IPO lands Shake Shacks Danny Meyer $342M in 1st day

What started out as a hot dog cart in 2001 has emerged as Shake Shack the 63 store chain with a valuation of $1.63 billion after its first day of public trading.

New York restaurateur Danny Meyer who conceived the cart to help restore a then downtrodden Madison Square Park saw his wealth increase by $342 million Friday as stock soared 118.6 percent above its initial public offering price of $21.00 per share to end the day at $45.90.

Meyer owns 7.4 million of those shares for a 21 percent stake in the hot dog cart he turned into a humble hamburger kiosk in 2004.

An even bigger winner from the IPO was Leonard Green Partners the private equity firm took a controlling interest in Meyer s Union Square Hospitality Group in 2012.

The splitting of Shake Shack from privately held USHP which remains home to such upscale eateries as Gramercy Tavern The Modern and Maialino left Green with a 26.0 percent Shack stake valued at $423 million after the IPO in the new public company.

The share s upward trajectory Friday didn t completely surprise analysts who noted the halo over Shake Shack s so called fast casual eating category has burned brightly since Chipotle Mexican Grill conducted its IPO in 2006.

The dearth of publicly traded restaurants added to the IPO excitement as did Meyer s contacts in the media and top tier ranking in the restaurant firmament.

That most Shake Shacks are in areas frequented by financial types including Dubai Kuwait and London as well as lower Manhattan created even more sizzle with just the right segment.

The chain is undeniably popular in Manhattan where the average store rings up $7.4 million in sales annually.

Yet even its domestic non Manhattan Shacks with average sales of $3.8 million throw off enough business to stir the envy of the food industry.

That said however is a self styled chain of roadside burger stands that offers classic American fare of upscale burgers hot dogs crinkle cut fries shakes and custard really worth $26 million an outlet

Never mind that Meyer plans to expand the chain by 10 outlets a year John A. Gordon of restaurant advisory Pacific Management Consulting Group dismissed its implied stock valuation as unsustainable over a long period.

This is especially the case he said on comparing metrics commonly used for restaurant companies. Gordon estimated Shake Shack s EBITDA to be $18 million last year and its enterprise value at $1.7 billion as of Friday.

That suggests the chain began life as a public company with a 94.4 Ebitda multiple compared with a 10.7 multiple for McDonald s.

Granted Shake Shack is no McDonald s but the multiple will move lower as the quest for finding what Gordon called premier sites and additional customers escalates each year.

At the end of a very exciting day CEO Randy Garutti told The Post We gave options to every manager in our company. They could also buy stock at the IPO price.

Her black family and her white family joust for custody of Eloise (Jillian Estell left) with Kevin Costner as her grandpa.

Photo Tracy Bennett / Associated Press

The little girl is adorable and two sides of the family are fighting over her in Black or White. On one side there s the newly widowed maternal grandfather (Kevin Costner) who raised the girl all her life. On the other there s the paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) who wants the girl to grow up around her and her extended family.

One of these days it may be possible to make a movie about a dispute between white characters and black characters that s just about people in dispute. It might even be possible right now and someone ought to try it. But Black or White even by its title invites audiences to see it as a film about race. This puts too much pressure on the story and limits where it can go.

To put it simply people may be right and people may be wrong but there are no right races or wrong races. A writer director who chooses to have characters representing race and not themselves alone paints himself into a corner in which everyone in the movie absolutely must come out all right.

Still working within these self imposed limits writer director Mike Binder does some interesting things and casts the movie well. For the child Eloise he finds a little movie star in Jillian Estell who is warm and already a good actress and precocious without being bratty.

Costner by his very nature has an aura of decency and integrity and while Binder doesn t have Costner play against that he gives him some rough edges. Elliot has a hard to control temper not with Eloise but with everyone else and he is developing a drinking problem. Actually he has two drinking problems He s drinking heavily and he s drinking the wrong Scotch.

Costner s portrayal of drunkenness is technically brilliant right up with the very best. Costner remembers what others often forget that when people are drunk they re usually doing their best to conceal it. When they re exposed it s almost always through cracks in the facade rarely by a wholesale crumbling. Costner also conveys varying degrees of drunkenness for different scenes with such clarity that I can t begin to figure how he did it.

