Princess Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan
On the heels of the celebrated birth of Prince William's first child Vanity Fair is remembering his mother Princess Diana who died in a tragic car crash in 1997 at the age of 36.
Britain's young new Prince George of Cambridge may never meet his paternal grandmother but as her story prepares to go to the big screen in Diana this fall the magazine presents a new account of the princess' love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan in the last years before her death.
Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan and wanted to marry him even if that meant living in Pakistan said Jemima Khan a friend to the princess of no relation to the surgeon.

And that's one of the reasons why we became friends.
The Princess of Wales reportedly spent a lot of time trying to get to know members of the Khan family with the intent to quietly marry into it which was not entirely acceptable.

Hasnat was a decent intensely private man from a traditional conservative Pakistani family and he was worried about how it would work Jemima Khan added.
And he hated the thought of being in the glare of publicity for the rest of his life.

Today s Google Doodle honors Maria Mitchell (Aug. 1 1818 Jun. 28 1889) the first professional woman astronomer in the U.S. and the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Born to a Quaker family on Nantucket she grew up stargazing with her father s telescope. On October 1 1847 while working as a librarian at the Nantucket Atheneum she discovered a new comet which became known as Miss Mitchell s Comet. King Frederick VI of Denmark sent her a medal in honor of her discovery.
In 1865 she became the first astronomy professor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie New York where she ran the school s observatory and woke students up in the middle of the night to study Saturn and Jupiter. A staunch proponent of the anti slavery movement during the Civil War she also used the observatory to host salons that discussed current events in politics and feminism and to host dome parties where everyone would sit around and write poetry on scraps of paper. We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics nor all logic but is somewhat beauty and poetry she once said according to the National Women s History Museum.
In 1873 she helped establish the Association for the Advancement of Women and ran it for a few years afterwards. There s even a crater on the Moon named after her Mitchell s Crater.
Other prominent women who have been honored with Google Doodles this year include biophysicist Rosalind Franklin jazz musician Ella Fitzgerald and the first African singer to win a Grammy Miriam Mama Africa Makeba.

Riley Cooper still earning Eagles teammates trust after slur
PHILADELPHIA Receiver Riley Cooper spent much of Thursday's practice standing alone isolated from teammates when he wasn't participating in first team repetitions. He has learned acceptance won't come easily from everyone in the Philadelphia Eagles' locker room starting with Cary Williams.
Cooper who has apologized after being caught on video using a racial slur in an argument with an African American security guard at a June concert has been fined an undisclosed amount by the team and ordered by the organization to undergo sensitivity training.
He apologized to teammates hours after the video became public Wednesday and many like Williams said they had forgiven him.

But Williams said Thursday that healing the broken trust will take time because the racial slur puts a damper to my spirits to what type of person he is. I'm more cautious now to approach him.

This is hard to talk about man. It's tough me being an African American and to say that hurts me Williams said after practice. It's a derogatory word. I don't know him. I did see the tape. It's disheartening for a guy to say something like that.
You're angry. There are several other words he could have said. But he used something that was over the top.
Williams was asked if he can put Cooper's epithet behind him.
It takes time man he said. It's something Riley has the potential to learn from and understand the harshness of how he came at that guy. I'm a forgiving person. So we can't throw the book at the guy can't disown him. We can get through it eventually. But right now it's fresh.
In the locker room he seemed like a pretty cool dude. He didn't seem like a racist. I just think he made a mistake.

Williams underscored why Cooper needs to understand how deep his slur cut in the black community.
I think about what our ancestors have done like Martin Luther King Malcolm X people who fought for civil rights in this country against people using those type of words Williams said. We look at the media rap artists some people in the locker room that word gets tossed around.
I think about my grandmother my great grandmother who endured being called that name and being segregated how the potency of that word gets thrown around like an everyday thing. We as a black community pounce on somebody who uses it in a derogatory way when there are times that we use it freely.
He added There is no place for that word in anybody's language anybody's mouth whether you're black white green purple blue. It's still a harsh word.''
Deborah Weinstein a Philadelphia employment lawyer and president of the Weinstein Firm which provides group and individual sensitivity training said Cooper probably can expect two sessions roughly three hours long with an employment lawyer or human resources professional.
A short term stint in sensitivity training isn't intended to change a person's core beliefs but rather to promote respectful behavior within a work environment Weinstein said. For Cooper this means how he will act in a locker room that includes many African American teammates.
The important thing when we are reacting to something that has already happened is to drive home to the individual that they need to take this very very seriously. There are no second chances after this Weinstein said. We want to intervene and make a difference so the employer has sense of confidence that this sort of thing won't happen again.

