Diners at Ashley s Breakfast Shoppe on Bowdoin Street stared Thursday at his photograph on the wall as they reminisced about the irrepressible man they still call the mayor.

People downtown shouted the news to strangers. Sadness flooded an East Boston coin laundry as his image flickered across a television.

The death of former mayor Thomas M. Menino Thursday hit Boston like a punch. People winced in pain as news ricocheted from barber shops to boardrooms dry cleaners to pizza parlors.

I just closed my door and sat there and cried said Marie St. Fleur a former state representative who later served in Menino s Cabinet.

He died just 297 days after walking out of City Hall. It has been more than a century since a Boston mayor passed so soon after leaving office. None served longer than his 20 years.

When people think of Boston they think of Mayor Menino said Maryanne Snow who clutched her chest outside Faneuil Hall when she heard he was gone.

To many Bostonians Menino had seemed invincible a fighter who repeatedly survived serious illnesses. As his health failed Menino pushed to keep up his relentless pace. He began walking with a cane but not without panache His walking stick was a baseball bat outfitted with a curved maple handle.

His death brought politics to a standstill. Days from the Nov. 4 election gubernatorial candidates canceled public appearances. President Obama described him as bold big hearted . . . the embodiment of the city he loved.

His successor Mayor Martin J. Walsh held a somber press conference on the steps at City Hall where behind Walsh stood scores of stone faced lawmakers city officials and government workers who got their start on Team Menino.

Governor Deval Patrick recalled his last bedside visit with the mayor Sunday when Menino could barely speak. Days earlier the mayor gave the governor memorable advice.

Don t let the knuckleheads get you down Menino told him according to Patrick.

People all over the city knew Menino who famously and prodigiously made a point of meeting ordinary residents.

They knew him best in his native Hyde Park. Judy Pais has lived across from the Meninos for more than 35 years. After Pais s father died the Meninos sent over two turkeys with all the trimmings and cut a trip short to return for the funeral.

Pais recalled the mayor rising early after storms with a snow blower to clear the sidewalks up and down Chesterfield Street.

What other mayor gets out there with a snow blower Pais said. He was a regular guy. He really really was.

They knew him at the DryDock Cafe an unassuming restaurant in the Seaport District that his presence helped make into a place for power lunches. Owner Cathy Spiropoulos sometimes saw him three times a week because she said he liked to help out the small person.

In the North End his longtime barbers Gino Colafella and Johnny Cammarata recounted a story that has become barbershop legend. Cammarata gave Menino his first mayoral haircut circa 1994 and Colafella last took scissors to his thinning hair on Oct. 4.

When he started with us he had a full head of hair. He d say Can you thin it out Colafella said. Then later he d say Don t cut too much.

The hulking edifice of Boston City Hall seemed almost to sag as red eyed secretaries janitors and parking clerks whispered the news. Sitting at a parking ticket payments counter Menino s former scheduler Joanne Wallace her eyes the same color as her red sweater could barely get the words out.

He was an unbelievable guy said Wallace who juggled Menino s nonstop schedule from 1993 to 2011. He was like a father. He was amazing.

Janitor Rocco Addessa who has cleaned City Hall for two decades teared up as he talked about his old boss.

He would whack me over the head with his cane but he was just joking around Addessa said. He was always joking with me.

Meredith Weenick first met Menino in a job interview 12 years ago as a freshly minted Harvard MBA.

The interview was brief direct and to the point said Weenick a Texan who rose to become the city s chief financial officer. He asked me only a handful of questions that were all about me proving how much I cared about Boston because that s the only thing he cared about.

At Santarpio s Pizza in East Boston the staff mourned. Menino often came by for lunch with co workers or his wife and his grandchildren. He loved the barbecue and the pizza and often took a pizza to go for his son Tommy a police officer. Often his waiter was Tony Costanza 63 a server for more than 30 years.

Costanza said Menino always graciously posed for photos with constituents. Other people made Menino happy Costanza said even if they interrupted his lunch. Usually Menino showed up smiling but if something was troubling the mayor you could read it in his face.

In those moments Costanza said he would greet Menino and then slip away to change the music on the sound system.

If you played Frank Sinatra songs he would smile from ear to ear Costanza said.

In Dorchester Menino made an annual Christmas Eve pilgrimage to Bowdoin Street walking the heart of a neighborhood that struggled with episodic violence. It made a difference the Rev. Richard Doc Conway a priest at St. Peter Parish said in an interview.

Where are you going to spend your time if you re going to go out on Christmas Eve Are you going to go up on Beacon Hill or are you going to do it here Conway said.

