Mitt Romney makes the right call

And so it all ends with one final Mitt Romney flip flop.

Having thrust his way back into the GOP presidential sweepstakes three weeks ago by letting us know that despite long months of ruling it out he really did want to wage a third campaign for president Romney has now decided he won t run after all.

That s a smart decision and I have to admit one I m surprised he made.

After all we had already started hearing the usual Romney pre campaign claptrap.

To wit He and Ann were convinced he d make the best president of anyone in the GOP field. (It s hard to say which of the two is more enamored of Mitt and his putative abilities.)

And given that they thought he had a duty to the country to run.

Mitt of course always likes to couch his personal ambitions in patriotic terms even though only he and a handful acolytes truly believe that blather.

He clearly thought the country was having second thoughts that it wanted a do over.

Brush aside the usual justifications and what was obviously driving his latest presidential exploration was ego ambition and a desire for redemption. A man who thinks his own superiority is self evident Romney was surprised to get beaten no thumped by Barack Obama in 2012. He didn t want his political career to end on that sour note.

And he clearly thought the country was having second thoughts that it wanted a do over.

Make no mistake that kind of notion is important to Romney. Some months after his 1994 US Senate loss to Ted Kennedy I had lunch with him. He d taken a post election poll Romney told me and it revealed that if Massachusetts voters had known the Republicans would take over Congress in the midterms they d have elected him rather than reelecting Kennedy. His self esteem badly bruised by his loss Romney took real solace in that supposed sentiment.

For my part I was surprised he would spend good money on that kind of ego massage. However this latest episode brought to mind that post election vanity project of two decades past.

Except that this time there won t be another run.

Romney could point to surveys showing that Republican voters were receptive to seeing him try again for the presidency that said early polls often show residual support for a party s last nominee.

But he just as clearly misjudged the mood of the Republican establishment.

Mitt likes to style himself as a white knight reluctantly responding to repeated urgings that he ride to rescue.

Yet when he made it known that he was thinking of running again the reaction he got from GOP s officeholders graybeards and stalwarts didn t buttress his preferred story line.

Instead it was basically this Nice guy but he had his chance and he blew it and now it s time to move on.

And now apparently both the Republican Party and Romney will.

Which is the best course for both of them.

Poetry Celebrating the subtly incendiary Langston Hughes

Arms tired from shoveling school canceled I settle into another day alone with my favorite border collie weathering what was heralded as The Blizzard of 2015 but here in Rhode Island turned out to be just another significant snowstorm.

Only in hardest hit places like Nantucket Plymouth and Scituate in nearby Massachusetts will this one be remembered as a truly distinguished storm. Here we have 4 foot snowdrifts dry and relatively light shoveling (deep but not heavy) we ve been spared loss of electricity flooding and snow banks over our heads.

It is wind that makes an otherwise only somewhat distinguished snowstorm into something worth noticing snow blown with such force it somehow finds itself on the wrong side of front and back doors (that s my house insufficient weather stripping and a generally lax attitude toward some home repairs also to blame) wind that changes direction after a time and maybe changes again creating the most exquisite wall sculptures surfaces looking like an ocean tide coming in water fanning out to the edges.

When you ve grown up in Los Angeles where I spent my first 18 years snow and wind together can still seem like miracles of weather. I m more apt to notice them than the (un)natural occurrences I grew up much more used to earthquakes ground giving way beneath your feet and ceilings showing their instability overhead sage brush scented wildfires fueled by the Santa Ana winds followed later by mudslides hills having lost their trees and other vegetation in that year s ritual burning literally slinging houses across the sand and sometimes even into the ocean.

With earthquakes I m intimate with fire less so those wildfires mostly not close enough to do much more than sting the lungs and eyes. I ve never lived quite near enough to dry canyons or to the ocean to be affected by mudslides though I ve known many people who have. I ve spent most of the rest of my life having traded up I think to East Coast seasonal changes with the occasional threat of hurricane or snowstorm but also with snow s falling and fallen beauty to firing sugaring trees to summer days so soft and watery you say later that there weren t enough of them this year.

A second snow day. I do nothing but dig out walk with the dog the best we can one of us older (in her time) the other prematurely arthritic in one of his joints. We stumble along. The rest of the time I ve been reading and writing. Liking this having the excuse to go slower time even relishing writing another recommendation (there are many to write this time of year and one always wants to sing praises as well as possible life reduced to shoveling walking eating writing and reading gives me a little more time to do that).

