Dont Blame LeBrons Cramps or San Antonios A/C Breakdown For Heats Loss

It s tempting. Too tempting really especially if you ve joined the LeBron vs. Jordan debate over the last few years. Remember Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan nearly collapsing on the court because of the flu still scored 38 points to lead Chicago to a crucial Game 5 victory in Utah (the Bulls would clinch the series at home in Game 6) And Thursday night we had LeBron James cramping in the San Antonio sweat after the arena s air conditioning system malfunctioned being carried off the court in the fourth quarter before the Spurs closed the game with a 16 3 run to beat Miami 110 95.
MJ would not have done that. Man up LeBron. It s tempting.
But it s ludicrous.
James remember played pretty great in the oppressive heat. He scored 25 points in 33 minutes on 9 17 shooting while grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. Rather than seeing this as a sign of weakness or that he s fragile I think it s the opposite says Dr. James Gladstone co chief of sports medicine at the Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He pushed his body as far as he could go.
And while San Antonio s A/C malfunction is embarrassing and a potential danger to fans and players it should not have stopped the game despite the protestations of the NBA Players Association. The playing conditions for tonight s game were completely unacceptable from the opening tip Ron Klempner acting executive director of the union wrote in a text to Bloomberg. In a situation like this there needs to be more open communication before a decision is made that could potentially place players at risk.
But players weren t slipping all over the place. If anything the game was a throwback to outdoor summer hoops in the park to the 1980s when the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers played in 100 degree swelter at the old Boston Garden. Everyone played under the same conditions. No team had an advantage. The better team won. If you like the Heat harp on that. Not the heat.

But on a day when her serve gave her fits Sharapova 27 asserted her mettle to storm back for a 4 6 7 5 6 2 victory that proved yet again that the Russian s biggest weapon is her iron will.
I fought I scrambled and I found a way to win said Sharapova who will seek her fifth major title Saturday having completed a career Grand Slam in 2012 on the same Parisian red clay court.
It will mark her third consecutive French Open final pitting her against fourth seeded Simona Halep of Romania who dismissed Germany s Andrea Petkovic 6 2 7 6 (7 4) in Thursday s other semifinal.
Halep 22 whose rapid ascent in the rankings has mirrored Bouchard s has yet to lose a set in the tournament. But she has never beaten Sharapova in three previous meetings falling most recently in a clay court final in Madrid.
I don t know the 5 foot 6 Romanian said when asked how she planned to solve Sharapova. Halep is smart and quick on court but gives up eight inches in height and six years pro experience to Sharapova.
I know I m short Halep said with a smile but I have to be happy and just enjoy.
Few would have predicted this championship pairing when the 2014 French Open dawned May 25.
But top seed and defending champion Serena Williams heavily favored to claim the 18th major that would have tied the singles mark shared by Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova was toppled in the second round. Second seeded Li Na the 2011 French champion who started the year by claiming her second major the Australian Open failed to win a single match. And third seeded Agnieszka Radwanksa tumbled in the third round.
Of the four semifinalists Sharapova was the only one who had reached a Grand Slam final not to mention won all four (Wimbledon in 2004 the U.S. Open in 2006 the Australian Open in 2008 and the French in 2012).
She also dwarfed the others in star wattage not simply a former No. 1 with $28 million in career prize money but a global brand with multimillion dollar endorsement deals with Porsche Nike and Cole Haan among others.
Sharapova strode onto Philippe Chatrier court trailed by a 20 year old who looked at first blush like a slightly smaller version of herself.
Like Sharapova the 5 10 Bouchard wore her long blonde hair in a ponytail secured by a visor. Outfitted by Nike as well Bouchard sported a flouncy tangerine dress nearly as coquettish as Sharapova s pink and orange frock.
But the pretty dresses were mere sugarcoating on two gritty brawlers who make no apology for caring more about winning matches than making locker room friends. They are fierce competitors.
Bouchard had failed to win a set against Sharapova in their two previous meetings both last season. Since then the Canadian had climbed from 67th in the world to 16th with an aggressive baseline game that s predicated on attacking the ball on the rise.
It carried Bouchard to the semifinals of this year s Australian Open so she felt entirely deserving of her place among the French final four. She broke Sharapova in the third game of the match. And after Sharapova broke back Bouchard broke again to claim the first set.
Both played a ragged scrappy second set that Sharapova closed following a rash of service breaks by capitalizing on one too many forehand errors by Bouchard.
With a game that s best suited to hard courts Sharapova once described herself as a cow on ice when competing on clay. In many respects being 6 2 is an asset in women s tennis but it doesn t lend itself to fleet footed movement on clay. Still the Russian has developed a flair for sliding on the surface and it helped her defend better in the third set.
Sharapova also drove the ball deeper and solved the yips in her serve in the decisive set never facing a break point while twice breaking Bouchard.
At the end of the day it s not how you finish the first set said Sharapova now 53 4 on clay since 2012. It s how you finish the last set.
Halep confessed she struggled to control her emotions when she stepped on court for her first Grand Slam semifinal. But after a few shots she settled into her game firing sharply angled groundstrokes and mixing in tricky drop shots to trip up Petkovic.
Ranked 45th in the world one year ago Halep will rise to No. 3 when the rankings are computed Monday.
I had impressive 12 months she conceded but today at this tournament it s fantastic. Now I have emotions also to speak and to say how I feel. It s incredible.
Belmont Stakes 2014 NBC insists it isnt rooting for California Chrome but ...
OK we're not going to shout Liar liar pants on fire ' but let's be real. People at NBC are rooting for California Chrome to win the Triple Crown no matter how much they deny it.
Sure win or lose the ratings for the race will be whatever they are. But postrace numbers will be higher if California Chrome wins Viewers (and bettors who wagered on Chromie) will want to watch a bunch of good ol' boys from Dumb Ass Stables celebrate making history with a horse who doesn't have the most impressive breeding line.