In the role of Rowena Elliot s opponent in the custody fight Octavia Spencer pushes at the constraints of her usual likable persona. She s a self made woman the matriarch and support of two households but she s a difficult personality driven by impulses she s not entirely aware of. Rowena tells Elliot that she believes that Eloise needs to be around her people but as played by Spencer and hinted at in Binder s script her deeper motive might be to rescue her drug addicted son.

Black or White is such a mix of smart and tin eared choices that you can love or hate the movie depending on what you choose to notice. It has for example songs on the soundtrack that are glaring in their inappropriateness. At one point Costner is driving down the road in a contemplative mood and the soundtrack is playing Billy Joel s Don t Ask Me Why. (Why Don t ask.) In another scene Binder chooses a moment of introspection to resurrect the 1976 hit Misty Blue. Speaking of unwelcome resurrections Jennifer Ehle keeps showing up in visions as the deceased wife smiling in that peaceful loving so happy to be dead way that we all know from bad movies.

On the other hand it s hard not to like a picture that casts comedian Bill Burr as Costner s law partner lets him act in dramatic scenes and yet every so often throws him a funny line. Paula Newsome as a judge similarly benefits from lots of amusing and playable moments in what could have been a bland role. It also should be noted that at no point does Costner get choked up and make a speech about how much he loves everybody. Black or White could have been that kind of movie but it s not.

Eventually what tips Black and White ever so slightly into the losing column is the resolution which is rushed and far fetched. Still the movie is appealing enough to make you want to believe it even when you don t.

Project Almanac Black or White The Loft Review Revue

By WSJ Staff Project Almanac Paramount/Everett

This week at the multiplex we ve got time traveling teens ( Project Almanac starring Jonny Weston and Sofia Black D Elia) squabbling families ( Black or White starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer) and philandering friends ( The Loft starring Karl Urban and James Marsden). Find out what the critics have to say on Rotten Tomatoes.

Project Almanac

Project Almanac is unlikely to replace Back to the Future or Bill and Ted s Excellent Adventure in the popular imagination. Still critics say this time travel thriller is stylish and smart even if it eventually runs out of steam and the found footage gimmick doesn t quite work. David (Jonny Weston) is a high school science wiz who builds a time machine based on a model developed by his late father. But when he and his friends journey into the past they end up messing up the present in unforeseen ways. Project Almanac is currently at 35 percent on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer check out some of the reviews here

Black or White

Heartfelt intentions and great actors do not a successful film make. Case in point Black or White which critics say saddles its stellar cast with a contrived story that only touches on the weightiness to which it aspires. Kevin Costner plays Elliot a hard drinking attorney who finds himself caring for his orphaned granddaughter after his wife dies. But Rowena (Octavia Spencer) her paternal grandmother thinks he s not up to the task and soon she and Elliot are involved in an emotional custody battle. Black or White is currently at 31 percent on the Tomatometer here s what some of the critics are saying

The Loft

It s been nearly four years since The Loft was filmed and now it hits theaters without being screened for critics. None of this information is encouraging. Melissa Gilbert explains why she had her breast implants removed

Melissa Gilbert couldn't be happier about her decision to have her breast implants removed earlier this month. The actress told ABC News she went from a cup size DD to a B.

Just an average B not a big B Gilbert told ABC.

Best known for her role on Little House on the Prairie the 50 year old actress said she first got implants 20 years ago but before she went for the surgery she found other ways to enhance her appearance.

It was just an assumption that it was time to wear a padded bra that an A cup was not enough. I had to be a B she said of wearing a padded bra at 16 on Little House.

Gilbert who said she was a late bloomer later decided to get saline implants then silicone after noticing a huge difference between her and her Little House on the Prairie costar Alison Arngrim.

There was a huge difference Gilbert said. I was wearing like you know Speedo one piece bathing suits. She was wearing all these sort of sexy bikinis and stuff. I was nowhere near that.

Gilbert said her implants were causing neck and back pain. With her husband's support she finally made the decision to have them removed.

My husband has been so supportive and so sweet about this whole process ... He said Do it go. Go she said.

After loss of Rasheed Sulaimon time to rethink how good Duke can be

On Dec. 3 Duke won at Wisconsin in a showdown of top five teams. The margin was 10 points but the visitors' performance was far more convincing than that with the Blue Devils entering a stifling Kohl Center and demonstrating a maturity that belied the age of several key players. On that night it seemed silly to put a ceiling on what this team might accomplish because Duke appeared to have the capacity to blow it off and make you start building a new one all over again.

