew lines of autograph seekers at comic book conventions.

It was one of the best experiences in my life he told salon.com of working on Enter the Dragon. Bruce was just incredible absolutely fantastic. I learned so much from working with him. I probably enjoyed working with Bruce more than anyone else I'd ever worked with in movies because we were both martial artists. And he was a great great martial artist. It was very good.

Confederation Cup Protests Target Match In Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO More than 5 000 anti government protesters marched Sunday near the Maracana stadium before a major international soccer match venting their anger about the billions of dollars the Brazilian government is spending on major sporting events rather than public services.

Sharp clashes broke out several hundred yards (meters) away from the stadium about 30 minutes before the game began as a minor scuffle between police and a few protesters escalated.

Officers quickly quashed the unrest unleashing a barrage of tear gas canisters and stun grenades scattering the crowd but not before some protesters retaliated with Molotov cocktails and powerful fireworks. At one point an officer ran into a nearby gas station and told several people holed up inside they needed to get out or they were all going to die here

Though smaller in size the march was the latest in a wave of protests that has spread across this continent sized country in recent weeks. Many are calling the protest movement the biggest seen here in decades with more than 1 million people having taken to the streets nationwide on just the night of June 20.

The demonstrations have dwindled in size and frequency in recent days as officials from all levels of government have scrambled to calm public anger with woeful public services and a heavy tax burden.

Still the atmosphere was tense outside Maracana on Sunday. Some clusters of protesters tried to break through the security perimeter police set up around the stadium but were pushed back and not able to get past authorities.

Despite the smaller protests demonstrator Eliane Milazzo a 54 year old high school teacher marching with her daughter and son in law said the Brazilian people won't let their leaders off the hook and that the protests will go on.

They've got to continue because the reasons people are out on the street are not going to go away overnight she said. I know I will continue to go to the streets and so will my family until we see real changes in our everyday lives.

President Dilma Rousseff has suffered the brunt of the political damage. The first national poll conducted after the protests ignited showed a steep drop in her approval rating and throws in doubt what had seemed an easy re election next year.

Rousseff decided to not attend Sunday's final match of the Confederations Cup football tournament which pits Brazil against Spain in what's seen as a warm up for next year's World Cup to be hosted in Brazil.

Other top government officials and even football legend Pele are also skipping the match in a major embarrassment for a government that had hoped to use the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio to showcase Brazil's arrival as a global power.

People are angry with Congress angry with the terrible hospitals and worse schools said Tania Nobrega a 56 year old psychologist protesting near Maracana in Rio. But they don't want Dilma's head. People are sick of the status quo here and that means they're fed up not only with the (ruling Workers Party) but also with all parties.

The demonstrations began earlier this month over a 10 cent hike in bus and subway fare in Sao Paulo before morphing into a nationwide movement denouncing a range of problems such as government corruption poor education and health care.

The sudden outrage has bewildered the country's political class which took several days to find their footing and respond to the demonstrations both with words and action.

Several city and state governments reversed the hike on public transportation fares that sparked the first protests but the demonstrators had moved well beyond that issue.

On June 21 Rousseff delivered a prerecorded prime time speech on TV that did little to calm the protests. She then convened a June 24 meeting with protest leaders and all the governors and mayors of capital cities in which she announced $23 billion in new transportation investments. She also said she would import foreign doctors to work in underserved areas while promising a five point plan to focus on public services and corruption.

The president is expected to deliver to Congress early this week her proposal for a national plebiscite letting citizens vote on political reforms.

The protests have mostly died down since the proposals were made.

The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported Sunday that 490 protests had taken place in Brazil in the last three weeks peaking at 150 on June 20 when violent clashes between protesters and police were seen in several cities.

Many demonstrators have said they had learned their mass actions could prompt a quick government response. They also said they anticipated other high profile events they could use to speak out including July's visit by Pope Francis next year's World Cup a presidential election a few months later and the Rio Olympics three years from now.

I don't think the demonstrations will stop people from coming to the World Cup but I hope they don't come said Tatiana Poggi a history professor at Sunday's protest near Maracana. It's a way foreigners help us protest. Boycott the big event.

