Profiles of some of the victims of AirAsia Flight 8501

Dec. 31 2014 Haidar Fauzie 60 holds up a picture of his daughter Khairunnisa Haidar 22 who was a flight attendant on AirAsia Flight 8501 at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya Indonesia. (AP Photo/Eileen Ng)

SURABAYA Indonesia For many it was a family trip to Singapore to ring in the new year a chance to go shopping and enjoy the city's famed restaurants. One family was going to visit their 15 year old daughter who had just begun studying at a Christian girls' school. Others were taking a familiar flight to a city they visited often for getaways.

As searchers began recovering bodies and debris from Java Sea waters relatives and loved ones recalled the stories of some of the 162 people aboard AirAsia Flight 8501 which crashed Sunday

SUDDENLY ALONE

Just 15 Chiara Natasha lost her entire family in the tragedy.

Chiara's parents and two brothers were flying to visit her in Singapore where she had just moved in early November to study on a Singapore government scholarship.

The family had sent her off from Surabaya airport less than two months ago promising to visit her to celebrate New Year's and help her settle into dormitory life at the Methodist Girls' School said her aunt Linda Patricia.

Chiara a petite teenager with long black hair had flown back to Surabaya herself on Sunday the day Flight 8501 went missing and waited at the airport Monday and Tuesday for clues about the plane praying hard that her family had survived.

News that some wreckage from the plane had been spotted and six bodies retrieved left Chiara in shock and she kept crying when relatives tried to console her her aunt said. Chiara didn't come to the airport on Wednesday.

Her older brother Nico Giovanni 17 has been studying in Singapore since last year. He had returned to Surabaya for year end holidays and was due to start his new term at the St. Andrew's Junior College said Linda who has been with her niece since her return.

Chiara's father Herumanto Tanus was a 46 year old accountant and Linda's youngest brother. Her mother Indahju Liongsih was a homemaker.

Chiara's younger brother Justin Giovanni was 9. Many Indonesians use one or two names but no family name.

We are all heartbroken and Chiara still finds it hard to accept her family members' deaths Linda said. I am thankful that the plane has been found. My only hope is that all their bodies will be found and evacuated no matter what the condition is so that we can have a proper closure.

She said Chiara has agreed to eventually return to Singapore to study as she didn't want to disappoint her parents.

In Singapore is her future Linda said.

LIVING HER DREAM

Khairunnisa Haidar 22 had always dreamed of becoming a flight attendant.

We couldn't have stopped her said her 60 year old father Haidar Fauzie. From the start we already know the risks associated with flying.

His wife cried hysterically when they heard the flight had gone missing.

They had been looking forward to their only daughter's return on Jan. 6.

Haidar said they had visited her apartment in Surabaya earlier and found that she had packed everything neatly in anticipation of her holiday back in Palembang on the island of Sumatra and also had booked her ticket home.

She had asked my wife to make her favorite fruit pudding and a local vegetable samosa filled with carrots potatoes and eggs he said. He showed a photo of his daughter on his mobile phone posing in her red AirAsia uniform in an aircraft. She is a filial beautiful and smart daughter. It is a painful loss.

Haidar said he was thankful for support from the airline and the government.

It is a natural disaster. Nobody is to be blamed he said. AirAsia is still the best.

He was calm about his loss. We accept God's will. She belongs to the Almighty. We will see her again one day he said with a smile.

MY ONLY SON

The tragedy appears to have hit Surabaya's Christian community particularly hard.

Pastor Philip Mantofa of the Mawar Sharon Church in Surabaya was shocked to discover that 41 of the 162 passengers and crew were members of his church. He said it was it not unusual for many members to travel to Singapore for holidays.

More than 100 people gathered as Mantofa led a service of prayers and songs Wednesday at the Surabaya airport.

Some things do not make sense to us but God is bigger than all this he said.

Counselors from the church hugged and prayed for relatives including Linca Gonimasela who lost her 13 year old son Adrian Fernando.

It was supposed to be a fun trip to Singapore with his aunt uncle and their 3 year old daughter. All four were aboard the plane. Linca couldn't go on the trip as she had to work.

