Champions League Semifinals Final Dortmund 0 Real Madrid 2

Pierre Philippe Marcou/Agence France Presse Getty Images The Dortmund players celebrated with their fans after advancing to the final.

Brilliant in the first leg and brave in the second Borussia Dortmund advanced to the UEFA Champions League final on Tuesday but only after fighting off Real Madrid over 10 final frantic minutes.

Real Madrid won the match at its Santiago Bernab u stadium 2 0 on goals by Karim Benzema in the 83rd minute and Sergio Ramos in the 88th. But Dortmund advanced on aggregate 4 3 on the strength of its 4 1 victory in the first leg. That lead seemingly insurmountable a week ago proved to be just large enough.

The late goals part of a flurry of chances in the last 10 minutes and five tense minutes of added time brought the stadium to life after a frustrating night that saw Real Madrid dominate at times but misfire again and again. In the first 15 minutes alone ngel Di Mar a and Cristiano Ronaldo shot high Mesut zil fired wide and Gonzalo Higua n hit the Dortmund goalkeeper in the chest with a shot.

Allowed up off the mat Dortmund steadied itself and nearly turned the tables. Robert Lewandowski who had all four goals in the first leg hit the crossbar in the 50th minute and Ilkay G ndogan staring at a gaping net in the 61st managed to hit the only obstacle that would have kept out his shot the scrambling goalkeeper Diego L pez.

The late entry of Benzema Kak and Sami Khedira brought life to Madrid s frustrated attack and a comeback seemed possible when Benzema redirected a cross from zil. When Ramos scored into the top of the net five minutes later as the crowd chanted s se puede ( yes we can ) it even seemed likely. But Dortmund hunkered down and held on advancing to the Champions League final for the first time since it won the title in 1997.

They are expected to meet their Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich which will take a 4 0 aggregate lead into its second leg match at Barcelona on Wednesday. No team has come back to win after losing the first leg by four goals but as Dortmund learned Tuesday no lead is safe until the final whistle.

Real Madrid Manager Jos Mourinho widely expected to leave the club to return to England s Premier League next season blamed his team s performance in the first leg for its fate.

We have been punished for that Mourinho said not for tonight.

To follow the game as it happened read on. And make sure to come back Wednesday for the other second leg semifinal Bayern Munich at Barcelona.

Madrid can have no complaints about losing this semifinal to Dortmund. OK it was a rip roaring finish and Madrid needed only one more goal to get through. But in this last four tie Madrid has been truly dominant for only the first 15 and last 15 minutes of the match in the Bernab u. The best Madrid managed in Dortmund was to control possession for a 15 minute spell before halftime. So if this were boxing and each half was a round I d score it three rounds to one for Dortmund. Also over four games in the competition between the teams Madrid lost twice away and won one and played to a draw at home. Dortmund showed it was the better team head to head.

What you can say is that Madrid gave it a real go today. After failing to convert those early chances it looked like the game was petering out but Madrid kept pushing and eventually got a couple of goals to make it interesting.

Dortmund could easily have scored a handful. Lewandowski seemed determined to spurn every chance that came his way almost as though he was taking pity on Madrid for having put them to the sword so ruthlessly last week. But then this was one of those games where tactics go out the window in the final frantic minutes. Madrid had Ramos playing center forward in a formation that was something like 3 2 5. Dortmund countered that with an unorthodox 6 3 1 lineup. The dream of a 10th European crown for Madrid ends. For Dortmund a trip to Wembley for the final on May 25 awaits.

Can Bayern Munich make it an all German final by finishing the job against Barcelona tomorrow

But the Germans go through on aggregate 4 3 as Webb waves off one final dive in the box by Ronaldo.

By the closest of margins they are through to the final at Wembley on May 25. They pour onto the field hugging everwhere you look.

For Madrid the day was maddening. Then frustrating. Then thrilling.

And now nothing.

Hammered home from 8 yards.

That s 4 3 on aggregate now.

Andrew Das

Weidenfeller tips his shot from the circle over.

Andrew Das

Thank goodness. I can put the salt and pepper away and the keyboard will live to fight another day. Madrid gets behind Dortmund s defense really for the first time this half with Benzema clipping a low cross into the roof of the net for 1 0. Too late for Madrid though. Though I won t stake my keyboard on anything yet.

Mark Walsh

Can I have a little shout here for the best player over the two legs How about Dortmund s Ilkay Gundogan Superb touch great composure holds his position in central midfield passes neatly and gets forward to support the forwards (he would have scored in both legs but for miracle saves by Diego L pez). He s 22 so by today s market standards he should be available for a mere 897 gazillion bucks.

Mark Walsh

Klopp tries to slow things down by taking off Lewandowski and sending on Sebastien Kehl.

Madrid promptly win a corner.

Andrew Das

Kaka threaded a pass that led Ozil deep on the right and he fired it in front for Benzema to redirect in. Simple as pie.

Weidenfeller gets a yellow and a thumping by two Madrid players for falling on the ball after it bounces out of the net and refusing to surrender it.

The crowd senses something now but they ve left it all a bit late.

Andrew Das

Well that s one.

Andrew Das

That s Madrid s fourth and the sixth of the match over all.

Andrew Das

Chances for Ronaldo chance for Gundogan Chance for Kak another chance for Lewandowski. It s not like this game has lacked excitement. But this now stinks of 0 0. Real look resigned Dortmund look doughty.

Mark Walsh

He poleaxes Reus out on the right. He ll miss the final not that that matters.

Tempers flaring a little as Mourinho is berating the fourth official about time or that foul or something.

Andrew Das

This is Dortmund s fourth game against Real Madrid this season. They won two of them and they ve yet to trail for a single minute in any of them.

Andrew Das

Ronaldo high Kaka wide left Khedira high. Tell me if you re sensing a pattern here.

Andrew Das

Sent in again by Ozil he toepokes the ball over the bar from 15 yards. Then waves around for a deflection a corner a better pass something anything Look inside your soul instead Cristiano. That one was your fault. He has been dangerously forgettable all day.

Andrew Das

Two great opportunities for Dortmund at the start of the second half highlight something you don t need to be a quantum physicist to realize As Madrid starts to get desperate the German team will get opportunities to score. Reus is starting to get more involved knitting things together and trying to release Lewandowski through on goal. But where Lewandowski couldn t miss last week this time round he can t seem to hit a barn door with a banjo. He could have had at least three more in this match if he had been in the same form.

Mourinho has had a last roll of the dice bringing on Kak and Karim Benzema but a comeback at this stage would be something to rival Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich in the 1999 final.

Mark Walsh

Mourinho Brazilians Portuguese Argentines and Spaniards clearly aren t the answer so let s try another German. Theirs seem to get this stuff.

Andrew Das

And Dortmund has caught it from Madrid.

Andrew Das

Reus takes a give and go with Lewandowski into the right side of the area drawing a defender and Lopez then slots across. But with the goal gaping Gundogan manages to hit the only obstacle a scrambling Lopez lunging back into position

Andrew Das

Kaka for Coentrao means three at the back for Madrid. So how does Benzema get into the box cross a lovely ball in front and find no one waiting at the far post.

Andrew Das

Kaka for Coentrao Benzema for Higuain who was wasteful and intemperate. Go sit in a corner.

Andrew Das

Kaka is one of them. But they keep rushing the ball into play so fast that Webb can t stop the game.

Andrew Das

It was nice of Mario G tze to bow out early on just so we could see how next season s Dortmund will do.

Andrew Das

Cut back quickly to Lewandowski at the spot he skies it into the second deck. That would have sent some people home.

