George Clooney has finally tied the knot with human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin. According to one of the actor s reps the couple were wed on Saturday in Venice Italy. A number of Clooney s celebrity friends attended the event including Matt Damon Bill Murray Julia Roberts and Emily Blunt many of whom were ushered into the region by water taxi. The grand spectacle was held in the Aman hotel which overlooks the Grand Canal from which the guests arrived.
The Oscar winning actor and his bride are expected to continue celebrations over the weekend before filing documents on Monday to make the marriage official. While the couple continue to celebrate their union many are questioning who Amal Alamuddin is.
Born in Beirut Lebanon Alamuddin comes from the Lebanese Druze family. Her mother was a foreign editor for a newspaper and her father previously taught business studies at the American University of Beirut. She also has three siblings including sister Tala and her two half brothers Samer and Ziad.
Alamuddin works as a British Lebanese lawyer and activist. The 36 year old barrister is employed at London s Doughty Street Chambers where she specializes in extradition human rights and criminal law.
She graduated from the University of Oxford before moving on to study a Masters of Law degree at the New York University School of Law. Since 2011 the esteemed lawyer has represented publisher journalist and WikiLeaks co founder Julian Assange.
In 2013 Alamuddin was appointed advisor to the UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan during the crisis in Syria. She also offered her legal expertise to the Drone Inquiry which investigated the use of drones in combating terrorist operations. More recently however she has been tasked with looking into potential violations in the Gaza Strip that allegedly took place during the ongoing Israel Gaza conflict.
She co edited a book called The Law and Practice of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and has also authored several chapters and article publications on international and criminal law. According to one of Alamuddin s career profiles these books have been published by the Oxford University Press. Her impressive academic credentials are also rounded off by her linguistic talents as she is fluent in both French and Arabic.
According to Reuters the chief executive of Alamuddin s law firm recently sent their well wishes to the happy couple She brings a bright light to everything she is involved in and I am so delighted at her happy news.
Clooney and Alamuddin became engaged back in April of this year when Clooney presented her with a 7 carat emerald cut diamond ring the ring was estimated to have cost the Gravity star a whopping $750 000.
The pair were reportedly married by former mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni who is also one of Clooney s close friends. It is rumored the two will remain in Venice and have a second civil ceremony on Monday at the 16th century Palazzo Cavalli.
