Steve Harveys Celebrity Family Feud opens with Braxtons vs. Andersons

CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD Anthony Anderson vs Toni Braxton and Monica Potter vs Curtis Stone The series premiere of Celebrity Family Feud will feature actor Anthony Anderson s ( black ish ) family vs. 7 time Grammy Award winning artist Toni Braxton and her sisters. (ABC/Adam Taylor)TONI BRAXTON STEVE HARVEY ANTHONY ANDERSON

By RODNEY HO/ rho ajc.com originally filed Monday June 22 2015

Toni Braxton who used to live in Atlanta brought her sisters to battle Anthony Anderson s family in the first episode of ABC s Celebrity Family Feud hosted by part time Atlantan Steve Harvey.

Both families are playing for charity. The episodes were shot earlier this month in Los Angeles although Harvey shoots the regular episodes here in Atlanta. And two of Braxton s sisters still live in Atlanta.

Despite a slow start from Toni her family lifted her up and even she got a couple of answers right near the end. But credit Towanda and Tamar for getting enough right answers to win Fast Money and raise $25 000 for Lupus LA (since Toni has lupus.)

Sorry to say this but $25 000 seems awfully chintzy for a broadcast network giving out money for charity. I m just sayin . Where s Donald Trump when you need him (Oh wait we know that )

Things got down and dirty quickly from the first question Name something a nude magician might pull a rabbit out of.

Anderson His a

Toni was so flummoxed she didn t have an answer.

His mom Doris then said nuts.

This show is going to hell Harvey said. Indeed that garnered a big fat X.

Later Anderson said you can be naked and wear a hat. I ve done it That was the No. 1 answer.

The Braxtons had a chance to steal but Toni botched it by blurting out foot without getting proper feedback from her sisters. That wasn t on the list. Points went to the Andersons.

Question No. 2 with Tamar vs. Doris Name something the wife would not like to see the ex husband buy after the divorce.

Tamar got the No. 1 answer with car.

Trina who just got divorced said emphatically a ring for another woman. That was the No. 2 answer.

Toni uttered a new woman. Shockingly this was up there as a mail order bride.

The sisters almost cleared the board with six out of seven answers. Harvey laughed after Trina gave a bad answer ( a car seat ) and the sisters were not supportive. The tradition Family Feud members are supposed to clap and say good answer no matter how terrible the utterance.

Ultimately Anderson s answer motorcyle was rejected. The missing answer was a street whore.

The Braxtons move ahead 93 to 88.

Question 3 Top 7 answers on the board. To 100 men Name an animal more well endowed than you

Trina Elephant. Amazingly just 13 people answered that. But it was No. 2 and Trina won after Derrick s gorilla was a big fat zero.

Towanda confidently gave the No. 1 answer horse. Traci s giraffe got an X.

Toni tried hippo and received zip. Tamar said dog and her sisters were skeptical. It came in No. 3 and Tamar was vindicated. What the world is coming to Traci said.

Trina s bull came in No. 6. Towanda opted for walrus. It has the biggest penis. I looked it up But it didn t make the cut.

Anderson went for donkey and they won the points. The missing answers whale and lion.

The Andersons had a lead. But the last round typically can win the day.

Triple points Name a job just because they aren t good looking enough.

Towanda s answer Model was No. 1.

Traci goes for stripper. That was No. 4.

Toni (uh oh) picks news anchor. Surprise No. 3.

Tamar says actress for the win. And the Braxtons clear the board

Tamar and Towanda opt for fast money. Towanda was up first.

The fast money questions to 100 women.

After how dates do you start wearing sweats Towanda s answer 6 (0)

What is something people look for on Craig s List A car (26)

Name a pie that starts with the letter P. (37)

Name something a guy likes to do while watching the Super Bowl Eat food. (36)

A place where you find an aisle. A kitchen. (0)

Three good answers two bad ones. Not bad. 99 points.

Tamar ended up with two okay answers no answer on one and two great answers to seal the victory.

That would be four dates (11 points. Best answer was 10) a job on Craig s list (10) nothing for pie drinking beer for the Super Bowl (44) and the seal the deal answer of supermarket for aisle (57).

