In Mijo Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) managed to talk himself into keeping his pinky finger and negotiated for the lives of two kids who were dumb enough or simply woefully unlucky enough to mess with the loosest cannon in Albuquerque. We also learned a little more about the mental illness that forced Jimmy's brother Chuck (Michael McKean) to be housebound and grounded.
But Why Would You Call a Little Old Lady a Biznatch Though As in the pilot the two skateboarding brothers continued to harangue Tuco's abuelita for a payout after she hit them with her car. In an ill advised move one of them called the grandmother a biznatch ... at which point Tuco calmly sent her upstairs to watch her shows and did what Tuco does beat the ever loving crap out of the two boys using his grandmother's cane. When she returned he was scrubbing blood (or salsa as he told her) out of the carpet.
Jimmy Knows the Difference Between a Condiment and Bodily FluidsPicking back up at the end of the pilot we heard Jimmy knock on the door claim to be the law and get pulled into the house with a gun pointed at his head.Concerned about the commotion abuelita pointed out the salsa on the carpet (it might stain ). Jimmy knew very well the stain wasn't salsa and more to the point that he was in danger. This was when the wheels in Slippin' Jimmy's brain started turning.
Explaining himself at a million words per minute he tried to impress upon the unimpressed Tuco that those boys were just idiots and that it was all a misunderstanding that he would take his clients and leave and that he saw nothing absolutely nothing.
Wow you got a mouth on you said Tuco. Indeed. Put it on your business card Jimmy.
Tuco decided to let Jimmy free the boys until Jimmy removed the duct tape and they shouted that Jimmy wanted to set up Tuco and his abuelita. Tuco didn't really enjoy hearing he'd been played.
Cue Jimmy's body landing in the desert duct tape over his own mouth. It's too soon for desert standoffs AMC. (RIP Hank )
Hey Use Your Words Okay Once again Jimmy tried to explain himself properly this time. Jimmy told Tuco that he just wanted the Kettlemans' business because their case would mean an enormous amount of publicity for him. Unfortunately the boys were too dumb to get hit by the right car.Tuco as understanding as ever affixed a pair of pliers to Jimmy's pinky finger. Hey use your words okay Jimmy begged.
Foolishly (maybe due to the tightening pliers ) Jimmy lied he was a special agent named Steel. Luckily Tuco's associate Nacho (Michael Mando) could see through Jimmy's desperate ploy and asked Jimmy who he really was. Jimmy once again tried the truth.
Can't kill a lawyer for no reason Nacho told Tuco and they decided Jimmy would live because he showed Tuco respect.
Thing 1 and Thing 2 however ...
While Jimmy has proven to be a hustler that doesn't mean he wanted to see teenagers murdered. He tried to appeal to Tuco's softer side Tuco couldn't possibly kill the boys their mother would be upset
They were guilty sure but Jimmy insisted that Tuco's punishment needed to fit the crime. Tuco didn't really understand that reasoning. (Flash forward to the aforementioned No Doze beating which just happened to be foreshadowed in Mijo. )
Jimmy managed to negotiate for the teens' lives but it cost them one broken leg each Jimmy and Tuco shook on it and everything.
You are the worst lawyer cried Tweedle Dee as Jimmy wheeled him into the emergency room. I just talked you down from a death sentence to six months probation. I'm the best lawyer ever.
Jimmy Tries to Date Ends Up Passed Out on His Brother's CouchBob Odenkirk and Michael McKean in Better Call Saul
Lewis Jacobs / AMC
On a date with a woman who seemed well let's call her available Jimmy began to lose his nerve as the patrons around him snapped breadsticks which reminded him of his time in the desert. Rushing to the bathroom to vomit he decided to get properly plastered and instead of getting lucky found his way onto his brother's couch in the middle of the night.I don't think you grounded yourself Chuck warned as a low buzzing sound hummed clearly from Chuck's own mind. He grabbed Jimmy's pants with a pair of salad tongs shook out the offending cell phone and tossed it into the yard.
Jimmy woke up drooling and found his brother wearing a space blanket.
Chuck had also found the urgent care bill for Thing 1 and Thing 2 when he shook out Jimmy's pants and he was thoroughly unimpressed. Jimmy insisted. I'm not backsliding. This isn't Slippin' Jimmy. But wasn't it
Regardless Jimmy had no patience for Chuck on this particular day and demanded that his brother take off the space blanket saying I didn't do anything wrong. Chuck replied It had nothing to do with that. It was your phone. Still he begrudgingly took off the blanket.
Even in the midst of their obvious dysfunction it was clear that these two try to look out for each other. Still they both need stability and both brothers are woefully ill equipped for that task.
Knowing how the consequences of his pride would effect Chuck's life Jimmy returned to the public defender's office he'd sworn off. What do you want asked the bored receptionist. Jimmy Not to starve to death.
A montage of cases and more appearances from disgruntled parking attendant Mike (Jonathan Banks) followed. It's show time Jimmy told himself in the mirror before every case once with a security guard standing right by him. It's from a movie Jimmy defended. He sees himself as a character in his own life when he begins to sweat you can see that character Saul Goodman really take over a facade like any actor's.
Nacho ReturnsLater with a pillow stashed in the filing cabinet of his office inside the Zen Nail Spa Jimmy intended to follow up the most grim round of day drinking ever with some equally grim sofa bed napping but the nail salon receptionist told him he had a customer.Who else could it be but Nacho
Nacho asked Jimmy questions about the case that had landed him in the desert with Tuco about Craig Kettleman who robbed the state of upwards of a million dollars. I'm going to rip them off said Nacho telling Jimmy that he liked ripping off thieves because they wouldn't go to the cops.
Despite the offer of a finder's fee (a cool $100 000) Jimmy refused Nacho's offer. He wasn't trying to rip off the Kettlemans by faking a car accident he was just trying to get their business. A fine line to draw ... and surely one that Jimmy will have to reconcile again and again as the season goes on.
Nacho couldn't understand Jimmy's angle but he left him with his number anyway For when you figure out you're in the game.
Tip to Nacho You probably won't need to wait too long buddy.