I ve been reading Yusef Komunyakaa s poetry again and re reading a couple of novelists I have read and loved before and now also do again. My books are scattered all over the house though rather neatly all things considered. I am blessed to live among loved ones who do not disturb open books and the who knows what trains of thought they are prompting.

I am also thinking about this Sunday Feb. 1 the 20th Annual Langston Hughes Poetry Reading from 1 to 3 30 p.m. at RISD s Metcalf Auditorium facilitated so many years now by the devoted Anne Clanton with assists from many among them Deborah Clemons educator in public programs at the RISD Museum April Brown and (so much depends upon) Ray Rickman. After many years of being always this time of year in Vermont at Goddard College attending winter residencies while teaching in the MFA Program in Interdisciplinary Arts I am actually home gearing up for my first Langston Hughes Poetry Reading (criminal I know).

I am thinking of slightly incendiary Hughes the subtly transgressive poet who could publish poems critical of his culture without hate mongers and other bigots seeming to know it. Some of his most insightful poems about race are simply questions in a series

Question 1

When the old junk man Death

Comes to gather up our bodies

And toss them into the sack of oblivion

I wonder if he will find

The corpse of a white multi millionaire

Worth more pennies of eternity

Than the black torso of

a Negro cotton picker

The only two things not contemporary in the poem are the words millionaire and Negro. Billionaires and more progressive ideas concerning the naming of identities being what they are two minute details seem to have lost their relevance. Still I can t help hearing in Hughes use of the word Negro (he uses it always famously in his first published poem The Negro Speaks of Rivers ) a tone of great irony there is no sense of belonging in the term it is an imposed given word not one freely chosen.

In the cadence down beated Than the black torso of/a Negro cotton picker the poet surfaces at once the sound of degradation and an insistence on equality. Pennies of eternity is one of those inspired phrases one always gets in a Hughes poem come judgment day nobody s worth any more than anyone else or if so by only cents. When it comes to race seemingly insurmountable challenges that Langston Hughes faced in his time the challenging times we live in ourselves as we witness riots murders or accidental deaths (depending upon whom you ask) and still widespread discrimination death puts everyone finally on an equal footing.

I love Hughes sneakiness will a whole white body (a corpse ) be worth anything close to just part of one (a torso ). Growing up Hughes poetry was in the water even in Los Angeles but maybe it takes a stark white snowstorm to give it the proper relief. Among other things he teaches us what it means to write always upon and against a white background. I am thinking of Theme for English B from his book Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951 deep thanks to my former teacher Arnold Rampersad for finally bringing out The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes (in 1994 ) making the dating of both individual poems and collections possible.

Theme for English B

The instructor said

Go home and write

a page tonight.

And let the page come out of you

Then it will be true.

I wonder if it s that simple

I am twenty two colored born in Winston Salem.

I went to school there then Durham then here

to this college on the hill above Harlem.

I am the only colored student in my class.

The steps from the hill lead down to Harlem

through a park then I cross St. Nicholas

Eighth Avenue Seventh and I come to the Y

the Harlem Branch Y where I take the elevator

up to my room sit down and write this page

Hughes is doing what his friend and sometime collaborator Zora Neale Hurston referred to as finding places with the tongue in your mouth. This poet has placed himself according to race and class time of life as well as geography. Certainly not many students at Columbia were then living at the Y the Y in Harlem as the poet would have you know not to be confused with the one on the Upper West Side. Differences as well as similarities Hughes later says in the poem will persist.

Well I like to eat sleep drink and be in love.

I like to work read learn and understand life.

I like a pipe for a Christmas present

or records Bessie bop or Bach.

I guess being colored doesn t make me not like

the same things other folks like who are other races.

So will my page be colored while I write

Being me it will not be white.

Hughes pipe smoker Bach as well as bop listener goes on to assert that he and his white teacher are part of each other because that s American though neither may like that truth. I can see him shaking his head now like my own grandmother while saying something like mmmhmm a fact s a fact.

As I learn from you

I guess you learn from me

although you are older and white

and somewhat more free.

This is my page for English B.

I am smiling now as I read this poem again. Even though I have no way of knowing whether or not his white teacher ever saw this page I am still struck by the bravery of a young black man speaking truth to power finding himself a foreigner on the starkly white Ivy League campus in a city he was growing to love.

