There were many painful lessons in the opener for the Cleveland Cavaliers ...

CLEVELAND Ohio For the first time the new Cavaliers were under some pressure and they splintered especially on offense.

That was the surprising part how the Cavs had so much trouble scoring in Thursday's 95 90 loss to the New York Knicks at Quicken Loans Arena.

It's so easy to make too much from one game especially one of the most remarkable regular season openers in the history of Cleveland sports. These guys are human and some (especially LeBron James) seemed overwhelmed by all the hype.

But in the end the game is the thing.

And the odd part was the game started well for the Cavs. They noticed that Kevin Love was hot and they fed him the ball. He scored 12 points and the Cavs had a 25 18 lead. Early in the second quarter they were ahead by 11 points.

The Cavs won't admit it but it appeared they refused to take the Knicks seriously. They knew that New York was spanked 104 80 in Chicago the night before. And the Cavs seemed to be scoring with ease. At one point I told a few guys on press row This looks like a summer league game.

By that I meant the defense was sloppy for both teams. The Cavs were picking up some easy baskets on fast breaks mostly due to Love's determined rebounding and excellent long outlet passes.

James was bouncing the ball off his foot and throwing passes to places where he thought players would be found.

The Cavs had a 44 42 lead at the half and troubled loomed.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN

With so many scorers the idea is for the Cavs to make sure the ball ends up in the hands of the guys putting the ball through the basket. That was Love early in the game but he faded as the game went on. After the first quarter the Cavs rarely put him near the basket where he could score with ease.

He was 4 of 7 shooting in the first quarter only 2 of 7 for the rest of the game.

Some of this was on James who does control the offense. For whatever reason LeBron's jumper looked like a pancake splattering against the rim. He was 1 of 9 shooting from at least 10 feet.

James does have poor shooting nights from the outside but he usually compensates by scoring near the basket ... and bolting down the court for fast break layups and dunks.

But not Thursday.

Love looked ready to deliver a big night if the ball would only find him.

Kyrie Irving also seemed ready for prime time. He was 8 of 15 shooting for 22 points and seven assists.

But James dominated the ball. Usually he has a tremendous sense of which teammates are feeling confident and he sets them up with his passing.

Not on this night.

NO CHEMISTRY

James dribbled too much. The other players often stood and watched him. It was as if they deferred to James because he is the team leader and this was his night. The solid court spacing and decent ball and player movement that often appeared in the preseason and even in the first quarter vanished.

The Cavs have four players who are used to having the ball Dion Waiters Love Irving and James. None of them looked even remotely comfortable or sure of what they are supposed to do.

Nor were the Cavs able to figure a way to capitalize on the guys who were scoring namely Irving and Love.

That's the job of Coach David Blatt and James get the ball to the right guys in the right spots at the right times.

But the longer the game went on the more pronounced were these issues.

ONE GAME SOME ISSUES

Because the Cavs elected to rest some of their veteran players in training camp to avoid early season injuries some of these problems are expected.

Miami started 9 8 in its first season after James joined the team. That team found its identity with swarming defense. That will not be the trademark of these Cavs.

This team needs to score and rebound. It's still shocking that New York out rebounded the Cavs 35 33. Or that Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao combined for only six rebounds in 47 minutes.

I have no clue what Blatt was doing in terms of a substitution pattern.

Only 10 minutes for Shawn Marion Yet James played 43 minutes on a night where he struggled Irving also played 43 minutes Waiters was on the court for 38.

The Cavs were OUTSCORED by 13 points when James was on the court that was the WORST plus/minus stat of any of their players. Perhaps letting James sit a bit and watch would have settled him down.

Mike Miller played only three minutes didn't take a shot. Marion was 0 of 2 from the field. Granted he didn't look good but he is a veteran. He averaged 30 minutes a game for Dallas last season and never played fewer than 15 minutes in a game.

At the end Blatt was trying a lineup with Love at center James at power forward and three guards (Matthew Dellavedova Waiters and Irving). They played the final five minutes and outscored the Knicks 10 9. But let's not consider this a magic formula.

Blatt has to use his bench and he admitted as much after the game.