Hopefully he'll see how much I mean it how sincere I am Cooper said.
Asked if the incident could divide his locker room Kelly said there is a concern.'' He added I know Riley made a heinous mistake. I was appalled because I've been here since April and that's not the Riley Cooper I know.
Avant remained optimistic.
I don't think it will divide our locker room he said. The most mature thing is to not go by your feeling. We saw what that can do.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden left Moscow's international airport today for the first time six weeks and thanked Russia for granting him temporary asylum.
Anatoly Kucherena a Russian lawyer advising Snowden on his bid for asylum in Russia showed reporters a copy of the permit saying it was valid for up to a year and renewable after that.
I have just handed over to him papers from the Russian Immigration Service. They are what he needs to leave the transit zone Kucherena said according to the Russian Interfax news agency.
US Promises Not to Torture Kill Snowden
Snowden released a statement through WikiLeaks which has aided his bid to find asylum after releasing details of the National Security Agency's vast data collection operation.
Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law but in the end the law is winning. I thank the Russian Federation for granting me asylum in accordance with its laws and international obligations Snowden said.
The move was not applauded in Washington.
We are extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step despite our very clear and lawful requests in public and in private to have Mr. Snowden expelled to the United States to face the charges against him White House press spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at the daily briefing.
Mr. Snowden is not a whistle blower. He is accused of leaking classified information and has been charged with three felony counts. And he should be returned to the United States as soon as possible where he will be accorded full due process and protections he said.
The White House is now re evaluating whether President Obama will attend a planned bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next month.
I don't have a scheduling announcement for you today but obviously this is not a positive development. And we have a wide range of interests with the Russians and we are evaluating the utility of a summit Carney said.
Kucherena said Snowden was tired from his month long stay in Moscow's Sheremetyevo International airport.
The lawyer said Snowden was expected to stay in an undisclosed location adding that the fugitive leaker feared for his safety. He reportedly left the airport in a taxi accompanied by Sarah Harrison of the anti secrecy organization WikiLeaks who traveled with him to Moscow from Hong Kong.
The lawyer said he is preparing a visa application for Snowden's father who said in an interview with Russian state television this week that he would like to visit his son.
Snowden applied two weeks ago for temporary asylum in Russia.
Snowden had been stuck inside the transit zone of the airport since he arrived June 23. He could not enter Russia because he did not have a Russian visa and he could not travel to safe haven opportunities in Latin America because the United States had canceled his passport.
The decision by Russia to allow Snowden into the country comes at an awkward time with Obama expected to attend a summit with Putin in early September. U.S. officials have warned that if Snowden were allowed to stay in Russia Obama might pull out of the meeting.
Attorney General Eric Holder wrote a letter last week to Russian authorities urging them to turn Snowden over and assuring them he would not be tortured or face the death penalty.
Russia said in response this week that its position had not changed and it would not extradite Snowden.
Putin had previously said Snowden could stay in Russia but only if he stopped harming the United States by releasing more classified information. In a meeting with human rights activists last month Snowden said he believed he met that condition because he had already given away all his sensitive data.
In perhaps a sign of the difficult position Snowden has put him in Putin later likened Snowden to an unwanted Christmas present.
A poll by the independent Levada Center taken earlier this month and released Wednesday found that 51 percent of Russians supported Snowden's leaks and 43 percent approved of granting his asylum.

On Thursday Rodriguez participated in a simulated game for the first time since he began to work his way back from a quadriceps strain that landed him on the disabled list in late July. Hours after his 9 a.m. ET arrival at the team's minor league complex a media posse continued to grow behind the outfield fence of a field made unplayable by wet conditions.
Rodriguez meanwhile had been transported to nearby George M. Steinbrenner Field the club's spring training stadium. Locked out of that facility photographers set up on a pedestrian bridge beyond the right field stands and attempted to snap shots of Rodriguez fielding ground balls and running on the base paths. Home plate and first base were visible only to a pair of television station helicopters circling overhead.
Back at the minor league facility early in the afternoon Rodriguez surprised a group of reporters gathered on the sidewalk by pulling up beside them in his luxurious Maybach.
I'll talk to you guys but no cameras he said. Noticing photographers hustling in his direction from the opposite side of the driveway Rodriguez quickly raised his window and drove off.