He would only last the year (later he finished his education at Lincoln University a university founded by members of the 62nd Colored Infantry following the Civil War) but this paper is a testament that he still learned what he needed to learn during his brief time at Columbia a deep understanding of the ambivalences and intimacies and hypocrisies surrounding race in America an understanding that is of course also surprisingly (or not surprisingly) contemporary.

Happy Birthday Langston (as if I m saying it to my own son Gil who carries this beloved poet in his own middle name and often hears it lovingly from me instead of his first name). So glad to have you still among us.

Shake Shack debuts on NYSE price rises dramatically

shakeshack/via Twitter In celebration of their going public today Shake Shack is giving out free food until 2 p.m. outside the New York Stock Exchange. Line 'em up we're serving free Shack 'til 2pm outside the New York SHACK Exchange nyse the company wrote on Twitter.

Turns out the real golden arches are at Shake Shack.

The upscale burger chain launched from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park made a sizzling Wall Street debut on Friday with stock prices more than doubling in value.

For Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer that made for a really happy meal. His 21% stake in the company was at one point worth nearly $400 million.

The initial public offering came with a free hamburger handout outside the New York Stock Exchange with scores of Shake Shack fans standing in the January cold for a taste.

From food trucks stationed outside the Wall Street mainstay Shake Shack handed out free sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches before 11 a.m. and plans to serve free burgers until 2 p.m. The New York based company will also give out swag at locations across Manhattan it said.

Inside NYSE investors were going crazy for the burger joint as stock prices soared within minutes.

Five million shares were sold Thursday at $21 apiece giving Shake Shack a $105 million initial public offering. By the end of trading Friday the new stock was valued at $45.90 per share.

The offering raised the value of the chaim to about $ 1.6 billion the New York Times reported.

Underwriters had set an expected price range of $17 19 per share raised from an initial $14 $16 due to strong demand Reuters reported.

CEO Randy Garutti was thrilled by the stock showing and said the numbers indicated a change in the way Americans view fast food.

My kids will grow up in a generation of people who isn t going to see fast food in the way it s been seen over the last few decades he told Bloomberg Television. And those people generally want to go to a place like Shake Shack.

The burger chain is known for using hormone free and antibiotic free beef along with natural ingredients. The burgers are also cooked to order and its thick milkshakes draw raves.

Shake Shack's cult following means there are often massive lines at Manhattan and Chicago locations but Friday's queues appeared extra long.

shakeshack/via Twitter Hamburger chain Shake Shack went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SHAK Friday. The NYSE hung a banner over the building in honor of the chain's debut.

The chain attracts a relatively affluent clientele which spends roughly $30 for a meal for two considerably more than diners spend at struggling fast food giant McDonald's.

The hot dog cart owned by Meyer s Union Square Hospitality Group opened in 2001 and exploded into the current international phenomenon with 63 locations in nine countries.

The company has said it plans to open 10 U.S. company operated restaurants each year and could eventually grow to at least 450 locations.

While Shake Shack has been slower to add restaurants its domestic average annual sales of $5 million per location for 2013 were about double Chipotle's.

J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley were lead underwriters for the IPO.

the Rise of Found Footage Teen Movies

Paramount Pictures

When Project Almanac's trailer first surfaced last year skeptics and gimmick weary viewers let out something of a collective groan. The Michael Bay produced teen driven film lies at the ambitious intersection of the time travel and found footage genres The former boasts a long list of well loved forbears including Back to the Future Interstellar Donnie Darko Looper Groundhog Day Time Cop and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure many of which Project Almanac references in the film. Time travel has a kind of universal appeal it plays on audiences' desires for puzzle like narrative complexity and what if fantasies.

The Formula That's Ruining Teen Movies

On the other hand since its mainstream introduction with The Blair Witch Project in 1999 found footage hasn't aged quite as well. Long associated with the horror genre the descriptor found footage is over used and poorly defined while the movies to which it's attached are rarely well executed. The criticisms lobbed at most found footage films consistently echo those recently and perhaps fairly leveled at Project Almanac chiefly that the label is an excuse to make a relatively low budget movie with lazy storytelling shallow characters and obnoxiously shaky camera work. Nevertheless the disjointed and deeply self conscious nature of the found footage format works feels surprisingly honest and timely in teen centered films like this one.