He is my only son she said. At first he didn't want to go but later on he was persuaded to join them for the New Year holidays.

A FAVORITE FAMILY TRIP

Charly Gunawan a jovial textile businessman in his late 40s was traveling with his wife three children his daughter's fiance and the fiance's mother a group of seven.

His family frequently flew to Singapore for vacations and he had planned the trip as a special family trip for New Year's according to his brother Ifan Joko.

As work got busy toward year's end Gunawan considered skipping the trip but in the end decided to stick with the family holiday.

I know the plane has crashed but I'm still praying they are alive Ifan said. As long as their bodies are not found who knows

Gunawan liked to crack jokes had many friends and often donated sacks of rejected clothing to the poor and needy said a friend Nasaruddin.

He is a good man Ifan said.

COMMUNITY MAN

Capt. Iryanto flew F 16 fighter jets in the Indonesian air force before becoming a commercial airline pilot. He had more than 20 000 flying hours under his belt of which 6 100 were with AirAsia on the Airbus 320.

Papa come home I still need you Angela Anggi Ranastianis the pilot's 22 year old daughter pleaded on the Path social networking service late Sunday which was widely quoted by Indonesian media. Bring back my papa. Papa please come home.

He was also respected in his community which had appointed him neighborhood chief the last two years said Bagianto Djoyonegoro a friend and neighbor.

At Iryanto's house in the East Java town of Sidoarjo neighbors relatives and friends gathered earlier in the week to pray and recite the Quran to support the distraught family. Their desperate cries were so loud they could sometimes be heard outside where three LCD televisions had been set up to monitor the search for the plane.

A MOTHER DAUGHTER OUTING

Just a week before the flight accountant Lina Soetanto 24 had surprised her mother Ang Mie Jong with vases of beautiful white roses for her 52nd birthday.

Ang suffered shoulder pain for months while Lina had a painful urinary tract infection Ang's best friend Susilowati said.

They planned to go for medical check ups at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital and had saved up for the trip she said. Ang had brought her 12 year old niece Thurza Aureliza along with her for the trip.

Indonesia is crying said Pastor Hanny Lawantara of the Happy Family Center Church which Lina attended.

SUCCESSFUL CAREER SHIFT

Throughout his career as an engineer for the energy company Total Remi Plesel wanted to fly.

So a few years ago the Frenchman quit his job and learned to do just that.

He got a job with AirAsia and at the time of the accident he had earned 2 275 flying hours. He had been living in Indonesia three years his sister Renee told France's RTL radio. She last had contact with him on Dec. 26.

Aviation was his passion and he was able to make it real she said. He told me that things were going well that he'd had a good Christmas. He was happy. The rains were starting the weather was bad it was raining a lot. He was going to work the next day.

See Bruce Springsteen Lady Gaga Bruno Mars Honor Sting at Kennedy Center

By Kory Grow December 31 2014

Sting waved his fists victoriously in the air and grinned from ear to ear when Bruce Springsteen took the stage to pay tribute to the former Policeman at this year's Kennedy Center Honors broadcast Tuesday night. The other honorees of the evening were Al Green Tom Hanks Lily Tomlin and ballerina Patricia McBride. Springsteen put a gritty spin on I Hung My Head Sting's tale of manslaughter and guilt that first appeared on his 1996 album Mercury Falling and was later covered by Johnny Cash. When the E Street Band frontman played a rapid fire solo just before a gospel choir came out to sing along Sting just closed his eyes.

Related

Lady Gaga toasted Sting as well singing and playing piano for a performance of If I Ever Lose My Faith in You off the honoree's 1993 album Ten Summoner's Tales. The platinum wigged singer gave the song's middle section some extra bluesy growl after which Sting wore a blank expression that looked neither happy nor displeased. But when she announced Ladies and gentlemen Sting toward the end of her performance he couldn't hold back a laugh.

Another singer who got Sting to break his steely Britishness was Bruno Mars who performed two Police songs So Lonely and Message in a Bottle. The singer gave the former song a reverent performance that didn't stray far from the original's rocky skank. For the latter Mars put down the guitar for some impassioned Oh yeahs and welcomed a crew of backup singers the cast of Sting's Broadway musical The Last Ship which drove Sting to tears. By that point even Steven Spielberg and President Obama were singing along. Gaga Herbie Hancock and Esperanza Spalding (the latter two of whom played Sting's Fragile earlier) came out and joined Mars onstage and Meryl Streep and Springsteen came out and joined them for the finale.

