No Google Fiber for San Jose yet

Google announced on its blog that Google Fiber will expand to the Southeastern U.S. in the near future.

While San Jose didn't make the cut for this round of Google Fiber it still has a chance.

Google announced on its blog today that Google Fiber Internet service the speedy fiber optic network that was first introduced five years ago runs up to 100 times faster than current basic broadband will soon be coming to 18 cities across four new metro areas Atlanta Charlotte Nashville and Raleigh Durham.

The company wrote that it has five other metro areas in reserve for Google Fiber for the time being Phoenix Portland Salt Lake City San Antonio and San Jose. There will be updates on these cities later this year.

The city of San Jose noted that Google Fiber is a natural fit for the area being that it's part of Silicon Valley. The city has heard intermittently from residents expressing interest in Google Fiber coming to the area said David Vossbrink director of communications for the city.

We (the city) have made the case for Google over the past year he said. It's a natural location. It's right in Google's backyard. Symbolically it would very fitting.

At the same time the city recognizes San Jose is a big area and that presents lots of geographic and technology challenges he said. Google recognizes Google Fiber is a significant capital investment and the city expects Google to continue to carefully gather information and plans Vossbrink said.

The cost of the Google fiber Internet service that has download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second for residents in Austin Texas is $70 a month. Small businesses there can sign up for a $100 monthly service while Google also sells a combination TV and Internet service for $130 per month.
