Gory Power Rangers fan film shut down over copyright issues

The irony of Vimeo giving JosephKahn a staff pick just before taking down the film is kinda hilarious

Ben Brainerd ( ben_brainerd) February 24 2015

On the original Vimeo upload Kahn had distanced himself and his film from the official Power Rangers franchise with a statement saying that he was distributing his film for free and was not looking to make a profit from it.

However Vimeo removed the video apparently after receiving a copyright complaint from Saban's company Saban Brands.

Seventy year old Haim Saban is worth an estimated $3 billion and is ranked by Forbes as the 143rd richest person in America.

In a series of tweets Kahn expressed his disbelief at Vimeo's decision.

Vimeo Vimeo has to follow the DMCA and act on takedown notices from copyright owners. Please talk to legal vimeo.com for more info.

1. vimeo Everyone is noticing you took down the short but youtube didn't. Tons of fan films exist online. Free speech/fair use.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

2. vimeo Every image in POWER/RANGERS is original footage. Nothing was pre existing. There is no copyrighted footage in the short.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

3. vimeo I am not making any money on it and I refuse to accept any from anyone. It was not even kickstarted I paid for it myself.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

4. vimeo This was made to be given away for free. It is just as if I drew a pic of Power Rangers on a napkin and I gave it to my friend.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

5. vimeo Is it illegal to give pic I drew of a character on a napkin to someone for free No. The world is watching your actions right now.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

6. vimeo If you are going to brand yourself as a place for filmmakers and shorts then protect. Otherwise we all go elsewhere. Soon.

Joseph Kahn ( JosephKahn) February 24 2015

Kahn wasn't the only one bewildered by Vimeo's decision.

Once again Hollywood/Saban Brands does not understand the internet or their core demographic. Don't try 2 remove this http //t.co/5chAUbWIWC

You'd think that a studio after seeing this Power Rangers short would just hand Joseph and Adi a case of money to do what they want. SMH.

Lexi Alexander ( Lexialex) February 25 2015

Fans of the film joined Kahn in raising the issue of parody as fair use.

Hey vimeo my POWER/RANGERS short you took down is protected under fair/use/free speech/satire. If anyone wants to see it holla at vimeo

In addition to its success on YouTube the film trended on Facebook and proved a hit with both Power Rangers fans and people who had never watched the original show.