Jose Araujo remembered Menino s presence 11 years ago when he opened Computers for All on Geneva Avenue.

He worked all his life and he couldn t enjoy his retirement Araujo said woefully. He should have taken off a little earlier. Poor guy.

On Bowdoin Street Nicole Lewis has three photos from Menino s visits stashed in a folder behind the counter of the dry cleaner she and her husband have operated for 27 years. Lewis cannot recall seeing a politician in the neighborhood before Menino took office in 1994. But soon the sight of the mayor became expected.

It became a routine Lewis said. He was a good man.

Others recounted Menino in Brighton Roxbury and Mattapan where members of Boston s black community gathered to pay tribute to the life of a mayor who championed their causes as his own.

But for many Menino s impact was personal. In 1988 when Menino was a councilor a 22 year old City Hall security guard named Thomas Tinlin caught his eye. Menino began pushing Tinlin to finish college. The day after winning his first election as mayor Menino called. I want you to come work for me Menino told Tinlin but you have to go back to school.

Tinlin earned a bachelor s degree then a master s in public administration. He rose to become one of the longest serving transportation commissioners in Boston history.

I don t know where I would be if Tom Menino hadn t come into my life and taken a shine to me said Tinlin who is now chief of operations and maintenance for the state s roads and highways. I see him everywhere in my life.

As Thursday wore on Angela Menino returned to the home in Hyde Park that she had shared for decades with her husband.

She and a small group emerged from a silver unmarked Ford Taurus police car. His wife of nearly five decades held the Louisville Slugger cane that the former mayor had relied on for the past year.

Eric Frein Arrested 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Alleged cop killer and survivalist fugitive Eric Frein has been arrested in Pennsylvania. His capture was confirmed by Pennsylvania State Police. In a brief statement state cops said We have taken Eric Frein into custody. The arrest was made at 6 p.m on October 30.

Frein 31 had been on the run for nearly seven weeks in the Pocono Mountains. He s accused of killing Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II and wounding Trooper Alex T. Douglass of the Pennsylvania State Police at their barracks in Blooming Grove on September 12.

Here s what you need to know

1. There Was No Gunfight Between Cops Frein

Frein has been on the run since September 12 and cops feared he would attempt to go down in a blaze of glory. According to the FBI Frein was surrounded on Thursday afternoon and he surrendered. Not shots were fired.

The accused killer was holed up in an abandoned airport hangar. WPVI reporter Chad Pradelli tweeted that Frein had told cops that he was in the hangar for 48 days but they don t believe him.

Fox 29 reporter Jennifer Joyce says that Frein was caught as he was walking back to the hangar he was unarmed at the time. A bomb squad cleared the hangar before it was searched by cops. Inside police found high powered weaponry reports the AP.

Frein was shackled with the handcuffs that belonged to the officer he killed and he was transported in that officer s patrol car. The suspected killer spent the night in a cell in the Blooming Grove barracks seven weeks after he s believed to have shot two state police there.

2. The D.A. in Charge Is Seeking the Death Penalty

Eric Frein was arraigned in court on murder charges. He will be held without bail.

According to ABC Philadelphia Frein confessed to the murder of Cpl. Byron Douglass. As he was brought in and out of the courtroom angry protesters shouted at Frein Are you sorry and Why did you do it The former fugitive looked gaunt and had a bloodied nose with cuts around his eye and on his cheek.

He has his first preliminary hearing on November 12. The accused cop killer entered no plea in the case. Pike County District Attorney Raymond Tonkin told the Associated Press that he will be looking for the death penalty. In a press conference late on the night of October 30 Sam Rabadi chief of the Philadelphia office of the Bureau of Alcohol Firearms and Explosives said He has been stripped of his guns his bombs and now his freedom.

After the news of Frein s arrest became public a law enforcement source called Frein a coward according to The Patriot News.

3. He Surrendered in Tannersville

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Frein was arrested close to Tannersville. The hangar where he was found is at Birchwood Pocono Airpark a facility that was built by legendary pilot Wally Hoffman. It s about 75 miles east of the New York state line.

On October 29 police had said that they felt he was close to state Route 390 Tannersville is 25 miles from that location.

Police had found clues for Frein throughout the search such as diapers and cigarettes.

4. Over 1 000 Officers Were Involved in the Search for Frein

By the end of September 2014 the amount of officers involved in the search had risen to 1 000. Those officers were comprised of state cops ATF FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service. The cost of the search is being estimated at around $10 million dollars.