Brazilian officials were doing all they could to make sure Sunday's protests didn't interrupt the finals match which would be watched by millions around the world.

Officials were mobilizing the biggest security operation yet seen for a football game in Brazil with about 6 000 regular police and almost 500 police investigators patrolling the area around Maracana and a large contingent of elite federal troops also on patrol.

No clashes between protesters and police were reported a few hours before the match was set to begin but demonstrators remained fierce in their anti government chants.

Here in Brazil we took too long to wake up to discover they spent billions on stadiums but they say there's no money for hospitals no supplies for doctors said protester Mariela Simao. They tried to take action to show the population they are doing something but they could do more.

BART strike to paralyze San Francisco commute

(CNN) Public transit in San Francisco came to a screeching halt Monday morning as Bay Area Rapid Transit unions went on strike.

The strike began at midnight (3 a.m. ET) Monday after union leaders walked out of last minute pay negotiations with BART hours before their four year contract was set to expire.

About 400 000 commuters use BART every day in the San Francisco Bay area BART spokesman Rick Rice said.

The public doesn't deserve to be punished Rice said. We are sorry they have decided to strike despite the fact we are willing to negotiate. The district is prepared to return to talks and get this finished.

Josie Mooney spokeswoman for SEIU Local 1021 also lamented the impact on the community.

A strike is always the last resort and we have done everything in our power to avoid it. Unfortunately BART seems intent on forcing a strike Mooney said in a statement. We are disappointed that BART's failure to bargain honestly and fairly means that hundreds of thousands of Bay Area commuters have to suffer.

At odds

The dispute centers around pay and benefits.

They've asked for (a) 21% pay increase Rice said. We've gone from offering 4% over four years to 8% over four years.

Rice also said BART also offered to reduce the amount of employee contributions originally requested for pension and medical benefits.

But local SEIU union President Roxanne Sanchez said workers are fed up.

Years of layoffs have affected public safety and services. Crippling cuts have not just made our jobs more difficult but put undue strain on our livelihoods our families and our communities she said in a statement.

Believing in good jobs that pay fair wages offer health care and a secure retirement these are modest ideals. These are UNION ideals.

CNN's John Branch contributed to this report.

Brazil Violence Mars Confederations Cup Final

Molotov cocktails were hurled at police as violence broke out before the Confederations Cup final match in Brazil.

Police responded by firing tear gas and shock grenades at the crowd as the protests turned violent.

One protester who did not give her name described the police response as an embarrassment to Brazil.

Protesters at a security line near the entry to Maracana Stadium

You can't do anything. You can't protest. You know why Because our government has no shame the protester said.

More than 5 000 demonstrators marched near the Maracana stadium where Brazil defeated Spain 3 0 in the Confederations Cup final.

They vented their anger about the billions of dollars the Brazilian government is spending on major sporting events rather than on public services.

Federal police in riot gear stand guard outside the stadium

We are here protesting for a greater investment in health and education for people to have their citizen's rights and not only football beer and samba said Juliana Silva one of the protesters.

Though smaller in size the march was the latest in a wave of protests that has spread across the country in recent weeks.

Many are calling the protest movement the biggest seen in Brazil in decades with more than one million people having taken to the streets nationwide on the night of June 20.

The protests triggered a fall in President Dilma Rousseff's approval rating

The demonstrations have dwindled in size and frequency in recent days as officials from all levels of government have scrambled to calm public anger with poor public services and a heavy tax burden.

The first national poll conducted after the protests ignited showed a steep drop in President Dilma Rousseff's approval rating and throws in doubt what had seemed an easy re election next year.

Box office update Monsters University and The Heat crush White House ...

Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock proved they were an appealing comedic duo on Friday but they couldn t outpace the animated pairing of Mike and Sully at the box office.

Monsters University topped the chart with $14.3 million yesterday putting the Pixar sequel on track for an excellent $49 million second weekend. That would give the family film a $175 million total after ten days a healthy total as it prepares to take on Despicable Me 2 next weekend.