Andrew Das

Dani Pozo/Agence France Presse Getty Images Dortmund s Neven Subotic front took on Gonzalo Higuain of Real Madrid.

The key to Madrid s dominance in the opening quarter of an hour was the ability of zil and Di Mar a to probe the three quarter zone just in front of the Dortmund defense. That left Hummels and Subotic with the dilemma of whether to push up and stem the attacks or drop back and concede territory. Initially they dropped back playing into Madrid s hands and inviting the home team to pour forward. Chances followed and Dortmund must have hidden a lucky rabbit s foot somewhere not to have conceded a goal.

As the half progressed Dortmund s defensive line moved higher. Higua n zil and Ronaldo have been caught offside several times and so far the change in tactics is working. There s always the chance that Madrid will spring that offside trap at some point but Dortmund does have goals in hand and has now reached halftime which is a big hurdle. Mats Hummels whose mistake in the first leg presented a goal to Madrid has redeemed himself with a giant performance in the rearguard while Sven Bender just in front of the back four has been here there and everywhere putting out fires just in front of the defense.

The Polish striker Lewandowski is having a far less comfortable game with Ramos sticking his elbow in his face at every opportunity while Reus has been largely anonymous and G tze has limped off. But at this stage the result from the first game looks more than enough to send the Schwarzgelben through. If that s the case you can just hear Mourinho s post match news conference If only we d scored one of those chances in the opening period We left ourselves too much to do from the first leg But at least we gave it our best shot today

Mark Walsh

Madrid now going right to left in your mind s eye.

They immediately win a corner and wave their arms to urge the crowd on again.

Andrew Das

If he s smart Mourinho would have had his players get back on the bus walk off again and start the second half just like they started the first. Only with you know a few goals this time around. We said it before the game and say it again now a quick goal by Madrid could really shake this loose give them a little confidence and get into Dortmund s heads.

But every miss now just gives the Germans more confidence makes them think they re bulletproof that a berth in the final is inevitable.

Andrew Das

The first half was all Madrid. Except that they needed it to be partially Madrid but 1 0 or 2 0 by now. Which it should have been.

Has Dortmund stared down the worst of it Maybe. It s 0 0 but they re winning right now.

Andrew Das

For an open field tackle on Ronaldo that blunted a counterattack.

Webb may be trying to flex his muscles here. Pun intended.

Two minutes of added time.

Andrew Das

Gundogan s was for a foul in the center circle. The crowd appeals for a summary execution of him and another random Dortmund player. You know to teach them a lesson.

Higuain got one a moment ago for complaining. That one was an injustice according to the same crowd.

Andrew Das

They ve survived the first half hour and are now pushing back a bit. If they lose this tie Real Madrid will wonder for years how this night had gone had they banged in one or two of those early chances. They had the Germans by the neck and were squeezing but they ve let them up now. Getting them back down will be difficult.

Klopp can probably take off his safety glasses now. His team might be out of the danger zone.

Andrew Das ( AndrewDasNYT) 30 Apr 13

Javier Soriano/Agence France Presse Getty Images Dortmund s Sven Bender left and Mats Hummels collided after jumping for the ball on Tuesday.

A stunning start. Madrid has done everything but score Ronaldo Higua n and zil have all had gilt edged opportunities to get the Merengues on the road to recovery. Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller saved the first two with zil dragging the third wide. But for the lack of a goal this was exactly what Madrid needed to do impose itself psychologically and tactically on the match. Or show Dortmund who s boss if you prefer.

Madrid is playing much higher up the pitch tonight not making the mistake of inviting Dortmund s attacking sprites to exploit the spaces between midfield and defense. Lewandowski has had a half chance but generally Ramos is much tighter to him than Pepe was last week. The tweak of bringing Di Mar a into the side has improved Madrid enormously. He offers much more penetration and is giving the Dortmund defense another dribbling threat to worry about apart from Ronaldo.

Dortmund has suffered the loss through injury of G tze which is a shame. As Madrid commit players forward spaces will open up behind and G tze would have been the chief user of those opportunities.

Only one problem for Madrid. For all the derring do it s still 0 0 on the night and the Merengues still need goals. Plenty of em.

If this ends 0 0 I ll eat my keyboard.

Mark Walsh

They re closing down players on defense especially Lewandowski far far better than they did in the first leg. It s just at this scoring thing at the other end is a big part of Mourinho s plan to pull this off and they re butchering that half of it so far.

Andrew Das

Maybe Real Madrid should sign Lewandowski. He would ve had four again by now with all these chances.

Ronaldo and Ozil the latest to miss.

Ronaldo lunging volley hits Weidenfeller in the chest and bounces out and then caught napping Dortmund lets Ozil in alone on the right but he pulls his left footer wide.

Ronaldo of course insists he was open on the left. But why pass to the guy who keeps missing when you can miss yourself

Real Madrid really needs to get a reward for all this pressure because you can t expect them to keep it up forever otherwise. They need a carrot on the end of that stick and an opening goal would drive them forward nicely.

Andrew Das

Wow. Didn t see that coming.

Andrew Das

This one rolls to Ronaldo on a ball dribbled into the area but he can t turn his hips around it and skies it over. That s two early chances wasted by Madrid. They re not really in a position to do that.

Andrew Das

Just seen an interesting tweet suggesting that the price of the Borussia Dortmund starting team in the first match was about $43 million. That s compared to the about $49 million Bayern Munich will pay for Mario G tze or the about $51 million Real Madrid paid for Luka Modric.

Mark Walsh

Dani Pozo/Agence France Presse Getty Images Real Madrid s Cristiano Ronaldo vied with Dortmund s Jakub Blaszczykowski on Tuesday.

Weidenfeller quick off his line to turn away Higuain but a dangerous early chance. He slipped the offside trap on a pass from Ozil but got the ball caught up in his feet just long enough for the goalkeeper to close him down.

Di Maria fires wildly high.

Andrew Das

Right on time. Dortmund kicks off and immediately gives the ball away. So that s it then. It s over .

Andrew Das

Remember folks Dortmund have yet to lose away from home this season.a comprehensive Madrid victory seems unlikely to me.

Stefan Bienkowski ( SBienkowski) 30 Apr 13

But real Madrid is unbeaten at home too so how to reconcile that Ask me in 90 minutes.

Andrew Das

Let me play devil s advocate here for a minute and see if I can make a case for Real Madrid digging itself out of the 4 1 hole it finds itself in after the first match in Dortmund.

It s been done before in European competition. It s even been done before by Madrid and if that wasn t enough heck it s also been done before by Real Madrid against German opposition. In the 1985/86 season Borussia M nchengladbach thrashed the Spanish side 5 1 at home in the UEFA Cup (the forerunner of today s Europa League the Continent s less prestigious cup). Game over Not at all Madrid roared back to win 4 0 at the Bernabeu. Still need convincing How about a bit of eerie coincidence Gladbach s manager at the time was Jupp Heynckes who would go on to coach Madrid to success in the 1998 Champions League final and is now coach of Bayern Munich which holds a 4 0 first leg lead over Barcelona in the other semifinal .

But that s all dry history. What do Madrid need to do to get back into this semifinal this year today Well tighten up that meek back line for a start. In central defense Pepe was hopeless in the first match and it s not surprising he misses out. Sergio Ramos moves into the middle of the rearguard to partner Rapha l Varane with Michael Essien an interesting choice at right back. Essien is normally a lung bursting midfielder so he may be in there to put more pressure on Dortmund s flanks particularly on Marco Reus and also perhaps to make it easier for Jose Mourinho to switch to a three man defense if he needs to up the attacking ante.