True Detective could drive you to drink. Its second season (Sunday on HBO) arrives under cover of such darkness and psychic pain it seems to beg its audience to keep a bottle close by in a display of unity with its hard drinking protagonists.

You tying one on asks Frank Semyon (series star Vince Vaughn) an enterprising but beleaguered mobster as he sits across from tormented Detective Ray Velcoro (co star Colin Farrell) and watches him drain glass after glass of Frank's pricey Johnny Walker Blue.

Not particularly grunts Velcoro filling his glass again.

Of course if you were to tie one on while watching True Detective you might realize you're not the sort of high functioning alcoholic represented by Detective Velcoro who serves the city of Vinci a corrupt industrially ravaged neighbor of Los Angeles. Or by Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) a hard bitten Ventura County sheriff's detective.

Stick to soft drinks. True Detective this season even more than last demands a viewer's full attention to absorb the twisting multilayered puzzle taunting Ray and Ani along with Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) a troubled war veteran and California Highway Patrol motorcycle cop as well as Frank whose make or break him real estate deal is thrown in jeopardy as they all converge on a pivotal event the eerie murder of a Vinci city official.

That in a nutshell is what this season's True Detective encompasses law enforcement officers (the series title still applies) and attempts to find answers to a crime whose search is complicated by ulterior motives. (Hear Ray addressing a superior in a future episode One question. Am I supposed to solve this or not )

But what True Detective is this season may be no more important than how it differs from last season which of course was a triumph starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as they tackled in effect not one but two roles apiece former Louisiana State Police detectives being interrogated in 2012 about a homicide case that they were seen in flashbacks working in 1995.

Although Vaughn and Farrell are the nominal co leads this season and excellent the new saga doesn't call for last year's two man actors' showcase in a dual time frame. These co stars are fused into this season's larger ensemble in the present tense.

What truly ties the True Detective seasons together the voice and vision of Nic Pizzolatto. He created the series wrote all last year's episodes and has repeated that feat for the upcoming eight hours. And he apparently has never heard the expression If it ain't broke don't fix it having ditched the buddy drama format that worked so well to do his thing in other different ways this time.

How he's done it should become increasingly evident beyond the three episodes made available for preview. But he has clearly retained last year's weird fiction atmospherics of the Louisiana bayou despite relocating to an urban world. In this factory and refinery choked corner of L.A. the macabre is in evidence even in the interstitial aerial shots of tangled freeways where cars look like corpuscles coursing through blood vessels.

As before Pizzolatto's characters seem fated to be cruelly denied whatever they want most.

Frank wants a child with his lovely supportive wife Jordan (Kelly Reilly).

Paul the highway patrolman wants to be returned to duty as a motorcycle cop but that seems unlikely after he gets into a scrape.

Ray wants a comfortable relationship with his young son which seems as far out of reach as this unmet dream I used to want to be an astronaut he says. But astronauts don't even go to the moon anymore.

Yet another way True Detective stays true to its past its darkness.

Even darker than last year this season sets out on one very black journey both visually and tonally. A key scene in the season premiere occurs in a bar perhaps the dimmest bar in TV history where the entertainer a wan young woman with a guitar sings maybe the most melancholy song ever heard. Its refrain This is my least favorite life.

Ahead True Detective is absorbed with least favorite lives which makes it just as fascinating if not more so than ever. But be warned You may long for a flashlight.

You Dont Need a Real Dad to Celebrate Fathers Day

In the last month I've lost count of the amount of emails pinging into my inbox all with one thing in common the title. Celebrate your dad this Father's Day one screams. Make Dad's day another exclaims promoting cheap wine and chocolate last minute gift ideas chosen especially for you.

Except really they aren't chosen especially for me are they They're generated by some computer that has no idea whether I'm close to my dad or whether I even have a father. As it happens my father died nearly eight years ago but it isn't that making those emails grate. It's how exclusive their terms are all referring to that brilliant dad who does so much. One refers vaguely to that someone special but the others keep the preserve of the nuclear family an all American all British ideal.

Sure that's true for a lot of people but in this modern family era where diverse family situations should be accepted doesn't it say something that Father's Day is still promoted in a cookie cutter holiday kind of way Anything outside the cutter doesn't quite make the grade. Funny because Father's Day isn't and shouldn't be to just celebrate our biological fathers. It's for children teenagers spouses grandchildren to celebrate that person who plays the role of a father in our lives regardless of whether we call them dad or not. I call my mum's fianc e by his first name but that doesn't mean I won't be celebrating Father's Day with him as I'm sure thousands of teenagers will be doing with their respective step fathers this Sunday.