In second place The Heat scored an excellent $13.6 million which easily trumps McCarthy s last two starring efforts Bridesmaids which opened with $7.8 million on a Friday and Identity Thief which began with $11.1 million on a Friday. The Heat may take in about $39 million this weekend which would not only be a fantastic start considering its $43 million budget but also a career best opening for both Bullock and McCarthy.

In such a competitive marketplace White House Down got off to a very discouraging start. Since its debut at 7 p.m. on Thursday the $150 million Channing Tatum/Jamie Foxx action film has earned only $9 million and it may have to settle for a sad $25 million opening weekend. That would be just half of the $50.2 million that Roland Emmerich s other White House destruction film Independence Day garnered on its opening weekend in 1996. It would also be a big step below the $30.4 million debut of Olympus Has Fallen this year s remarkably similar White House action film which ultimately grossed $98.7 million against a $70 million budget.

World War Z held in fourth place with $8.9 million and it will almost certainly pass White House Down by Sunday. The ultra expensive Brad Pitt zombie thriller is headed to a $31 million weekend gross which would yield a $124 million total after two frames.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Man of Steel which fell by 52 percent from last Friday (a much kinder drop than the 72 percent Friday to Friday plunge one week ago) to $6 million which puts it on pace for a $21 million weekend.

1. Monsters University $14.3 million 2. The Heat $13.6 million 3. White House Down $9.0 million 4. World War Z $8.9 million 5. Man of Steel $6.0 million

2013 Tour de France Bakelants wins 2nd stage

Jan Bakelants of Belgium crosses the finish line to win the second stage of the Tour de France.(Photo Laurent Rebours AP)

AJACCIO Corsica (AP) Belgian rider Jan Bakelants pulled away close to the finish line to win Sunday's second stage of the Tour de France and take the race leader's yellow jersey for the first time in his career.

Bakelants made his move with a few hundred meters remaining and the RadioShack rider did enough to withstand a late charge from Slovak sprinter Peter Sagan.

It's difficult to believe what happened today it's fantastic said Bakelants who had a knee operation earlier this year. Today it may be the first and last time I ever wear the yellow jersey.

German sprinter Marcel Kittel started the day in the lead after winning Saturday's crash marred first stage but the rolling hills took their toll and he finished nearly 18 minutes behind in 169th spot.

Last SlideNext Slide

It's a difficult stage and I'm a sprinter that's why I suffer said Kettel who retained the sprinter's green jersey. I had goose bumps when I went up the hill. So many people were screaming my name. But we were expecting to lose it (the yellow jersey).

The 156 kilometer (97 mile) trek started from Bastia and after four moderate climbs finished in Ajaccio where French emperor and military mastermind Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769.

The day's last climb up Cote du Salario was much shorter than the other ones but far steeper.

By the time the pack reached the foot of it Kittel and British sprinter Cavendish were among a small band of strugglers drifting further and further away.

Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha and Cyrille Gautier attacked up the final ascent and Tour favorite Chris Froome then launched a surprise attack to go after Gautier when the Frenchman pulled away. But Froome's attack fizzled out and the main pack swallowed him up.

The day after more than a dozen riders crashed a small white dog ran out into the road some 4 kilometers (2. 5 miles from the line) and a potentially dangerous situation was narrowly avoided by a matter of seconds.

A bystander started to run after the dog and then changed his mind and the dog just managed to reach the other side of the road before the marauding pack passed through.

Monday's third stage is the last of the Corsican trio and is again hilly with four moderate climbs dotted along the 145.5 kilometer (90 mile) route from Ajaccio to Calvi.

Knicks close in on Andrea Bargnani

Bargnani On The Move

The New York Knicks are close to finalizing a trade for power forward Andrea Bargnani which would send Steve Novak and Marcus Camby to the Toronto Raptors a league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

Sources say in order to make the trade work the Knicks are going to have to sign and trade at least one player into the trade to make it work after July 10 when the league's annual moratorium is lifted. It has to be a player the Knicks had at the end of the season.

Earl Barron and Quentin Richardson are possibilities according to sources.

More from ESPNNewYork.com

The Knicks have a deal in place to acquire power forward Andrea Bargnani from the Raptors writes Jared Zwerling. Reax

Kenyon Martin however is not going to sign off on being signed and traded to Toronto sources say.

