Dwyane Wade rumored to have mutual interest in Lakers also linked to Cavs

If Dwyane Wade is just trying to bluff the Heat into giving him the contract he wants he and his camp including his father are doing a pretty good job of at least giving Miami fans reason to worry. On Tuesday he referred to his Heat career in the past tense on national TV and Sunday brought more reasons to wonder if he ll be playing for a new team this season.

Sports Illustrated s Chris Mannix tweeted out rumors of mutual interest between the guard who has played in Miami for the entirety of his 12 years in the NBA and the Lakers. Wade could opt out of a player option and make himself a free agent while the Heat would prefer that he opt in.

While many execs still see Wade/Heat as contract saber rattling a Wade option will be the Lakers. Mutual interest per league sources.

Chris Mannix ( ChrisMannixSI) June 21 2015

Hard to see LA offering Wade a better chance to win than Miami especially in the West. But it is LA and they do have money to burn.

Chris Mannix ( ChrisMannixSI) June 21 2015

Indeed the Lakers have over $20 million to spend in free agency this summer and with Kobe Bryant possibly playing his final season the team surely won t let all that cash burn a hole in its pocket. It doesn t seem like the ideal pairing given that both play the same position but it could work in this small ball NBA era and Los Angeles would have plenty of veteran scoring ability to go with the No. 2 overall draft pick.

But could Wade actually be eyeing a reunion with his pal LeBron James this time on the Cavaliers There have been rumors to that effect and on Sunday Wade s father Dwyane Wade Sr. fanned those flames. Here is what he wore at a Miami church appearance

Hmmm interesting choice of apparel there Pops (happy Father s Day by the way). According to CBS Sports Wade Sr. also had this to say to an Internet radio station

Host We have a question from David in Miami. He wants us to ask you Is D Wade going to stay with Miami next year

Dwyane Sr. You know I ve heard that maybe two to three hundred times. And the best answer I can probably give to that is you guys have had D Wade ever since he came in the league let s just pray with God that he stays here the rest of the way.

Well it sounds like Wade Sr. wants his son to stay with the Heat. So what was with that shirt Also kind of an odd line there you guys have had D Wade ever since he came in the league.

Is that a hint that Wade feels like he s spent long enough in Miami and wants to try somewhere else for a spell Or is this all posturing by Team Dwyane in order to put pressure on the Heat to pony up

We re just going to have to stay tuned to the NBA s offseason one in which the fate of Wade could turn into a major story line.

On paper Colombia is a much stronger team than Peru and after a stellar 2014 World Cup appearance many thought they could be among the finalists. Colombia s coach Jos P kerman told reporters he hopes his team can play more like they played against Brazil than Venezuela.

I respect a lot of the players in their hierarchy as the players on my team do to the rival.

They re a good team with important players and have good control of the ball. We hope to repeat a lot of the things we did against Brazil to be able to leave with the victory.

Fans who watch Colombia vs. Peru live stream will see the definition of one of the most competitive groups at the 2015 Copa America. This is a must win for Colombia who has dreams of repeating their appearance at the 2014 World Cup in which they reached the quarterfinals and became one of the darlings of the tournament. P kerman said that forwards Paolo Guerrero Jefferson Farfan and Claudio Pizarro were some players to watch out for Los Incas.

Will True Detective Finally Break Rachel McAdams Free From Her Good Girl ...

Rachel McAdams first caught American audiences attentions in teen movies particularly as the typical popular high school girl who made the lives of everyone around her a living hell. She did this twice in two years first with the regrettable Rob Schneider vehicle The Hot Chick (in which she and Schneider s character a petty thief switch bodies) and more notably as Regina George in Mean Girls which established McAdams as a familiar face in Hollywood.

But she s too good to play the bad girl really which is why she followed up Mean Girls with another contemporary classic The Notebook. And somehow McAdams was thus known as the girl next door of Hollywood (maybe also because she hails from Canada ). Despite her efforts to play the opposite she s still consistently cast in vanilla good girl roles often as the romantic lead.