I mean I get it I really do. Father's Day is commercialized and these companies aim to maximize on that. In the midst of all the greeting cards and emails though we shouldn't forget that Father's Day isn't a preserve of an elite group of people who have a father. Anyone who has someone who supports them in the way a Father does can celebrate it. Nowadays a father isn't so simple to define you only have to step into a high school classroom to hear about the myriad of different relationships.

So Happy Father's Day for everyone who wants to celebrate it and who should.

Celebrity Family Feud spinoff game show premieres Sunday

Comedian Steve Harvey is bringing the fun of long running game show Family Feud to ABC with a twist. His spinoff show features celebrity families.

He knows a lot of the contestants taking part in the summer series but he promises not to go easy on his friends.

Guess what They're going to make a mistake. There's no way you're going to know all the stuff up on this board. You just can't Harvey said.

Family Feud has been around since 1976. Harvey has his own theory about the show's longevity.

Everybody can play. Everybody can't play 'Jeopardy.' Everybody can't play 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire ' Harvey said. It's really a game about opinions. It's nothing factual so you can sit at home and be smarter than any contestant on TV.

We'll see who's smarter when celebrity families face off against one another. Round one pits Toni Braxton against Anthony Anderson.

It's competitive but all for a good cause.

These are busy people. To take some time out of their schedule stop shooting a movie or taping a show give up their off time to come in and give all the money to their favorite charity that's pretty cool Harvey said.

Celebrity Family Feud debuts Sunday night at 8 p.m. on ABC7.

The Last Ship Season 2 Premiere Spoilers

(TNT)

Tonight was a two hour season 2 premiere of The Last Ship on TNT at 9 00 p.m. ET and we ve got a full recap on the episode for you reporting it live as it airs. The crew aboard the USS Nathan James is being taken over by Granderson s troopers. As Quincy fights to stay alive his family is alerted that they must keep their connection to Quincy a secret. As Amy Granderson s men gain control of the ship they search for the cure to the deadly virus. In the meantime Tom Chandler is hiding out with his family and crew member Burke. As Slattery helps to save Quincy he realizes that the primordial strain of the cure has been hidden from the troopers. Jeter and Green meet up with Chandler. Dr. Rachel Scott is being held hostage by Granderson who is willing to negotiate with her because she needs Scott to get her lab up and running. Granderson allows Scott to go into the streets and treat some of the sick as per her request. Meanwhile a wounded Jeter stays with Chandler s family who has found shelter in a random apartment. Tex is trying to survive on the streets and comes across a kid defending himself. He lets Tex know about what Granderson has been up to. Chandler ends up hiding in the back of a truck filled with bodies in order to get inside the plant. Green and Burke are driving the truck wearing hazmat suits and watching people pick valuables off the dead bodies before they re burned. The two along with Chandler then take on the men at the plant.

As Dr. Scott helps cure the sick on the street one of Granderson s men tells Scott that he didn t know what Granderson was doing when she began her master plan. Scott is subjected to heartbreak as she s only able to treat a child and not the child s mother when she runs out of vaccines with the cure. In the meantime Chandler s family is worrying about him as well as their own survival and Chandler s son Sam gets sick with a fever and vomiting.

Chandler Burke and Green are introduced to a group of underground warlords who are also against Granderson. Chandler s plan is to cut off electricity causing panic in Granderson.

Quincy is being give an IV drip of adrenaline fluid and in the meantime three of the crew members have escaped the watch of the troopers and are loose on the ship. The troopers discover that Quincy s family is on the ship and Quincy s wife agrees to go with them as long as her daughter stays with the crew. They bring Quincy s wife up to see Quincy and threaten her life in order to make him reveal where the primordial strain of the cure is on the ship. Quincy apologizes to his wife and takes out the plug in his bullet hole so that he bleeds to death telling Granderson s men they ll never find it.

Granderson tells her daughter that Quincy ended his life and she requests that her daughter Alisha aids her in her efforts. Alisha tells her to surrender and that she will not help her.