We're not here to root NBC race analyst Mike Battaglia said via Newsday on a conference call with the media. We're here to report what happens.
But then his conscience got the best of him and he added You know we'd all like to see a Triple Crown winner.
Besides as a network that has invested heavily in horse racing coverage NBC would benefit from a story that wooed more viewers to the sport.
(And it would like to hold the audience as the network slides into coverage of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings.)
I'm really looking forward to it NBC's Tom Hammond said. And while we won't be rooting I would like in the rest of my lifetime at least to see a Triple Crown winner if we could and to cover one would be great.
Hammond was there when Affirmed beat Alydar in 1978 to win the last Triple Crown but he wasn't on the air. NBC did not have the rights to the race but it's had 36 years to get ready for the next one especially after watching a dozen horses win the first two legs of the Triple Crown since then and fail.
We're not rooting obviously but having seen failures so often through so many years we all would love at some point to see one of these horses pull it off analyst Randy Moss said.
We all think California Chrome not only is a great story but he's in there with the fighting chance to pull it off. Maybe he's the one.
While Saturday's race probably won't surpass the 21.9 million viewers who watched Smarty Jones' 2004 Triple Crown attempt it will attract a huge audience and the network will be prepared with 16 hours of coverage from Belmont on NBC and NBCSN starting at 5 p.m. Friday. Sister outlets CNBC MSNBC and The Weather Channel also have been called to Belmont duty.
And while the network is rooting for California Chrome (Is too Is too ) one NBC employee knows what it's like to dash big dreams Jerry Bailey now an NBC analyst was riding Empire Maker in 2003 when he crushed Funny Cide's bid for history at Belmont.
Even Bailey has seen the light.
At that point in time my job was to try and win a race even if it included denying the horse a Triple Crown Bailey said. But from this side of the fence I have the interest of what's best for the sport. To see it would be wonderful.
Box Office Tom Cruises Edge Of Tomorrow Earns $1.8M In Thursday Previews
The first numbers are in for Warner Bros. Edge of Tomorrow. The Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt sci fi thriller earned an okay $1.8 million in Thursday night previews which started around the country last night at around 8 00pm. In terms of relatively similar comparisons White House Down earned $1.35m via its Thursday night previews last June while Now You See Me earned $1.5m and After Earth earned $1m in Thursday previews in late May of last year. Now You See Me and White House Down earned around 5% of their weekend total on Thursday ending their weekends with $29m and $24m respectively. After Earth earned 3.5% of its $27m debut on Thursday. The best news is that the Thursday number is higher than the $1.1m earned by Tom Cruise s Oblivion in April 2013 and that film earned 2.9% of its $37m weekend on Thursday.
The only question is whether Edge of Tomorrow earns closer to 3% of its weekend on Thursday or closer to 5% of its weekend on Thursday. That may not be a huge percentage per se but it will make a difference come Sunday morning. To wit if the film plays exactly like White House Down which earned 5.5% of its weekend total on Thursday Edge of Tomorrow will end the weekend with $32 million for the weekend which is actually a pretty solid number considering the fear of an under $25m debut heading into last night. I would argue that the worst case scenario is that it did 6.5% of its business last night giving the film a $28m debut weekend. The best case scenario somewhat unlikely I ll admit is that Edge of Tomorrow plays like Oblivion and thus earns just 2.9% of its weekend total on Thursday giving the Time Warner Inc. release an obscenely high $60m opening weekend.
Now I don t think anyone is expecting the Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt film to open with $60 million over the weekend but the relative comparisons argue that the film isn t the preordained flop that some had written it off as. This also shows the somewhat tricky nature of guesstimating weekend box office with films that don t have a preexisting obsessive fan base. So being realistic we re probably looking at a Thursday to weekend % of between 3.5% and 5.5%. Ironically that s basically what Thursday previews represented even a few years ago for major releases back when the midnight/Thursday preview culture was less mainstream. So barring an inexplicable crash and barring a miracle Edge of Tomorrow is arguably looking at an opening weekend of between $32m and $51m.
On principle I m inclined to guestimate closer to $35 million than $50m if only because $50m for the weekend would put the film in uncharted territory for a Tom Cruise film outside of War of the Worlds and the Mission Impossible franchise. Nonetheless the film is absolutely terrific and the reviews have been beating said drum for over two weeks. The one advantage the film will have over The Fault in Our Stars (whose Thursday preview numbers have not been released) is that general moviegoers just arbitrarily deciding on a night out are more likely to choose the Tom Cruise sci fi action thriller as opposed to the Shailene Woodley teen centric cancer drama. And for the film to get to the feared $25m or below range it would have to have an unusually front loaded 7.2% in terms of its Thursday to weekend box office which is the kind of figure you get for a heavily anticipated sequel or geek centric property.
Of course as always with the Thursday box office this is all just fun with math. But I think I can comfortably presume that Edge of Tomorrow which you really ought to see this weekend will find itself opening above the $30 million range this weekend. We ll know when we know and you ll see it here when we know. In the meantime go see Edge of Tomorrow preferably in IMAX 3D on principle and go see The Fault in Our Stars while you re at it.

