Video After UFC 183 Nick Diaz says hes tired of losing fights

LAS VEGAS Given the circumstances Nick Diaz said he s not all that unhappy with how he fought at UFC 183. However he also admits he s getting sick and tired of losing fights.

I m kind of tired of being a loser Diaz told MMAjunkie at Saturday s post UFC 183 news conference. I m still here but I m losing all these fights.

On Saturday Diaz (26 10 MMA 7 7 UFC) faced Anderson Silva (34 6 MMA 18 2 UFC) in the main event of UFC 183 at Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena. It was Diaz s first fight in nearly two years after electing to sit on the sidelines following a March 2013 loss to George St Pierre.

The fight didn t exactly produce the fireworks many expected from the two striking specialists but Diaz s sharp counters seemed to leave Silva unwilling to over extend himself. Of course that immediately encouraged Diaz to start talking trash and flailing around even dropping to the floor at one point to mock his opponent.

I kind of lose my sh t in there when people do that Diaz said. I think he probably knows that. But I could see his punches coming a mile away. The more he punched the more he was going to end up with the sh t end of the stick so he wasn t going to punch or anything.

Diaz admitted he struggled with several challenges heading into the matchup. His left arm required cortisone shots Diaz said limiting his punching power for quite some time. He also explained there was unrest in his camp which seems to be a constant struggle for the former Strikeforce champ.

Despite the loss which was one sided on the judges cards Diaz s fans seemed content with his effort and the brawler earned healthy applause for his effort.

Just 31 years old Diaz seems destined for more big fights but his love hate relationship with the sport leaves that anything but a certainty. Asked to speculate on his next move Diaz admitted he needed more time.

Sure fans are tuning in but with three consecutive losses haunting him Diaz isn t interested in any participation awards.

I m doing well though as far as this being a job versus the other guys that are out there Diaz said. So yeah I m happy I guess to put on a show for these fans. So I don t know what to make of it right now. I don t know what people think either.

Prop bets are as big a part of the experience during the Super Bowl as the game itself. The lock of the night is how long it will take Idina Menzel to finish the National Anthem with the over/under being set at two minutes and one second.

It's not an unreasonable line especially since David Barron of The Houston Chronicle noted on Twitter that there is some precedent for Menzel performing the National Anthem at a sporting event

Even though the MLB All Star Game rendition was shorter than the Super Bowl odds this is a much bigger stage and will afford her the perfect opportunity to use those Broadway tuned pipes to hold the a in Brave to push her past the 121 second mark.

I take back what I said about the lock of the night as the references to deflated balls seems unusually low considering the amount of conversation around it over the last two weeks. The oddsmakers did buy themselves some leeway by saying it had to come during the broadcast which presumably means everything after the coin toss.

Still the second Tom Brady steps on the field it's going to be one of the first things that gets mentioned. Take the over and don't be shocked if it happens in the first two minutes of New England's first offensive drive.

The Bill Belichick hoodie bet is a difficult one to forecast because he's such an enigma that you never know what's going through his head.

However just looking at recent trends signs point to the Patriots head coach going with cutoff sleeves. In New England's two playoff games at home which were played in cold and for the AFC Championship Game rainy weather Belichick had full sleeves.

Going back even further the last time Belichick had cutoff sleeves was in Week 15 against Miami. The temperature at Gillette Stadium on that December day was a balmy 43 degrees per Pro Football Reference.com.

The Super Bowl will be played in the controlled environment at the University of Phoenix Stadium which features a retractable roof. Belichick will have no reason not to cut the sleeves off his hoodie on Sunday.

MVP Pick Marshawn Lynch Seahawks

Of the possible MVP picks for Seattle in this year's Super Bowl Marshawn Lynch is right at the top of the list. Picking quarterbacks is easy but Russell Wilson doesn't fit the traditional mold of a Super Bowl MVP because he's not great from the pocket and needs to scramble to make plays.

The Seahawks are at their best when Lynch is carrying them. He's also a nightmare for opposing defenses to bring down especially after first contact and in the second half.

Per John McTigue of ESPN Stats Information Lynch has been a first down machine and yards after contact monster in 2014

Although he gained more yards from scrimmage in 2012 (1 786) than he did in 2014 (1 673) he made the most of his touches this season. Lynch gained a first down on 26 percent of his offensive touches this season the highest of his career.

Of course Lynch is best known for his physical running style. He averaged 2.53 yards after contact on 280 rushes this season. ESPN Stats Info s yards after contact data goes to 2009 and in that time there have been two instances of a player rushing 200 times and averaging more yards after contact and that includes Adrian Peterson s MVP campaign in 2012.

Jay Clemons of Fox Sports South did bring up two stats involving Lynch that suggest something will have to give on Sunday

Of his last 11 outings Seahawks tailback Marshawn Lynch (183 total yards one TD in the NFC title game) has racked up 100 total yards and/or one score nine times.

