Former MLB player Darryl Hamilton killed in apparent murder suicide

Former major league player Darryl Hamilton was killed in an apparent murder suicide police in Pearland Texas confirmed to the Houston Chronicle. He was 50 years old.

Police were called to a home in the Houston suburb of Pearland by a person reporting a disturbance inside the home on Sunday afternoon. When they arrived they found Hamilton's body near the front doorway and the body of Monica Jordan 44 in a separate part of the home. The couple's 13 month old son was found unharmed in the home and turned over to Child Protective Services.

Hamilton was shot multiple times and Jordan had apparently died of a self inflicted gunshot wound police said.

Hamilton played 13 seasons in the majors from 1988 2001 as an outfielder. He played for five different teams and was a career .291 hitter.

Hamilton had been working as an analyst for the MLB Network until his death.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement regarding Hamilton's death.

Hamilton's former teams the New York Mets Milwaukee Brewers San Francisco Giants Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies all issued statements on his passing.

Chad Greenway Hosts Gridiron Gallop On Fathers Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) You won t find many athletes more involved in the community than Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway.

His charity work through his Lead the Way Foundation earned Greenway the NFL Players Association s highest honor for community service this year the Byron Whizzer White Award.

And he was back at it again Sunday morning hosting his ninth annual Father s Day 5K the Gridiron Gallop at Lake Nokomis.

A day that took on added significance this year because it was Greenway s first Father s Day without his father.

Such a nice guy Greenway said of his father Alan. Didn t have an enemy in the world. I mean there s few of us that can say that. He was definitely one of them . and a guy you wanted to be around.

Chad Greenway is one of those guys now. Of course he makes it awfully easy to be around him as much time as he spends in the community.

You re here being a player and trying to take care of your football business but you want leave a mark in something else too Greenway said. And so you don t want to just come here and reap all the benefits and not give something back.

Of course Greenway credits his father for that mindset.

In everybody s case you kind of (act) you know how you re taught Greenway said. Try to be that guy that kids can look to and say hey there s a good example of somebody I want to be like.

That s how Greenway looked at his dad. And that s what he lost when he lost his dad in December after watching him battle leukemia for more than two years.

Always supportive Greenway said. He was just always there for us. Every step of the way.

So this being Greenway s first Father s Day without his father was difficult.

Yeah it s been an emotional week Greenway said. And I think it ll continue to be an emotional next couple days. It s certainly been difficult. (I) try not to think about it just because it is difficult but at the same time on Father s Day you re trying to remember him and especially with my kids just trying to continue to bring him up and speak about him and all the great things he was all about.

Now with three girls of his own Greenway is trying to be about those things himself.

Father s Day this is the day for us Greenway said. This is the day we hang our hat on as dads. So (after the 5K run) I m going to coach two baseball games both my older ones play baseball. And that s what it s all about. Football is what I do but it s certainly not who I am. And I don t want that to define me in any way. Good bad or indifferent as far as a player goes. I want to be something bigger than that be a dad and a husband and then do charity work and do stuff that supersedes yourself.

You might not have met Alan Greenway but if you ve met Chad and there s a good chance you have now you know where he gets it from.

Everybody liked him Greenway said. He had a contagious smile personality and (was) a guy you wanted to be around.

Greenway s Gridiron Gallop raised money for Minneapolis Parks and Rec athletic programs.

Was the unplayable Chambers Bay golf course fit to host the US Open

There s something magical about watching a group of professionals tearing into a golf course. If you ever have the chance to follow a world class golfer around one of the planet s great courses take it. The way they go after fairways attack greens drop shots beside pins and then spin them back to within putting distance is a sight to behold. Watching a golfer make a mockery of a course s supposed par score is one of the great experiences in sport.

That being said there s also something deliciously satisfying about seeing a group of professionals clambering their way around a course and being as baffled by it as the rest of us. If you enjoy your golf with a healthy dose of schadenfreude you will have enjoyed the US Open this weekend.

Henrik Stenson likened playing the Chambers Bay course to putting on broccoli . Gary Player spoke with horror about the player who missed the green by a yard and end up 50 yards down in the valley . Welcome to our world Gary the harder we practise the unluckier we get. For most of us golf will always be a mournful ballad entitled 50 yards down in the valley .