First there was Wedding Crashers in which she falls in love with Owen Wilson s playboy type (who realizes he needs to clean up his act for the woman he loves). Then there was The Time Traveler s Wife and About Time you can imagine her characters struggles in both films loving men who can t stay in one place at the right time. In Morning Glory her first (and honestly only) star vehicle she plays an aspiring news producer who tries to balance her job (and her talk show s dueling hosts played by Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton) while dating a guy played by Patrick Wilson. In The Vow her character loses her memory after a car crash and her poor husband (played by an often shirtless Channing Tatum) works to prove himself to her once again. And she was recently in Cameron Crowe s abysmal Aloha the less we say about that the better.

But it s not that McAdams hasn t given it her all in these roles and she hasn t exactly steered clear of tougher stuff. In Wes Craven s Red Eye her character s meet cute with a handsome man on an airplane turns deadly when he reveals himself to be a terrorist and coerces her to join his plot threatening to have her father killed if she refuses. In The Family Stone a popular if treacly family dramedy she plays the cynical and sardonic woman who dismisses her brother s fianc e when he brings her home for Christmas. She starred alongside Owen Wilson a second time playing his self obsessed and caustic wife in Woody Allen s Midnight in Paris. And she played Irene Adler in both of Guy Ritchie s Sherlock Holmes movies serving as both a love interest and a foil to the titular detective played by Robert Downey Jr.

Her most ambitious work however can be seen in movies that failed to receive much acclaim from critics or audiences particularly Terrence Malick s To the Wonder (even though she is lost in an otherwise dull film that follows a romance between an American man and his Ukranian wife) and Brian De Palma s Passion a trashy erotic thriller that at least let her free of her overwhelming good girl presence.

To be fair to McAdams of course it s not that she has done anything wrong in her career. In 2013 she told The Times Truthfully I never really wanted to be a big movie star. I never even wanted to work outside of Canada or outside of the theatre. And she turned down the now infamous March 2006 Vanity Fair cover on which she was to appear nude with fellow it girls Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johanssen while fashion designer Tom Ford fully clothed appeared to lust after them (despite him being openly gay) so she at least has some principles that she s sticking to. Not removing her clothes for publicity s sake of course doesn t break her vanilla image either.

All of this could change of course with her role on the greatly anticipated second season of HBO s crime drama True Detective in which she s the only top billed woman alongside Colin Farrell Vince Vaughan and Taylor Kitsch. It could very well offer audiences to see another side of McAdams and if the show s a success it might broaden her range in terms of the roles in which she s cast. While I haven t seen the show yet early reviews make it clear that this is another side of McAdams altogether. One reviewer at Uproxx describes her character Ani Bezzerides as a hard drinking hard gambling porn loving knife weilding daughter of a hippie. (I mean Rachel McAdams as an e cigarette smoking hardened cop going up against those three dudes Sign me up.)

That s not all she has in store this year she s co starring in Antoine Fuqua s gritty boxing movie Southpaw as well as Tom McCarthy s Spotlight as an intrepid Boston Globe reporter who helps uncover a sexual abuse scandal within the Catholic church but True Detective may be the thing that redefines her career allowing audiences to see her as a truly versatile actress who can play more than the nice romantic lead.

Qualcomm engineer to compete on ABCs BattleBots

SAN DIEGO Deep inside the Qualcomm campus you'd think that robots have taken over.

Donald Hutson is in charge of the robots at Qualcomm's Robotics Research Lab.

Do I like my job Yeah that's an understatement Hutson said.

Hutson is one of the senior support staff engineers.

Basically what I do here is try to innovate and push the boundaries with what can be done with high end processors he said.

Hutson has created robots such as 'The Snapdraggon Cargo' and 'The Snapdraggon Rover.'

They are robotics that could become everyday parts of our lives but for now the retail value is priceless Hutson said.

At night Hutson's robots take on a meaner look.

I call it LockJaw Hutson said.

LockJaw is a 250 pound temper tantrum. It's a combination of smarts and muscle.

We've got to make them smarter safer and more durable Hutson said.

Hutson works on his robots in a safe and secure testing lab.

LockJaw is built for battle which is perfect for 'BattleBots.'

'BattleBots' is a two men enter one man leaves television tournament on ABC. The show is for robots and the smart guys who build them.

