SYRACUSE N.Y. Baldwinsville singer Julia Goodwin had a long wait on America's Got Talent The Results show to find out she was eliminated on Wednesday. Goodwin wearing the same long red dress she appeared in for her live performance Tuesday looked immobile as the announcement was made. Singer Miguel Dakota beat her out for the semi final slot as did singer Emily West the first pick on the show's results night.
Comedian Dan Naturman illusionist David and Leeman and Salsa dance troupe Baila Conmigo also advanced to the semi finals on the NBC TV show.
Goodwin was one of 12 performers on Tuesday's first live show in Radio City Music Hall in Season 9 of the talent competition. Judges Howard Stern Howie Mandel and Mel B complimented Goodwin while at the same time expressing doubts about her voice and suitability on the talent show. TV audiences could still weigh in and cast votes for their favorite performers.
Ultimately Goodwin was turned away. She may be leaving but another 36 contestants will perform in hopes of getting to the next round and finally winning the $1 million grand prize.
Goodwin began her AGT experience as a 15 year old invited to Los Angeles to audition in April. Now she's 16 years old and headed for her junior year at C.W. Baker High School. In 2013 she won Great American Songbook Vocal Academy Competition and a $3 000 grand prize.
On Wednesday's AGT results show TV viewers saw flashbacks of the Tuesday episode. Julia's father John Goodwin sat on a couch backstage with Julia's singing competition Emily West and Miguel Dakota. There was a profile shot of John smiling while watching his daughter perform. After she came off stage John wrapped his arms around Julia for a huge hug.
In the 8 p.m. AGT recap show on Wednesday Julia was interviewed after coming off stage. I'm really hoping praying that I get through to the next round because I had so much fun. I just want to come back and prove to the judges that I can impress them she said.
Just because Julia is off the show don't give up on AGT yet. Another Central New York will get his shot in the quarter finals. Singer Jonah Smith who grew up in Syracuse and now lives in Los Angeles is tentatively scheduled to perform on Aug. 19.
If Smith survives the quarter finals he heads to the semi finals on Aug. 26 and Sept. 2. The winner of America's Got Talent will be chosen at the finals Sept. 16 and 17. The grand prize is a $1 million.
America's Got Talent is not the first time Julia Goodwin has played New York City. She performed with singer Michael Feinstein at Birdland in December. The New York Times music critic Stephen Holden was impressed describing her as a phenomenally gifted teenager from Baldwinsville N.Y. who sang lucid unornamented renditions of Feeling Good and Darn That Dream. She is as impressive as any of the vocal wunderkinds on 'The Voice.' Goodwin also sang the national anthem at the Indianapolis Colts home game in December. And she opened the MT Syracuse Jazz Fest earlier this month.
Central New York has not seen the last of the young singer the daughter of Carrie and John Goodwin of Baldwinsville.