The premise of the film (formerly and awkwardly known as Welcome to Yesterday) is fairly simple Nerdy but attractive high school genius David Raskin (Jonny Reston) gets into his dream college and wants to make a last ditch effort to win a scholarship by coming up with a brilliant science experiment. The discovery of a strange home video from David's seventh birthday leads him his sister Christina (Virginia Gardner) and his friends Adam (Allen Evangelista) and Quinn (Sam Lerner) to find a time machine prototype left behind by David's father a brilliant scientist who died a decade earlier. After some experimenting they get the machine to work and go back in time to do various young people things (win the lottery go to Lollapalooza) but inadvertently and invariably they cause a lot of bad tragic stuff to happen along the way.

From a purely technical and aesthetic standpoint the found footage style does almost nothing for the movie raising more questions than it intends to answer. Like others of its ilk Project Almanac can't seem to make up its mind about committing to the found footage approach or not (Where is the mood setting music coming from Why are there multiple POV shots Why did Christina start obsessively filming way before her brother told her to start documenting everything ) And for those who watch the trailer Project Almanac will be a sci fi film with few surprises. The kids use their temporal relocation device for fairly innocuous expected purposes to win the validation or love of a super popular/hot classmate to re do a chemistry class to punish a bully to be seen as cool in the eyes of their high school.

But it's in this context Project Almanac as an earnest yet flawed depiction of teen wishes and fears that the filmmaking approach takes on new significance. The genre dramatizes the identity formation that goes on during the digital technology glutted adolescent years which are filled with screens and captured images whether from smartphones cameras vlogging or pictures on social media. While earlier in the 20th century popular culture more frequently imagined the camera as a voyeuristic tool (see Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window) the reality of recording has been far more normalized today even if it hasn't lost its insidious potential. For the most part characters in films like Project Almanac act like themselves unfazed by the camera ever trained on them.

Others such as The Dissolve's Scott Tobias have also noted the distinctly modern appeal of found footage in lending a sense of verisimilitude. But it's a truthfulness that has particular resonance with the teenage experience. In Project Almanac there isn't just the main audience POV camera. There are mirrors Facebook photos Instagram videos many of which capture the teens doing things they don't remember because they happened in an alternate time universe. The film's found footage approach emphasizes this weird alienation not as deeply creepy in the way that horror films tend to but as a fairly normal part of being a digitally connected teen. (To understand this sense of alienation all you need to do is go to your earliest Facebook posts or your MySpace or your LiveJournal).

Teens face the added anxiety of literally seeing themselves as others see them.

Teens already notorious for their self consciousness and broader concern with social acceptance face the added anxiety of literally seeing themselves as others see them. This idea of split selves made more fantastical as when David sees his older self reflected in the mirror at his own seventh birthday party serves a narrative purpose in a time travel story. Video cameras in effect create two different types of realities the lived experience of the person being recorded and the image that will be captured for posterity. The filmmaking style inadvertently highlights the role screens play how David and his friends view themselves as people uncool girlfriend less.

Found footage films add an extra layer of self awareness both on the part of the subjects and on the part of the audience. The characters in the recordings know they're being recorded and the audience knows this too. But for the teens this is no different than with YouTube videos or Instagram selfies or Snapchats. Hence the awkward glance David casts toward the camera as his crush Jessie (Sofia Black D'Elia) inches closer to him. Or when a more transparently performative aspect creeps in to how the characters behave as when Christina turns to the camera slyly and pulls her shirt off to reveal a bikini top while at Lollapalooza. If much of this feels grating or forced it's at least comforting to know that there's some truth to it.

Recall found footage's ubiquity in the horror genre where the original idea is that the people we're watching are no longer around to tell their stories and all that's left is the recording. Many of these films Project Almanac included don't quite go so far as to kill off all their characters but the recording is meant to serve more as a document a kind of digital memory for the teens themselves. In a pics or it didn't happen age where anything that matters should be preserved and shared this intention is all the more sympathetic. Which perhaps explains the recent spread of found footage to teen movies such as Project X Chronicle Earth to Echo and of course horror films like the atrocious Megan Is Missing or the upcoming Unfriended. The genre may feel worn out but found footage seems to have found a new and natural home in youth driven films.