The idea of celebrating engineers as rock stars is long overdue said Hutson. I think I'm a poster child of doing what you love every day.

The Last Ship Season 2 Premiere Recap Guns N Doses

I was rather hesitant to cue up my screener for The Last Ship s two hour Season 2 premiere (and to do so I even scrapped plans to run down the street to catch Inside Out grrr) given how the TNT drama s freshman run ended.

RELATEDTNT s Proof Is There Life After the Premiere

As Season 1 closed I was surprised to see the Nathan James get safely to port so soon into the series and I frankly dreaded the idea of the show becoming land locked as our Navy heroes butt heads with some misguided headstrong armed to the teeth ersatz government based out of Baltimore. I ve seen that movie before on Revolution Falling Skies

As such you can imagine that I came away from the Season 2 premiere quite pleasantly surprised as well as quite entertained.

RELATEDFalling Skies Final Battle Noah Wyle Previews Strong Finish But Warns Not Everybody Makes It

Picking up where things left off Aboard the Nathan James Slattery Doc Rios Co. tended to wounded Quincy while keeping the primordial hidden from Avocet boss lady Amy Granderson s goons. The rest of the crew was corralled but not before O Connor made a run for it and jumped overboard. He d ultimately shimmy up the anchor chain and signal to his comrades that he was back on board. Quincy meanwhile barely hung on by a thread when his captors then threatened wife Kelly he claimed he hid the primordial before ripping open his wound to bleed out.

On shore Chandler and Green infiltrated the Olympia complex (where the dead were being burned for power/electricity) while CMC Jeter kept watch over Chandler s dad and kids as they holed up in an abandoned apartment. The only drama on that front The son upchucked a bit and developed a fever forcing Jeter to make a pharmacy run and in turn get spotted by a street rat who ratted him out to some Avocet goons. But Jeter and Papa Chandler fended them off.

Inside Avocet Rachel made a deal with Granderson that if she were allowed to disseminate the few doses of the cure she had handy to undesirables on the street she d help Avocet manufacture more as long as it s dispensed more broadly.

During the attack on Olympia Chandler made nice with an asset of the warlord Thorwald then met with the rebellion leader himself. Operating off the enemy of my enemy principle the gents allied to infiltrate Avocet from underneath while Green powered off the lights which happened just in time since Granderson s lead scientist was about to extract stem cell somethingoranother from Foster s unborn baby to act as a new primordial sample

RELATEDTNT s Titans Aims to be Very True to Groundbreaking Superhero Property Eyes Summer Start Date

Back on the ship Miller and Cruz sneaked off to meet up with O Connor and they stormed the armory while Slattery slipped away to monitor and assist in their takeover from a comm room. Since many Avocet troops had left to help deal with the Olympia attack the Nathan James soon enough was reclaimed.

The seizing of Avocet meanwhile was abetted by Tex who had gotten wind of the new world order and infiltrated the complex as a security guard where he promptly got a bead on and protected Rachel. During the takeover Alisha got shot while Thorwald was fatally felled as he broached Mama Granderson s office. In the end Chandler faced off on the roof with Granderson whom he urged to surrender seeing as her only choices were trial or death. She agreed to surrender but then jabbed herself with the toxic cocktail her people had been handing out to the unworthy citizens.

(Note If you read my Season 1 finale recap you may recall me wondering How key of Season 2 players can Titus Welliver and Alfre Woodard be if they both are headlining new series Amazon s Bosch and NBC s State of Affairs Though the latter series wound up being moot that question was sure enough answered )

With Amy Granderson dead myriad minions gunned down and the people she was providing harbor to now wise to her insidious grand plan the Avocet threat was neutralized as the Nathan James crew gathered to bid farewell to those they lost now wary of the dangers and surprises potentially lurking at home on land.

Ballers premiere react Can you smell what the Rock is financial consulting

Fresh from saving people from an earthquake in San Andreas and diving headlong into a remake of Big Trouble in Little China Dwayne Johnson headlines his first television series in Ballers a funny charming and surprisingly in depth look at life in and after the NFL.