On the flip side of his five career outings against the Patriots Lynch (original draftee of the Bills) has only crossed the above threshold just once.

The second half is when Seattle makes its money. Lynch has been dynamite after halftime all year including getting 146 of his 183 total yards against Green Bay in the last 30 plus minutes (including overtime).

Justin Forsett ran all over New England in the divisional round with 129 yards on 24 carries. Lynch will have a similar stat line going for 114 yards and two touchdowns (one receiving) on 23 carries.

In addition to his prowess on the field there's also a part of everyone that wants to see Lynch win the MVP award just to see what will happen when he steps up to the podium to get his trophy. The Super Bowl MVP is also slated to take part in a press conference with Roger Goodell on Monday morning.

Besides making complete sense as the Super Bowl MVP there's also the humorous side story that would come from Lynch winning the honor. Let's hope it happens just for one more day of drama when Beast Mode has to step in front of the microphone.

ISIS Beheads Japanese Hostage Kenji Goto

TOKYO The so called Islamic State has released a video showing a black clad executioner and what is believed to be the decapitated body of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto. The latest atrocity at the hands of the group known widely as ISIS or ISIL came after long days of ostensible negotiations with Japan and with Jordan first for a ransom of $200 million then for the freedom of a convicted woman terrorist. The final deadline expired on Thursday at sunset in the Syrian and Iraqi territories now held by ISIS.

The fate of a Jordanian pilot captured by ISIS in December whose life also was threatened as part of the terror group s public demands remains unknown.

According to Japan s National Broadcasting Network NHK the video was released on Feb. 1 shortly after 5 00 a.m. Japan time.

The video opened with the title in English A Message To the Government of Japan. A man dressed in an orange prisoner uniform who appears to be Goto is on his knees among some barren hills and standing beside him is a man with a knife dressed in the black outfit of a militant speaking with a working class British accent the same staged scene first made infamous when the American hostages James Foley and Steven Sotloff were beheaded last year.

The Japanese government is rushing to confirm the authenticity of the video. Sources close to the Japanese cabinet told The Daily Beast that they considered the possibility the video was real to be high but not 100 percent confirmed.

The killing if such it is follows on a drama that stretches back to last October when Goto went into ISIS controlled territory to try to win the freedom of another Japanese Haruna Yukawa a deeply disturbed young man who had worked briefly with Goto and imagined that he could be a freelance security contractor. Ultimately both men were held hostage but little was heard from them in public and the Japanese government as most governments do tried to keep any negotiations secret.

Then in mid January on a six day tour of the Middle East Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged $200 million in aid to countries fighting ISIS. Three days later on January 20 ISIS released a video of Goto and Yukawa and demanded $200 million in ransom. The 72 hour deadline passed with no payment and a new video was posted of a still picture showing Goto holding up another still photograph of Yukawa s severed head resting on top of his dead body. The voice of a man claiming to be Goto changed the ransom demand dropping the question of money and instead calling for Jordan to release Sajida al Rishawi who was part of a suicide bombing operation that killed scores of people in Amman hotels in 2005.

On January 27 ISIS released another video changing the context of the drama once again. This time the still photograph of Goto showed him holding a picture of Muadh al Kasasbeh a Jordanian pilot who was captured in December when his plane crashed over ISIS infested territory. Goto said that if al Rishawi was not freed by sunset local time on Thursday al Kasasbeh would be killed and he would be as well.

The Jordanian government announced it would free al Rishawi if its pilot was returned making no mention of Goto. But it demanded proof that the pilot was still alive and none was forthcoming.

As the deadline approached Goto s wife Rinko made a statement pleading for his life and the life of the pilot.

My husband and I have two very young daughters she said on a recording released by the Rory Peck Trust. Our baby girl was only three weeks old when Kenji left. I hope our oldest daughter who is just two will get to see her father again. I want them both to grow up knowing their father.

With luck they will never see the new video which follows exactly the same format used when Foley and Sotloff were killed except that no other hostage is presented on camera as next in line as was the case with the other murders. The fact that there is no image of the Jordanian pilot suggests that he may indeed have died some time ago.

In the video Jihadi John as the executioner has come to be known in the British press stands beside Goto with a drawn knife which he uses to gesture as he says To the Japanese government you like your foolish allies in the satanic coalition have yet to understand that we by Allah s grace are an Islamic caliphate with authority and power an entire army thirsty for your blood.

Goto is silent and stoic as his masked murderer continues his diatribe on behalf of his make believe state thirsty not only for blood but for recognition Abe because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war this knife will not only slaughter Kenji but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin.