5. One of the Troopers Hit by Frein Was Released From the Hospital Last Week

On September 12 Frein s alleged to have killed Cpl. Bryon Dickson II in Pike County. He seriously wounded Trooper Alex Douglass in an horrific attack outside a state police barracks. On October 17 Douglass was released from hospital. Douglass underwent four surgeries while in hospital.

The manhunt had canceled Halloween for kids in Pike County. The day after Frein was arrested Halloween was back on for kids.

Even as a kid a Friday Halloween night was special.

Without school the next day the case to stay out late was that much easier to make to skeptical parents. Plus back to back unencumbered candy binge days were almost too good to be true.

For those of us past our trick or treat days a Friday Halloween means finding a good party or concert to show off a new costume or escape reality for a night.

This year there's plenty to choose from statewide for those willing to tear themselves away from The Walking Dead re runs.

We've gathered 10 Halloween bashes rock shows and costume parties for your consideration including Friday's Trolley Square less Halloween Loop.

Friday 6 p.m. Halloween party at 16 Mile Brewing Company (413 S. Bedford St. Georgetown). A Halloween costume contest live music and the unveiling of a new brew will mark All Hallows' Eve at 16 Mile. The band 15 String will be pumping out the rock covers and the brewery will premiere Soul Cake a 9 percent ABV imperial amber ale. The 21 and older event has 10 piece Wilmington funk/RB band Big Package headlining. WSTW host Spencer Graves will DJ. There will be zombification stations throughout the club with professional makeup artists turning club goers into zombies for undead prom pictures. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

Friday 9 p.m. Lower Case Blues at Argilla Brewing Co. at Pietro's Pizza (2667 Kirkwood Highway Milltown). Lower Case Blues might as well go by the name Lower Case Boos since the blues trio will provide the soundtrack to Argilla's Halloween party this year. There will be a costume contest. Free.

Friday 10 p.m. Spokey Speaky at Kelly's Logan House (1701 Delaware Ave. Wilmington). If you thought our Lower Case Boos name idea was bad then get ready for Spookey Speaky Even with the Logan House officially off the Halloween Loop there should be some costumed Halloweeners in the crowd Friday since there's a costume contest on the night's schedule. But the bar should not be swamped like it has been for Halloween Loop nights in recent years. So if you want to avoid much of the loop madness and chill with some of Wilmington based reggae upstairs at the Logan House is for you. Free.

Friday 10 p.m. The Bullbuckers at Dogfish Head Brewings Eats (320 Rehoboth Ave. Rehoboth Beach). Dogfish's biggest Halloween event the sold out Milton Mischief Night beer tasting and tour at its Milton brewery happened Thursday night. But the holiday will still be in full swing the following night with Wilmington ska act The Bullbuckers returning to the Dogfish stage for a free show. A Halloween night at Dogfish Head with some of the freshest Punkin Ale you can find is a pumpkin obsessed beer geek's dream.

Saturday 9 p.m. Halloween Party with Freshly Squeezed at The Starboard (2009 Del. 1 Dewey Beach). There's a little taste of Halloween in just about any night at The Starboard. No other bar draws customers more prone to dressing in costume year round. Whether tied to a holiday or not you're always bound to stumble upon a character in a goofy get up. With that in mind the bar's Halloween party and costume contest is the real deal. Freshly Squeezed will be on stage but the real show might be in the crowd. Free.

Before I Go To Sleep Is An Amnesia Thriller Youll Hope To Forget

The bloodshot eyeball that opens to greet a brand new day and I mean brand new day in the thriller Before I Go To Sleep belongs to wealthy English homemaker Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman). Christine suffers from psychogenic amnesia the fright moviemaker's best friend. She can store memories during the day but they reliably vanish overnight marooning poor Christine in what is either a hapless attempt to upstage Memento or a remake of Groundhog Day in noir.

Unlike Bill Murray's sour weatherman and because she's you know a girl Christine is 100 percent victim staggering through life armed only with whispered queries and startled bunny reaction shots. When she looks in the mirror she sees a woman 10 years older than she believes herself to be.

Christine lives in a lonely house in the wintry woods near London where it rains and rains. Friends and family hover all of them including her slightly too devoted husband Ben played by Colin Firth waving flags ostentatiously marked unreliable narrator. The couple may or may not have a son who might be dead or not.