He must insist the ball move and put players in the game who make sure that happens. And he can't be afraid to rest James or anyone else having a lousy night.

Those are just some of the lessons from the opener.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Suge Knight and comedian Katt Williams were arrested and charged with robbery Wednesday after a celebrity photographer reported the men stole her camera last month.

Prosecutors say Williams and Knight who founded Death Row Records were arrested Wednesday. Knight has a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon and could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

The men are accused of taking a paparazzo's camera in Beverly Hills California on Sept. 5. The incident remains under investigation by Beverly Hills police who did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Williams who was arrested at a Los Angeles area courthouse when he appeared for an arraignment in a separate assault case faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Knight 49 was arrested in Las Vegas. Police said he was taken into custody without incident.

A phone message for Anthony Brooklier an attorney who has represented Knight was not immediately returned. An email message sent to Williams' agent Chris Smith was not immediately returned.

Williams 43 has starred in several comedy specials and appeared in films such as First Sunday and Friday After Next.

Knight was shot and wounded in a West Hollywood California nightclub about a week and a half before the incident with the photographer. He founded Death Row Records one of rap's leading labels in the 1990s but later declared bankruptcy and the company was auctioned off.

How The Big Bang Theory scored Billy Bob Thornton for a surprise guest spot

The Big Bang Theory moved back to Thursday night with nothing short of a miracle The show was able to keep a surprise cameo under wraps ahead of airing an act that s nearly unheard of in an age where spoilers freely leak long before episodes debut.

The CBS comedy welcomed Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton who played Dr. Oliver Lorvis a urologist who misunderstands Penny s (Kaley Cuoco Sweeting) flirtation while working and attempts to woo her. How did the cameo come to be

A few months ago we had seen an interview with Billy Bob talking about shows he likes. He was saying how much he likes Big Bang Theory and watches it all the time and gets so into it that he starts talking to the characters on the screen showrunner Steve Molaro tells EW. We thought that was so cool and we think he s so great.

The producers began with the idea of Penny taking off her engagement ring while working as a pharmaceutical rep to boost her sales. When we started thinking about Billy Bob the thought was that he could be the doctor who doesn t quite understand the signals that this would be a socially awkward doctor who falls for Penny s sales flirtations. We went back to Billy and his people with that thought and they thought it was really fun and cool so we went from there explains Molaro.

Surprisingly the producers didn t even have to bribe their live studio audience not to reveal the news on social media in the short turnaround between filming and airtime. We knew that the network wasn t going to promote it but there s only so much you can do audience wise. But somehow it stayed a secret Molaro says. That was what we were hoping for and it worked out well. People really responded to him and the episode.

Will the Fargo star return in a future episode Though there s nothing set in stone Molaro says Big Bang would welcome him back with open arms. He has said he had a wonderful time the showrunner says noting that Cuoco Sweeting and Thornton bonded over stories about fellow former co star John Ritter. All of us just fell in love with him. It was a magical week. If it can work out we d love to have him back. After we finished taping we had a table read the next morning. Everyone was a little sad that Billy was gone. It was that much fun having him around.

Check out a highlight from Thornton s appearance

The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Need a cheap last minute Halloween costume Go as these celebrities.

Some people spend weeks planning elaborate Halloween costumes designed to shock and awe.

Not us. And probably not you. We ll start rummaging through our closets oh about five hours from now searching for some combination we can at least pretend is a cleverly thought through costume. That s why we always fall back on celebrities because hey they wear clothes too (usually) just like us so we ve got that baseline for starters.

Here are a few cheap costumes that you can wear in a pinch with little to no effort on your end.

Kim Kardashian Wear your tightest outfit slick back your hair slather on contouring makeup and affect a perma pout. Done Don t have a skin tight white dress Just throw on you know some Under Armour and double stuff your bra. Adopt a nasally tone hold your arm at selfies length reach take photos with the most popular people at the party and post the most flattering ones ASAP.

