Everyone Is Talking About Pete Davidsons SNL Debut as They Should Be

If SNL's future looks anything like young comedian Pete Davidson's first appearance on the show Saturday night here's to another four decades.

Davidson who was cast back in September made his first appearance in Saturday's Chris Pratt hosted Season 40 opener during Weekend Update which was helmed by Colin Jost and new co anchor Michael Che a former SNL writer who left to join The Daily Show.

In the segment 20 year old Davidson the resident young person and the first SNL cast member to be born in the 90s took to the desk to offer commentary on a story about a kid who defiled a Jesus statue but quickly evolved into a rant about the upside of performing sexual acts for money. People would be like 'Pete you must be gay.' I'd be like 'No I'm a business man ' Davidson quipped at one point.

It was a raunchy sketch sure but also the best use of Davidson a stand up comedian who was on the rise prior to being cast that could have been imagined. And for the writers to immediately recognize this new cast member's strengths and pen a natural feeling debut that felt like a mini set at the Laugh Factory is a good sign.

A great sign actually because this isn't something they were able to do with last season's new blood John Milhiser No l Wells and Brooks Wheelan.

It also helped that the crowd immediately seemed to warm to the performer who couldn't help by crack a smile a couple of times unintentionally adding charm to his whole bit.

This will be a hard debut to follow up on next week. But really is there any topping Chris Pratt giving you a kudos during the big bow

Che's debut meanwhile was a bit rockier. He seemed nervous fumbled on his words and didn't have the best material to work with. That said his chemistry with Jost was an improvement over last season's pairing. (Still however you'll find people who say that Update ousted the wrong co anchor.)

Speaking of Cecily Strong her return as Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation with at a Party was on point as ever and paired with Leslie Jones's appearance as relationship expert it turned what would have been a so so Update into a highlight of the night.

Much of the rest of the night was everything that could have been expected lovable Pratt was a lovable host especially when doing musical bits the NFL was the Subject of the Night with Pratt at one point playing Commissioner Roger Goodell and there was a Marvel spoof in which the Guardians of the Galaxy star donned a Princess Leia outfit. Okay the latter was not exactly what we expected but it was pretty great.