Despite recently vowing to fight any such punishment the Rodriguez camp reportedly is discussing a settlement with Major League Baseball officials in an attempt to avoid a lifetime banishment that would nullify a huge contract with the Yankees that is set to run through the 2017 season.
It has been a tumultuous year for the Rodriguez beginning with hip surgery in January. More recently he was involved in a feud with the Yankees regarding his readiness to return to the active roster drawing widespread attention in the media. He rankled general manager Brian Cashman by publicly sharing a second opinion to the contrary after a team physician determined Rodriguez was not fit to play as he had hoped in a recent series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.
He may be about to settle simply for the opportunity to play there ever again.
Fashionably Late HM Finally Launches E Commerce In The U.S.
It s taken 13 years from the time Swedish fashion retailer HM HM landed on American shores for it to finally launch an e commerce site here. Cue the sound of hundreds of thousands of fashionistas flexing their click fingers and whipping out their credit cards.
HM s been hedging on the promise made three years ago to offer its of the moment apparel and accessories to masses of fashionistas living far from one of its 268 U.S. locations. In 2011 HM dipped a toe into the e tailing waters selling selected pieces from its Fall collection via fashion magazine Elle s website.
Though the items sold out in short order the company hesitated to roll out a dedicated online store citing that it needed more time to iron out any possible kinks that could hinder secure shopping receiving payments and work out any supply chain issues.
Postponing turned out to be prescient as the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh and subsequent deaths of over 1 000 workers put HM in the spotlight. Not for having garments produced on that site but for its outsized presence in a country that still offers its garment workers the lowest minimum wage.
HM s Helena Helmersson spoke to FORBES shortly before the collapse about steps the fast fashion retailer was taking to ensure workers were treated fairly. Shortly after the tragedy HM led a group of retailers to sign a safety agreement. That move inspired brand loyalty among customers who still wanted to shop but were feeling twinges of guilt about the conditions in which their trendy threads were made.
Today HM officially hit the switch without much fanfare. Just an announcement made on Twitter and Facebook Facebook to some 17 million followers. Daniel Kulle HM s U.S. president told WWD that the retailer was taking an omni channel approach with an updated mobile app to complement the e commerce site and physical locations in 32 states. The company also plans to mail print catalogues starting in the Fall. Kulle estimated that the four channels will reach 300 million people in the U.S. but declined to project sales.
Though it s major competitor Inditex Inditexwhich launched Zara online in 2010 has had a major headstart HM still has room to grab a piece of marketshare. And that market is significant. Forrester Research estimates that e commerce in the U.S. will top $262 billion in revenue in 2013 and increase to $370 billion by 2017.

After lackluster results selling devices made by other companies Google is giving hardware another try this time with a smartphone made by a company it owns. On Thursday Motorola Mobility the handset maker Google bought last year for $12.5 billion and then retooled introduced the Moto X the company s first major device since the deal.
The phone has all the standard features expected of today s top smartphone with a twist the ability to control the phone by talking to it without lifting a finger.
The stakes are big for Google and not only because of the high price that it paid for Motorola. Google is enormously profitable but its growth is slowing because of lagging ad sales. Finding success with the new phone could lead to a new source of revenue and a way to get more users to view the company s ads.
The company has been aggressive in absorbing Motorola. It put a former top executive Dennis Woodside in charge of Motorola laid off thousands of Motorola workers and formed a new team with many employees from its fiercest competitors including Apple Samsung and Amazon. A major marketing effort is expected for the Moto X.
I think we ve created an awesome company said Iqbal Arshad Motorola s senior vice president of global product development. And Moto X represents who we are.
Still sales could be an uphill climb. The phone decked out with multiple processors sensors and voice controls is landing squarely in the brutally competitive market for high end smartphones. And Google has a lot to prove before it is taken seriously as a hardware maker.
Motorola s executives contend they have something special with the Moto X which will be sold by all the major American phone carriers beginning in late August or early September. It has a 4.7 inch touch screen which puts it right between the smaller iPhone 5 and the larger Galaxy S4 from Samsung. And it has a sophisticated camera and high speed connections.
But what executives hope makes the Moto X stand out is its voice command capabilities like continually listening for a user s voice and quickly reacting to commands. Saying O.K. Google now find me my way home will quickly pull up a Google map with directions to a user s house for example. The phone learns the voice of its owner and responds only to it. Some people might find this creepy but it is a feature that a user must turn on voluntarily.
Google executives have long talked about building computers that are so integrated into our space that we can ask them to do things without lifting a finger. The Moto X is a big step in that direction.
Mr. Arshad said the company had to develop a new computing system X8 to make Moto X work well. One low powered processor in the phone is devoted to processing natural language. Another low powered processor is dedicated to detecting movements of sensors two twists of the wrist will open the phone s camera for example. The design of the computing system allows the phone to constantly listen for the user s input and quickly respond without constantly draining the battery he said. (The phone s battery is supposed to last 24 hours handling various tasks.)
We want to change the way people call we want to change the way people search and we want to change the way people navigate Mr. Arshad said. That s what touchless control enabled you to do. So we had to design a mobile computing system to do that.
Still as other device makers have learned it takes more than snazzy features to gain traction in the handset business. Samsung and Apple dominate the market and some Asian manufacturers like Huawei and ZTE are selling low cost smartphones and quickly gaining ground in economically disadvantaged markets.
Tero Kuittinen a telecom analyst at Alekstra a mobile diagnostics firm said it was bad timing for Google to be competing in the high end of the smartphone market. The smartphone business is still expanding in the second quarter this year it grew 52 percent compared with last year according to the research firm I.D.C. But most of that growth is coming from manufacturers offering cheap smartphones in emerging markets he said.