Does Orange is the New Black Make Netflix A One Hit Wonder
When Netflix announced its plans to get into the original content game it was met with near immediate and unanimous excitement. However as the actual programs themselves began making to air there were mixed reactions. Lillyhammer was mostly a dud House of Cards was a critical and Emmy darling that never crossed over into pop culture relevancy Arrested Development was met with mixed reactions from fans and Hemlock Grove saw a mostly negative reaction upon release. However one show did manage to break through the glass ceiling that is Netflix viewership and spread into cultural relevancy as well as critical praise Orange is the New Black. Now on the day of the show s second season premiere we look back at Netflix s existing slate and ask a very important question will the digital distributor have another hit like Orange is the New Black ever again
The women s prison set series broke a lot of conventions upon its premiere mainly in the arena of cast equality. But the fandom of Orange is the New Black isn t just about social relevancy it s about entertainment value. Instead of taking a grim dour look at the world like House of Cards and Hemlock Grove have Orange is the New Black pushed the premium cable desires of its network to the side and forged its own path. While it may take place in the very real unforgiving setting of prison Orange is the New Black is a dramedy at heart and this is what turned it from a simple series into a cultural icon.
Unfortunately Orange is the New Black is only one example in a group of over a half dozen shows that managed to achieve this standing. While Netflix made waves for being the first digital entity to push heavily into original programming much of that goodwill has been lost over the years and there needs to now be a serious discussion if the network can still achieve its once high standing. That is of course if Netflix cares about that standing in the first place.
For Netflix it doesn t matter how many Emmy nominations a show gets how harsh or praise worthy the critics are or how many tweets come through. All that matters is how many subscribers sign up for the service with the sole purpose of watching a given program. No one should kid themselves into thinking Netflix doesn t have a viewership goal in mind for every one of their original series and if one reaches that goal it can consider itself safe for another season on the digital platform. For Netflix achieving cultural relevancy means far less than the amount of subscriber income sitting in the bank account.
As the television model continues to evolve it s going to start becoming a real question of how much and how many numbers lead to relevancy. Game of Thrones has only recently started tracking above three million viewers an episode yet it remains one of the most talked about programs in the medium. Could Netflix have another Orange is the New Black hit in them Of course they could in fact it could come sooner rather than later if either The Wachowski s Sense8 or Marvel s Daredevil take off in 2015. But for the moment Orange is the New Black remains as the services only break out hit among its slate of programming. Whether or not that makes a difference to the kind of programs the service puts into production is anyone s guess at this point.