As in some previous ISIS videos after the diatribe ends the killer puts the knife to the victim s throat the image fades to black and then a still photograph appears with the severed head resting atop the dead man s body.

The video ends with unintentional irony citing the Arabic invocation bismallah al rahman al rahim In the name of God most Gracious most Compassionate.

The Life of Kenji Goto

A video purportedly released by the Islamic State on Saturday appeared to show the beheading of Kenji Goto a Japanese journalist whom militants had captured in Syria and held hostage. The death of Goto came one week after ISIS executed Haruna Yukawa a fellow Japanese citizen who had traveled to Syria as a private security contractor. The two murders followed ISIS demands of $200 million in ransom from the Japanese government as well as the release of Sajida Mubarak al Rishawi a woman imprisoned in Jordan for her role in a 2005 failed suicide bombing.

Goto's kidnapping elicited much interest in Japan. Since Taku Nishimae a New York based Japanese filmmaker launched a Facebook page entitled I am Kenji Goto an homage to the Je Suis Charlie campaign that followed the Charlie Hebdo attacks nearly 25 000 people have liked the page. Over 1 000 people have posted photographs of themselves showing solidarity with Kenji on the page.

The outpouring of sympathy for Goto was unusual in a country that traditionally shuns citizens caught up in dangerous conflicts. But Kenji Goto was not an ordinary citizen. As a journalist Goto traveled across war torn countries like Liberia Iraq and Kosovo producing documentaries with his own money that showed daily life in the world's worst conflict zones. In a moving post written for the Committee to Project Journalists on Friday The Economist's Heny Tricks described Goto's approach to covering war

Instead of focusing on who is winning or losing he tells the stories of ordinary people especially children who are forced to endure conflict and the horrors surrounding them. It is their resilience that inspires him he says. When you ask how he reaches the dangerous places he reports from he says he follows the footsteps of normal people getting on with their lives. They show him the way.

As with last week's death of Haruna Yukawa Goto's beheading appears likely to catalyze a national conversation in Japan over the country's role in foreign conflict. But Goto's true legacy may instead be inspiring his countrymen to recognize and combat human suffering in countries far from their own. In a Japan seemingly destined to engage more with the outside world in the years ahead this legacy is hardly insignificant.

UFC 183 Silva decisions Diaz in return

LAS VEGAS In a time of injury plagued turmoil for the Ultimate Fighting Championship there are two bright spots tonight Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz both make their returns to the Octagon after extensive layoffs.

Silva 39 has been out of action since suffering a horrific leg break against Chris Weidman in December 2013. Diaz has not competed in nearly two years since a title fight loss to Georges St Pierre. Both men return tonight and they do so against each other which is cause for rejoicing.

As usual the Houston Chronicle will provide live commentary and results for all fights from the preliminary card all the way to the main card on pay per view.

BREAKING NEWS It was announced before the start of the preliminary card that the bout between Jimy Hettes and Diego Brandao has been canceled due to medical issues. Brawl Sports has confirmed that Hettes fell ill while having his hands wrapped and the fight was scrapped as a result. q

MAIN CARD

Anderson Silva d. Nick Diaz by unanimous decision (49 46 50 45 50 45) This was a weird fight. It was also awesome. Silva doesn t appear to have the same snap and verve he used to have but he s still good enough to handily beat top fighters. As far as fighting Chris Weidman again I don t know about that.

Tyron Woodley d. Kelvin Gastelum by split decision (29 28 28 29 30 27) This was not a good fight. It was a close one too much closer than the dumb judge who gave Woodley a 30 27 scorecard. That s asinine. Woodley picks up the win but looked lethargic in doing so. Once again he didn t pull the trigger.

Al Iaquinta d. Joe Lauzon by TKO round 2 Lauzon had a good first round though I still gave it to Iaquinta. But in the second Iaquinta turned it on and Lauzon showed his age. Iaquinta battered Lauzon dropping him to the canvas before allowing him to stand up and then thrashing him around the Octagon until ref Marc Goddard stopped the fight. This probably went on a little too long before the stoppage Lauzon was out on his feet for quite some time. But at least it was stopped. It was extraordinarily difficult to watch Lauzon stumbling around the cage. I shudder to think what would ve happened with another inept referee in the cage.

Thales Leites d. Tim Boetsch by submission round 2 Leites appeared to be playing with fire in trading punches with Boetsch and nearly paid the price for it. Finally in the second round Leites took Boetsch down and worked into an arm triangle. He didn t get it on the first attempt but got it on the second and Boetsch went to sleep. The great Leites comeback continues.

Thiago Alves d. Jordan Mein by TKO round 2 Man this was a nasty finish. Mein looked fantastic in the first round and appeared well on his way to a big win. And then out of nowhere Alves landed a body kick that reverberated around the arena. A pained look came over Mein s face immediately and he dropped to a knee on the ground. Alves rushed in with a knee that looked illegal in real time but replay showed it landed on Mein s knee and shoulder. Heck of a finish by Alves.