Miley Cyrus Can you find a blonde pixie wig No Well just bobby pin your hair. I mean whatever. Or rock your longer locks and tell everyone you re still in your early Liam Hemsworth era. From there you just need heavy eyeliner glitter eyeshadow and an ultra crop top that covers your breasts but just barely and you re good to go. If you happen to have some unicorn ish or rainbow y gewgaws to put in your hair that ll help with the illusion. Don t forget to stick your tongue out all night.

Ariana Grande The new princess of pop is one of the easiest last minute costumes. Draw a dimple on your left cheek pop your hair in a high ponytail (got extensions on hand Awesome.) wear your shortest dress and highest boots. Bring it on home by batting your eyelashes hitting high notes and talking to people as though they are beneath you.

Matthew McConaughey Slather on your most orange toned bronzer tousle your locks just so and drawl like your life depends on it. Alright alright alright The benefit of choosing to emulate this versatile actor is you can choose whichever phase of him occupies your closet. Have a pair of bongos laying around Okay well how about like an empty coffee can You re good. Have a nice suit Wear that and then talk a lot of nonsense about Lincolns.

Matthew McConaughey walks the red carpet with his wife Camila Alves. (Christopher Polk/Getty)

Kanye West Dressing like a self proclaimed musical messiah should be fairly easy for the fashion forward. Leather pants and an unbuttoned shirt pretty much do the trick. Attitude is key Scowl and proclaim your unachievable greatness. Ideally you can find a hot lady in clingy white Under Armour to walk into the party with you.

Renee Zellweger Don t worry about hair or clothes that much the magic of this costume lies in the makeup. Wear eye widening liner and mascara and draw your lipstick just barely outside of your natural lip line. People might not be able to tell you ve done something different at first but they ll talk about it the whole party.

Renee Zellweger poses at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards in October 2014. (Mario Anzuoni/Reuters)

Beyonc She s had so many evolutions that whittling down your choices may be difficult. Single Ladies era is the easy and recognizable black unitard voluminous half ponytail foil wrapped around one arm to imitate a robotic hand. But midnight album dropping Beyonc is the easiest ripped denim shorty shorts with a flannel and a perfectly mussed bob. Tell everyone you woke up like this.

Nick Jonas For the 2014 iteration of the youngest JoBro you really only need to rock six pack abs and a dangerously low slung pair of jeans. Start out wearing a purity ring but casually misplace it by nights end.

Amanda Bynes We don t recommend this but the former Nickelodeon star does present an intriguing easy costume. It doesn t particularly matter what you wear she s been seen in any number of varied outfits but you need a colored wig. And then find a 19 year old clerk to call your boyfriend and tweet frequently and offensively throughout the party. Again we don t recommend.

Amanda Bynes arrives for a court hearing in July 2013. (Lucas Jackson/Reuters)

Pharrell Two different options on wardrobe either a blazer/button up/shorts or oversized T shirt/jeans but the key thing is finding that oversized Arby s hat and rocking it accordingly. Sing Happy so that everyone knows who you are but then keep singing it until everyone is annoyed to truly sell the costume.

Pharrell Williams performs onstage during We Can Survive 2014. (Christopher Polk/Getty Images for CBS Radio Inc.)

Nicki Minaj/Britney Spears In this Halloween costume two fer the only thing that really matters is a plastic snake. Or hey a real one if that s more convenient. Depending on your mood you can either say you re an Anaconda themed Nicki or a I m a Slave 4 U era Britney. Just remember not to wear a lot of clothes otherwise.

New Orleans Saints defense looking to build off newfound momentum

New Orleans Saints defensive end Akiem Hicks was happy with the team's defensive performance against Carolina but he still feels the team can get better.

The Saints held the Panthers to a season low 231 yards in Thursday night's 28 10 victory that vaulted New Orleans into first place in the NFC South. But Carolina quarterback Cam Newton rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown.

There's 32 great quarterbacks out there and we faced one last week with Aaron Rodgers Hicks said. Cam Newtown is another great talent. It was something that we put in our mindset that we wanted to stop him from getting out the pocket so much and make so many plays with his feet.

He was able to get out there and do what he does. He makes plays with his feet and his arm. We were just doing our best to limit those options.

Hicks finished with four tackles and one of the team's four sacks at Carolina. The Saints also forced two turnovers Thursday night. They have seven in the past three games after having just two in the first five games of the season.