Gary Player

The worst golf course I might ve ever seen in the 63 years as a professional golfer. The USGA who I admire and have chosen great golf courses in this great United States of America they re preaching speed of play. Enjoyment. User friendly. This golf course here if you re a 10 handicap you couldn t break 100 if you had the best day of your life. They ve got pros putting from 20 feet and hitting the ball 20 foot to the right a man misses the green by a yard and he s 50 yards down in the valley. I mean I don t understand it. It s 7 900 yards long. The world is in dire straits with water. Can you imagine the costs to maintain this And it s a public course but they ll probably charge the public $200 to play it. I d like to challenge anyone with a 16 handicap to do better than 40 over par. It s basically unplayable.

Sergio Garc a

Why do they do this to the course This is a great championship with great history. The US Open deserves so much better than this. It hurts to see what they have done to the course. These greens come on let s be honest you can t say they are good. It s just not right.

Billy Horschel

I ve been waiting for this moment all week. I think a lot of players and I m one of them have lost some respect for the USGA and this championship this year for the greens. When you have a majority of the players commenting publicly and some of them aren t because they don t want to get the pushback from it then there s an issue. I heard someone say that the TV is making the greens look worse than they are. That s a complete lie.

Ernie Els

We have to go out there in front of millions of people and putt on these things. The USGA they have got to take a bit of responsibility.

Justin Rose

I had a five foot putt on the first and didn t have the first idea what it was going to do. It felt like outdoor bingo at that point.

Ian Poulter

What wasn t playable were the green surfaces. If this was a regular PGA tour event lots of players would have withdrawn and gone home on Wednesday but players won t do that for a major. They were simply the worst most disgraceful surface I have ever seen on any tour in all the years I have played. The US Open deserves better than that.

Henrik Stenson

It is borderline laughable at some of the greens and some of the pin positions. When we re actually almost better off plugged in a bunker than being on the top of a ridge like on the fourth. And it s pretty much like putting on broccoli as well.

Dustin Johnson who led for most of the weekend but lost out to Jordan Speith at the last hole was complimentary about the course. From the first time I played it I liked it he said. It s a lot of fun and you need to use your imagination. What do you think Should courses as difficult unpredictable and unpopular as Chambers Bay host the US Open

Did You Catch Angel Softs Ad Wishing Moms a Happy Fathers Day (POLL)

Father s Day is upon us and millions have spent the last hours in millions of different ways and there are likely just as many viewpoints on the meaning of this day just as with Mother s Day.

Which may be part of the reason why Angel Soft ran an ad this week featuring adults talking about all the ways their mothers stepped up and raised them essentially taking on the role of mother and father

But what has received the most attention is the conclusion of the commercial where the speakers take turns wishing their moms a Happy Father s Day.

The ad has touched a nerve. Some people really liked it sharing that it captures what their growing up years were like. One person commented on Angel Soft s Facebook page Beautiful I always wish my DAD a Happy Mother s Day.

But plenty of people hated the ad saying it represents yet another swipe against the stereotypical absentee passive never around do nothing dad and why is Angel Soft crowding out dads from their special day particularly those who don t fit the stereotypes.

Distasteful at best Darin Hadinger commented. Mothers have Mother s Day Single Parents have a day as well. Let s stop watering down or de valuing the importance of a father. I would never try to pretend or replace my kids mother regardless that we are apart. She has her role with the kids as I have mine.

In fact one woman devoted an entire op ed to the subject declaring that she wouldn t be wishing her mother a happy Father s Day. Here s the crux of Syreeta Martin s argument

And I certainly don t want my daughters thinking that a woman can provide the same kind of love to her child that a man can. Ask any daddy s girls if there s a love on this earth like their fathers and I guarantee they ll tell you there isn t.

So no Angel Soft and America it is not a Happy Father s Day to Mothers. We have our day and quite frankly at the rate that society is changing we need to go back to the drawing board. Find one day that allows us to honor all parents and caregivers. Thank you.

And in the midst of the backlash other outlets fought back in favor of the ad. Esquire contributor Dave Holmes What Are Men s Rights Groups Angry About Now Toilet Paper said as much.

So tell us readers of TheBlaze What do you think of the Angel Soft ad Fine and dandy Outrageous

Take TheBlaze poll below and make sure to share your more detailed points in the comments section as well.

Charlie Sheen Did Not Have a Happy Fathers Day

Gregg DeGuire WireImage Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen arrive at the Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton January 20 2002 in Beverly Hills California. Judging by Twitter anyway

While dads around the world were enjoying Father s Day on Sunday Charlie Sheen was once again ranting on Twitter.