The troopers discover that Foster is pregnant and they take her away after locking Slattery in a room which he escapes from into the ship. Granderson s doctors want to use her unborn child to extract the stem cells from the virus. Tex is disguised as a police officer and makes it inside Granderson s headquarters. He finds Scott who is being helped by one of Granderson s doctors. Scott and Tex see Foster being taken away and Scott realizes what the doctors are going to try to do. As the doctor is about to stab Foster with a cyringe the power goes out thanks to Green who is unaware of what s going on with Foster. Alisha also momentarily escapes her mother who is distracted by the power outage. One of the people in the operating room with Foster decides to help her out and release her restraints. Foster then stabs the doctor with the syringe just as Tex and Scott rescue her.

Back on the ship one of the crew has gotten his hands on a knife and has cut his restraints discreetly passing the knife on to the others so they can fight back at the troopers. Slattery has found his way into a control room on the ship and is able to monitor all the troopers as well as the crew members who are roaming the ship undetected. He happily sees them stocking up on guns. Slattery signals his men to let them know that he s watching them. In turn they let Slattery know that they have night vision equipment on so he cuts the power allowing his men to take out the troopers who have been guarding all their crew members.

Granderson has sealed off the exits of her headquarters upon hearing about what happened with Foster and has also called for a search for her daughter. Granderson s officers have also started to investigate the plant in efforts to get the power turned back on.

A local has let some of Granderson s men know that there s a family hiding out in an apartment. Chandler s family tries to hide but the men break in and they re forced to shoot the troopers. With that they leave the apartment. Tom Chandler and his group have met up with Scott Tex and Foster inside Granderson s headquarters. The warlords have also invaded. Granderson refuses to give up.

Chandler makes his way through Granderson s building rescuing people and Green is fending off troopers on his own at the power plant. Chandler orders Green to evacuate the plant. After leaving the plant Green is being chased and contacts Jeter for help. Chandler s dad tells Jeter to go help him and that he ll protect the children himself.

On the ship the crew has started to regain control. But at Granderson s headquarters chaos ensues. Alisha tries to rescue some of the people there but Granderson s announcement to not trust anyone in a Naval uniform turns them against Alisha. Alisha gets in a fight with one of Granderson s officers and ends up getting shot. Chandler Green Burke and the others find Alisha who has lost a lot of blood. In turn they take her with them.

Tex has taken out the security who was guarding Granderson s building allowing all the innocent people inside to evacuate. Slattery is discovered in the control room and fights for his life before the crew gains complete control of the ship.

Granderson comes face to face with the head of the warlords who ends up shot by one of her men. Chandler discovers him and as the man lays dying he tells Chandler that Granderson has fled to the roof. Chandler confronts Granderson on the roof and convinces her two guards to stand down. He then tells Granderson that her daughter was shot. Though upset by her daughter s condition and Chandler s words Granderson remains confident in her choices. Chandler demands that she shut down Olympia tells her troopers to stand down and that she goes with him quietly. Granderson reluctantly surrenders but says that Dr. Hamada told her that his vaccine caused a quick and painless death for the people. She said that she insisted on it. Granderson then reveals she has it on her before injecting herself with it and falling to the ground.

Chandler s family has been brought aboard the ship and Chandler sees the aftermath of Granderson s troopers taking over. Eight of their crew members lost their lives in the process. Slattery reveals to Scott that he Doc Rios and Quincy saved the primordial strain of the virus.

How True Detective fell from grace after just one season

Rachel McAdams Colin Farrell looking miserable in True Detective. (Lacey Terrell/HBO)

Though any critically adored show with a strong debut faces astronomical expectations for its second season HBO s True Detective which premiered its second season on Sunday night has experienced an unusual amount of backlash.

The crime noir anthology which last year starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as troubled cops trying to capture a serial killer in Louisiana was hailed as groundbreaking. McConaughey and Harrelson knocked it out of the park the direction was enthralling and creator Nic Pizzolatto s slow existential writing was strangely captivating. TrueDetectiveSeason2 was a popular hashtag for casting ideas even after the season ended. It landed a Best Drama nomination at the Emmys. Sure the show had its fair share of problems and criticism but it was widely heralded as excellent.