Johnson plays Spencer Strasmore a retired journeyman defensive end who seems haunted by an injury inflicted on a rival. Still young and needing something else to do he has taken up at a financial consulting firm where cohort Joe (Rob Corddry) hopes he can reel in pro athletes who want to do business with one of their own. The premiere also introduces us to a handful of Johnson s other friends and cohorts including a bad boy wide receiver looking to make a comeback an offensive lineman turned car salesman the GM of the local Miami Dolphins (played gamely by The West Wing and Psych veteran Dule Hill) and an over extended rookie who taps Johnson for a loan so he can provide for a houseful of hangers on. The car salesman played by Omar Benson Miller is immediately the most compelling We find him slightly overweight watching what appears to be a TV special about head injuries talking to his wife about getting work and starting a family. He tells the world he doesn t miss the field and is done with that part of his life though we can already tell he still feels the pull of the pigskin.

Ballers wouldn t be much of anything without Johnson whose boundless charisma radiates from every pore and provides an endlessly compelling screen presence. But it isn t just a series of smiles and muscle flexes as the writing offers a pretty clear eyed look at what pro football life is like off the field. Though they are often perceived as over affluent crybabies professional athletes are often exploited especially in the NFL where the average career lasts a shade over three years contracts are not guaranteed and retired players are forced to face debilitating life altering injuries without any financial or emotional assistance from their employers. Though Ballers doesn t attack these things explicitly (this is a comedy after all) all these ideas lurk in the background and the fact that those issues (along with problems with domestic violence) were a huge part of the last football season make it instantly a show of our times.

Many critics have been quick to dismiss Ballers as some sort of extension of Entourage. Although I was not one of them it is a fair surface observation the show is produced by Steven Levinson who also worked on Entourage and there are a lot of fancy cars lavish parties and a cast of mostly dudes. Heck the first episode features a major plot point wherein a player has sex with a stripper in a bathroom at a club. But Ballers is too funny and has too much potential to dismiss. And if all else fails the Rock will flash his smile and make everything all right.

Jake Lloyd former child actor who played Anakin Skywalker arrested

After doing his best to avoid unwanted media attention for years former child actor Jake Lloyd is back in the spotlight this week after being arrested for speeding and evading police.

Colleton County Sheriff Sgt. Kyle Strickland told NBC News Sunday that officers arrested Lloyd 26 on Wednesday for failing to stop for officers and speeding as well as driving without a license. His bond is set at $10 700 NBC reported.

When arrested Lloyd told police his name was Jake Broadbent the AP reported. However a former talent agent confirmed Lloyd s identity with the police the AP reported and the birthday and hometown of the arrested man and Lloyd are the same.

After receiving a report of reckless driving at about 2 p.m. Wednesday of last week police caught up with Lloyd s car on Interstate 95 and he started to drive away Strickland told NBC News. Lloyd reportedly hit speeds of 100 miles per hour as he attempted to evade police by among other things driving off road and into a wooded area and hitting several small trees before stopping.

He starts passing cars on the double yellow line Strickland said. He s going head on into oncoming traffic.

Strickland told NBC that it is unclear why Lloyd tried to evade police and that he didn t appear to be on drugs or intoxicated.

Lloyd is best known for his role as Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace. According to IMDB.com Lloyd had several acting credits before then including the Jingle All the Way and television show ER.

However his Star Wars role made him too recognizable and brought Lloyd a wave of unwanted attention he said in a 2012 interview with The Daily Telegraph. With staggering amounts of interview requests plus other students constantly taunting and bringing up the movie to him Lloyd said his life was a living hell.

Other children were really mean to me he told the Telegraph. They would make the sound of a light saber every time they saw me. It was totally mad.

The experience caused Lloyd to quit acting his last credit coming in 2005 according to IMDB.com.

Child stars having run ins with the law or other issues isn t an uncommon occurrence. Mara Wilson who starred in movies like Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire as a young girl wrote in Cracked two years ago that entering the spotlight at a young age creates a variety of problems.

A lot of child stars feel like they ll never get past what they did as a kid that their character has taken over their life she wrote. Jake Lloyd might have been melodramatic when he said The Phantom Menace ruined his life but it does kind of suck that years later he s still seen as a punchline.