Camby's agent Rick Kaplan is on the record as saying of the trade It's going to happen.

The New York Times earlier reported the development and the newspaper also mentioned the trade would involve the Knicks giving up their first round pick in 2016.

It's worth noting that Bargnani is represented by Leon Rose whose clients include the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

In addition Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald is the former GM of the Raptors the team that drafted Camby with the second overall pick in 1996.

Camby however did not sound enthused about potentially heading back to Toronto.

It's unfortunate that I wasn't given a meaningful opportunity to contribute last season in New York. I was really looking forward to the upcoming year as a chance to show the organization what they missed out on last year and pushing our team towards the Finals he said in a statement through his agent.

I have nothing but positive things to say about the city of Toronto and its great fans having been drafted by the Raptors 17 years ago. Given that my goal at this point in my career is to have a shot at a championship however I'll have to evaluate my options going forward. I've enjoyed a great career and under the right circumstances I hope to continue making an impact in the league.

Camby and Novak's salaries total about $8.7 million for next season.

Bargnani 27 is due to make $23 million in the next two seasons. If the trade goes through he'll also receive a $500 000 bonus as part of a trade kicker. Financially the situation makes the potential trade a bit of a head scratcher as the Knicks are already over the luxury tax threshold. In addition Bargnani the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft has missed 98 games in the past two seasons due to injuries. Last season he had to shut it down in early March because of an avulsion sprain in his right elbow.

Looking for more Knicks news ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

However Bargnani's expiring contract heading into the 2014 15 season will give the Knicks some cap flexibility in 2015 when also Anthony Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler's salaries all come off the books.

Trading for Bargnani is also viewed as potential insurance if Smith decides to bolt in free agency. A few teams including the Detroit Pistons Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns are preparing to make higher offers than the Knicks to sign the Sixth Man Award winner. The Knicks can only offer $5.58 million with early Bird rights but they still feel like they have the upper hand. In fact Smith has agreed along with his family to first meet with Knicks coach Mike Woodson and the team's front office on Sunday night to discuss his future in New York.

If Bargnani joins the Knicks they'll be hoping that he and Stoudemire are able to get back on track in the health department. It's unclear at this point how Bargnani's role would affect Stoudemire's but one could start at power forward and the other could be the backup.

If the overall situation doesn't work out the Knicks will look bad again for giving away more draft picks which would prevent their future building. But the Bargnani move would represent the Knicks' focus to win a championship by 2015 and the pressure is further on with the Brooklyn Nets their Atlantic Division rival upgrading with Kevin Garnett Paul Pierce and Jason Terry.

Another league source said that the Knicks could also pursue point guard Aaron Brooks who was recently waived by the Houston Rockets. Rose who represents Brooks told ESPNNewYork.com earlier this month that Brooks would be a good fit in New York with his transition game and 3 point shooting two keys in the Knicks' offense looking ahead to next season.

The Knicks have been interested in Brooks in the past and they need to secure a backup point guard this offseason. They would like to re sign Pablo Prigioni but they have no assurances from him yet that he'll return to New York or head back to Spain where he played professionally for many years.

Jared Zwerling is a regular contributor to ESPNNewYork.com. Information from ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Brian Windhorst contributed to this report.

A billboard promotes the Cirque Du Soleil show ''KA'' along the side of the MGM Grand Hotel Casino on August 12 2011 in Las Vegas Nevada.

A Cirque du Soleil performer died Saturday after an accident during a performance of the show Ka at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas authorities announced Sunday.

Sarah Guyard Guillot 31 was pronounced dead shortly before midnight Saturday according to the Clark County Coroner's Office. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Audience members told the Las Vegas Sun that a performer suspended by a wire in the show s final scene dropped a distance of nearly 50 feet into a pit below the stage.

Initially a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the choreographed fight. But you could hear screaming then groaning and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage Dan Mosqueda who was attending the show with his family told the Sun.

The newspaper also reported that Guyard Guillot was a mother of two young children and had spent 22 years as an acrobatic performer.

I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devasted with this news.