Men keep bossing Christine around and she has no idea which of them is friend foe or lover. Her therapist Dr. Nasch is played by the excellent Mark Strong a man of inescapably villainous countenance and therefore maybe a good guy Dr. Nasch's method skews to the unorthodox and over involved. He gives Christine a camera to record a video diary as a memory aid but he's also an inappropriate hugger. Is it Nasch or Ben or Christine's bestie (Anne Marie Duff) who's responsible for the daily memory shards of the past trauma that has brought Christine low

For all I know the novel (by S.J. Watson) on which Before I Go To Sleep is based is full of nuance and surprise. If so writer director Rowan Jaffe whose resume boasts an unnecessary 2010 remake of the great 1947 noir Brighton Rock has mangled the job and with a heavy hand. Comedy is unintended character is binary Ben murmurs sweet nothings into Christine's neck then shoots grim stares at her Nasch comes on either sinister or hyper protective. Mostly we see the backs of heads. The lighting is more murky than oblique as Christine's violent past flashes back in a dirty ochre palette with a throbbing heart soundtrack in back.

Worse yet the movie has nothing fresh and plenty that's old and nasty to say about violence against women. This sort of exploitation has been a Hollywood staple forever but Before I Go To Sleep is a singularly unpleasant specimen that takes pleasure in smacking a woman around and worse in repeated graphic detail before finally throwing her a pro forma bone of empowerment. With luck Kidman will erase this inept thriller from her memory as quickly as it leaves theaters.

Virgin Galactics SpaceShipTwo Crashes During Test Flight Over Mojave Desert

Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo space plane crashed during a test flight over California's Mojave Desert this afternoon the company said.

A report issued by the California Highway Patrol indicated that one pilot died and another suffered a major injury the Associated Press reported. At a press conference on Friday afternoon Kern County Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said that the injured pilot had ejected from the craft and was doing as well as can be expected at the hospital.

The company said White Knight Two the jet powered craft used to launch the space plane landed safely. The debris field from the space plane covered several miles Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said. Mojave Air and Space Port CEO Stuart Witt said at the press conference that flight crews had detected nothing that appeared abnormal before the crash. The test community is very small. We are human and it hurts CEO of Mojave Air and Space Port said of the incident.

The NTSB would be sending a team to investigate the incident Kyle Harvey of Bakersfield Now reported.

The accident occurred just as it seemed space flights were near after a period of development that lasted far longer than hundreds of prospective passengers had expected.

When Virgin Group licensed the technology from Microsoft co founder Paul Allen who funded about $26 million for SpaceShipOne Branson envisioned operating flights by 2007. In interviews last month he talked about the first flight being next spring with his son.

It's a real setback to the idea that lots of people are going to be taking joyrides into the fringes of outer space any time soon said John Logsdon retired space policy director at George Washington University. There were a lot of people who believed that the technology to carry people is safely at hand.

Friday's flight marked the 55th for SpaceShipTwo which was intended to be the first of a line of craft. But this was only the fourth flight to be powered by a rocket. During the other flights the craft was either not released from its mother ship or it functioned as a glider.

SpaceShipTwo was designed to provide a suborbital thrill ride into space before returning to Earth as a glider. At 60 feet long it featured two large windows for each of up to six passengers one on the side and one overhead.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. One difference on this flight was the type of fuel being used.

In May Virgin Galactic announced that SpaceShipTwo would switch to a polymide based fuel a type of thermoplastic. It had been fueled with a type of rubber called HTPB.

Scaled Composites the company that is building the spaceship for Virgin Galactic had extensively tested the new fuel formulation on the ground President Kevin Mickey said. He said the rocket motor configuration had not changed on this flight and characterized the new fuel as a small nuance to the design.

Officials said they had not noticed anything wrong before the flight.

I detected nothing that appeared abnormal said Stuart Witt CEO of the Mojave Air and Space Port.

Virgin Galactic owned by Branson's Virgin Group and Aabar Investments PJS of Abu Dhabi sells seats on each prospective journey for $250 000 with full payment due at the time of booking. The company says that future astronauts as it calls customers have visited Branson's Caribbean home Necker Island and gone through G force training.

Stephen Hawking Justin Bieber Ashton Kutcher and Russell Brand are among the celebrities to sign up for flights. Virgin Galactic reports taking deposits totaling more than $80 million from about 700 people.

A related venture The Spaceship Co. is responsible for building Virgin Galactic's space vehicles.

During testing for the development of a rocket motor for SpaceShipTwo in July 2007 an explosion at the Mojave spaceport killed three workers and critically injured three others. A California Division of Occupational Safety and Health report said the blast occurred three seconds after the start of a cold flow test of nitrous oxide commonly known as laughing gas which is used in the propulsion system of SpaceShipTwo. The engine was not firing during that test.