UFC 183 results photos Emotional Anderson Silva takes care of Nick Diaz

LAS VEGAS In his first fight since a bid to regain his middleweight title ended in a horrific broken leg ex champ Anderson Silva kicked over five rounds and outpointed a game Nick Diaz.

The final scores were 49 46 and 50 45 twice for Silva (34 6 MMA 17 2 UFC) who jogged around the octagon in celebration following the decision but then broke down in tears and was helped up by Diaz (26 10 MMA 7 7 UFC).

Thank you god for giving me one more chance for being here said Silva after the fight. Thank you my family my kids and my friends my real friends.

It s a very important moment for me for my whole family and for all Brazilians. I went through a lot of suffering in the past year and I didn t think I could come back.

The middleweight bout was the main event of today s UFC 183 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on pay per view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Silva ranked No. 6 in USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie s MMA middleweight rankings and a 3 to 1 favorite encountered an opponent just as willing to feint and fake as he was. Diaz went so far as to lay down on the mat and freeze in place as the ex champ circled and waited to engage. At times the two looked more like they were voguing than fighting.

It was an entertaining start to a fight rife with questions about how Silva who is three months shy of his 40th birthday would perform after such an injury and how Diaz 31 would perform after he left the sport 20 months ago following a decision loss to now former welterweight champ Georges St Pierre at UFC 158.

As the fight wore on however the two middleweights did far less clowning and instead circled each other attacking the legs and sporadically firing off combinations. Silva s speed and dexterity appeared unaffected by his layoff and his skills as a counter striker remained. As Diaz moved forward he snuck in accurate punches that scored.

Silva cornered Diaz on several occasions grabbing the throat and looking for a finishing blow. But Diaz proved resilient to his attacks firing hooks in close and covering up to weather the storm. Several one two combinations appeared to anger the former champ as he chased down a counter.

The most consistent damage Silva did was to Diaz s legs which he attacked with a thrusting side kick that angered the Stockton Calif. native. Diaz offered his chin midway through the fifth frame as he bled generously under his left eye from a Silva kick. There would be no finish however.

Nick is the best said Silva. I ve seen him for a long time. It s the first time in my life I had a guy mentally strong punches strong the kicks strong. Thanks to Nick for the opportunity.

Asked what was next for his career Silva was uncertain despite indications before the fight that a win over Diaz would earn him another fight with current middleweight champ Chris Weidman who knocked him out at UFC 162 and then broke his leg by checking a kick at UFC 168.

I go back home talk to my kids and I don t know Silva said. Maybe I come back. I don t know.

Silva snaps a two fight win streak while Diaz loses his third straight fight in the UFC.

I don t know how he wins on damage said Diaz afterward. If you lay down in front of me I m going to come and get you. I feel like I won every round. I love Anderson Silva he s a great guy. This scoring winning game goes back and forward. These judges they don t like my attitude out here sometimes.

Japan wakes up to bad news about Kenji Goto

31 January 2015 Last updated at 22 36 ET By Yuko Kato BBC News Tokyo Newspapers brought out special editions on Sunday morning with news of Kenji Goto

Japan woke up early on Sunday morning to the news of the death of Kenji Goto whose apparent killing was shown in a video released by Islamic State militants.

Many first learned the sad news on Twitter as they did when the hostage situation broke initially although newspapers were also quick to bring out special editions on Sunday morning.

For many in Japan this has been a tragedy unfolding before their eyes on social media so it was only natural that they would respond on Twitter.

But the response has been mixed as it has been since the beginning.

There is of course grief anger commiseration.

Many have joined in calls not to look at images of Kenji Goto's killing but to show images of Mr Goto as he did what he excelled in reporting on the lives of ordinary people caught in the crossfire caught in a humanitarian crisis.

Junichi Goto's response is seen as dignified and noble

Many people are asking news outlets not to create a media circus around the families of Mr Goto and another Japanese hostage Haruna Yukawa who was beheaded a week ago.

The reaction of Kenji Goto's older brother. Junichi has been widely praised on social media.

He began by thanking the Japanese government the country of Japan and the world for their support before concentrating on Kenji himself.

As his older brother I wish Kenji was able to come home and thank every one himself and I'm most aggrieved this is not to be. I am proud of Kenji's professional achievements but as his brother I think this time his actions were careless Junichi Goto 55 told broadcaster NHK.

His words are exactly the kind of family response Japanese considers dignified and noble in this kind of situation touching on the very notion of Japaneseness .