CLEVELAND An Ohio man convicted of imprisoning three women in his house and raping them repeatedly for a decade blamed his actions on a sex addiction and said he was not a monster as he was sentenced Thursday to life without parole plus 1 000 years.
Ariel Castro 53 apologized to his victims before he was sentenced. He blamed a sex addiction his former wife and even the FBI for not thoroughly investigating the abductions while claiming most of the sex was consensual and that the women were never tortured.
These people are trying to paint me as a monster he said. I'm not a monster. I'm sick.
Just before the sentencing one of three women he kidnapped stood within feet of Castro and told him his life was over.
You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back Michelle Knight said. I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning.
Knight 32 was the first woman Castro abducted in 2002 after he lured her into his house with the promise of a puppy for her son. Relatives of the other two victims spoke on their behalf.
At one point in Castro's statement he said There was harmony in that home a claim Judge Michael Russo dismissed.
I'm not sure there's anyone in America that would agree with you he said.
Castro pleaded guilty last week to 937 counts including aggravated murder kidnapping rape and assault. A deal struck with prosecutors Friday spared him from a possible death sentence for beating and starving a pregnant victim until she miscarried.
During his statement Castro pointed out that the FBI talked with his daughter who was friends with one of the women he kidnapped.
The FBI let these girls down when they questioned my daughter he said. They failed to question me.
He also said he had never had any trouble until he met his wife who has since died.
I was never abusive until I met her he said.
The judge told Castro that there was no place in the world for people who enslave others.
These women never gave up hope Russo said. In fact they prevailed.
As Castro was led away Knight watched smiling.
Thursday's hearing gave prosecutors a chance to detail some of Castro's assaults and law enforcement a chance to describe the jury rigged prison he built in his ramshackle home.
FBI agent Andrew Burke said Castro created a makeshift alarm system and chained the women inside bolted bedrooms.
Bedroom windows were boarded shut from the inside with heavy closet doors and doorknobs had been removed and replaced with multiple locks he said. The house was divided in ways to make it more secure and to hide the existence of rooms he said.
Burke also testified that Castro would occasionally pay his victims after raping them. But he then would require them to pay him if they wanted something special from the store.
Responding to questions from prosecutors Cleveland police detective Andrew Harasimchuk said that the women all described being physically sexually and emotionally assaulted for years. He said all three women were abducted after Castro offered them a ride and that each was chained in his basement and sexually assaulted within a few hours of being kidnapped.
Some horrific details of the women's ordeal had already emerged including tales of being chained to poles in the basement to a bedroom heater or inside a van. One woman was forced to wear a motorcycle helmet while chained in the basement and after she tried to escape had a vacuum cleaner cord wrapped around her neck.
Castro repeatedly starved and beat one of the victims each time she was pregnant forcing her to miscarry five times.
He forced the same woman on threat of death to safely deliver the child he fathered with another victim on Christmas Day 2006. The same day prosecutors say Castro raped the woman who helped deliver his daughter.
The women quickly escaped after Amanda Berry kicked out the door panel on May 6 and Castro was arrested within hours. The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004 when they were 14 16 and 20 years old.
Berry 27 made a surprise onstage appearance at a rap concert last weekend and a second victim Gina DeJesus 23 has made a few televised comments. Knight appeared with Berry and DeJesus in a video in early July thanking the community for its support.