Review True Detective Season 2 New cast new setting same grim self seriousness

That s what makes the decidedly lukewarm reception for the second season so surprising it s rare that a prestige drama falls so fast. Though the premiere garnered some positive reviews there are also plenty of headlines like True Detective Season 2 is a grim ridiculous misfire and True Detective gets off to a slow stumbling start. More urgently the show is missing the buzz that would usually storm back with a highly anticipated show. Why the lack of excitement Here are five reasons why True Detective which now stars Vince Vaughn Rachel McAdams Colin Farell and Taylor Kitsch lost its edge so quickly.

Amid widespread praise quite a few critics also had some problems with the show from its terrible treatment of women dialogue that went from fascinating to utterly ridiculous to its extreme self importance. But with only eight episodes in the first season there wasn t enough time for those things to grate too much on people s nerves.

Now many critics are disappointed that not only did the creator ignore the criticism many issues are back in full force as if he zeroed in on the weakest aspects. It feels like creator Nic Pizzolatto has taken every criticism leveled against True Detective s first season and built a new show out of it The Week explains. That includes the women problem (Vanity Fair In the series s view women are vessels that bad men fill with their pain and moral rot. ) to the dialogue that simply grows tiresome (USA Today It too often sounds ridiculously pretentious and false. )

True Detective Season 2 is the embarrassing television show we deserve

Months after True Detective wrapped up a blog accused Pizzolatto of lifting the script s dialogue from author Thomas Ligotti. (Pizzolatto said he was inspired by Ligotti but the blog said he didn t give the author nearly enough credit.) The story blew up so much that HBO was forced to release a statement calling the charges ridiculous and Pizzolatto also denied it in the strongest terms. That happened around August or right around the time the TV Academy started its Emmy voting and a ton of negative headlines flowed into the pop culture sphere.

HBO also decided to submit the show to the Emmy Awards as a drama instead of a miniseries leading to tougher competition in a much more prestigious category. The show got 10 nominations including best drama best writing best directing and lead actor nods for McConaughey and Harrelson. However Breaking Bad mostly crushed the competition and True Detective only landed a major win for directing. The show and lead acting duo was also nominated at all the big shows (Golden Globes SAG Awards) but mostly went home empty handed. McConaughey finally got the prize at the Critics Choice Awards and TCA Awards.

Many were disappointed by the ending which was a lot of build up for a letdown of a conclusion which led some viewers to look back and question the whole series. As Vox put it the finale closed a sprawling conspiracy laden case with a fairly basic catch the bad guy chase scene and proved to be an emperor has no clothes moment for a lot of people.

The whole flashback/flash forward thing worked well in Season 1 but now it s just confusing. True Detective jumps around and is sadistically unhelpful to the casual viewer who would prefer to know what s happening as it happens The Post TV critic Hank Stuever writes.

It s no secret that the TV audience has anti hero fatigue and True Detective really goes for the whole troubled protagonist theme. Every character in True Detective Season 2 is miserable all the time and after awhile that s just really draining.

Holly Sonders tells critics to lighten up

Holly Sonders was one of the more notable aspects of FOX s coverage of the US Open.

The former Golf Channel personality was hired by FOX Sports to be a part of the network s expanding coverage which included broadcasting the US Open this year. She received plenty of camera time throughout the tournament as the reporter who interviewed golfers following their rounds.

Sonders who played golf at Michigan State was most notably on camera to interview Jordan Spieth after he captured the major. She was criticized for her two question interview one of which was about whether or not he had an outfit in case it went to a playoff Monday.

After receiving some negative feedback Sonders responded on Twitter.

And for those of u hating on my interview w/ Jordan..It's appropriate to end with a smile. He's the US Open champ Lighten up folks )

Aside from the interview with Spieth others complained about Sonders outfit which included a short skirt and golf shirt not your traditional reporter wear but the sort of thing you d see on the course.

In a past interview with Golf Digest Sonders explained her style.

I dress the way I dress because style is very important to me. I love being a girl. You can be a pit bull competitor. You can want to kick people s asses in every sport but you can still be feminine and still be sexy.

Sonders questions with Spieth certainly weren t the best but when you re given such a limited time to interview someone it s hard to really get in depth so we ll cut her some slack for it.