Others are angry at Japanese TV stations that are repeatedly showing snippets from the murder video calling it a direct terror threat against the Japanese people.

Overseas concerns

While many share the anger expressed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe some have pointed out that he only touched briefly upon the grief suffered by the two victims' families and failed to refer to their achievements.

PM Shinzo Abe was visibly moved by the news but some Japanese have been highly critical of his position

They highlight a contrast with a statement issued by the White House in which President Barack Obama said Through his reporting Mr Goto courageously sought to convey the plight of the Syria people to the outside world.

Ever since the news of the hostage situation broke those who were already critical of the government have attacked the prime minister over his handling of the case.

Mr Abe admitted during a Diet session last Tuesday that the government knew of Mr Goto's kidnap in November well before the general election in December.

Some see the prime minister's recent trip to the Middle East including Israel where he pledged $200m in non military aid for the anti IS coalition as the immediate catalyst that gave the militants an opportunity to make their threats.

There has been popular criticism of the current administration's efforts to change the interpretation of Japan's pacifist constitution to allow the exercise of the right of collective self defence abroad.

Now there are concerns that the government might use the killings and renewed IS threats against Japan to step up those efforts and make it possible to send the Self Defence Forces abroad in a military capacity to participate in the fight against terrorism.

Unsympathetic voice

The majority of online opinion in Japan had been urging all steps to be taken to achieve the safe release of Mr Yukawa and Mr Goto while being fully aware of the dangers of satisfying demands from militants.

Mrs Dewi dismissed Kenji Goto as a huge nuisance

On the other hand there were some that admonished the hostages saying they went at their own risk.

Most notably the famous television personality Mrs Dewi the Japanese wife of Indonesia's first President Sukarno wrote in her blog on Thursday that the hostages were a huge nuisance to Japan and to Jordan and that if possible she would tell Mr Goto to kill himself .

This has created a storm of criticism against this TV pundit known for her strong and often extreme opinions but more than 11 000 people have pressed the Like button for this blog article on Facebook.

However there has been an effort on social media as well as in the traditional media to stress how the small Muslim community in Japan is in solidarity with the hostages and has condemned the barbarous acts of IS.

On 22 January soon after the initial hostage news broke the Islamic Centre Japan released a statement calling for the release of the hostages and condemning ISIS.

This has been Liked over 8 000 times and shared more than 4 000 times on Facebook.

Duke Upsets Virginia On The Road 69 63

Every so often a game comes along that really shows what Duke basketball is all about. The win at Virginia was definitely in that class.

Shopping Amazon Start here help DBR Celebrate Coach K's 1K Write us

After the big win in New York the week hadn't gone so well a loss to Notre Dame in a winnable game then the ejection of Rasheed Sulaimon...Virginia was supposed to be more pain.

Yet it wasn't.

Duke took it at Virginia in the first half just running and running and getting ahead of that very potent defense.

In the second it was a different story the Cavaliers began to assert themselves and built a double digit lead about seven and change into the half.

And it seemed briefly like Duke might buckle.

Yet with 8 31 it was a six point game at 47 41. And when Virginia built the lead back to nine at 56 47 things were again not looking so good.

But Duke dug in. Tyus Jones converted a three point play then Quinn Cook hit a three pointer.

Jahlil Okafor tipped a basket in to cut the lead to 58 55.

Quinn Cook and Matt Jones each hit a three Cook at 3 22 and Jones at 2 47 to cut the lead to 63 61.

Even on television the mood change in John Paul Jones was palpable.

Justise Winslow had a steal and a layup followed by another three from Cook to put Duke up 66 63.

And then came a sequence which may haunt Virginia's Mike Tobey for awhile missed free throw. Offensive rebound. Missed chippy. And after a jump ball call a missed layup.

Then with 11 seconds left the dagger Tyus Jones hit a three to put his Blue Devils up six.

That was it. Virginia got off another three but Malcolm Brogdon missed and Duke won 69 63.

What a gutty performance by the Blue Devils. Let's be clear Virginia is a tremendous college basketball team. They're not just superior they're really really good.

So beating them counts for a lot. Beating them after losing to Notre Dame counts for more. And beating them after dropping Rasheed Sulaimon counts for even more.

Like most everyone we don't know what happened there but we have compassion for Rasheed but how the team moves forward was (and remains) critical.