True Detective Season Premiere Recap Reloaded

Created and written by novelist Nic Pizzolatto HBO's anthology series True Detective barreled through the zeitgeist on the backs of career best performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson strong direction by Cary Fukunaga a bracing level of bone deep nihilism and a nightmare inducing web of creepy Lovecraftian local color. The suspense kept pulses pounding through each episode while the drive to decipher its mysteries had viewers doing literary loop the loops for the rest of the week. What could have been just a well made portrait of dangerous men in a compelling time and place Bayou walk Empire basically exploded into a cultural phenomenon. Calling its first season a Southern Gothic rollercoaster ride is both the kindest and the cruelest compliment you can pay it.

Sidebar Is 'True Detective''s New Season Truly Defective

But as exciting as a rollercoaster's ups and downs may be it doesn't actually take you anywhere in the end. Those eight hours of dark crime fiction shouldn't be dismissed. But the more distance we got from the madness of the moment the more concerns about the material mounted Pizzolatto's over fondness for his macho main characters say or his insistence that picking these protagonists prevented him from creating women characters with depth. Ultimately the whole thing revealed itself to be a stunning act of television prestidigitation With so many of the factors that made that happen no longer in place it's all but impossible to repeat the trick again.

That's the dilemma facing Season Two. Even aside from all the hurdles inherent in setting up an anthology series' second go round new story new setting new characters as well as new actors and directors too so many of the techniques its initial incarnation used are off the table. And if this premiere episode is any indication the results are not promising.

Wisely eschewing serial killer symbolism (at this point you can't swing a severed arm without hitting a television show combining murder mysteries and stag antler imagery) True Detective 2.0's story stays focused on the political corruption angle relocated from the swamps of Louisiana to the sprawl of Los Angeles. Here we find Detective Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) a down on his luck divorced drunk from the City of Vinci. The cop is paying off a debt to local crime boss Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) by serving as his enforcer when he's not busy bullying his own terrified son. Elsewhere Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) a detective with the Ventura County Sherrifs grits her teeth through unsatisfying penny ante assignments while heavily scarred war veteran Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) uses his job as CHiPS motorcycle cop to sublimate his suicidal impulses. After establishing their gigs and lives the episode brings the three police together when Woodrugh stumbles across a corpse one who happens to be a missing person from Semyon's corrupt political machine.

The plot is admirably dense but you wouldn't call it compelling. And absent Fukunaga's touch the imagery courtesy of Fast Furious franchise veteran Justin Lin lacks the first season's immersive quality. Only a handful of shots linger in the brain at all the sight of Farrell's character in a ski mask turning to the camera and shushing a witness a couple of arterial overhead shots of the freeway system a recurring sequence of a corpse in wraparound shades being driven around in the back of a car. Given that the first showed up in the trailer the second is a no brainer for any L.A. story and the third is pretty much an homage to David Lynch's underexplored Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive California noir period it's a weak showing.

The performances can't carry the weight either. Colin Farrell's bloated belligerent alcoholic cop is shall we say not exactly a stretch. Kitsch and McAdams aren't asked for much more than being younger photogenic and better at keeping their obvious demons under wraps around others. Vaughn hands in some of the episode's best work watch his eyes which radiate genuine unspoken concern over Velcoro's sorry state when the two of them meet up near the end of the episode. Yet he's also asked to deliver gangster dialogue that sounds cribbed from a video game cut scene It'd take a Brando to make clunkers like This filth hurt your woman or This place is based on a codependency of interests or A good woman mitigates our baser tendencies sound halfway passable.

As two of those three examples indicate True Detective's woman trouble has hardly improved. McAdams' character is introduced in her underwear storming out of the bedroom after freaking out her boyfriend by apparently requesting something a bit too wild. Both she and Kitsch's character experience sexual dysfunction as a shorthand for their psychological issues but in his case he can't get it up without Viagra it's telling how the worst problem a man can have in the series' world is failure to perform while for a woman it's performing too aggressively.