PRELIMINARY CARD FOX Sports 1 8 p.m. ET

Miesha Tate d. Sara McMann by majority decision (29 28 29 27 28 28) A strong comeback from Tate after being dominated in the first round. She lost most of the second round too but then secured a guillotine in the final two minutes and nearly finished McMann. In the third round it was all Tate as she kept Olympic medalist McMann on her back for the entire round. Weird scorecards at the conclusion but this is a big win for Tate in her search for a third title fight with Ronda Rousey.

Derek Brunson d. Ed Herman by TKO round 1 This one didn t last long. Herman doesn t have the ability to take much of a punch anymore and Brunson absolutely pasted him.

John Lineker d. Ian McCall by unanimous decision (29 28 29 28 29 28) Lineker after missing weight (again) turns in a non flyweight performance in beating McCall here. McCall has one hell of a chin. The problem with this result is that Lineker won t be allowed to fight at flyweight again per UFC officials and will have to move up to 135 pounds. So we just eliminated a flyweight title contender in favor of a guy who won t be in the division from this point forward.

Rafael Natal d. Tom Watson by unanimous decision (30 27 30 27 30 26) Watson developed a golf ball like obtrusion on his right foot in the first round. It did not seem to affect him as he threw kicks with the foot throughout the fight. Still he was fairly worked over by Natal for the entire fight. Realistically Natal should have finished this one as he was clearly better than Watson in every area of the fight.

PRELIMINARY CARD UFC Fight Pass 6 30 p.m. ET

Ildemar Alcantara d. Richardson Moreira by split decision I really can t give you much in the way of information about this fight. It was terrible and boring and the crowd hated it. I didn t actually watch enough of it to make a judgment on who won because I was trying to not fall asleep.

Thiago Santos d. Andy Enz by TKO round 1 Santos tried to kill Enz with nearly every punch and finally succeeded in putting him away in violent fashion.

Bobbi Kristina Brown has been placed in a medically induced coma a source says

ATLANTA Ga. Whitney Houston s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was placed in a medically induced coma Saturday after being found facedown and unresponsive in a bathtub full of water a source close to the family has told CNN legal analyst Sunny Hostin.

Brown 21 was not breathing when a man identified as her husband and a friend found her at about 10 25 a.m. at a townhouse in a Roswell subdivision police spokeswoman Lisa Holland said. They called 911 and performed CPR until public safety officers arrived and took over she said.

Brown was taken to North Fulton Hospital where she is still alive and breathing. Other than that I don t know her condition Holland said Saturday afternoon at a press briefing. It was unclear whether Brown was breathing on her own or with a respirator.

Nobody knows what caused Brown s unresponsiveness Holland said but police consider it a medical incident at this time. She said investigators had found nothing to indicate it was drug or alcohol related.

Police had been to the residence recently. Somebody reported a fight there January 23 but nobody answered the door and officers found no evidence of an altercation Holland told CNN.

The police spokeswoman noted one oddity in the case Her mother died in the very same manner.

It was three years ago February 11 that Brown s mother renowned signer Whitney Houston was found dead also in a bathtub in The Beverly Hilton hours before she was to attend a pre Grammys bash there.

An autopsy later revealed that she d drowned face down in extremely hot water about 12 inches deep. The Los Angeles County coroner ruled it an accidental drowning with the effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use being contributing factors.

Brown is her only child.

She encourages me and inspires me Houston once said of her daughter. When I look at her eyes and I see myself I go Okay. I can do this. I can do this.'

Daughter of acclaimed singer RB standout

Brown was born in 1993 during Houston s marriage to RB singer Bobby Brown which ended in divorce in 2007.

The daughter of music royalty became a public figure during the mid 2000s reality show Being Bobby Brown in which she frequently appeared alongside her parents and often had a front row seat to their marital fireworks.

Mother and daughter even performed together on national TV in 2009 when the two sang My Love Is Your Love in Central Park on ABC s Good Morning America.

Given the pair s close relationship it s no surprise that Houston s death was a major blow.

Days after her mother s body was found a grieving Bobbi Kristina then 18 was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center because she was overwhelmed family friend Kim Burrell said.

She loves hard Burrell said then of Bobbi Kristina. She s going to be OK and we re going to see to it.

Married a man who was taken in by Houston

As 2012 rolled on speculation grew over whether the then underage Brown was intoxicated during episodes of Lifetime s brief reality show The Houstons On Our Own which followed life for the family after Houston s death.

One of that reality show s storylines revolved around Brown s relationship with Nick Gordon who lived with Houston and her daughter from the age of 12.