We had the takeaways that were real important in the game coach Sean Payton said. I think believe it or not last week against Green Bay even though all the yards were given up was significant with all the takeaways against a real good offense.

It was good to see the pressure and the sacks the things that really directly affect the turnovers.

The Saints allowed Newton to complete only 35.1 percent of his passes (10 of 28) the least accurate performance of his four year NFL career. His 10 completions and 39.4 quarterback rating were also career lows.

I feel like we definitely came out and we were firing on all cylinders Hicks said. I feel like as a defensive unit we held it together and we were able to come back after some not so favorable plays. I would say that this was a good pretty good performance by our defense and more so an overall team effort.

The Saints' defense will be tested again Nov. 9 against Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Kaepernick has rushed for 260 yards this season with three games of 50 yards or more. However the Saints held Kaepernick to 25 yards rushing last season and 27 in 2012.

It's a fine line and you have to maintain your pocket pressure and not allow a quarterback that is really great with his feet to get out there Hicks said. A quarterback that plays with his feet they can get their mojo going if you let him get out the pocket and run around a little too much.

You want to limit that but you still have to play your style of defense and our style of defense is to pressure the quarterback.

Hicks said the team plans on healing during this mini bye week before getting back to work.

I feel like there's still another level that we can push ourselves to Hicks said. There were certain times (Newton) was able to break contain and get outside the pocket and make some plays downfield.

Being defensive minded you don't want to see that. You don't want your defense to give up anything. There's still another level to get to. We haven't reached a point we can be at yet.

What we learned in Louisvilles loss to FSU

Here's what we learned during the University of Louisville's 42 31 loss to No. 2 Florida State on Thursday night

THE CARDINALS ARE NOT QUITE AT FLORIDA STATE'S LEVEL BUT THE GAP ISN'T MASSIVE UofL sprinted to a 21 0 lead and the fans here were going bananas. It seemed like an upset was imminent. But then Jameis Winston happened. The Cardinals were outscored 42 10 over the game's final 25 minutes. There's a reason Florida State is a defending national champion with a 24 game winning streak.

BOBBY PETRINO LIKES MAKING A SPLASH On the first play of the game the offensive guru dialed up a deep ball and it worked. Will Gardner fired a 71 yard bomb to DeVante Parker and you could feel PJCS shake.

BUT MAYBE THAT GAMBLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH FOR PETRINO ON THAT DRIVE The Cardinals were stuffed on three plays and faced a fourth and 2 and rather than kicking a field goal and taking an early lead the Cardinals went for it and Gardner's pass fell incomplete.

DEVANTE PARKER IS FULLY HEALTHY Parker returned from his foot injury for the North Carolina State game nearly two weeks ago and was dazzling but he was still getting into game shape. A bye week took care of that and it was clear Parker was fully back to his old spectacular self. He finished with 8 catches for 214 yards. And the pressbox was loaded with NFL scouts and front office personnel.

Louisville WR DeVante Parker says he wasn't 100 percent vs. FSU

JAMES QUICK MIGHT BE DONE AS A PUNT RETURNER FOR A WHILE Punt returns have been a bit of an adventure for the talented sophomore this year as he entered Thursday's game having fumbled three punts this season. His struggles continued in this game. First he signaled for a fair catch and let the ball hit the turf then decided to field it which you're not allowed to do. He was whistled for a delay of game and also nearly fumbled the ball off of his shoulder. Then on the next punt he did fumble but he fell on the ball before Florida State could. On the next punt he had been replaced by Eli Rogers.

MICHAEL DYER IS A BOWLING BALL UofL's running back situation has been bizarre this year with Dominique Brown being replaced by Brandon Radcliff who has now been replaced by Dyer. Finally healthy the senior is showing flashes of Auburn form. In this game he finished with 134 yards and three touchdowns.

LORENZO MAULDIN'S HAMSTRING INJURY IS A CONCERN The linebacker injured his hamstring in the N.C. State game and appeared to reinjure it in the first half on Thursday. He left the game during the second quarter and at one point headed to the locker room. He did return however.