In midfield Madrid must retain possession much better than in the first leg. Xabi Alonso must rediscover his metronomic passing rhythm while the clever ball players Luka Modric and Mesut zil have to perform better. Mourinho has to attack so he has left out the holding midfielder Sami Khedira and selected Angel Di Mar a a quicksilver winger who can deliver killer passes and crosses and who also carries a goal threat.

Oh and a couple of other minor ( ) things. A goal or two before halftime would be a big fillip for the Merengues that would give Dortmund the willies and get the crowd in full song for a swashbuckling second half. And don t let Dortmund score. If Robert Lewandowski and co. hit the back of the net then that might be hammer in the last nail in the all white coffin. Easy peasy then.

Gulp. Do you buy it Good because I m not sure I do

Mark Walsh

Curious to see if Dortmund feels him out by kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest early.

It s either over or it s not. Which side are you on

The realists say Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich settled the Champions League semifinals last week thumping Real Madrid and Barcelona on consecutive days. The optimists come from a few different camps Bar a and Real supporters fingering their rosary beads unrepentant contrarians soccer junkies looking for a fix but they are united in one opinion they would like the realists to just hold on a darn second please.

I put myself firmly in the second camp on Sunday when I less than seriously gamed out hypotheticals in which both Real Madrid and Barcelona wiped out their deficits to set up a Cl sico to end all Cl sicos. Were those scenarios likely Of course not. But don t go saying that on the streets of Madrid.

In Spain s capital Sid Lowe writes in The Guardian they call it a remontada a comeback and it holds a special place in the city s hearts

The words of the forward Juanito in April 1986 are now the stuff of legend. Madrid had been beaten 3 1 by Internazionale in the first leg of a UEFA Cup tie and afterwards Juanito warned Madrid s opponents in cod Italian Noventi minuti en el Bernab u son molto longo. Ninety minutes in the Bernab u are a very long time. Whenever Madrid are up against it they invoke the spirit of a player whose words are given added symbolism because he died in a car crash in 1992.

Madrid won the second leg 4 1. There have been other examples too Madrid beat Anderlecht 6 1 after a 3 0 first leg defeat in 1984 and in 1985 they beat both Inter 3 0 having lost the first leg 2 0 and Borussia M nchengladbach 4 0 after a 5 1 defeat. The tradition went all the way back to 1976 and a 5 1 win over Derby County having lost 4 1 in the first leg. Opponents came to the Bernab u and panicked.

So yes Dortmund has scored eight goals and surrendered only four in three games against Madrid in this year s Champions League. But to quote an Italian who knew a little about winning it ain t over til it s over. So why not root for a remontada at least for a half and see if things get interesting Why not savor the 90 minutes or maybe more as pure theater or just as your last Gus Johnson free game of the tournament (he ll call Wednesday s Bayern Barcelona game as well as presumably the final in London on May 25)

Or why not tune in this week simply to take a mental picture That s what the Goal blog s Stefan Bienkowski suggests pointing out that however this week s games end up they signal the end of a (brief) glorious era for both Dortmund and Bayern

One of the most compelling features of European soccer is the quick paced nature of its constant reinvention. This week two German contenders stand on the cusp of overthrowing an established Spanish monopoly. Yet even with success on the horizon these two clubs already bear the signs of inevitable change.

At Dortmund the warning of change looms with an insulting degree of clarity. Last week we learned that Mario G tze would be switching shirts heading to Bayern Munich for a modest fee of just under $40 million (the rumored amount to buy out his release fee). This week it s Robert Lewandowski the Polish striker who had four goals against Real Madrid in the first leg who stands as a new reminder to his club s loyal fans that change is afoot.

Like the Ajax side of the mid 1990s that captured the imagination of a continent with a young attacking team before ultimately losing all its key players after winning the European Cup in 1995 this Dortmund team looks helpless to the vultures of larger clubs with bigger budgets and more enticing prospects.

In Bavaria a similar story lurks in the shadow of Bayern Munich s success. Despite the euphoria of domestic and continental domination Jupp Heynckes s season of triumph has been undermined since the winter break with the imminent arrival of Pep Guardiola. The Spanish fly in this otherwise perfect ointment has brought out a darker side of Bayern Munich from composed and dedicated winners to a club always ready to throw suspected champions out the back door for the next best thing.

With plans for next season s acquisitions already taking shape the very fabric that makes this Bayern squad so great is already at risk. Where Arjen Robben may glide down the right wing or Thomas M ller battles through the final third to such success now a new manager and a short list of replacements in place. For Heynckes and his squad this May is the end of the road win or lose. Regardless of whether they win their first European Cup in 12 years. Regardless of whether they cement themselves as the definitive force in Europe. Any success promises a bitter aftertaste.

The phrase out with the old and in with the new is most fitting in the modern game of soccer but it underlines the need to stop and appreciate a team we enjoy before the nature of the sport has its way with it.

Perhaps in that sense we should just take a step back this spring and appreciate these two fantastic sides for what they are. Before they re gone for good.

Collins Comes Out

This story appears in the May 6 2013 issue of Sports Illustrated.

I'm a 34 year old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.

I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying I'm different. If I had my way someone else would have already done this. Nobody has which is why I'm raising my hand.

My journey of self discovery and self acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons.

PHOTO GALLERY Jason Collins through the years

I've played for six pro teams and have appeared in two NBA Finals. Ever heard of a parlor game called Three Degrees of Jason Collins If you're in the league and I haven't been your teammate I surely have been one of your teammates' teammates. Or one of your teammates' teammates' teammates.

Now I'm a free agent literally and figuratively. I've reached that enviable state in life in which I can do pretty much what I want. And what I want is to continue to play basketball. I still love the game and I still have something to offer. My coaches and teammates recognize that. At the same time I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful.

Why am I coming out now Well I started thinking about this in 2011 during the NBA player lockout. I'm a creature of routine. When the regular season ends I immediately dedicate myself to getting game ready for the opener of the next campaign in the fall. But the lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want. With the season delayed I trained and worked out. But I lacked the distraction that basketball had always provided.

The first relative I came out to was my aunt Teri a superior court judge in San Francisco. Her reaction surprised me. I've known you were gay for years she said. From that moment on I was comfortable in my own skin. In her presence I ignored my censor button for the first time. She gave me support. The relief I felt was a sweet release. Imagine you're in the oven baking. Some of us know and accept our sexuality right away and some need more time to cook. I should know I baked for 33 years.

When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red but I always knew it was blue.

I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say Me too.

The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant so why not live truthfully When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We'll be marching on June 8.

No one wants to live in fear. I've always been scared of saying the wrong thing. I don't sleep well. I never have. But each time I tell another person I feel stronger and sleep a little more soundly. It takes an enormous amount of energy to guard such a big secret. I've endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie. I was certain that my world would fall apart if anyone knew. And yet when I acknowledged my sexuality I felt whole for the first time. I still had the same sense of humor I still had the same mannerisms and my friends still had my back.

Believe it or not my family has had bigger shocks. Strange as it seems today my parents expected only one child in 1978. Me. When I came out (for the first time) the doctors congratulated my mother on her healthy seven pound one ounce baby boy. Wait said a nurse. Here comes another one The other one who arrived eight minutes later and three ounces heavier was Jarron. He's followed me ever since to Stanford and to the NBA and as the ever so slightly older brother I've looked out for him.

I had a happy childhood in the suburbs of L.A. My parents instilled in us an appreciation of history art and most important Motown. Jarron and I weren't allowed to listen to rap until we were 12. After our birthday I dashed to Target and bought DJ Quik's album Quik Is the Name. I memorized every line. It was around this time that I began noticing subtle differences between Jarron and me. Our twinness was no longer synchronized. I couldn't identify with his attraction to girls.