Months later Brown reportedly got engaged to Gordon.

And in January 2014 she tweeted out a picture of wedding rings presumably belonging to her and Gordon along with the words HappilyMarried SO Inlove.

Needless to say concern for Brown surged again after news broke Saturday.

(CNN)The Game of Thrones Season 5 trailer officially landed Friday on the Internet days after debuting in IMAX theaters nationwide.

The two minute trailer made a big splash on the show's Facebook page drawing more than 11 million views as of Saturday afternoon.

But was the trailer really that great Was it everything we could hope for Do those questions even matter

Fans cheered its arrival scouring the spliced scenes for clues to what this season holds. On the Game of Thrones Facebook page fans had several key observations after viewing the trailer some unrelated to the plot.

First who was in charge of the music choice of the band TV on the Radio's cover of David Bowie's Heroes

I feel that the person who picked the song for this trailer has neither watched the show nor read the books one Facebook commenter pointed out.

Another fan said it did not fit the tone of the HBO series Makes it feel like some knockoff cable TV drama instead of the epic fantasy book it is.

Also we have further proof that the rest of the world hates the way Americans write out dates. Several fans took issue with the decision to write out the debut date as 4.12.15 saying it created confusion as to whether it would kick off in December or April.

Am I the only one who thought they meant the 4th of December Not cool Americans not cool... another commenter wrote.

Probably one of the biggest points fans made is that Sansa Stark may finally do something on the show.

So going by the trailer is it safe to assume Sansa will take the role of Lady Stoneheart in exacting revenge against Frey scum Anyway not a great trailer but am so stoked for more GOT that I almost don't care one fan wrote.

We also don't really care that the trailer is so so at best but the chance to see the remaining Stark members exact revenge is tantalizing. Not to mention how Varys suggests to Tyrion that a woman may be destined for the Iron Throne. Daenerys

Breaking down why Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is the NFL MVP

Aaron Rodgers is now a two time NFL Most Valuable Player. With the season that Rodgers had in 2014 it's no surprise that he's back accepting the prestigious award again. Here's a look at the best of Rodgers in 2014.

FIVE BEST MOMENTS OF RODGERS' 2014 SEASON

(in chronological order)

Game winning drive in Miami (Oct. 12) One of the few remaining criticisms about Rodgers is the Packers' record when trailing in the fourth quarter. In Week 6 Rodgers at least temporarily silenced those critics with a memorable series to win the game at Miami. Rodgers was sacked and fumbled near midfield on third down with less than two minutes remaining but right guard T.J. Lang extended the game by chasing down the ball and recovering it. That's when Rodgers made the Dolphins pay for not coming up with the fumble recovery. First and certainly not to be overlooked Rodgers completed an 18 yard pass on fourth and 10. Trailing by four points and needing a touchdown Rodgers completed a pass to Randall Cobb for four yards as the clock continued to run. Fifteen seconds 14 13 12 . . . Rodgers is about to spike the ball when he pulls the Dan Marino fake (against the Dolphins no less) and tosses a quick sideline pass to Davante Adams who wisely gets out of bounds. Rodgers then capped it off with a touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with only six seconds left on the clock and the Packers won.

Throwing six first half touchdowns (Nov. 9) Green Bay was coming back from its bye following a blowout loss in New Orleans the week before as the Packers prepared to host the Chicago Bears. Rodgers' performance ensured that the game was well out of reach even before halftime. Rodgers threw six touchdowns in the first half alone giving Green Bay a 42 0 lead over its division rival at the midway mark. Rodgers tied the NFL record for touchdown passes in a half a mark set by Oakland's Daryle Lamonica in 1969. Rodgers connected with five different receivers on those six touchdowns including a 73 yarder to Jordy Nelson.

Back to back 50 plus point games (Nov. 9 16) That Chicago game was part of an incredible roll that the Packers were on. The 55 points against the Bears could have been far more had Rodgers not been pulled from the game in the third quarter in what was the closest thing that exists to the mercy rule in the NFL. The following week against a much better opponent in the Philadelphia Eagles Green Bay put up 53 points. As was true a week earlier the Packers likely would've exceeded 53 had Rodgers stayed in the game. It wasn't all Rodgers in the Philadelphia blowout as Green Bay got two defensive touchdowns and a special teams touchdown. But it was yet another 70 plus yard touchdown pass to Nelson complemented by other early scoring drives that forced the Eagles to try to play an impossible game of catch up. It marked the fourth consecutive home game in which Rodgers was not needed to play in the fourth quarter giving backup Matt Flynn a chance to get some work in.