Friday's accident was the second this week involving private space flight. On Tuesday an unmanned commercial supply rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded moments after liftoff from a launch site in Virginia.

Virgin Galactic had planned to launch space tourism flights from the quarter billion dollar Spaceport America in southern New Mexico once it finished developing its rocket ship.

Christine Anderson executive director of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority did not want to comment on the events unfolding Friday in the California desert or what effect they might have on Spaceport America and the future of commercial space travel.

Virgin Galactic is in line to be the main tenant at the spaceport that was built specifically to launch paying customers into space a dream of Branson's. His company has repeatedly pushed back the timetable for when the $250 000 flights were to begin pointing to delays in development and testing of the rocket ship.

Taxpayers footed the bill to build the state of the art hangar and runway in a remote stretch of desert in southern New Mexico as part of a plan devised by Branson and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. Critics have long challenged the state's investment questioning whether flights would ever get off the ground.

SpaceShipTwo is based on aerospace design maverick Burt Rutan's award winning SpaceShipOne prototype which became the first privately financed manned rocket to reach space in 2004.

It's an enormously sad day for a company Burt Rutan told The Associated Press in a call from his home in Idaho where he lives since retiring.

The Today show's nod to Saturday Night Live was so good it was scary

In honor of Halloween Friday the cast of the morning show channeled characters from some of the most iconic SNL skits over the years.

Willie Geist and Tamron Hall kicked off the SNL Today segment as Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri in The Spartan Cheerleaders get up.

Chelsea Handlers topless photo fight

(CNN) Comedian Chelsea Handler often aims to spark controversy and one of her latest Instagram snapshots is no exception.

It shows Handler posing topless astride a horse in the style of a famous photo of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

When I first read that movie was about a guy who stays out all night sinking his teeth into young girls I was like 'Why are they making a movie about Jeremy Piven ' When the audience hooted with surprise Handler replied It's OK you can laugh at that. He's an a hole. As Chelsea Lately became a late night mainstay Handler moved on to bigger stand up waters such as the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010. Her antics included getting pregnant after sharing a hot tub with the cast of Jersey Shore and referring to Kanye West as the big black elephant in the room. Needless to say Handler's performance was controversial. It seems the more famous Handler's become the more she hangs out with the A listers. Jennifer Aniston pictured here with Handler at Glamour's 2011 Women of the Year Awards is just one of the host's celebrity pals. In 2011 Handler took Chelsea Lately down under to Australia but if you think she adjusted her act for an international audience you'd be wrong. When Henry Rollins arrived on the Lately set Handler was just as raw as ever. In 2012 Handler's brand of comedy was so popular that NBC tried to get a piece of her success with the comedy Are You There Chelsea based on her 2008 hit book Are You There Vodka It's Me Chelsea. The sitcom starred Laura Prepon with Handler serving as an executive producer. The series only lasted one season. Handler had become such a popular presence on late night TV that many were pulling for her to make the jump from cable to broadcast when Jimmy Fallon announced he was leaving Late Night in 2013. Here she joins Fallon and Steve Higgins on NBC's Late Night in November 2012. The show was eventually taken over by Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers. While the clamoring to see Handler move into the late night boys club on broadcast continued more opportunities popped up when David Letterman too announced his retirement Handler had something else up her sleeve. I have never had nor will have any desire to take a job someone else has already had Handler tweeted in April 2014. Speculation to the contrary is inaccurate. Godspeed. In the end Handler surprised everyone in April 2014 when she announced that she was moving to Netflix. The new role will involve stand up comedy specials and another talk show. Instagram pulled the photo down more than once according to Handler because it violated the company's standards.

Handler posted a notice from Instagram that says the photo doesn't follow the app's community guidelines which specify Accounts found sharing nudity or mature content will be disabled and your access to Instagram may be discontinued.

Handler argues that the company's implementation of its policy is sexist. If a man posts a photo of his nipples it's ok but not a woman Are we in 1825

Instagram has not responded to requests for comment.

The topic of women having the right to go topless on social media was addressed by Scout Willis daughter of actors Demi Moore and Bruce Willis in May when she posted photos to Twitter of herself walking topless in New York.

Willis chastised Instagram for its nudity policy in the tweets Legal in NYC but not on instagram and What instagram won't let you see FreeTheNipple.

Handler has apparently decided that Instagram is too restrictive for her purposes. She posted a photo of her adorable pups to the site Friday along with a farewell message.