I feel blessed that I recognized my own attractions. Though I resisted my impulses through high school I knew that when I was ready I had someone to turn to my uncle Mark in New York. I knew we could talk without judgment and we did last summer. Uncle Mark is gay. He and his partner have been in a stable relationship forever. For a confused young boy I can think of no better role model of love and compassion.

I didn't come out to my brother until last summer. His reaction to my breakfast revelation was radically different from Aunt Teri's. He was downright astounded. He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy. But by dinner that night he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives he wanted to step in and protect me.

Queen of Versailles star Jackie Siegel may now be married to timeshare mogul David Siegel but recently admitted that she went on a few dates with Donald Trump.

'We just went out a couple times ' Mrs Siegel tells The Huffington Post. 'Like he invited us to Mar a Lago and go to his parties and things like that. He's a really great person. So much charisma.'

The 47 year old mother of eight from Windermere Florida is the star of The Queen Of Versailles an award winning documentary chronicling Mrs Siegel and her billionaire husband as they build their 90 000 square foot mansion modeled after France's 17th century Palace of Versailles.

'I'm so glad we're still friends ' Mrs Siegel says of Trump adding 'he in fact wrote me and my husband a note because we were in the New York Post last week and he said Congratulations on the construction of your home. '

Other than extreme wealth the duo appear to have a lot in common. The Siegels became the poster children for the excesses of the subprime real estate market and collapse of the American dream after director Lauren Greenfield followed them and their eight children 19 staff members and four dogs in their efforts to complete construction on the mega mansion.

Donald Trump made a fortune by building an American empire from New York to Las Vegas with glittering hotels and casinos yet companies that bear his name have filed for bankruptcy four times.

The Siegels' plans were derailed by the 2008 stock market crash. Mr Siegel's timeshare business took a hit and he was forced to sell a building in Las Vegas. The couple was also forced to halt construction on Versailles and the film which recently aired on Bravo showed Jackie filling up her shopping cart with Walmart instead of Gucci. Viewers saw trash and dog feces pile up in the mansion and a pet lizard died from neglect.

Billionaire David Siegel (left) and his wife Jackie (right) were the subject of a film that documented the construction of their mansion Versailles which at 90 000 square feet is larger than the White House

After the documentary's release Mr Siegel filed a lawsuit against the director over the film claiming that it hurt the reputation of his company yet his wife continues to promote it.

By the end of the movie construction on the dream home has ground to a halt but Mrs Siegel claims construction has resumed. For now the Siegels are residing in their 26 000 square foot home but she tells New York magazine that Versailles will contain a theater inspired by the Paris Opera House a bowling alley roller skating rink and 30 car garage.

At one point Mrs Siegel says the house was listed for $75 million unfinished and $100 million finished. She later claimed that it was not for sale but has stated that if someone made a $100 million offer the family would 'entertain' it.

The Queen of Versailles Says She Is Doing Fine Ruins Her Documentary

Jackie Siegel the subject of last year's brilliant and harrowing Queen of Versailles documentary appeared on last night's episode of Watch What Happens Live after Bravo premiered the doc. The film which chronicles Jackie and her husband David's abandoned attempt to build the largest single family house in the country as well as their timeshare company's financial ruin ran with a disclaimer tagged to its end that read

The Siegels have provided the following statement to Bravo Westgate Resorts is currently financially sound and very profitable. The loan on Versailles has been paid off and construction has resumed.

Siegel spent much of her WWHL time reiterating this and in the process refuting the documentary. Westgate she says just had its most profitable year in 33 years. She also claims that they're going to resume building that disgustingly massive house that she doesn't live amongst piles of dog feces (deliberate feces editing will get you every time) that she knew all along that she and her husband were financially solid. Part of what makes Jackie an ultimately likable figure in the film is that she is mostly down to earth and gracious when her family's financial bubble pops. Now it would seem that her head is back in the clouds and an abundance of cash is her rocket fuel.

The Siegels have expressed disdain for this film since before it was released when David sued both its director Lauren Greenfield and the Sundance Film Festival for defamation over promotional language stating that his empire had collapsed. When that was changed he took issue with it being labeled a rags to riches to rags story even though he says essentially the same thing in the film. ( This is the reverse of a rags to riches story. This is a kind of riches to rags story. ) The lawsuit raged on as one big shit show he eventually threw his son under the bus to claim that parts of the documentary's filming were unauthorized. A federal judge ruled in favor of Greenfield calling Siegel's position quite bizarre.

(You may remember David Siegel by the way as the CEO who built himself America's largest house that just threatened to fire his employees if Obama's elected. Great guy that Siegel.)

And yet despite all this litigation there was Jackie was last night on TV promoting this thing that she claims is inaccurate and yet is the cause of her pop cultural relevance. It's the kind of hypocrisy that makes sense in the world of reality TV which would be the next logical step for the Siegels. Toward the bottom of a Reuters article from last year that corroborates the claims of a Westgate upswing Jackie is quoted as saying I like the camera and doing projects. I don't know if it's my five minutes of fame or it's going to develop into a mini career.

Murder Mystery Amanda Knox Speaks

Amanda Knox convicted of murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher has nightmares and traumatic memories of her four years in Italian courts and prison. But she has only warm memories of Kercher and says she would like to visit her grave one day.

Knox talked about Kercher as well as her legal ordeal in an exclusive interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer. Her recall of those years has moments of regret anger and sadness. Also among her emotions are warm thoughts of Kercher and empathy for her family.

I want them to know Knox said getting emotional their grief has my every respect has the respect of my family and we just don't want to... we don't want to invade their life and their grief.

Watch Amanda Knox in an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer set to air Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET.

And I really want them to understand that my need for justice for myself is not in contradiction with theirs she said.

Knox recalled her short time a mere six weeks with Kercher who was also studying in Perugia.

She talked about how she wanted to be a journalist like her dad. And she talked about her sister. And if that's all I can give them is this memory that I have of her to add to... all of theirs that they can carry with them when she's gone.

FULL COVERAGE The Amanda Knox Case

Knox paused at that point and added I hope that eventually I can have their permission to pay respects at her grave.

The Kercher family has made it clear they believe Knox is involved but Knox's father Curt told Sawyer that he hopes the families can meet some day. I would like to see them when they clearly clearly understand that Amanda had nothing to do with the loss of their daughter.

The Kercher family has spoken only rarely in public about Meredith's death but today her sister issued a statement saying they do not intend to read Knox's new memoir Waiting to Be Heard.

Meredith is the victim and we are waiting to be heard her sister Stephanie Kercher said.

Knox is still battling to convince the Italian judicial system and the world of her innocence. After nearly six years Knox with her freedom back on the line after a recent Supreme Court ruling ordering a new trial is breaking her silence for the first time.

I want the truth to come out. I want misunderstandings to be looked at. I would like to be re considered as a person Knox said.

In Waiting to Be Heard Knox writes about her conviction life in prison acquittal and how she has changed.

I have been in an experience where I thought everything that I had hoped for in my life was taken away from me and I had to redefine what mattered. And when I think about the purpose of what I wrote I think about what I would tell my little sisters about how to live no matter what's stopping you she said.

Knox's journey to study abroad in Perugia Italy in 2007 was care free for only a six weeks before Kercher was murdered on Nov. 1.

Kercher had 47 wounds on her body the deepest being a fatal slash to her throat. There were signs that Kercher who was trained in karate fought hard for her life.

I was stunned by her death completely bowled over because it was unfair. She was my friend and I lost a friend Knox said to Sawyer.