Improbable return in Week 17 game (Dec. 28) Rodgers was already playing on an injured left calf when he collapsed to the ground while throwing a second quarter touchdown pass. He needed help getting to the sideline and was soon carted to the locker room later revealing that he had injured a different spot on the same calf. When the Packers took the field in the third quarter there was no sign of Rodgers as Flynn quarterbacked the offense. After Green Bay punted Rodgers emerged from the locker room in uniform though it was uncertain if he would return to the game. He began throwing passes on the sideline then started jumping around before making his triumphant return. There was a lot on the line making Rodgers' availability all the more important. The NFC North title was up for grabs against Detroit as was the Packers' chances of locking up the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and therefore a first round bye. When Rodgers left the game Green Bay was winning 14 0. Once he was back the game was tied at 14. Rodgers went on to lead two second half touchdown drives and got the Packers the win they needed.

Game winning touchdown pass vs. Dallas (Jan. 11) With his left calf injury an obvious limitation Rodgers was pretty much confined to the pocket in their divisional round game against the Cowboys. He tried using his legs on his third pass of the game (a touchdown pass to Quarless) but it was a play in which Rodgers acknowledged he normally would have easily run into the end zone for a touchdown. Throughout the game Rodgers would wait and wait while the pass rushers drew near him deciding the cons outweighed the pros of venturing outside of the offensive tackles. But with Green Bay trailing by one in the fourth quarter Rodgers escaped pressure rolled to his left and fired a strike to Richard Rodgers for the game winner. There was almost no window to fit the pass into but on one healthy leg he found a way to overcome the immobility and pain to throw a pass that very few NFL quarterbacks could make even when completely healthy.

FIVE REASONS WHY RODGERS IS THE NFL'S 2014 MVP

Unstoppable at home Rodgers' statistics at Lambeau Field this season don't even look real. He had a 133.2 passer rating throwing 25 touchdowns and zero interceptions with 9.7 yards per pass attempt. The Packers won all eight of those games scoring an NFL best 38.2 points. The last time Rodgers threw an interception at home was Dec. 2 2012.

Touchdown to interception ratio Nothing is more crucial to winning games than turnover margin and Rodgers turns the ball over significantly less than every other quarterback. With 38 touchdowns and five interceptions his 7.6 1 ratio was by far the best in the league. No other quarterback even had four touchdowns for every one interception. That's how big the gap was between Rodgers and the rest of his peers.

Best QB ever through 100 games Rodgers eclipsed 100 career regular season starts during the 2014 season putting his stats into historical perspective. At that stage of any quarterback's career Rodgers had the most touchdown passes (222) most passing yards (27 520) best passer rating (107.3) most zero interception games (58) most 100 plus passer rating games (60) and best touchdown to interception ratio (4.1 1).

Recent evidence of Rodgers less Packers Midway through last season there were those who thought the Packers were built to win even if Rodgers had to miss extended action. Then Rodgers fractured his left collarbone and it became clear to everyone that Green Bay was a below average team without its star quarterback. The Packers had a 2 5 1 record in 2013 without Rodgers yet when he returned to full health in 2014 Green Bay was a 12 4 team again. That is no coincidence. It's because Rodgers makes that big of a difference to the Packers' success. And isn't that the very definition of valuable

It's mainly a best quarterback award . . . and Rodgers was the NFL's best quarterback in 2014. Six of the past seven league MVPs were quarterbacks with the only exception being Adrian Peterson in 2012. J.J. Watt who received 13 MVP votes had an incredible year and even got involved on offense but he's a defensive player on a team that didn't make the playoffs. It'd be difficult to imagine voters ever giving the award to a non playoff team's defensive player rather than a playoff team's quarterback.

After Week 5 win (Oct. 5) I'm very proud of Aaron. He's at the point in his career now that it seems like every week or every other week he's breaking a record. He is just a special player.

Three days after game winning drive in Miami (Oct. 15) I think Aaron is playing very very well. I think he's spoiled us. I've seen him play better. I just think one thing from the standard that he's set and all the little things he's done at a high level he's got a lot of good football in front of him.

After Rodgers threw six first half touchdowns and whether McCarthy had ever seen a QB play better (Nov. 9) I'll tell you I like the fact that I have to stand up here and answer that question a lot. I'm going to have to wait till I'm sitting on that porch thinking back but he was right on tonight. His statistics at halftime I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that. He played a great game.

After Week 11 win (Nov 16) I need to figure out new ways to compliment Aaron frankly. He's playing at an extremely high level.

After season finale win in which Rodgers returned after getting carted to locker room with a second left calf injury (Dec. 28) Aaron Rodgers I don't know what to say about him. The fact that he can come back out after the calf injury and to perform on a limited game plan and play at the level he continues to play at that he played at I thought was extraordinary. It was clearly an MVP performance. Another MVP performance by Aaron Rodgers.