Here's what we learned during the University of Louisville's 42 31 loss to No. 2 Florida State on Thursday night

THE CARDINALS ARE NOT QUITE AT FLORIDA STATE'S LEVEL BUT THE GAP ISN'T MASSIVE UofL sprinted to a 21 0 lead and the fans here were going bananas. It seemed like an upset was imminent. But then Jameis Winston happened. The Cardinals were outscored 42 10 over the game's final 25 minutes. There's a reason Florida State is a defending national champion with a 24 game winning streak.

DEVANTE PARKER IS FULLY HEALTHY Parker returned from his foot injury for the North Carolina State game nearly two weeks ago and was dazzling but he was still getting into game shape. A bye week took care of that and it was clear Parker was fully back to his old spectacular self. He finished with 8 catches for 214 yards. And the pressbox was loaded with NFL scouts and front office personnel.

JAMES QUICK MIGHT BE DONE AS A PUNT RETURNER FOR A WHILE Punt returns have been a bit of an adventure for the talented sophomore this year as he entered Thursday's game having fumbled three punts this season. His struggles continued in this game. First he signaled for a fair catch and let the ball hit the turf then decided to field it which you're not allowed to do. He was whistled for a delay of game and also nearly fumbled the ball off of his shoulder. Then on the next punt he did fumble but he fell on the ball before Florida State could. MICHAEL DYER IS A BOWLING BALL UofL's running back situation has been bizarre this year with Dominique Brown being replaced by Brandon Radcliff who has now been replaced by Dyer. Finally healthy the senior is showing flashes of Auburn form. In this game he finished with 134 yards and three touchdowns.

LORENZO MAULDIN'S HAMSTRING INJURY IS A CONCERN The linebacker injured his hamstring in the N.C. State game and appeared to reinjure it in the first half on Thursday. He left the game during the second quarter and at one point headed to the locker room. He did return however.

Winston fired a deep ball that appeared headed toward a cluster of UofL players but two of them collided with each other seemingly allowing the ball to get past them and into the hands of Ermon Lane who zipped into the end zone for a touchdown.

ACC FOOTBALL IS GOING TO BE FUN TO WATCH This felt a lot different than the American Athletic Conference didn't it PJCS was buzzing both teams were bullying and a national television audience got quite a show. And the nice thing for UofL fans is that games like this will be the new normal.

CHARLOTTE N.C. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton had been biting his tongue all week about the extra short turnaround from a Sunday night game to a Thursday night road game. But Payton couldn't resist bringing it up during his opening comments after New Orleans' 28 10 victory over the Carolina Panthers calling it crazy silly and foolish.

You know Thursday night games are one thing but to play on a Sunday night game and then come back and play on a Thursday ... you can't really complain publicly because first off it's not an excuse for your players you don't want it to be. But I would say it's crazy. It's silly all right It shouldn't happen Payton said.

Later he added It's foolish. You got three guys that are hurt in there right now. To play a Sunday night and travel is foolish.

According to Elias Sports Bureau only four times in the last 20 years had an NFL team been forced to play a Thursday road game following a Sunday night contest. Only one team Miami in 2003 had won both.

Payton said he didn't bring it up with the league when the schedule first came out because he didn't fully appreciate it until you go actually through logistics and see what your players go through.

And he said it wasn't a big campaign for him saying That's just my little frustration with something as simple as scheduling that can be easily fixed.

Payton did bring up the scheduling challenge with players during the week but they said his message was to make sure they didn't allow themselves to use it as an excuse heading into the game.

His biggest message was nobody cares and no one wants to hear it. ... Control what you can control said offensive tackle Zach Strief who also serves as the Saints' NFL Players Association union rep. Now do you think it's fair to play a night game and then travel on a Thursday I mean no that's a tough deal. And they can spit out all the stats or whatever that they would like to spit out that it doesn't affect players and guys aren't getting injured more. At the end of the day it's baloney.

Obviously you say 'Why would we do that In all good conscious of player safety why would we do that '

Strief added What you love is the way the team responded.

Outside linebacker Junior Galette echoed that sentiment.

It's tough on your body. But Sean said you know if we come in here and lose we can't have excuses and say it's because we played two games in five days Galette said. I mean obviously we're world class athletes if anyone can do it we can.

Sean took care of us we just had a walk through practice we had a simple game plan. We knew we had to have a simple game plan to play fast and that's what we did tonight.

Eric Frein to make first court appearance on cop killing charge

After 7 weeks living off the land in a rugged state forest a subdued Eric Frein showing a small cut on his left forehead was arraigned Friday in Milford Pa. on a capital murder charge of killing a state trooper with a high powered rifle.