Sidebar 'True Detective' Finale Recap The End

Certainly that's reflected in the females Woodrugh encounters a speeding starlet who gets him suspended with false accusations of soliciting sexual favors and a girlfriend (also introduced in her underwear) who we've barely seen for 30 seconds before she says It's been a week Mr. Policeman get that dick over here. Can't she see he's suffering Well no because he saves that for his long solo night rides on his bike the wind against his face making for the hour's most unintentionally hilarious visual.

Worse still is the emotional contract the show asks us to sign regarding Velcoro and Semyon. A flashback shows the pair first connecting when the latter provides the former with information about the suspect in his wife's rape hence the this filth hit your woman bit. Given what we've seen of Velcoro's subsequent behavior it's easy to imagine what he did with this knowledge. It's much harder to know how the actual victim felt given that we never see his wife hear her or even learn her name in the episode. The show asks us to believe that a rape is fundamentally the story of the abusive man who avenges her (when he's not menacing children himself) a repeat of Season One's unfortunate white knight theme. Why must we accept stories about violence in which its perpetrators are its heroes Unless and until it answers that question True Detective risks simply being a one season wonder.

Andre Ward Beats Paul Smith in Long Awaited Return to Ring

As soon as Andre Ward found his stride following his lengthy layoff the fight quickly came to an end.

Ward made a triumphant return to the ring and delighted his home crowd when he stopped England's Paul Smith in the ninth round Saturday night in a nontitle fight.

It took some time to get the ring rust off Ward said. I started with the jab. I wanted to come out big bang and get a first round KO but I have a great coach and he told me to take my time and the knockout will come.

Ward (28 0 15 knockouts) was fighting for the first time in 19 months because of a protracted legal dispute with his former promoter the late Dan Goosen.

He dominated from the start against the former British champion Smith (35 6) winning every round on all three judges' scorecards. Smith's corner threw in the white towel to stop the fight in the ninth round with Smith's face covered with blood.

I know there's another level I can be at where I'm not thinking about anything Ward said. There's another level of sharpness and being crisp that I have. ... I felt like I did good tonight but I know I have better.

Smith spent most of the fight in defensive mode trying to block Ward's many punches instead of throwing many of his own. Smith did stagger Ward with a big right hand in the seventh but Ward responded with a flurry and Smith was cut late in the round.

I know what he was trying to do Ward said. He was trying to lure me in then hit me with the big right hand. He hit me with a couple of good shots but he didn't hurt me.

Ward landed more big punches in the eighth as blood started dripping down the left side of Smith's face. The round ended with a stare down between the two fighters to the delight of the partisan crowd of 9 016.

Another cut opened in the ninth as Smith's face was covered with blood before the fight was called at 1 46 of the round on a technical knockout after trainer Joe Gallagher threw in the towel.

Smith was taking unnecessary punishment Gallagher said. Andre kept cutting open that cut over his eye. Blood was pooling over his eye. It was a war we didn't want to continue.

Smith said he thought he broke his nose on Ward's final combination before the fight was stopped.

The towel couldn't have come soon enough Smith said.

Ward had not fought since winning a lopsided unanimous decision against Edwin Rodriguez to defend his WBA super middleweight title in November 2013. The absence from the ring stemmed from the dispute with Goosen who died in September 2014.

The fight was just Ward's second since beating Carl Froch in December 2011 in the Super Six super middleweight tournament final. Ward also dealt with a shoulder injury that forced him to the sideline before the dispute with Goosen.

After Goosen's death Ward reached an undisclosed settlement with the promoter's family and signed with Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports. He was using the fight against Smith as a tuneup to work off some of the rust that had accumulated.

I'm just so happy to be back in the boxing ring Ward said. It's been a long time. It was creeping up on two years.

Smith weighed in for the 172 pound fight at 176.4 pounds on Friday. ESPN reported Smith's weight was 184.4 pounds at a second weigh in Saturday.

It was a genuine mistake Smith said. I apologized to the team. My fault.