FIVE MOST TELLING COMMENTS THIS SEASON FROM TEAMMATES ABOUT RODGERS

Bryan Bulaga (Dec. 28) Unbelievable. I literally just got done talking to him and telling him that was about as gutsy as it gets right there. When he went down I wasn't sure what it was. I was a little nervous to be honest with you. And then to see him come back out after that first series and get ready to go I mean that was unbelievable.

Clay Matthews (Dec. 28) I'm not impressed. I think he's like Paul Pierce. He just flopped they had to take him out on a wheelchair and then he comes back and beats the Lakers. Something reminiscent of that or LeBron (James) cramping. We needed him and he's obviously the MVP for a reason. If this doesn't solidify it today I don't know what will.

Davante Adams (Jan. 11) It says that he's a future Hall of Fame quarterback. That's what they do. He's going to step up when he has to.

Jordy Nelson (Jan. 11) We know he's the best quarterback in the game. He was the best quarterback in the game today on one leg. He's been the best quarterback in the game on two legs. He knows what he can do. He's an extremely brilliant player understands the game understands our offense and can make any and every throw.

Randall Cobb (Jan. 11) He's the greatest one in the game and he comes out and proves it week in and week out. And for him to come out and gut it out again and be able to make these plays is huge for us.

The First Heroism of Bruce Jenner But Not the Last

After months of tittering gossip y speculation People Magazine is alleging that former Olympic decathlete and reality TV star Bruce Jenner has decided to come out as trans and will soon be living life as female

Their source added that He is finally happy and his family is accepting of what he s doing. He s in such a great space. That s why it s the perfect time to do something like this.

TMZ is jumping into the fray as well boasting that they ve been told that for way more than a year Bruce was doing this and that Jenner is now far along in the process has undergone various procedures and psychological counseling and is ready to show his journey to the world in an E Network series.

To be clear until Jenner actually makes some sort of announcement or public statement citing unnamed sources friends of the family or even vague quotes from the Kardashians themselves to declare without a doubt that Jenner is transgender is wildly premature. As Janet Mock a trans activist and best selling author recently wrote in response to a transphobic cover photo by InTouch Magazine this kind of public shaming and speculation spreads the misconception that being trans is laughable.

It s this destructive thinking that pushes trans people deeper into isolation it s this thinking that leads many to justify the disproportionate violence transwomen of color face it s this thinking that convinces a 17 year old girl that her only option for peace is to jump in front of a truck Mock said. And nothing is wrong absolutely nothing is wrong or laughable about being trans. What s wrong is a magazine aiming to humiliate someone by labeling them a transgender woman as if being trans and being a woman is an insult.

What s been forgotten or mentioned merely as a footnote is that long before Jenner was shoehorned into the sitcom ish role of a bumbling and feckless if well meaning TV dad Jenner was considered the greatest athlete in the world a cultural touchstone on par with LeBron James or Lionel Messi today.

After finishing 10th in 1972 Jenner embarked on a relentless training regimen in preparation for the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal. In an interview with Chris Jones at Esquire Jenner described the grueling regimen and laser like focus.

Jenner had that photograph blown up and he put it up on the wall in his austere apartment over his couch. Except that he didn t center it. He pushed it off to the left because he was saving a spot for the next photograph the one that would be taken when he crossed the finish line in triumph in Montreal in 1976 Jones wrote. He trained for eight hours a day every day for four years and every night Jenner came home and looked at that empty space on his wall. I stared at that hole he says and knew what was going to go there.

In 1976 Jenner won the gold in the decathlon finishing with a then world record 8 616 points. The image of Jenner crossing the finish line with his arms outstretched in triumph and his long hair flapping in the breeze became iconic plastered on the front of a box of Wheaties cereal. He met with President Gerald Ford and was on the cover of pretty much every glossy you could find in publications as wide ranging in subject and tone as Sports Illustrated Tiger Beat and Playgirl.

In the late 70s and early 80s Jenner was everywhere making appearances on Battle of the Network Stars and starring in the campy ode to all the now laughable aspects of the Disco era Can t Stop the Music. On the small screen Jenner was always available for a guest spot on shows like CHiPs The Fall Guy Silver Spoons and Murder She Wrote.

Basically Jenner was an American hero the world s greatest athlete. But the collective amnesia with regards to Jenner s exploits isn t just the insatiable maw that is reality TV gobbling up his former life. It s been shoved down the memory hole because trans athletes sad so say remain a threat to our collective pre conceived notions of gender. We still define sports stars as being the paragon of masculinity a heroic ideal meant to be emulated and showered not only with fame and fortune but sexualized adoration as well.

Think Joe DiMaggio or Wilt Chamberlain. The assumption and part of the reason they re posited as male ideals is that jocks get laid a lot (by women). This idealized construct starts to collapse thought if and when someone like Jenner chooses a different identity or say when Jason Collins comes out. When faced with this seeming paradox or puncturing of one s worldview the result is largely anger and bigotry or at best guffaws and mockery.