On Sunday the players slipped commemorative T shirts over their jerseys and mobbed Mike Krzyzewski on the Madison Square Garden floor to revel in their coach s landmark 1 000th career win. It was a swirl of joy and relief what with a boulder sized burden unlashed and sent rolling away. The recent startling consecutive losses to N.C. State and Miami notwithstanding a team freed of an urgency to make history once again seemed poised to reach its potential.

College Basketball And then came 4 25 p.m. ET on Thursday That s when the announcement came that Duke had kicked junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon off the team. It was less than a day after the Blue Devils fell to 4 3 and to sixth place in the ACC with a road loss at Notre Dame. It was two days before a game at undefeated second ranked Virginia that could drop Duke to .500 in league play.

It was time to stop assuming the Blue Devils had no ceiling and time to start wondering where the bottom was.

The most generous reading of Sulaimon's dismissal would be this Krzyzewski tossed out a player with whom he always seemed to have an uneven relationship recall that Sulaimon was benched against Michigan last year and perhaps that has removed a caustic element from the operation. It s not an academic issue Duke said in its release. And when you read Krzyzewski s official statement on this you left impressed that the person taking dictation could make out the words spat through clenched teeth.

Rasheed has been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program Krzyzewski said. It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner. After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program.

Duke fans can take comfort in the fact that their team has still won 17 of its 20 games this season and that Jahlil Okafor is still around. But that won t mute their real concerns. The Blue Devils now have just eight available scholarship players. A so so defensive team (50th nationally in defensive efficiency per KenPom.com) has lost a capable veteran stopper whose 19.3 minutes per game will at least in part likely go to a seldom used freshman in Grayson Allen. While Sulaimon was effectively a role player who averaged a career low 7.7 points per game and while he had struggled recently by missing 30 of his last 45 shots over the past six games he was deeply involved when he was on the floor. His usage rate of 21.8 percent tied with Justise Winslow for second on the team. Sulaimon averaged only 7.5 points per game but his overall effective field goal percentage was 50.4 a healthy enough number. This was a guy Duke counted on in some way to a measurable degree.

College Basketball And now he s been dismissed outright with the Blue Devils conference title hopes already wobbly and two more games with two ranked teams looming in short order Virginia on Saturday and then a rematch with Notre Dame at Cameron Indoor Stadium a week later.

After that their schedule has only two games against ranked foes both versus North Carolina so the ACC road before the Blue Devils is not entirely rutted. But resorting to that for optimism sort of proves the point Not even two months ago this season wasn t about Duke surviving in conference play. It was about dominating the league and proving to be a viable challenger to Kentucky s presumed supremacy in college basketball.

There is enough talent in Durham to match just about any other team. And Duke was already desperate heading into the weekend so this can only stoke any cornered animal reaction the team might have already had in Charlottesville on Saturday night. But with Sulaimon gone there is increasingly little for Krzyzewski to rely upon beyond that formidable first five.

It s reckless to count the Blue Devils out. But it s delusional not to look up Thursday and realize that the ceiling looks a lot closer than it did not too long ago.

Terry Carter Suge Knight Murder Victim Confused For Battlestar Galactica ...

Terry Carter was allegedly killed by rap mogul Suge Knight but many news and entertainment outlets confused the 55 year old truck driver Carter for the former Battlestar Galactica star of the same name.

A different Terry Carter starred on the science fiction show leading some news sites to believe that Knight s victim was the Terry Carter who had died. Obituaries for the Battlestar Galactica star even turned up on sites like Cinema Blend though these reports were later revised to include the correct information.

Entertainment Weekly still had its story on the alleged Suge Knight murder up but took out information that identified Carter as the Battlestar Galactica actor.

The story has been revised to reflect that Blatt confirmed the victim was Terry Carter but did not identify Carter as the actor from McCloud and the original Battlestar Galactica.'

Suge Knight was arrested this week on suspicion of murder after allegedly running down Carter with his car. The incident stemmed from an argument on the set of the movie Straight Outta Compton a biopic about the influential rap group N.W.A.

After Knight and a group of unidentified men argued the victims left the scene and went to a nearby burger restaurant. Witnesses said Knight followed the group in his truck and ran them down then backed over the men before fleeing the scene.

But Suge Knight s lawyer saw it differently saying that the group threatened to kill Knight and were attempting to drag him outside of the vehicle when he made an effort to escape in fear for his life.

I am positive Mr. Knight will be exonerated attorney James Blatt said. Investigators are still interviewing witnesses and still need to see video of the incident.