Blame umpires not Tabata for Scherzers lost chance at perfection

Max Scherzer was robbed. It s not often you can say that about a pitcher that just threw a no hitter to pitch his team to victory but it was true of Nationals ace Max Scherzer on Saturday. Scherzer had a perfect game through 8 2/3 innings when pinch hitter Jose Tabata stepped to the plate to bat for reliever Vance Worley representing the potential 27th out of what would have been just the 24th perfect game in major league history and first since Felix Hernandez s in August 2012. True to form Tabata came out swinging fouling off Scherzer s first two pitches to put Scherzer just one strike away from perfection. Trying to get the aggressive 26 year old Venezuelan to chase Scherzer threw a slider in the dirt and a 97 mile per hour fastball up out of the zone. Tabata took the first and checked his swing on the second to even the count at 2 2. He then fouled off three more pitches before Scherzer came back inside with a slider. Rather than evade the pitch however Tabata dropped the pad on his left elbow below his waist directly into the path of the pitch breaking up the perfect game with a hit by pitch.

It shouldn t have been allowed. Per Major League Baseball s official rules a batter is entitled to first base when he is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless ... the batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball.

Tabata not only made no attempt to avoid the pitch he made a very deliberate attempt to be hit by it. For comparison s sake the image on the left below shows Tabata taking the slider inside for ball one earlier in the at bat. The image on the right shows him being hit by the pitch. Note how Tabata is jumping back and out of the way of the pitch on the left a motion which caused his upper body to drop slightly from his ready hitting position but still left his elbow above his belt buckle. On the right he is doing something different entirely. He s sticking his padded elbow in the way of the pitch.

By baseball s rules the pitch that broke up Scherzer s perfect game should have been ruled a ball and the at bat should have continued with a full count. That doesn t necessarily mean Scherzer would have completed the perfect game. The full count would have been just the third of the game for Scherzer who was at that point had thrown 103 pitches. One more ball would have ended the bid via a walk and Tabata who was 2 for 8 against Scherzer in his career prior to that at bat could still have connected for a hit that would have left Scherzer with neither a perfect game nor a no hitter.

Still it was clear as day that the umpires blew the call.

I say umpires because while one could argue that the view of home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski who is in just his second season as a full time major league umpire was blocked by catcher Wilson Ramos s glove the other umpires Sean Barber Mark Wegner and Mike Winters should have spoken up about what they saw. If none of them noticed Tabata s blatant move to be hit by the pitch they are no more innocent of failing to get the call right.

MLB One could point out that neither Scherzer who immediately threw his head back in disappointment upon the pitch hitting Tabata nor any one else on the Nationals protested the call. That s true though manager Matt Williams said after the game that his lack of protest was due to the fact that with the no hitter still intact he didn t want to disrupt Scherzer s rhythm.

The final word on the subject however must be Scherzer s and Scherzer blamed himself not Tabata for the hit by pitch. Just didn t finish the pitch he told the Washington Post after the game. It backed up on me and clipped him. It s just one of those things that happened.

It s worth noting that whether the batter made any attempt to avoid being touched by the ball is not reviewable under MLB s current replay rules. That s primarily because it is a judgment call on the part of the umpire and not something that a replay can answer definitively (though in this case the replay was as close to definitive as it can get such a situation). Thus there was an extremely high chance that any argument would have been fruitless with the upside being a full count that would have left Tabata in a strong position to break up the perfect game (coming into that at bat hitters had a .412 on base percentage against Scherzer this season once the count went full).

MORE MLB Scherzer loses perfection late still spins no no

And so rather than being one of 24 major leaguers to throw a perfect game Scherzer joined an even more exclusive club becoming just the 12th man to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning and just the third pitcher ever to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning but hold on to complete the no hitter. The first two hold interesting parallels to Scherzer. New York Giants stalwart George Hook Wiltse hit the 27th man he faced with a pitch on July 4 1908 losing his perfect game but retiring the next hitter. Wiltse and Scherzer are the only pitchers ever to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth by hitting the 27th batter. Unlike Scherzer however Wiltse wasn t done after getting the last out of the ninth. His game was scoreless after nine innings. Wiltse needed the Giants to score a run in the top of the ninth which they did and to pitch another hitless inning bottom of the 10th which he did to get his no hitter.