Now nearly six years later Knox concedes she is not the same person she was before the ordeal began when she was 20. She thought her own personal hell was over when an Italian appeals court threw out her conviction and she came home to Seattle in 2011. But even before this latest ruling the toll taken on her has been obvious.

My family was expecting the old Amanda who was she makes goofy faces which was the old Amanda back. And I'm not quite as chirpy anymore.

The Following ratings up for finale

Fox s The Following rallied for its first season finale with ratings rising 8 percent among adults 18 49 to deliver the show s best performance in seven weeks.

All told The Following is averaging 17.1 million viewers this season when you count all forms of viewership on air DVR encores VOD and streaming. Here s a breakdown chart of how it all boils down (right). The blue part Live Same Day is what typically gets reported the morning after an episode airs. Then there s all this other viewership which is frequently not counted in the media (but also doesn t contribute as much to Fox s bottom line for the show since advertisers primarily want viewers who are watching their ads live). Still this is a nice reminder of all the ways viewership can stack up.

Meanwhile Bones was up 11 percent this season. NBC s The Voice fell 16 percent to tie this current spring cycle s low. Revolution was steady. CBS comedies were roughly on par with their last performance (you wonder if CBS gets worried when biggest performer on the night HIMYM is going away after next season). ABC s Dancing was down 5 percent to mark its lowest rated performance show ever with Castle down 13 percent as well. Full chart

Steve Nash makes Lakers case This is the place for Dwight Howard

With Dwight Howard.

Nash was very hopeful the soon to be free agent center would return to the Lakers.

I think this is the place for him Nash said Monday. He's in the prime of his career. He's got his best years ahead of him. He can play for one of the greatest franchises in sports and an amazing city. This has got to be the place for him and I'm hopeful that he sees it that way.

Howard 27 can sign a five year $118 million deal with the Lakers in July or a four year $88 million deal with another team.

Reserve guard Jodie Meeks who built a solid bond with Howard during their first season with the Lakers also seemed to think a reunion would be best.

I know he loves this city. I know he loves the team Meeks said. We got pretty close this year as friends from the same hometown Atlanta . I can't really say exactly what he's going to do but I know he likes the city.

Nash was the highlighted name on the first day of Lakers season ending interviews. He met with General Manager Mitch Kupchak and Coach Mike D'Antoni at the team training facility and then swore his resolve to reporters none of whom predicted such a flat season for him or the Lakers' playoff exit before May.

The bigger names Howard Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant will meet Tuesday with Kupchak and D'Antoni.

Reserve forward Antawn Jamison however skipped his Monday meeting after an up and down time with the Lakers that will end with his having wrist surgery Tuesday the team said. He will not return to the Lakers next season.

Nash 39 doesn't have as much freedom as Howard. Nor do the Lakers really. They will be together again despite Nash's injury riddled season in which he sat out 24 games because of a fractured leg and 10 more because of hip and hamstring injuries including the Lakers' last two playoff games.

Nash has two more seasons and $19 million remaining on his Lakers contract. His trade value has never been lower thanks to age injuries and stats he averaged 12.7 points and 6.7 assists in only 50 regular season games. He had four epidural shots in his back this month because of preexisting nerve issues that caused pain in his hip and weakness in his hamstring.

He called this season the most frustrating of his 17 year career. I'm definitely going to prepare better than I ever had to try to make this year a distant memory and next year a phenomenal experience he said.

Nash said it would probably take a month for his injuries to feel better.

I don't have any concern and I haven't gotten wind from anyone on the medical staff that there's any concern for long term issues or for next season to be in jeopardy he said.

Metta World gone

Metta World Peace wore a blue Cookie Monster T shirt for his end of season meeting with Kupchak and D'Antoni.

In unrelated news if the Lakers don't use their amnesty provision on Gasol in July World Peace is their next option.

He is due to make $7.7 million next season assuming World Peace exercises a player option in June a no brainer.

You never know. Anything can happen he said.

Lakers Jodie Meeks says Dwight Howard loves city team

Howard will be a free agent this summer. Does Meeks think Howard will re sign with the Lakers

I know he loves this city. I know he loves the team Meeks said. We got pretty close this year as friends from the same hometown Atlanta . I can't really say exactly what he's going to do but I know he likes the city.

Regardless of where Howard lands Meeks expects the center to be a stronger player than he was this past season when he was coming off April 2012 back surgery.

I think he'll come back stronger and more determined next year said Meeks.

Meeks has one year left on his contract with the Lakers at $1.55 million although the team has an option on his deal (to be decided before July).

I want to be here. I love the city my teammates and the coaching staff Meeks said.

In 78 regular season games Meeks averaged 7.9 points and shot 38.7% from the field 35.7% from three point range.

My shooting was kind of up and down this season he said. I know this system fits me perfectly. I know Coach Mike D'Antoni has a lot of confidence in me.

After getting through the season without a serious injury Meeks suffered a high ankle sprain in Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs causing him to miss the final three games of the first round playoff series in which the Lakers were swept.

It feels all right. It's still hard to get a shoe on Meeks said. He said he'll work to rehab it in the off season and should be long healed by training camp.

While his offense was spotty throughout the season Meeks was one of the team's better defenders in transition.

Coach said I came a long way defensively he said. I think I played pretty well. I watched a lot of film this year more than what I was used to.

Meeks still needs to grow as an individual defender but D'Antoni appreciated the energy he brought to the lineup.

No matter if I'm making shots or playing well offensively the one thing I can control is my energy Meeks said. That's what I try to bring each and every night and that makes up for a lot of bad stuff you might be doing on the court.

It was a tough season for the Lakers especially with the long list of injured players. Meeks said the team was resilient in its quest to make the playoffs which it did by winning 28 of the last 40 games.

We could have easily given up. I think we were eight games under .500. We could have packed it in but we didn't Meeks said. The last two weeks were definitely fun beating some good teams while we were a little bit short handed.

By the time the Lakers made the postseason they had only a skeleton crew against the Spurs.

The team is expected to bring back Meeks for another season.

Knicks remain confident heading into Game 5

BOSTON If you went into the Celtics locker room after their 97 90 win on Sunday you'd see and hear a confidence bunch.

If you went across the hallway to the Knicks locker room you'd see and hear an even more confident bunch. After all they are the ones up 3 1 in the series.

And even though they lost a somehow winnable Game 4 the fact that they split the series in Boston is a major plus and enables them to seal the deal Wednesday in front of the home crowd.

We have to be confident going back home said Carmelo Anthony who had 36 points Sunday. We were confident here Sunday . We felt like we gave ourselves a shot to win the basketball game. They had the momentum going today. We fought back. I take my hat off to my guys as a team for fighting back and putting us in a position to actually win the game and send it into overtime. But those guys played extremely well today and we look forward to bringing this game back home to Madison Square Garden Wednesday. Madison Square Garden will be rocking Wednesday and we'll be prepared for that.

The TD Garden in Boston was rocking on Sunday and with an unusually high number of Knicks fans in attendance all loud too.

If that's just a preview of the Knicks fandom that will be on display on Wendesday the Celtics will be going into quite a hostile environment. They undoubtedly know this already.

We're going back home Raymond Felton said. That's where we're comfortable at. That's back in our comfort zone back in our building. We did our job when we came here and we got us a win. We'd like to have got both of those games but we got one game. That was our goal.

In fact the Knicks weren't looking at Sunday's loss in much of a negative way at all.

The fact that we came back from a 20 point deficit in their building shows a lot about our team Felton said.

But while the Knicks seem to have all the confidence in the world still heading into Game 5 they better expect to see a Celtics team with everything to play for and a win finally under their belts.