A few weeks ago the thoughtful social scientists at Fox and Friends were chortling about the InTouch cover when Brian Kilmeade inadvertently hit the nail on the head saying Okay I don t know. I just don t see him on a Wheaties box again in the future.

I emailed Dave Zirin sports editor at The Nation about the reasons for this backlash.

So much of gender identity in the US is tied to sports. It starts with the fact that from an early age kids are segregated by sex and by how adults gender identify them. It continues in terms if how they re treated and coached. Trans athletes and athletes who refuse to gender identify find themselves whether they want to or not with the heavy and at times dangerous burden of having to represent a challenge to this deeply ingrained way of thinking he wrote. Even if they just want to play their gender construction becomes politicized.

Athletes that have formerly identified as female face a different kind of prejudice but it s part and parcel of the same problem. Women that compete in sports have always been tagged with some form of gender shaming going back to the whole construct of tomboys and continuing through the sniggling jokes about ex Soviet female Olympians with mustaches. A woman that competes in sports is already seen as being too masculine or in some way a betrayal of the entire notion of femininity. But even if Title IX and other advances have fought back against this kind of reactionary thinking the prejudice against trans athletes remains relatively permissible.

Take Fallon Fox an MMA fighter that came out as trans in 2013. As Parker Molloy wrote at VICE Sports she s been ridiculed and more the subject of hand wringing editorials that rely on some really shoddy pseudoscience or relapse into revanchist bigotry.

She wants to be able to fight women in MMA I say no fucking way UFC commenter and ex Fear Factor host Joe Rogan screeched. I say if you had a dick at one point in time you also have all the bone structure that comes with having a dick. You have bigger hands you have bigger shoulder joints. You re a fucking man. That s a man OK You can t have... that s... I don t care if you don t have a dick any more.

More than anything trans athletes are viewed as a threat as the result of ignorance plain and simple. There's always this argument being put forth by those against trans inclusion in sports that trans women have some inherent advantage in sports over their cisgender (non trans) counterparts Molloy explained via email. As every study conducted on the topic has shown however this simply isn't the case.

Yes it s certainly possible to see the rumored TV show as just another self marketing effort or cash cow on Jenner s part. But if you can t see the difference between the faux drama of Kim or Kourtney s latest romantic dalliances and the bravery required by Jenner making this incredibly difficult personal journey public knowing that he ll be a both a tabloid punchline and the subject of serious prejudice you aren t paying attention.

This too is heroic.

Mitt Romney makes the right call

And so it all ends with one final Mitt Romney flip flop.

Having thrust his way back into the GOP presidential sweepstakes three weeks ago by letting us know that despite long months of ruling it out he really did want to wage a third campaign for president Romney has now decided he won t run after all.

That s a smart decision and I have to admit one I m surprised he made.

After all we had already started hearing the usual Romney pre campaign claptrap.

To wit He and Ann were convinced he d make the best president of anyone in the GOP field. (It s hard to say which of the two is more enamored of Mitt and his putative abilities.)

And given that they thought he had a duty to the country to run.

Mitt of course always likes to couch his personal ambitions in patriotic terms even though only he and a handful acolytes truly believe that blather.

He clearly thought the country was having second thoughts that it wanted a do over.

Brush aside the usual justifications and what was obviously driving his latest presidential exploration was ego ambition and a desire for redemption. A man who thinks his own superiority is self evident Romney was surprised to get beaten no thumped by Barack Obama in 2012. He didn t want his political career to end on that sour note.

And he clearly thought the country was having second thoughts that it wanted a do over.

Make no mistake that kind of notion is important to Romney. Some months after his 1994 US Senate loss to Ted Kennedy I had lunch with him. He d taken a post election poll Romney told me and it revealed that if Massachusetts voters had known the Republicans would take over Congress in the midterms they d have elected him rather than reelecting Kennedy. His self esteem badly bruised by his loss Romney took real solace in that supposed sentiment.

For my part I was surprised he would spend good money on that kind of ego massage. However this latest episode brought to mind that post election vanity project of two decades past.

Except that this time there won t be another run.

Romney could point to surveys showing that Republican voters were receptive to seeing him try again for the presidency that said early polls often show residual support for a party s last nominee.

But he just as clearly misjudged the mood of the Republican establishment.

Mitt likes to style himself as a white knight reluctantly responding to repeated urgings that he ride to rescue.

Yet when he made it known that he was thinking of running again the reaction he got from GOP s officeholders graybeards and stalwarts didn t buttress his preferred story line.

Instead it was basically this Nice guy but he had his chance and he blew it and now it s time to move on.

And now apparently both the Republican Party and Romney will.

Which is the best course for both of them.