Story continues below the video

Video Coach Petrino talks about the heartbreaking loss to FSU

FLORIDA STATE'S NICK O'LEARY COULD BE A WRESTLER AND A FUMBLE RECOVERER After James Burgess' second quarter interception for Louisville O'Leary tracked him down and had trouble bringing him down. So finally he lifted Burgess in the air and essentially body slammed him. Then in the final minute of the first half O'Leary pounced on a fumbled handoff in the end zone to score the Seminoles' lone first half touchdown.

OPPOSING QUARTERBACKS SHOULD NOT THROW THE BALL ANYWHERE NEAR GEROD HOLLIMAN The junior gathered his ninth and tenth interceptions of the season. That number is tops in the nation and it ties a school record. The 10th will not go down as one of Holliman's favorite however as he fumbled the ball away on the return.

Last SlideNext Slide

HE HAD TO MISS SOMETIME Florida State kicker Robert Aguayo entered the game having made 14 of 14 field goal attempts this season and 35 of 36 in his career. But his 41 yard attempt that would have tied the game in the fourth quarter sailed wide right.

IT'S TOUGH ENOUGH TO DEFEAT FLORIDA STATE WHEN YOUR DEFENDERS AREN'T RUNNING INTO EACH OTHER With 12 48 left in the fourth quarter Florida State trailed by three points and faced a critical 3rd and 10. Winston fired a deep ball that appeared headed toward a cluster of UofL players but two of them collided with each other seemingly allowing the ball to get past them and into the hands of Ermon Lane who zipped into the end zone for a touchdown.

ACC FOOTBALL IS GOING TO BE FUN TO WATCH This felt a lot different than the American Athletic Conference didn't it PJCS was buzzing both teams were bullying and a national television audience got quite a show. And the nice thing for UofL fans is that games like this will be the new normal.

Across the city tears and memories of Menino flow

Diners at Ashley s Breakfast Shoppe on Bowdoin Street stared Thursday at his photograph on the wall as they reminisced about the irrepressible man they still call the mayor.

People downtown shouted the news to strangers. Sadness flooded an East Boston coin laundry as his image flickered across a television.

God bless him laundromat owner Alvaro Garcia said in Spanish as he folded a pair of sweat pants. The good ones don t last.

The death of former mayor Thomas M. Menino Thursday hit Boston like a punch. People winced in pain as news ricocheted from barber shops to boardrooms dry cleaners to pizza parlors.

I just closed my door and sat there and cried said Marie St. Fleur a former state representative who later served in Menino s Cabinet.

Flip through photos of the former mayor s legacy and listen to his thoughts on Boston its history education memories and future.

More coverage Photos Boston mourns Menino

He died just 297 days after walking out of City Hall. It has been more than a century since a Boston mayor passed so soon after leaving office. None served longer than his 20 years.

When people think of Boston they think of Mayor Menino said Maryanne Snow who clutched her chest outside Faneuil Hall when she heard he was gone.

To many Bostonians Menino had seemed invincible a fighter who repeatedly survived serious illnesses. As his health failed Menino pushed to keep up his relentless pace. He began walking with a cane but not without panache His walking stick was a baseball bat outfitted with a curved maple handle.

His death brought politics to a standstill. Days from the Nov. 4 election gubernatorial candidates canceled public appearances. President Obama described him as bold big hearted . . . the embodiment of the city he loved.

His successor Mayor Martin J. Walsh held a somber press conference on the steps at City Hall where behind Walsh stood scores of stone faced lawmakers city officials and government workers who got their start on Team Menino.

Governor Deval Patrick recalled his last bedside visit with the mayor Sunday when Menino could barely speak. Days earlier the mayor gave the governor memorable advice.

Don t let the knuckleheads get you down Menino told him according to Patrick.

People all over the city knew Menino who famously and prodigiously made a point of meeting ordinary residents.

They knew him best in his native Hyde Park. Judy Pais has lived across from the Meninos for more than 35 years. After Pais s father died the Meninos sent over two turkeys with all the trimmings and cut a trip short to return for the funeral.

Pais recalled the mayor rising early after storms with a snow blower to clear the sidewalks up and down Chesterfield Street.