We ve just gotta come out with the same mindset that we had Sunday Jeff Green said. The pressure s on them. They ve gotta win the one game. We ve gotta come out and continue to play well. We just gotta keep the pressure on them. Our defense was key. Like you saw tonight we get stops we get in transition we get open threes we get easy layups. So if we continue to do that it could turn into a wonderful series at the end.

Unclaimed Tim Tebow becomes a free agent USA Today

In this Monday April 15 2013 file photo New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow arrives on the first day of NFL football offseason workouts at the Jets practice facility in Florham Park N.J. The New York Jets waived Tebow.(Photo Mel Evans AP)

For the first time in his NFL career Tim Tebow is a free agent.

The former New York Jets and Denver Broncos quarterback/H back/punt protector/wide receiver cleared waivers Tuesday afternoon as expected. No team put in a claim for Tebow meaning he's now free to sign with anyone.

It won't be easy for him to find his next job especially if he's unwilling to switch positions from quarterback. But Tebow slimmed down this offseason and worked with a quarterbacks coach which indicates he doesn't believe Rex Ryan's passing over him for Greg McElroy when Mark Sanchez was benched last season is an indication his time as an NFL quarterback is done.

YOU'RE FIRED Geno Smith sacks agents

IDZIK ON TEBOW Something had to give

BELL Tebow might not like his options

TEBOW GETS AN OFFER And it's $75 a game

But his prospects aren't that hot. If they were a team would've claimed him Tuesday. No quarterback with a value to a roster passes through waivers especially at a bargain price of less than $3.5 million in base salary the next two seasons.

While I was here Jets general manager John Idzik said Tuesday he was slated as a quarterback.

Tebow's chances of finding the field in the NFL seem much better if he would switch to a full time role as a utility player. Even then though he probably wouldn't be viewed as a must have piece for many teams for a few reasons.

First there's the media circus he brings into the locker room something Sanchez indicated recently was a distraction for him and even for Tebow.

OVERRATED UNDERRATED Is Tebow both

Secondly Tebow struggled when he did play a utility role He ran for only 102 yards on 32 attempts last season.

And third Tebow struggled with his route running. A pass from Sanchez doinked off his helmet as he failed to locate the ball on a quick out route against the Miami Dolphins last season.

But Tebow has a track record as a winner and save for his understandable disappointment late last season when he was passed over is a team player who won't do anything to hurt his teammates. Maybe there's a team that would at least be intrigued about the possibility of adding him to the roster.

The San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots would make sense. Chargers head coach Mike McCoy was Tebow's offensive coordinator in Denver. And if anybody could curb the sideshow Tebow would bring it would be Bill Belichick who has welcomed plenty of attention grabbing players into his team first locker room in recent years.

That said Tebow is now at the point where he might have to prove what he can do athletically. That could mean working out for teams instead of just strolling into the facility taking a physical and signing a contract.

Or it could mean a stint in the Canadian Football League or Arena league.

But get the GPS ready. It should be an interesting spring and perhaps summer tracking Tebow's whereabouts as he makes the free agent rounds for the first time.

Real Madrid fall just short as Borussia Dortmund proceed to the final

Borussia Dortmund are on their way to Wembley. But only just. J rgen Klopp's side rode out an opening storm and a late late siege to reach the final on 25 May. Just when it appeared that their passage would ultimately be a comfortable one two goals in the final eight minutes first from Karim Benzema and then from Sergio Ramos left them hanging on. In the end a 2 0 defeat Dortmund's first in four matches against Madrid was not enough to deny them. When the final whistle went there were celebrations from Dortmund's players and applause from Real Madrid's fans.

For a long time it had not looked like ending that way. Gonzalo Higua n Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil all missed clear opportunities in a breathless start as Madrid looked to overcome the 4 1 deficit from the first leg. But the momentum was lost and the game appeared to be drifting to a premature and limp close until Benzema scored to set up a dramatic finish.

Jos Mourinhochose the same side that had started against Madrid in the first leg he recalled ngel di Mar a and sought greater creativity in the middle by partnering Xabi Alonso with Luka Modric instead of Sami Khedira.

Modric's inclusion implied a more considered approach and Mourinho had talked about going goal by goal and minute by minute . The fans of course wanted an early goal and the comeback legend speaks of the need to make the first corner first foul and first shot all Madrid's. Here they came racing out of the blocks the first corner came before the opening minute had closed. The ball dropped to Di Mar a whose wild shot flew over but the momentum was there within seven minutes Madrid had taken four corners.

Three minutes earlier they should have taken the lead. Modric and Ozil combined to put Higua n one on one with Roman Weidenfeller but his shot was blocked. Then there was a chest control and close range volley for each side in less than a minute the first fell to Robert Lewandowski the second at the other end to Ronaldo. Both should have done better both seemed unaware of how much time they had.

Soon Ozil had the game's best chance. Clean through on the right he dipped the shoulder as if to shot towards the far post. Weidenfeller certainly seemed to think so but with the space opened up at the near post Ozil pulled his shot wide. The game was not even a quarter of an hour old and Madrid had already created sufficient opportunities to believe that a comeback was possible. Ninety minutes would indeed be a long time for the visitors it seemed.

Dortmund though had ridden out the storm. Slowly they settled and took control of the ball drawing the sting from the game getting to grips with Ozil. It would take another ten minutes for Madrid to take a shot but Di Mar a's effort wasblocked on the edge of the area and the Germans were starting to open up the home defence breaking with purpose. All the while the clock ticked down. Ronaldo's free kick was the last opportunity Madrid would get in the first half and it sailed high into the stands. If the plan had been a goal every half an hour then they now needed three at least in 45 minutes.

Dortmund could have ended it at the start of the second half but Lewandowski wasted two chances in as many minutes. First he fired over from just to the left of the penalty spot after Kevin Grosskreutz expertly turned the ball into his path then Marko Reus rolled a pass into him on the other side of the area. Faced with Diego L pez he put his head down and hit the ball as hard as he could. It screeched past the keeper and thumped off the underside of the bar. Four in the first leg should have been three more in the second.

It was a let off for Madrid but still the chances were not falling at the other end where Ronaldo was struggling to escape Lukasz Piszczek and Higua n had disappeared. There was little fluidity or imagination and their passing was erratic. Mourinho sought to remedy that just before the hour when he withdrew Higua n and Fabio Coentrao for Ricardo Kak and Benzema.

Yet the best chance would again fall Dortmund's way and this time it was a sitter. Reus pulled the ball back for Ilkay Gundogan just five yards out but L pez scrambled across his line to make an astonishing save. A moment after that Lewandowski sneaked in but headed wide. Madrid needed three goals but Dortmund calm whenever the won the ball back smooth in playing their way out and into the space that opened before them always looked the more likely to get one.

There was something flat about Madrid now even when they did attack. Ronaldo toe poked one shot over the bar and headed wide before Di Mar a shot wide but the conviction seemed to have drained out of them. At the other end Lewandowski again received close to goal. This time his shot was blocked. Another chance gone but the damage had already been done in Dortmund six days before.

Or so it seemed. And then the incredible happened. With eight minutes to go Ozil finally escaped down the right. He pulled the ball back into the six yard box where Benzema was waiting to side foot home. Suddenly there was a roar belief. A Raphael Varane effort was blocked. When the ball dropped to Benzema near the by line moments later he coolly pulled it back for Ramos who controlled and smashed into the roof of the net. When they won their next corner the goalkeeper went up. Instead it was Ramos who reached the delivery his header drifting wide. Amazingly when Dortmund got the ball back they too threw men forward. Hearts were in mouths until at last Howard Webb put the whistle to his.