For law enforcement in Pennsylvania the capture of the 31 year old self taught survivalist Thursday night by U.S. Marshals was personal. He was put in handcuffs belonging to the state trooper he is accusing of killing Cpl. Byron Dickson and placed in Dickson's patrol car.

Now he will face justice '' Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said.

Frein wearing an orange jumpsuit arrived at the courthouse in a caravan that included an armored vehicle and police in fatigues carrying weapons.

Handcuffed and subdued the suspect was taken from a squad car and marched into the courthouse to the cheers and jeers of local residents.

U.S. Marshals part of a $10 million manhunt over 48 days stumbled upon Frein unarmed in a field near a hangar at a small abandoned airport in Tannersville on Thursday night in a routine sweep of the area state trooper Lt. Col George Bivens told reporters Friday after the arraignment.

He said that Frein was interviewed by troopers after his capture but Bivens declined to elaborate.

Asked why Frein allegedly fired on Dickson in the original shootings Bivens said I have characterized his actions in the past as 'pure evil' and I would stand by that.

Bivens said weapons found in the hangar were being collected and processed.

Asked if they knew how Frein was able to survive in the rugged terrain for almost seven weeks Bivens said the fugitive had hidden some supplies but was also able to get into cabins and other occupied structures to find food and shelter from the weather.

He had been hiding in the hangar in recent days officials said but was surrounded and captured while walking in a nearby field.

He was definitely surprised '' state police commissioner Frank Noonan said Thursday night..

He said Frein who complied when ordered to drop to his knees and surrender gave up because he was caught and he had no choice but to give up.

Noonan said authorities had kept up the pressure to try to capture the fugitive in the woods for fear that if he got into populated areas he might try to kill other police officers or civilians.

We weren't going to stop until this fugitive was arrested he said. And I'm glad it ended without any other loss of life including his.

Dickson's family as well as wounded Trooper Alex Douglass and his family expressed relief and gratitude over Frein's arrest Noonan said.

The capture brought widespread relief in the Pocono Mountain communities near the search area which was on edge during the lengthy manhunt.

Canceled Halloween festivities were back on the schedule Friday.

We as a town think the kids have gone through enough said Ralph Megliola chairman of the township board of supervisors.

Outside the local state police station where Frein was taken after he was caught local residents waved American flags and signs thanking Pennsylvania State Police.

Frein was captured about 35 miles from where Dickson was shot and killed by a sharpshooter outside the state police barracks in Blooming Grove on Sept. 12. The abandoned airport where he was found was the old Birchwood Pocono Airpark which was built in the early 1960s for a local resort and closed in 1998.

Pike county District Attorney Raymond Tonkin said he had filed an array of charges against Frein including first degree murder homicide of a law enforcement officer attempted murder possession of weapons of mass destruction and reckless endangerment. He said he would seek the death penalty in the case.

Noonan said Frein was in good condition and looked healthier than I would have expected.''

A local resident 15 year old Daniel Margoli tells the Times Tribune of Scranton that he saw police bringing the shackled suspect out of the field.

He looked really not healthy Margoli told the newspaper. He was real dirty actually. His hair was just all greasy.

Contacted by phone Frein's sister Tiffany said of her brother's capture I don't really know how to handle it the Times Tribune reports.

Community watches Frein manhunt in fear bemusement

Frein is accused of using a high powered rifle to kill Dickson a 38 year old father of two and wound 31 year old Douglass during shift change outside the barracks. The exact motive for the shootings has not been announced but Frein had voiced strong sentiments against government and law enforcement. Authorities have said they do not believe the troopers were specifically targeted.

Frein had only a minor criminal record a decade old misdemeanor case involving items stolen from a World War II re enactors' event in Upstate New York for which he spent 109 days in jail.

He belonged to a war simulation group modeled after Cold War era Eastern European troops. That apparently led to a film credit He played the 2nd German soldier in the 2007 movie Lustig which relates the tale of a concentration camp survivor.

Frein was a member of the Pocono Mountain High School rifle team. A police affidavit said Frein's father retired Maj. E. Michael Frein served in the Army for 28 years. He told investigators that he had trained his son in marksmanship and that his son doesn't miss.

In the barracks shootings the sniper using a .308 caliber rifle also fired at a civilian dispatcher as she tried to aid the victims police said. The gunman fired four shots over about a minute and a half video surveillance indicated.