A report from the Los Angeles Times could have cleared up that the Terry Carter allegedly killed by Suge Knight is not the same one who starred in Battlestar Galactica. The story identified the deceased Carter as being 55 years old while the Carter who played Colonel Tigh on the popular television show is 86.

Mitt Romney Drops Out But He Got Us Good

As it was foretold here we are on a Friday and Mitt Romney baron of the end of the week news dump is once more tugging the rug beneath our feet

Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he will not run for president in 2016.

Hugh Hewitt posted text of the remarks Romney was to make on a conference call with donors discussing his 2016 plans on Friday.

After putting considerable thought into making another run for president I ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee the prepared remarks say.

Well how do you like that. A few weeks ago I wrote a piece called Mitt Romney Will Have His Revenge in which I noted how Romney's latest caprice to sidle up to the 2016 cycle and for whatever reason begin flirting with it had scrambled the media's brains. At the time I thought Well for realsies what's stopping him Why NOT throw everyone and everything into disarray The guy took lumps during his last run especially during that stretch when he was steadily dispatching his primary foes. At that point a lot of people who you'd think would be lining up behind the certain victor were instead clamoring for Jeb for Christie for anyone to get into the race. So I figured it made sense for Mitt to re emerge now if for no other reason than to rattle the cages of so many who'd deign to rattle his own.

Well it didn't go as I predicted. Still Mitt Romney got us good.

Credit Jonathan Chait for getting in early and getting out quickly. Even as Romney was setting hearts aflutter with his feints Chait was writing thusly Nothing could convince me that Romney will actually run for president not even Romney taking the oath of office. In other words he treated Romney the way most journalists treat Donald Trump with his perennial bluster about his own presidential ambitions. Nah son you playing that was the correct call.

If Romney managed nothing else during this brief period of speculation he can surely say he got the rest of us goofy footed. History will remember if history cares that The Daily Beast ended up as the 1948 Chicago Tribune of this whole mini melodrama offering the world a hastily written and retracted Romneyverse version of Dewey Beats Truman.

But all of that is ultimately just the cherry atop the weird Romney boomlet sundae. The creamy stuff beneath tells a story of how we in the political media despite the initial instinct to write a new Romney candidacy off entirely nevertheless found ourselves ready willing and able to suddenly get impossibly re invested in Mitt Romney's persona.

Just think about how we all suddenly started talking about Mitt Romney's personal real estate holdings again. Romney might sell his La Jolla house screamed the headlines. You know the one with the famous car elevator Surely there is meaning in this The Boston Globe did a deep dive into Romney's post election home procurement binge noting that Romney whose last presidential bid was hampered by his image of excessive privilege and insensitivity may recognize the trouble his real estate holdings could cause in another campaign.

Elsewhere came the deep think. In The Washington Post Philip Rucker stated with confidence that if he runs again in 2016 Romney is determined to rebrand himself as authentic. Because that's what authentic people do choose a brand and then strive to become That Brand Incarnate.

All of us who read that statement probably should have recognized it as the moment when we reached Peak Obtuse. But instead reporters in the field oh yeah I guess I should point out that reporters were dispatched to follow Romney around during this time took that authenticity cue and started probing Romney's every move waiting for the moment when Romney would drop his guard and become real. And so we got tweets like this

At soda fountain Mitt Romney mixes it up A little Diet Coke and he says a little bit of the real stuff.

Philip Rucker ( PhilipRucker) January 28 2015

This was a fervent period of Romney examination Romscrutiny during which no event however mundane could be completely ruled out as some sort of sneaky political content delivery mechanism. It was kind of like Lost was back on the air and Romney was the smoke monster and we were all squinting at our screens trying to divine the meaning of it all.

Anyway. The real story of Romney's brief do si do with 2016 is probably something simpler and less exciting He earnestly considered running floated a trial balloon watched as said balloon was ruthlessly shot down by elites from his own party and now he's bowing out gracefully. And yet The frenzy was real was silly was in a way sort of glorious.

So for one last time with Mitt Romney on one last Friday let us with all good cheer appreciate how every now and then someone comes along with the ability to gently screw with us. Quality trolling Mitt Romney Thanks for doing it at midday for a change so we can all make happy hour.