Elsewhere in the broadcast Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to Green with a soulful rendition of Simply Beautiful which drew a smile from the singer. Mavis Staples and Sam Moore sang Take Me to the River to each other while Usher snapped his way through Green's enduring hit Let's Stay Together. The latter performance got the audience up and dancing including the Obamas and the evening's other honorees.

The Kennedy Center celebrates five extraordinary individuals who have spent their lives elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein said in a statement prior to the event. Of the two musical honorees he said Al Green's iconic voice stirs our souls in a style that is all his own Sting's unique voice and memorable songwriting have entertained audiences for decades.

Sting previously performed Springsteen's The Rising at the event in 2009 when the E Street Bandleader was honored. Last year's musical Kennedy Center Honors recipients included Hancock Billy Joel and Carlos Santana.

AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl Three thoughts

Charlie Strong s team stumbled to the finish line.

After looking like an improved team during a late season stretch of four wins in five games Texas disappeared in its final two games a pair of humiliating losses to TCU and Arkansas. UT s 31 7 loss Monday night in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl at the hands of the Razorbacks sends the program into the offseason searching for hope.

Here are three thoughts on the Longhorns' Texas Bowl loss

More on Texas

For full coverage of the Longhorns check out the Texas blog part of ESPN's College Football Nation. Blog

More Texas' clubhouse page ESPN.com's Big 12 blog ESPN Dallas' college blog

1. Rough day for Red River Rivals. It s amazing to take a step back and look at the state of the programs at Texas and Oklahoma. It s Dec. 30 and both programs seasons are over with neither team sniffing a New Year s Day bowl both getting blown out after not showing up for their respective bowl games and combining for 12 losses in 2014. The days of that duo which won every Big 12 title from 2004 through 2010 dominating the conference have been over for a while and Monday s results reiterated that reality.

2. Nothing else matters until Texas quarterback problem is solved. Tyrone Swoopes had his moments but he s done nothing to show Charlie Strong he s the answer at quarterback. The Longhorns finished with 59 total yards against the Razorbacks and never looked like a competent offense with Swoopes at the helm. Is Jerrod Heard the answer Well if he was he should have taken over at some point in 2014. Current quarterback commit Zach Gentry may be the guy but that s asking a lot for a true freshman to step in and change the destiny of an offense. It doesn t really matter who rises to the occasion but unless UT solves its quarterback problem Strong and the Longhorns could find themselves right back in this position at the end of next season.

3. Strong truths in the postgame presser. That should never ever happen in this program. You have to have an edge to you we don t have that right now. There are no playmakers. And those words are just a snippet of Strong s opening statement after the Texas Bowl debacle. Strong was angry about the way his team stumbled to the finish line and rightly so. UT looked like an improving team in Strong s first season until a 48 10 hammering by TCU to close the regular season followed by Monday s embarrassment. Strong's words during his postgame press conference had a lot of truth to them as he spread the blame around to pretty much everyone involved. He has a lot of work to do heading into his second year in Austin and it starts today.

Notre Dame QB Battle Will Be College Footballs Biggest Storyline of 2015

NASHVILLE Tenn. While Brian Kelly has remained steadfast that Notre Dame football s quarterback situation in the Music City Bowl matchup with LSU was about 2014 not 2015 the future implications are now impossible to overlook.

Sure Notre Dame s 31 28 victory over the No. 23 Tigers on Tuesday shatters a four game winning streak and helps soothe some of the pains of a 59 day stretch in which the Irish didn t win a game. But the unknown future at quarterback sits squarely and solely at the forefront of the discussion surrounding the 2015 Irish and possibly even the college football season at large.

USA TODAY Sports

It s an oversimplified breakdown of the 2014 season but consider this Notre Dame ascended to No. 5 in the country with a healthy defense and Everett Golson playing at a high rate. The Irish struggled when Golson struggled and when injuries ravaged the youthful defense. So how good can the Irish be next season

We want to be national champions Irish sophomore linebacker Jaylon Smith said. When we come back from break starting in the weight room. We need our leaders to step up and we need to continue to get better.