We thought that Winslow with his injuries perhaps receding really re emerged in this one.

If you think of it as sort of a trade or a tradeoff a healthy and hale Winslow is more than compensation for the loss of Sulaimon.

We also thought that Grayson Allen pressed into more minutes out of necessity acquitted himself well.

And it's worth noting that despite Virginia's intense coverage of Okafor the kid still hit 5 7.

But really the story of the game aside from Winslow's re emergence was the play particularly late of Cook and Jones.

We heard not too long ago from someone on TV who should know better that a team can't win a national title with small guards.

Quick someone call UConn's Ryan Boatwright (6 0) and Shabazz Napier (6 1) and tell them to give the rings back.

You certainly can't win without talent. But talent without heart and execution is orphaned.

Duke's talent is not really questioned. After this past week with the comeback against St. John's a near miss at Notre Dame and a remarkable win at Virginia under some duress we think we can safely say this the Blue Devils are playing on a different level one much more defined by heart than mere talent.

It was a remarkably gutty win over a team that can go toe to toe with anyone in the country including Kentucky. That's a great sign for the Blue Devils as the team continues to move from being talented to being accomplished.

Junior Seau Jerome Bettis lead eight member Hall of Fame class

Junior Seau s enthusiasm was infectious during this 18 year NFL career. (Lenny Ignelzi/Associated Press)

PHOENIX Late linebacker Junior Seau a standout for his hometown San Diego Chargers and later a respected veteran and Super Bowl participant with the New England Patriots led an eight member class elected Saturday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Seau was joined by running back Jerome Bettis wide receiver Tim Brown defensive lineman Charles Haley offensive linemen Will Shields and Mick Tingelhoff and front office architects Ron Wolf and Bill Polian.

Seau was widely regarded as the one automatic selection in this year s class. Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said during the week that he could not imagine a Hall of Fame without Seau who was in his first year of eligibility.

It s obviously got to happen Belichick said earlier in the week.

Seau was a 12 time Pro Bowl selection during a career that included the Chargers Miami Dolphins and Patriots. He was named to the all decade team of the 1990s and was the NFL s defensive player of the year in 92.

The one word that comes to me when I think of Junior in life and football is passion Belichick said. He s a very passionate guy lot of energy lot of enthusiasm.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said during the week he had no doubt that Seau would be elected.

He was a phenomenal player teammate friend Brady said. His attitude was infectious. He brought enthusiasm every day to practice. He showed up in the room and he d be the first person there at 6 in the morning on the treadmill running going into his 18th year in the league.

He had a love for life and he s missed by all of his family and friends and certainly by me and the guys that had a chance to be around him. He was a special person. If he can t make it nobody can. He s truly one of a kind. It was a privilege playing with him Brady said.

Seau died of a self inflicted gunshot wound in May 2012 at age 43.

This is a huge honor for our family said Seau s son Tyler. It s definitely with a heavy heart because it should be him.

Bettis was a six time Pro Bowler for the Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the sixth leading rusher in NFL history with 13 662 yards and ended his career in glorious fashion with a Super Bowl triumph with the Steelers to cap the 2005 season.

To think a little fat kid from Detroit who had never played football until high school could ascend to this level at no time did I ever feel I had the ability to get to the Hall of Fame Bettis said.

Brown has the sixth most receiving yards in league history with 14 934. He played for the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also was a game breaking return man.

You know you have to wait your turn Brown said. I came into this year hoping for better things and am delighted to be sitting here.

Haley was a ferocious pass rusher and is the only five time Super Bowl winner in league history. He had three of those victories with the Dallas Cowboys and two with the San Francisco 49ers. He had 100 1/2 career sacks.

I played with some of the greatest men . To me that s what makes this special Haley said.

Shields reached 12 straight Pro Bowls as a guard for the Kansas City Chiefs and never missed a game in 14 seasons.

Tingelhoff a center never missed a game in 17 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and was named all NFL or all pro seven times.

Wolf built Super Bowl teams with the Raiders and Packers and was perhaps best known for making the trade that got quarterback Brett Favre to Green Bay. He also was in the front offices of the Buccaneers and New York Jets.

My induction is the result of a lot of people that made this happen Wolf said.

Polian was a six time NFL executive of the year with the Buffalo Bills Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts.

It s really overwhelming Polian said. Never in a million years would I have thought I d ever be here.