OMAHA Neb. (AP) The Omaha Beef have a job waiting for Tim Tebow if he wants it and the Nebraska indoor football team will even pay him $75 a game.

A day after Tebow was cut by the New York Jets the Beef called the office of Tebow agent Jimmy Sexton to offer a standard player contract. Beef assistant general manager Andrew Mather said Tuesday that he doesn't expect to hear back but he thought it was worth asking.

OH CANADA CFL might not be so easy

The Beef's current quarterback James McNear has led the team to a 5 1 start. He's completing 70 percent of his passes and has thrown for 21 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

McNear is anything but insulted by the Beef's wooing of Tebow. McNear said I think Tim can learn a lot from me.

TVLINE Can you definitively say that Joe is dead I ve been getting text messages all morning from friends and family and some people are saying I loved it Best episode yet. I can t believe you killed Joe And others are like You expect me to think you killed Joe Laughs Some people believe he s gone and some people think that we ll figure out a way to bring him back but all I can say is that creator/showrunner Kevin Williamson knew where he wanted this thing to go. We shot a couple of different versions to protect ourselves in terms of how we were going to present it to the audience and then after we showed it to Warner Bros. and Fox and talked about it we put together the version that made the most sense. But how it plays out is part of the fun of doing a cliffhanger.

TVLINE Was it always the plan to kill him by the end of the season Wow you re trying to trap me Laughs

TVLINE No I just know that things can change or develop organically as you move through the season. The same thing goes for the various characters you killed off along the way. Laughs With the actors who didn t know I sat down with every single actor early on and I mean top to bottom and told them that we know where the season is going and that I wasn t going to tell them if or when they re going to die but they needed to know that in this story no one is safe. Everyone understands that a show like this has those kinds of stakes. But I do struggle with some of the things we ve laid out. I knew from the day we cast Annie Parisse as Parker that she was going to meet some big demise and that s what changes it evolves in terms of how and when it s going to happen. But then I fell in love with Annie as a person and with Parker as a character and I wondered why we had to kill her . But you realize that it all serves the greater purpose. Parker s death services Ryan s Hardy s character and it s part of the building blocks of who he is and who he s going to become in Season 2 So the short answer is yes we knew and know where we re going but I can t really tell you specifics because that s the fun of it.

TVLINE So back to Joe s death specifically All I ll say is the way that it ended is always the way that I knew it would end.

TVLINE Do you think this is a show that could move forward without Joe Could this ever be a series with various Big Bads or new branches of the cult I give you mad props Meg for the creative way you re asking me to tell you if Joe is dead or alive. Laughs I have full confidence in Kevin Williamson s ability if he chose to write a character that is as compelling as Joe Carroll We got people to root for Joe right We got you to fall in love with Joe Carroll the serial killer. So I do think we could do it again if we needed to But I don t think it s that black and white for us. There s a big picture here. Kevin s been very vocal about this being a passion project for him he s gone through a lot of stages and evolution about how he s going to tell the story But I do know that when he first sat down he knew how three seasons could play out and he could build beyond that. He had a solid foundation when he started.

RELATED Season Finale Scoopapalooza More Than 100 Spoilers on Your Fave Series Endgames

TVLINE You mentioned at a recent event that you shot some extra footage that you ll be able to use in Season 2. Is that just flashback type stuff Or will is actually service the story There are some things we shot as alternates Because it was the finale and we wouldn t have the opportunity to go back and reshoot we protected ourselves. And there are some things we shot that we know are absolutely essential to next season in A) answering questions B) satisfying the audience and C) propelling the story. We have a little bit of everything in what we shot and it was all very deliberate.

TVLINE Given the way the finale ended do you guys already have a place in mind for where Season 2 will pick up There s a plan and framework in place yes. Once the writers room starts up that s when things start to evolve and new ideas come out. But we re not going in with a white board with no ideas on it.

TVLINE Looking back at Season 1 is there anything you re particularly proud of And on the flip side is there anything you maybe would have done differently I haven t had that conversation with Kevin so I can t speak for him. But I personally was surprised at how the Jacob/Paul story evolved early on and it became my favorite storyline. I found myself really invested in these two guys and wanting to see more. I knew where we were going with it and how much of that story we were going to tell but I kept thinking that maybe we would alter it a little bit since people were responding to it. Those are the sort of things that surprise me. I wouldn t have predicted that early on But at the end of the day because Kevin has such a strong framework it would have pulled too many strings and unraveled too many things if he d deviated from that Also at the beginning of the season I would sometimes bring up how we could give Ryan Hardy a bit more depth. In Episode 6 when he s held hostage at the farmhouse we really got to see a sassier side of him when he was bantering with the captors and I really loved that. I kept pushing for more of that Hardy too and I think we will see more of that.

TVLINE Tight lipped as you are I know you have a good Season 2 tease somewhere in you. We put it all out there in terms of what we d want the audience to be guessing Who really died How do you resolve it How do you move forward if people die What I can say about Season 2 is that it s a very different season but at the same time it will feel like a continuation of the story. There s no way to tell the same story again we can t have the exact same moments of jeopardy because then people will get bored and it s predictable. The brilliance behind the series that Kevin has built is that he s seen how these steps need to evolve. The thing that s going to surprise people most I hope is that the fans will become as invested in that story as they were in this one and even more so because now they know these characters and we ll have to spend less time explaining backstory.

Marcus Lattimore and Frank Gore Joined at the knee USA Today

SANTA CLARA Calif. Shortly after Marcus Lattimore suffered the devastating right knee injury last year that clouded his future one of the first of several NFL players to call with encouragement was San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore.

Now Lattimore undoubtedly will develop an even closer bond with Gore.

The 49ers drafted the rehabbing former South Carolina running back with a fourth round compensatory pick on Saturday (131st overall) providing him the opportunity to continue on his road to recovery as an understudy to Gore a man who can surely relate to his challenge.

SAY WHAT Giants hope draftee 'never plays'

FINALLY Eagles grab plummeting QB

Gore overcame two major knee injuries during his college career at Miami (Fla.) but has evolved into one of the NFL's best running backs.

I know I'm going to get to know him a little better once I get there Lattimore speaking from Columbia S.C. told news reporters during a conference call Saturday. So I'm real excited about that.

Lattimore seemed destined to become the top rated running back in the draft until suffering a gruesome injury against Tennessee when his knee was dislocated and three ligaments were torn. A year after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee he had reconstructive surgery Nov. 2 performed by renowned surgeon James Andrews to repair the anterior cruciate lateral collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

Right after it happened I doubted myself and I lost hope said Lattimore who scored a school record 41 touchdowns. But one of my good friends came over I got a chance to talk to Frank Gore I got a chance to talk to Willis McGahee and I realized God doesn't make mistakes. He did everything for a reason and he put me in this situation. Now I'm with the 49ers. It's just a great great situation for me.

Lattimore 5 11 1/2 232 pounds is one of the most inspirational stories of the draft given the magnitude of his comeback. After his pro day workout in March he was given a standing ovation by scouts and coaches in attendance.

LATTIMORE I'll be ready by opening day

His rehab is a work in progress and it's expected that he will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list. He reports that he has progressed to the point where he has been running sprints straight ahead for two weeks and is able to perform box jumps. He hasn't begun agility work but hasn't had any setbacks.

Getting drafted by the 49ers

It's still surreal to me he said. This is a great opportunity with a great organization and I can't wait to get there. I've always been a fan of those guys just their style of play and how they do everything.

The 49ers are in no rush. The priority coach Jim Harbaugh said is getting a player who is 100 percent whenever that comes.