What other mayor gets out there with a snow blower Pais said. He was a regular guy. He really really was.

They knew him at the DryDock Cafe an unassuming restaurant in the Seaport District that his presence helped make into a place for power lunches. Owner Cathy Spiropoulos sometimes saw him three times a week because she said he liked to help out the small person.

In the North End his longtime barbers Gino Colafella and Johnny Cammarata recounted a story that has become barbershop legend. Cammarata gave Menino his first mayoral haircut circa 1994 and Colafella last took scissors to his thinning hair on Oct. 4.

When he started with us he had a full head of hair. He d say Can you thin it out Colafella said. Then later he d say Don t cut too much.

The hulking edifice of Boston City Hall seemed almost to sag as red eyed secretaries janitors and parking clerks whispered the news. Sitting at a parking ticket payments counter Menino s former scheduler Joanne Wallace her eyes the same color as her red sweater could barely get the words out.

He was an unbelievable guy said Wallace who juggled Menino s nonstop schedule from 1993 to 2011. He was like a father. He was amazing.

Janitor Rocco Addessa who has cleaned City Hall for two decades teared up as he talked about his old boss.

He would whack me over the head with his cane but he was just joking around Addessa said. He was always joking with me.

Meredith Weenick first met Menino in a job interview 12 years ago as a freshly minted Harvard MBA.

The interview was brief direct and to the point said Weenick a Texan who rose to become the city s chief financial officer. He asked me only a handful of questions that were all about me proving how much I cared about Boston because that s the only thing he cared about.

At Santarpio s Pizza in East Boston the staff mourned. Menino often came by for lunch with co workers or his wife and his grandchildren. He loved the barbecue and the pizza and often took a pizza to go for his son Tommy a police officer. Often his waiter was Tony Costanza 63 a server for more than 30 years.

Costanza said Menino always graciously posed for photos with constituents. Other people made Menino happy Costanza said even if they interrupted his lunch. Usually Menino showed up smiling but if something was troubling the mayor you could read it in his face.

In those moments Costanza said he would greet Menino and then slip away to change the music on the sound system.

If you played Frank Sinatra songs he would smile from ear to ear Costanza said.

In Dorchester Menino made an annual Christmas Eve pilgrimage to Bowdoin Street walking the heart of a neighborhood that struggled with episodic violence. It made a difference the Rev. Richard Doc Conway a priest at St. Peter Parish said in an interview.

Where are you going to spend your time if you re going to go out on Christmas Eve Are you going to go up on Beacon Hill or are you going to do it here Conway said.

Jose Araujo remembered Menino s presence 11 years ago when he opened Computers for All on Geneva Avenue.

He worked all his life and he couldn t enjoy his retirement Araujo said woefully. He should have taken off a little earlier. Poor guy.

On Bowdoin Street Nicole Lewis has three photos from Menino s visits stashed in a folder behind the counter of the dry cleaner she and her husband have operated for 27 years. Lewis cannot recall seeing a politician in the neighborhood before Menino took office in 1994. But soon the sight of the mayor became expected.

It became a routine Lewis said. He was a good man.

Others recounted Menino in Brighton Roxbury and Mattapan where members of Boston s black community gathered to pay tribute to the life of a mayor who championed their causes as his own.

But for many Menino s impact was personal. In 1988 when Menino was a councilor a 22 year old City Hall security guard named Thomas Tinlin caught his eye. Menino began pushing Tinlin to finish college. The day after winning his first election as mayor Menino called. I want you to come work for me Menino told Tinlin but you have to go back to school.

Tinlin earned a bachelor s degree then a master s in public administration. He rose to become one of the longest serving transportation commissioners in Boston history.

I don t know where I would be if Tom Menino hadn t come into my life and taken a shine to me said Tinlin who is now chief of operations and maintenance for the state s roads and highways. I see him everywhere in my life.

As Thursday wore on Angela Menino returned to the home in Hyde Park that she had shared for decades with her husband.

She and a small group emerged from a silver unmarked Ford Taurus police car. His wife of nearly five decades held the Louisville Slugger cane that the former mayor had relied on for the past year.
