New York State Dream Act to be discussed by Assembly Tuesday

The New York State Dream Act pushed by undocumented Syracuse University student Georgina Perez on Syracuse.com this morning will be discussed by the Ways and Means Committee of the New York State Assembly Tuesday.

Perez in her commentary published on Syracuse.com asked state Sen. David Valesky to support and co sponsor the Senate version of the legislation. Earlier this year Valesky declined to support the legislation.

Similar legislation has passed the Assembly in the past but it has always died in the Senate.

The Dream Act as proposed would do two things for undocumented immigrants who are college bound. It would create a privately funded scholarship fund and open up their access to state funded financial aid. The estimated annual cost to expand financial aid to a potential 6 200 students is $19.5 million. The state spends $1 billion on financial aid annually.