Wiltse was also reportedly the victim of a blown call. The pitch prior to the one that his 27th batter was said to have been a strike on a 1 2 count that home plate umpire Cy Rigler mistakenly called a ball according to no less authoritative a source than Rigler himself. The other pitcher to lose a perfect game on his 27th batter but complete the no hitter also believes he was the victim of a blown strike call though in his case both the umpire and video evidence admittedly from a poor angle to judge balls and strikes disagree.

On September 2 1972 the Cubs Milt Pappas was where Scherzer would have been if the pitch that hit Tabata was ruled a ball one strike away from perfection with a full count on his 27th batter. Pappas thought he had Padres pinch hitter Larry Stahl struck out with the payoff pitch but second year umpire Bruce Froemming disagreed calling ball four and sending Stahl to first base. Pappas flew into a rage but still managed to get the next man to pop out to get the no hitter. One can imagine Pappas had the image of the final pitch of Don Larsen s perfect game in the 1956 World Series in his head an outside pitch on a check swing that could have gone either way when Froemming called the pitch and not the moment. Still it looks low and away to me.

Of course there was one other perfect game that was famously ruined by a blown call on the final batter. That being Tigers righty Armando Galarraga s bid against Cleveland on June 2 2010. Galarraga got his 27th man to ground out to first but veteran umpire Jim Joyce blew the call something he like Rigler admitted tearfully after the game. Indeed the replay was clear as day. The runner was out by roughly three feet. Had that game happened after the implementation of instant replay last year it would have been a perfect game. As such I tend to think of it as baseball s only 28 out perfect game though officially it was a one hitter.

Scherzer s game was neither of those things but it did raise some questions of sportsmanship. If Tabata did indeed get hit by that pitch intentionally which to my eye he did was he wrong to have done so One argument says that in a 6 0 game the Pirates chances of a comeback and indeed the run Tabata represented were not significant enough to warrant such a questionable action. The flip side of that says that baseball has no clock the Pirates are a good team Scherzer was over 100 pitches on a hot afternoon in Washington DC and that getting on base by any means necessary was Tabata s job as a pinch hitter in that situation.

MLB That debate recalls the furor that erupted in May 2001 when Curt Schilling took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Padres in San Diego and with one out in the eighth Padres catcher Ben Davis bunted for a single to break up the bid. Davis was demonized for the move but his team was trailing just 2 0 at the time. Bunting for a hit brought the tying run to the plate in a pitchers duel between Schilling and Adam Eaton both of whom would complete the game. That tying run meanwhile was represented by right fielder Bubba Trammell a legitimate home run threat who would hit 25 homers that year. Davis s bunt was a much more justifiable baseball play than Tabata getting in the way of Scherzer s pitch but Davis still caught hell for it.

I don t have much regard for baseball s unwritten rules but I ll admit that what Tabata did Saturday afternoon bothered me. Still I don t see Tabata as the villain here. Yes he may have gone against baseball etiquette by sticking his elbow in front of a pitch down 6 0 with the opposing pitcher one strike away from a perfect game but there s a rule on the books that allows the umpires to disallow the result. That they failed to do so bothers me far more than the fact that Tabata put them in the position to have to make that judgment in the first place.

How Pixar Picked the 5 Core Emotions of Inside Outs Star

Monsters toys cars Pixar's protagonists are often nonhuman. In the studio's latest movie though the main characters aren't even physical beings. The central players of Inside Out hitting theaters today are emotions Joy Fear Sadness Anger and Disgust inhabiting a young girl's mind and brought to life by a murderer's row of voice talent like Amy Poehler and Bill Hader. But while casting was a breeze picking the emotions wasn't. (Schadenfreude was an early contender.) Turns out there's no consensus on how many emotions there actually are so director Pete Docter and his team turned to an expert they'd worked with before.

Early in the movie's five year production Docter invited psychologist Paul Ekman to brief the crew on the nature of emotions. According to Ekman who has had a long and sometimes controversial career there are seven emotions with universal facial signals those that ended up in the movie plus contempt and surprise. For story purposes Docter needed simplicity five he says was just enough for dissension and entertainment.

Ekman applauds the movie for teaching kids and parents alike about emotion that understanding he says allows us to choose what we feel rather than being controlled by our emotions. Then again if we could choose what we feel we wouldn't cry so much during Pixar movies.