(CNN) A much anticipated encounter between President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin came on the sidelines of a lunch held Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of D Day.
But a conversation between Putin and Ukrainian President elect Petro Poroshenko may have been more fruitful.
We believe it's a good thing they were able to speak but it's not a substitute for the steps it (Russia) needs to take to deescalate things especially violence a senior administration official said. It's a positive thing that they spoke but more needs to be done.
The official said Putin has publicly voiced support for Poroshenko but he's not taking steps to back that up.

It would have to be mutual the administration official said of the cease fire. Not just on the part of the people of Ukraine but also the Russians.
During their informal aside Obama told Putin that to reduce tensions in Ukraine Russia must recognize Poroshenko as the country's legitimate leader and stop supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Obama also told Putin that Russia must stop the flow of weapons across the border into Ukraine Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said.
Working with the Ukrainian leadership is the only way to reverse Russia's increasing isolation Obama said according to Rhodes.
We didn't think it was the right time place or circumstances to have a discussion the senior administration official said. We believe they haven't legitimately recognized Poroshenko.
The talk lasted 10 to 15 minutes.
Speculation had been brewing that the American and Russian leaders would meet despite apparently elaborate steps taken by Hollande to avoid a tense encounter.
On Thursday he dined with Obama before hosting a separate dinner with Putin.
The pair were also seated well apart for the D Day lunch. With Hollande and the queens of Britain and Denmark between them the two seemed unlikely to have to converse unless they wanted to.
The World War II commemorative events also brought Putin and Poroshenko together in their first face to face meeting.
They talked briefly before the leaders went to the D Day lunch. German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood with them as they spoke.
Putin and Poroshenko shook hands before their informal exchange Hollande's office told CNN.
No interaction was seen between Obama and Putin at that point.

Speaking Thursday in Brussels Belgium Obama said he and Putin were likely to cross paths in France although no formal meeting was planned.
Obama said then that if they spoke he would give Putin the same message on Ukraine that he has given him in phone calls over past weeks and in his public statements.
Putin has a chance to get back into a lane of international law he said.
Obama said Putin could start by recognizing Poroshenko stopping the flow of weapons over the border into Ukraine and ceasing Russian support for pro Russian separatists in Ukraine.
Putin in an interview with French television station TF1 did not discount the possibility of meeting with Obama.
As for my relations with Barack Obama I have no reason whatsoever to believe he is not willing to talk to the President of Russia he said. But ultimately it is his choice. I am always ready for dialogue and I think that dialogue is the best way to bridge any gaps.