And now on to the next chapter

Can t wait for 8 months from now when the GOP primary is bitter and ugly and suddenly the 'maybe Romney will jump back in talk starts

Game of Thrones Season 5 Trailer Reveals the Shows Real Hero

It s finally here After dribs and drabs of fleeting scenes HBO has finally released its first full length trailer for Game of Thrones Season 5. And it s brilliant. You can watch it in full at the Game of Thrones Facebook page.

Set to TV on the Radio s cover of David Bowie s Heroes the trailer checks in with all our favorite familiar faces. (And a few new ones too ) We see Sansa still under the thumb of Littlefinger. (Or is it the other way around ) We see the hint of another royal wedding a scheming Lannister or two Jon Snow doing his best to lead his men and Arya striking out on her own. That girl with the whip She s a Sand Snake. You re going to like her very much.

But the trailer saves the best moment for last. Sure Dany gets a shining moment earlier on with one of her pithy Breaker of Chains one liners. I'm not going to stop the wheel I'm going to break the wheel. But what becomes clear as the trailer comes to a close is that Varys (and maybe Tyrion) have plans for Dany. Great big Westerosi plans. She might just be the hero King s Landing deserves.

HBO has also released 18 new images from the upcoming season which you can see in the gallery below.

Ted 2 Gets Bear Able Trailer

I have discussed before how 2012 was an uncommonly strong year for mid to low budget commercial ventures that hit harder than expected which resulted in three years later a flood of would be part 2 s that now fill up the 2015 release slate. Of those films Seth MacFarlane s Ted was easily the biggest of the bunch. And thus now we get the first teaser for Ted 2 dropping from Universal/Comcast Comcast Corp. on June 26th of this year. There will be another ad for this film this coming Sunday as word already leaked of a Super Bowl commercial involving Tom Brady and the deflated football scandal that I probably ought to look up so I can understand said Super Bowl commercial this Sunday. It s not that I don t care about football but rather that everything I learned about the rules of football and how to strategically played football came from Tecmo Bowl and John Madden Football 93.

The first Ted was an original R rated comedy starring Mark Wahlberg as an overgrown adolescent whose best friend was the childhood teddy bear who magically came to life and stayed with him through adulthood. The film was a surprisingly witty and surprisingly profound mediation on arrested development with an emphasis on how we hold on to the nostalgic tokens of our childhood as a crutch. Considering how much of Seth MacFarlane s Family Guy was (at least initially) peppered with nostalgia fueled references it was almost courageous how brutally the film basically openly mocked and criticized the fan base of its creator. The film was a huge hit for Universal.

It scored a $54 million debut weekend (the biggest opening weekend for an R rated not based on anything project) a $218m domestic total (the 3rd biggest domestic total for an R rated not based on anything project behind Beverly Hills Cop and The Hangover) and a stunning $549m worldwide cume (the fourth biggest grossing R rated film ever behind The Hangover part II The Passion of the Christ and The Matrix Reloaded). It cemented Mark Wahlberg s slow but steady status as a genuine in the right project face on the poster opener and basically earned around 5.5x its $50m budget. So it is not surprising that we now have Ted 2 and now the only question is whether or not it will be anywhere near as good as the original and anywhere near as successful. The quality question isn t one to be answered at the moment but the commercial inquiry seems fare to at least discuss.

22 Jump Street was a rare comedy sequel that surpassed the original both domestically and overseas earning $190 million domestic and $139m overseas ($332m total) compared to 21 Jump Street s $201m total (including just $63m overseas). The Hangover part II is another precedent of sorts opening at near record levels (an $85m Fri Sun debut frame of a $137m Memorial Day weekend frame) but falling slightly short of the first film domestically ($254m vs. $277m) while passing it overseas resulting in a noticeably larger worldwide total ($586m vs. $467m). That seems a plausible end point for Ted 2 one which Universal (and production companies Media Rights Capital Fuzzy Door Productions Smart Entertainment and Bluegrass Films) would be perfectly happy with. Anything bigger than that will result in inflation notwithstanding one of the most successful R rated films ever released.

Ted 2 starring Mark Wahlberg Seth MacFarlane Amanda Seyfried (who refreshingly doesn t seem to be a new love interest) Mila Kunis Richard Schiff (hopefully spoofing his You hate me because I represent bureaucracy but you all know I m right shtick) Patrick Warburton Morgan Freeman Michael Dorn Dennis Haysbert Liam Neeson Sam J. Jones John Slattery David Hasselhoff and Tom Brady opens June 26th 2015 from Universal. As always we ll see.