If he doesn't play this year he doesn't play this year Harbaigh said. But I think if there's anyone who can overcome what he's been through it's him.

Harbaugh said that he admires the aggressive mental approach that Lattimore had carried throughout his rehab but added We're going to slow things down for him physically.

DRAFT Team by team recap

Asked whether he would prefer that Lattimore took an essential redshirt year to recover the coach responded It's not what I want. It's what's prudent.

The talent rich defending NFC champions who entered draft with an NFL high 13 picks could afford to take a gamble and wait on Lattimore's recovery. And he's not the only one they will be patient with. In the second round San Francisco drafted Florida State defensive end Tank Carradine coming off a torn ACL.

Lattimore says that in his case the support and inspiration from Gore has provided a boost. Gore was connected with Lattimore by 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver who played with the running back at South Carolina.

Lattimore said he has talked to Gore only a few times but that they also have communicated through text messages.

He was just asking me how I'm handling all of this because he's been through the same thing with the injuries and all Lattimore said. He's just told me to keep that positive mind set and that's what I've been doing these past five six months. And I feel like that's why I'm doing so great with my rehab.

QA with Jason Collins

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images NBA center Jason Collins came out on April 29 2013 becoming the first openly gay male athlete who is still active in a major American team sport.

On the day after Jason Collins made history by becoming the first active athlete in any of America s four major sports leagues to acknowledge that he s gay (see my column here) he hopped on the phone from Los Angeles to talk briefly with me about the reaction to his announcement and the road he traveled to this juncture.

Where are you right now

I m driving from my house on my way to go work out. I m one of those people who likes a routine and my routine in the summertime is working out. So yesterday obviously being the day that it was I missed a workout.

What about the reaction to your coming out has most surprised or impressed you

I expected some support for my teammates from my coaches but to get all the support from every single person I talked to . . . from the NBA family the Stanford family . . . It s been overwhelming and then beyond that it doesn t get any bigger than the leader of the free world giving you a call and saying you did a good thing congratulations that I did something not only to help myself but to empower others to help others. It s just remarkable and overwhelming.Did you have much of a heads up or expectation that President Obama would call Where were you when the call came in

That was out of the blue. I spoke with President Clinton yesterday but I ve had a relationship with the Clinton family. Chelsea and my brother s wife were bridesmaids in each other s weddings. They (the Clintons) came to my graduation party at Stanford. I ve known the Clinton family and President Clinton said he would reach out to the Obama administration. And I spoke with Valerie Jarrett yesterday and I assumed that that was it .

(Then at his agent s house) we get a call. A woman identified herself and said Can you hold for the president Sure A part of me in the back of my mind thought this was going to be the biggest practical joke ever. But then the president gets on the line and his voice is so distinctive the way he talks. It was amazing.

While most reaction has seemingly been positive some wasn t. Were you aware that Chris Broussard of ESPN said you weren t a Christian if you re openly and actively gay and what s your response

My response is first I am a Christian. I know other gay and lesbian members of the community the LGBT community who are practicing Christians. This is all about tolerance and acceptance and America is the best country in the world because we re all entitled to our opinions and beliefs but we don t have to agree. Add obviously I don t agree with his statement. This is where the discussion begins.

People are my advocate and they re saying you know he s a great teammate and it shouldn t and it doesn t matter. It shouldn t matter and it doesn t matter what his sexual orientation is but it s just about the person it s about the teammate it s about this guy is all about the team and making the team better and helping us win basketball games and that s where the conversation should go.

You said on Good Morning America that you don t know of any other gay pro basketball players. Could there really not be any others or is that an illustration of how tightly shut the closet door is in sports

Statistically speaking I am probably not the only one. Statistically speaking. But since no one else has raised their hand you don t know for sure. But statistically speaking I would say I m 99.9 percent sure there are others.

So why are none of them out Why does sports seem to lag behind so many other arenas of society in terms of having openly gay people in it

You know that you re going to put yourself out there. Coming out is a difficult decision period regardless of what your profession is. I describe it as baking in the oven you just need more time to develop to be comfortable in your own skin to be comfortable in your own private life. . . . Anytime you re a professional athlete you re already in the spotlight. And some guys like me might have felt you don t want to be a distraction.

At the end of the day it s all about winning basketball games and your professional conduct and your work ethic. Making your private life public it s funny I ve been playing a game on my iPad called Domino with one of my teammates. You send it you go back and forth sometimes it takes a week to finish the game. Yesterday I make this big statement and I go back to Domino on my iPad and it s my turn in the game. And then I play and I send it and it s his turn. So I made this big declaration but our relationship nothing s changed. I hope someday that s what this turns into being gay.

You said in your Sports Illustrated article that over the years you didn t tell anyone in basketball that you were gay. But were you able to have a gay romantic life outside of basketball A circle of friends that included gay men That question speaks to my private life and I m not going to answer. I know the question you re asking. For me I don t want to talk about specifics in my private life. I ve had friendships. I definitely have friends who are gay.

Are you ready for all the scrutiny that comes with the precedent you ve set With the role you ve taken on I hope so. (Laughs.) It s kind of heard to reverse course right now. I m just going to be myself. I think that s what s most important that I live my honest genuine life. You make a decision to try to make yourself happy in life. You re not going to be able to please everyone.

You said in the article that you d endured years of misery. What did you mean by that

It s tough to live a lie. It s really tough I describe it as you know the sky is blue but you tell yourself it s red. It s an insane logic. It s tough to continue to live with lies and half truths. It weighs on you. You put on a mask but at the end of the day you re not happy telling yourself a lie over and over again to the point where I am now being honest and truthful and not having to have a censor button it s liberating.

Some smart commentary after your announcement noted how helpful it could be that the first openly gay major league athlete is also black because young gay black men can t look around and see as many prominent openly gay black men as openly gay white men. Did you notice and were you struck over the years by that lack of examples

I was fortunate. Like most people you look to your family first and I had an uncle who was gay. My uncle Mark who lives in New York. So I had a great role model who I knew I would eventually be able to talk to. And he s been in a long term relationship with his partner. They recently got engaged. Since I ve been in high school they ve been together. So I had that role model in my uncle already. I ve been very blessed. I didn t have to look far.

You re a free agent. Let s say you don t get picked up for the next season. Will you ever know for sure whether coming out was a factor

I m sure that teams will look at my basketball look at what I have to offer. My role in the NBA is as a backup center and I know that I ll be ready at any moment. Seeing the Tweets yesterday from my teammates the Wizards going all the way back to my teammates from the Nets to Jason Kidd they talk about what a great teammate I am. Is it possible this disclosure this new honesty and the freedom it brings will make you a better player

I think so. They ll look at me and think this guy s speaking honestly . . . My teammates look at me sort of like Yoda a little bit. The old veteran. The old guy who can still get it done. I impart my knowledge. I ve earned that right as a 12 year NBA veteran.

Several readers wrote to me this morning not just to express admiration for you but to point out that you re able to do this because of many men and women who came out when it was much riskier and carried a potentially bigger price. Do you feel indebted to them and to anyone in particular

I m a black gay male so there are so many people from the civil rights movement and then also from the gay rights movement. And sports figures. The list goes on and on. There are too many names to mention. Martina Navratilova. I m a huge fan of hers. And even today with Brittney Griner Esera Tuaolo Robbie Rogers Dave Kopay. There are so many people who have come before me both as a black male and then as a gay male who have sort of paved the road for me . . .

Now it s time for me to pave the road for somebody else to be a great teammate society being the team. It s my responsibility to acknowledge those who came before me give credit to them and then there are those who are going to come after me and it s my responsibility to lift them up.
