US Open Federer moves on to Round 2

NEW YORK Roger Federer playing in his record tying 56th consecutive Grand Slam earned a routine first round win Tuesday at the U.S. Open cruising past Grega Zemlja of Slovakia 6 3 6 2 7 5.

And a routine win for Federer who has one title and lost to three players ranked outside the top 50 this year is a good thing.

The match had been postponed from Monday night because of rain.

U.S. MEN Isner Querrey advance

Federer who enters as the No. 7 seed his lowest in a decade had 12 aces and 35 winners.

Federer played aggressively moving forward when he had his opportunities.

I saw quickly that he was hitting the ball hard and flat through the court Federer said. You don't want to then move backwards and just try to make the shot because then he can really even go bigger on it. ... I decided also to play aggressive. By doing that didn't have many rallies. It was more of a serving contest.

The 62nd ranked Zemlja from Slovenia reached the third round at Wimbledon this year. That's one round further than Federer who was stunned by 116th ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky in his second match there.

UPSET Janowicz ousted by qualifier

Federer won 20 of 21 points at the net to advance in 93 minutes.

At age 32 and despite the struggles Federer insists his passion for tennis is still there.

I'm in a good spot right now he said. I want to enjoy it as long as it lasts.

Federer entered Tuesday 32 11 a .744 winning percentage that doesn't sound too bad until you consider his career mark at the start of this season was .816 and he's had years where he went 81 4 (.953) and 92 5 (.948). He's only won one tournament in 2013 which would be great for some guys but Federer topped 10 titles three times and hasn't won fewer than three in any season since 2001.

Clearly when you win everything it's fun. That doesn't necessarily mean you love the game more. You just like winning being on the front page lifting trophies doing comfortable press conferences. It's nice. But that doesn't mean you really actually love it love it said Federer whose streak of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals ended with a second round defeat at Wimbledon against an opponent ranked 116th. That maybe shines through maybe more in times when you don't play that well. For me I knew it winning or losing practice court or match court that I love it.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had no trouble in his first round match rolling over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6 1 6 2 6 2.

Djokovic needed only 82 minutes he is seeking his second title and fourth straight final at Flushing Meadows.

In one of the biggest upsets of the tournament 17 year old American Victoria Duval upset 2011 champion Samantha Stosur 5 7 6 4 6 4.

In the last match of the night No. 2 seed Victoria Azarenka opened with a 6 0 6 0 victory against Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany.

Earlier Tuesday Petra Kvitova needed a third set again but she found her groove at the end on her way to a 6 2 3 6 6 1 victory against Misaki Doi of Japan.

Kvitova the No. 7 seed from the Czech Republic is the 2011 Wimbledon champion but she has not been past the fourth round in New York.

So I have good motivation to improve my results here she said.

WOZNIACKI Dress causes an uproar

Kvitova had 2 9 winners but the same number of unforced errors on a windy day.

Kvitova has gone to three sets a lot late including a stretch of six in a row across three tournaments winning four of them.

Ana Ivanovic had not trouble with Anna Tatishvili on Tuesday in her opening round match at the U.S. Open.

The former No. 1 from Serbia seeded 13th controlled it from the start in a 6 2 6 0 win.

Very pleased with the performance today Ivanovic said. It was a little bit in the beginning shaky you know lots of breaks. Once I found my rhythm I sort of felt more comfortable as the match went on. I felt the game plan sort of settled in. I was very pleased with my performance at the end.

Also advancing comfortably to Round 2 was No. 14 seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia who routed 2009 semifinalst Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 6 1 6 1.

No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark fought off the power and aggression of Duan Ying Ying of China in a 6 2 7 5 win.

Wozaniacki reached the 2009 final her only Grand Slam final.

I always believe in that so I never lost the belief Wozniacki said about her chances to be playing in the final match. There is still so many matches to go so I just have to go one match at a time like always.

Fourth seeded Sara Errani posted a double bagel routing lucky loser Olivia Rogowska 6 0 6 0.

On the men's side No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych had no trouble with Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6 1 6 4 6 1.

No. 10 seed Milos Raonic of Canada handled Thomas Fabbiano of Italy 6 3 7 6 (8 6) 6 3.

The top American hope on the men's side John Isner rolled over Filippo Volandri of Italy 6 0 6 2 6 3.

Also advancing was Sam Querrey who defeated Guido Pella of Argentina 7 6 (7 3) 4 6 6 1 6 2.

Another American Varvara Lepchenko lost to Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 6 7 (5 7) 6 2 7 6 (7 5).

Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka highlight the night session.