The relentless search for the suspect began immediately afterward. Authorities found two empty rifle cases military gear flashlights a black hooded sweatshirt camouflage face paint and information on foreign embassies in the woods near the barracks.

A week later authorities said they found an AK 47 style weapon ammunition and other items they believe belonged to Frein. Police also found a U.S. Army manual titled Sniper Training and Employment in the suspect's bedroom at his parents' house.

Over the 48 days before his capture authorities thought they had long distance glimpses of the fugitive in the thousands of acres of woodland in the Ponocos near the New York and New Jersey borders. But authorities had to tread lightly because of Frein's skills as a sharpshooter.

The first break in the case came a few days after the shooting when a neighbor walking his dog found a Jeep Cherokee partially submerged in a swampy area. The neighbor called 911 and authorities found Frein's driver's license Social Security card gaming permit and two spent .308 shell casings according to a state police affidavit.

In the weeks that followed other gear pipe bombs and ammunition linked to Frein was found.

Menino was bold big hearted and Boston strong Obama says

WASHINGTON In 2004 the two men addressed the Democratic National Convention in Boston but they couldn t have been more different.

One spoke eloquently the other mumbled. One was on the political ascent the other was in a job he never wanted to leave.

But over the years those two men then candidate for US Senate Barack Obama and then Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino shared the political gene of empathy.

Nine years later when the two men appeared together in the dark hours after the Marathon bombing they spoke as one in extolling Boston s heroes and the city s virtues.

Menino arrived in a wheelchair and pulled himself up on his broken leg to address a crowd in mourning.

This is Boston Menino said. A city with courage compassion and strength that knows no bounds.

Menino was the emblem of a wounded city trying to heal as President Obama reminded the nation on Thursday.

Bold big hearted and Boston strong Tom was the embodiment of the city he loved and led for more than two decades Obama said in a statement on Thursday afternoon upon learning that Menino had died. As Boston s longest serving mayor Tom helped make his hometown the vibrant welcoming world class place it is today. His legacy lives on in every neighborhood he helped revitalize every school he helped turn around and every community he helped make a safer better place to live.

Obama revealed in the statement that he spoken on Wednesday with Menino s wife Angela shortly before the former mayor died. A White House official said Obama was aware of Menino s declining health and wanted to convey his thoughts and prayers.

As a politician Menino was vastly different from Obama. They clashed at times. Menino endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary and sent some of his campaign workers up to New Hampshire to help her win the state.

But a month after Obama s inauguration Menino was at the White House with other mayors bragging to the president about Boston. Menino later became more accepting of charter schools in part because of Obama administration education policies. Menino would also call upon Obama for help in his city.

After the Boston Marathon bombings for example Menino helped establish One Fund Boston a non profit that would provide assistance to the victims of the attack. But organizers were having trouble with IRS lawyers about allowing donors to the fund to claim their contributions as a tax deduction.

Obama had offered to help in the wake of the Marathon bombings so Menino asked him and Vice President Joe Biden for their assistance in dealing with the IRS. But in this case Menino wrote in his memoir Mayor for a New America the request came with a veiled threat.

It would be a shame if someone leaked the news that IRS bureaucrats were blocking help to the victims of the deadliest terrorist bombing since 9/11 Menino recalled saying in his book. The problem went away he wrote.

Menino who as mayor was always on the move became increasingly frustrated with the political paralysis he saw in Washington and the inability of national leaders to do basic tasks. To him it may have been the national equivalent of a snowstorm without city plows getting on the streets.

In December 2012 as Congress tried to figure out several financial issues Menino was in the hospital. He sat down and wrote a letter to Obama and House Speaker John Boehner.

In Washington winning the 24 hour news cycle is victory he wrote on Dec. 1 2012. You know what victory is for patients down the hall from me Walking.

Outside of Washington we don t spend all day on your potential Grand Bargain he added. Here the term sounds like the frozen smoothie Brian offers me in exchange for another go at the stair machine. But if it means you ll come together for the American people do that. We ve had enough Democrat and Republican speak for a while.

When Obama made a visit to Boston in October 2013 on the same day that the Red Sox were playing the Cardinals at Fenway Park in Game Six of the World Series Menino met Obama at the airport and presented him with a Sox cap (of the Red Sox variety not the president s beloved White Sox).

A few months later Menino was at the White House celebrating the Red Sox championship. He stood in the Oval Office leaning on a cane molded from a Louisville Slugger baseball bat as he and his wife Angela talked with the president. He ambled onto the South Lawn with Biden serenaded by a favorite Fenway song Sweet Caroline and its tale of good times that never seemed so good.