Of Notre Dame s 22 starters against LSU 20 have eligibility remaining. The Irish will lose senior running back Cam McDaniel and senior tight end Ben Koyack. Defensively graduate student cornerback Cody Riggs is out of eligibility.

This team can be great next season Irish sophomore wide receiver Will Fuller said. As a team we re only losing a couple people. We re going to be a force to be reckoned with.

In actuality so much of that of course depends upon Notre Dame s quarterback play. In his first career start redshirt freshman Malik Zaire completed 12 of 15 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. He added 96 rushing yards and a score on 22 carries. He didn t commit a turnover.

Golson played as well going 6 of 11 for 90 yards and tallying a six yard rush.

This really was just about this game Kelly said afterward. Playing both of them my focus was about winning this game and we ll figure out the quarterback situation in January. This was just utilizing both of their skills to get a win today.

Mark Humphrey/Associated Press

Before even addressing a quarterback competition it s worth asking if a two quarterback system is a viable possibility for the Irish moving forward.

I m not really sure Irish junior slot receiver C.J. Prosise said. I guess we re gonna have to see. It definitely worked out today.

Kelly is on the record as saying in a perfect world he d prefer to use one quarterback. But with two quarterbacks with different skill sets could Notre Dame survive using both Zaire and Golson in 2015

Part of playing Malik and starting him was trying to figure out how we were going to utilize him in the game and how to construct playing two quarterbacks Kelly said. So part of the making the decision to start him was to find out how we are going to move forward and effectively craft and put together a game plan for both of them.

Prosise said there aren t many drawbacks of deploying both quarterbacks even though Kelly admitted Golson profiled more as the passer and Zaire as the runner down the stretch against LSU.

Not really because Malik can still throw. Everett can still run said Prosise when asked about defenses adjusting to their roles.

An alternative is utilizing Zaire as the starting quarterback and calling on Golson in certain situations.

If Golson returns in 2015 he should be in Rees role from 2012. Reliever only in on certain passing situations. Probably best for him to go

George Dohrmann ( georgedohrmann) December 30 2014

Agree MT georgedohrmann If Golson returns he should be in Rees role from 2012. Relief in on certain passing situations. Probably best to go

Matt Fortuna ( Matt_Fortuna) December 30 2014

It s total speculation of course but that doesn t sound too appealing for Golson. It s only December but those decisions surrounding Notre Dame s quarterback quandary will be a major storyline of college football next season. Whatever happens the freshman and sophomore littered (and healthier) Irish are in a position to be vastly improved in 2015 especially if the quarterback position becomes a net positive not a net negative.

Against LSU Zaire did his job. Spearheading a run heavy offense (Notre Dame called 51 rushes against 26 passes) Zaire and the Irish piled up 263 rushing yards.

We had to have a game plan for today said Kelly when asked if Notre Dame could turn to a run based identity. We know what we have with both quarterbacks. We re going to continue to utilize Zaire s strength he s a very good runner of the football. I think it s fair to say that both of them can give us some balance in both of those areas.

Zaire said he was simply focused on being a facilitator commanding the offense and protecting the football. And in turn Notre Dame won.

NotreDame is now 16 0 under Brian Kelly when it doesn t commit a TO. Will Fuller If we re not turning the ball over no one can beat us.

Mike Monaco ( MikeMonaco_) December 31 2014

ND won because Kelly stopped trying to run HIS offense and instead ran offense ND needed to win games. Hopefully he's learned.

George Dohrmann ( georgedohrmann) December 30 2014

The fates of Zaire and Golson and Notre Dame s offensive identity are still uncertain. Is Notre Dame ready to turn to Zaire based on less than two full games of work Is Notre Dame ready to relegate Golson to backup duty Could both quarterbacks be used Will Notre Dame shift toward a run first attack Those answers could shape the college football landscape.

They re both great quarterbacks Fuller said. As long as they don t get in over their head stick with the plan and don t turn the ball over we ll be unstoppable I think.

The stakes are high.