(CNN) Shailene Woodley isn't just the lead actress in The Fault In Our Stars. She's one of the book's original fans.
Long before she landed the role of Hazel Grace a bright 16 year old facing cancer she sent the novel's author John Green an impassioned lengthy e mail rallying for The Fault In Our Stars to become a movie.
I didn't say I needed to be Hazel Woodley said at the movie's New York premiere on June 2. I said I needed this movie to get made. Because I knew that it would change the lives of millions of people.
If the movie version of The Fault In Our Stars is anything like the book Woodley will soon be proven right. The adaptation now in theaters is faithful to its beloved source material which chronicles the romance between two cancer patients with humor intelligence and honesty. Author Green had already amassed a fan base when The Fault In Our Stars was released as a novel in January 2012 one devoted enough to earn him the title of The Teen Whisperer.
But The Fault In Our Stars has stretched far beyond its intended young adult demographic selling millions of copies and sticking to The New York Times Young Adult best seller list for 78 weeks.

Time magazine didn't name it The Best YA Novel of 2012 it recognized it as the year's best book period the kind of endorsement Woodley could get behind.
The 22 year old actress who is developing a reputation for pushing back against Hollywood's rules recently explained to New York Magazine the impact she thinks Fault In Our Stars could have.
In 'Fault ' I am trying to rewrite what a female lead can look like Woodley said. You've never seen a woman on the poster for a movie with a cannula in her nose.
Although Woodley said she wasn't gunning for the role of Hazel when she wrote Green the author remembers that exchange a bit differently.
The letter was extremely long like 40 pages long and ... I didn't technically know who Shailene Woodley was he said. So I just responded like 'That's such a lovely e mail Thank you so much But I am not a casting director.' And then when I saw her audition of course I was horrified that I had not written her back and said like 'Please Please Be in our movie '
Of course it's unlikely that Green who calls Woodley a gift to the film would have had to beg. Woodley who's gone from ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager to high profile projects like The Descendants and Divergent in the blink of an eye was game for the role chopping off her long hair to accommodate the part.
In the process she gained something as well a deeper sense of gratitude for life.
On this beautiful day there's kids at home in bed hooked up to chemo machines Woodley reflected at the movie's June 2 premiere. There's no way to justify it. So really it taught me a deeper sense of gratitude and a deeper sense of appreciation for these small palpable moments because they're the only thing that we're guaranteed.