Powerball jackpot climbs to $290M as no one wins top prize
The Powerball jackpot keeps growing.
It's now up to $290 million with a cash option of $168.4 million after no tickets sold for Wednesday's drawing matched all the winning numbers according to the Powerball website.
The winning numbers are 8 24 39 49 and 59. The Powerball drawn was 5.
Tickets that matched five numbers but not the Powerball were bought in each of California Connecticut Florida New York Oregon Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.
The tickets purchased in Oregon and Oklahoma are worth $2 million apiece since the lucky player in each of those states paid an extra $1 and chose the Powerplay option. The others won $1 million each before taxes.
The best anyone in New Jersey did was four numbers and the Powerball a $10 000 prize.
Wednesday marked the 11th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner.
The next drawing is 11 p.m. Saturday.
Bagged salad possible cause of cyclospora outbreak illness may last weeks

The Nebraska Health and Human Services have identified the source of the latest cyclospora outbreak that sickened 78 Nebraskans since mid June.

Bagged salad could be the cause of the recent cyclospora stomach bug outbreak that has sickened more than 350 people in at least 15 states.
Iowa has reported the most cases of the cyclospora bug with 143 people falling ill. An investigation by the Iowa Department of Public Health has linked a prepackaged salad mix to the outbreak after the agency determined at least 80% of reported cases were exposed to the same mix reported CBS News.
The mix whose brand or manufacturer have yet to be named contains iceberg and romaine lettuce carrots and red cabbage. Ingredients in the mix are not believed to be Iowa grown. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health the salad mix is no longer being sold in the state.

Cases of the infection began popping up early this month. It is caused by the parasite cyclospora found in contaminated food or drinking water. The bug causes watery diarrhea that if untreated can last an average of 57 days. Specific lab tests are needed to detect cyclospora which requires specific treatment. Other symptoms include fatigue loss of appetite weight loss bloating increased gas stomach cramps nausea vomiting muscle aches and low grade fever.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cases have also been found in Texas Nebraska Florida Wisconsin Illinois Georgia Missouri Arkansas Connecticut Kansas Minnesota New Jersey New York and Ohio.
The FDA recommends safe food handling and preparation measures including washing hands utensils and surfaces with hot soapy water before and after handling food and thoroughly washing all fresh produce before consumption.

Barbara Morgan Anthony Weiner Aide Lashed Out At Former Intern Olivia Nuzzi
NEW YORK A former campaign intern who was heavily criticized by embattled mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner's chief spokeswoman in an expletive laced tirade has accepted her apology.
The ex intern Olivia Nuzzi tweeted her acceptance of the apology by spokeswoman Barbara Morgan on Wednesday.
Morgan had ranted about Nuzzi in an interview with the political news website Talking Points Memo. She later apologized for using vulgar language to describe Nuzzi and said she believed her interview was off the record.
Talking Points said it contacted Morgan on Tuesday for an unrelated story when she launched into her attack on Nuzzi for writing an unflattering first person article for the Daily News about her experience working on Weiner's campaign.
In the Tuesday cover story Nuzzi wrote that Weiner often called interns Monica a reference to former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and that many people worked on the campaign only to get close to Weiner's wife Huma Abedin an ex aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Nuzzi also said many of the campaign staffers including Morgan had short resumes noting that the communications director last worked as the press secretary for the New Jersey state education commissioner.
Morgan said Nuzzi was bad at her job and threatened to sue her.
She was clearly there because she wanted to be seen. ... she would just not show up for work Morgan said adding that she tried to fire Nuzzi but gave her a second chance when Nuzzi begged to come back.
Nuzzi stopped interning for the campaign about four weeks ago Morgan said.
Later she issued an apology.
In a moment of frustration I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off the record conversation she said. It was wrong and I am very sorry which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize.
Nuzzi a college student and writer tweeted that she of course accepted Morgan's apology.
Morgan tweeted a photo of a swear jar stuffed with $100 bills and said Not my best day yesterday. Should've known better been better. Gotta pay up.
Last week Weiner a married Democrat acknowledged exchanging sexually explicit messages with women online after similar behavior spurred his resignation from Congress in 2011. He released a new campaign video Tuesday evening saying he won't quit the mayor's race despite pressure from politicians and newspaper editors.
A poll released Monday found Weiner's support fell from 26 percent last week to 16 percent.