The Comedy Lineup Expands on Netflix
They always mention that they watched it on Netflix said Mr. Ansari the 30 year old comedian best known as a creator of the MTV sketch comedy series Human Giant and a star of the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation.
Until now Netflix has given Mr. Ansari s fans one more chance to hear his jokes months or years after the telling. For his third stand up special Mr. Ansari is moving Netflix to the front of the line. His show Buried Alive based on his tour of the same name will make its Netflix debut on Nov. 1. It will be the biggest stand up special distributed by Netflix to date in much the same way that House of Cards was that streaming service s first high profile original drama.
There s more comedy coming the company says as it opens another front of competition with HBO. In announcing the expansion into comedy specials and feature documentaries last month the Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings said that the service had become a big destination for fans of these much loved and often underdistributed genres.
Mr. Ansari s conversations with his fans bolster Mr. Hastings s assertion. Netflix seems like it s the closest delivery service of media we have that actually matches up to our preferences and expectations he said in a telephone interview during a break from Parks and Recreation production. (Lately he has been binge viewing the ABC drama Scandal through Netflix.)
Mr. Ansari said he was amused when a fan asked him on Twitter When are you going to put out another stand up special on Netflix I need more free stand up. Netflix of course costs $8 a month. It s so convenient you don t even think about the fact that you re paying for it Mr. Ansari said.
Netflix s forays into licensing the first run rights to television shows much as a TV network does are predicated on the belief that people are more likely to keep paying if the service has exclusive programming. In June the service presented a comedy special by John Hodgman and last week it presented the premiere of one by Mike Birbiglia who wrote positively on Twitter of Netflix s international reach I signed a crazy contract that I think included other planets.
Netflix has comedy specials by Marc Maron and Kathleen Madigan in the works. Mr. Ansari s show is unlike those before it a Netflix spokeswoman said because the company intends to put a significant promotional campaign behind Buried Alive billing it as original programming on par with Arrested Development or Orange Is the New Black.
We ve been working to make Netflix a great home for comedians to do their best work and to support their live performance careers and having Aziz debut his new show with us is a validation of that strategy Ted Sarandos the chief content officer for Netflix said in an e mail.
Mr. Ansari s special was taped in Philadelphia in April. He said the material was a lot more mature than that in his previous specials focusing on the differences between the friends his age who are getting married and having children and himself a commitment phobic comedian. All that stuff seems very far away for me he said. His first book announced last week by the Penguin Press will tackle similar themes about single life but with new material.
Mr. Ansari plans to release Buried Alive as a $5 download but only after the Netflix premiere. The straight to fans strategy pioneered by Louis C. K. in 2011 was successful for Mr. Ansari last year he said but its downside was obvious You re kind of preaching to the choir.
He added as modestly as possible I have a pretty big choir. But with the new special he said my goal is to get people that don t know my stuff already and maybe expand my audience.
That s where Netflix comes in. The service has more than 30 million subscribers in the United States and its algorithms for recommending shows keep improving. Mr. Ansari said that when he was at home using Netflix his own shows are recommended to him all the time.
Unlike say passive viewers of Comedy Central though Netflix watchers requires at least a bit of action which is a potential drawback for some. On Sunday Mr. Birbiglia told his Twitter followers that apparently the only way to find his Netflix special is if you type in my last name.
Mr. Ansari s Buried Alive was filmed and edited before Netflix entered the picture. He said he bumped into Mr. Sarandos at an event in New York and he commented on the popularity of Mr. Ansari s past specials. That conversation led to the distribution deal. (Neither side would comment on the financial terms.)
It s an interesting time for someone to be releasing content Mr. Ansari said. No one s quite figured out things. You can do all types of things. At this moment it really seems like Netflix is the way to go.
New York Times website offline after malicious external attack
The New York Times website was the subject of a malicious external attack on Tuesday a spokeswoman said.
The attack left the website unavailable to many users from about 3pm ET. It was the second time the NYT's site has gone offline in the past two weeks.
Eileen Murphy a spokeswoman for the New York Times said on Twitter that the the initial assessment was that the issue was most likely result of malicious external attack that the company was working to fix .

A Twitter account purporting to represent the Syrian Electronic Army an internet hacktivist group supportive of the Assad regime claimed responsibility.
The problems began just after 3pm ET and initially appeared to be intermittent. At 4 23pm the NYT posted on Twitter

The site vanished just after 11am along with its mobile app. It remained offline for two hours before returning. At the time of that incident Murphy said it was caused by maintenance work and there was no reason to believe that this was the result of a cyber attack .
It was also alleged on Tuesday that Twitter had been the victim of an attack by the SEA. Bryan Ries a senior editor at Newsweek tweeted that the social media website had lost its domain to the Syrian Electronic Army .

The Syrian Electronic Army allegedly hacked the Washington Post's website on 15 August. Managing editor Emilio Garcia Ruiz said the website had fallen victim to a sophisticated phishing attack to gain password information .
The SEA is a collection of computer hackers who support the Syrian president Bashar al Assad. They have used denial of service attacks and other methods to target opposition groups and western media websites. The group's relationship with Assad's government is the subject of debate.