The target of the actor s ire was his ex wife Denise Richards with whom he has two daughters and a lot of baggage the two split in 2005 after Richards accused Sheen of threatening her. On Sunday Sheen seemed to resurrect some of that bad blood by tweeting D Richards is a heretic washed up piglet Shame pile.

Happy Father s Day he added.

The actor also tweeted Brooke M is a sexy rok star whom I adore seemingly in reference to another ex wife Brooke Mueller. While those tweets have since been deleted Sheen also posted an expletive filled open letter about Richards which can still be found online. In the letter which is addressed to the media Sheen calls Richards the worst mom alive and a despicable charlatan.

For her part Richards appeared to take the high road with this tweet

Happy Dad's Day charliesheen have a great trip in Mexico Kids were disappointed u weren't here for it Hey we'll celebrate when u r back

Charlie Sheen goes on Twitter rant against ex wife Denise Richards

Charlie Sheen decided to spend his Father's Day tearing down his ex wife Denise Richards with whom Sheen shares two daughters 11 year old Sam and 10 year old Lola.

Sheen spent his Sunday directing a stream of vicious tweets towards his ex in which he called Richards a terrorist and the worst mom alive.

The profanity laden rant began with a tweet that read Brooke M is a sexy rok star whom I adore D Richards a heretic washed up piglet Shame pile Happy Father's Day

WATCH See a Young Charlie Sheen Slam His First Ever Movie

Brooke M is presumably Sheen's ex wife Brook Mueller the mother of Sheen's twin 6 year old sons Bob and Max who Sheen divorced in 2011.

After a slew of similarly aggressive tweets Sheen posted an open letter slamming Richards with a string of incoherent and almost nonsensical paragraphs.

While Sheen went through and deleted all the tweets slamming his ex his profanity riddled open letter to the media is still available to read online. It could be considered NSFW due to the massive amount of profanity in the letter.

WATCH Hollywood's Most Nuclear Divorces

In it Sheen shares poetic gems such as Denise Richards is a shake down piece of s t doosh phace and see u in court you evil terrorist sack of landfill rash. And those the most tame comments from the open letter.

Richards however has kept her response classy and profanity free. She tweeted on Sunday Happy Dad's Day charliesheen have a great trip in Mexico Kids were disappointed u weren't here for it Hey we'll celebrate when u r back

When one of Richards' followers asked if Sheen was in Mexico for work Richards' replied simply Nope.

Sheen and Richards have had a combative relationship since their divorce in 2006. Sheen previously accused Richards of not allowing him to see their children and in 2013 he tried to reduce the amount of child support he was required to pay to her arguing that he was being punished by Richards after their divorce.

On Sunday Taylor Swift wrote an open letter to Apple explaining why she pulled her album from Apple Music and now Apple says it's changing its policy.

We hear you taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love Apple tweeted Apple's Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue on Sunday night. He said the company is reversing its decision about not paying artists during the music service's free trial in direct response to the singer's letter of protest.

Swift was psyched tweeting early Monday morning I am elated and relieved. Thank you for your words of support today. They listened to us.

Swift's post on Tumblr entitled To Apple Love Taylor addressed to the historically progressive and generous company as she called Apple. Swift wrote to explain why she's dropping her album 1989 from the new streaming service Apple Music She disagreed with Apple's decision to forego paying artists during a free three month trial of the service.

This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field but will not get paid for a quarter of a year's worth of plays on his or her songs wrote Swift.

Well Apple found Swift's words persuasive. Cue tweeted that the company will pay artist for streaming even during customer's free trial period he said.

Cue elaborated on the tweets in an interview with Billboard saying When I woke up this morning and saw what Taylor had written it really solidified that we needed to make a change. And so that's why we decide we will now pay artists during the trial period.

Celebrity Family Feud kicks off with the weirdest question ever

Family Feud is an endless magical wonderful source of comedy so the celebrity version of the show has the potential to be so much more. And during its season premiere Sunday night it did NOT disappoint.

In a question for Anthony Anderson s mother Steve Harvey got to say the following sentence on television

Name something a nude magician pulls a rabbit out of

Wait what Yes that was a 100% legitimate question on this family program as Anthony Anderson would remind his mother after her response was his nuts. Everyone was laughing at her answer but seriously what was she supposed to say instead As she pointed out he s naked. Nobody asked the more important question Why do we live in a world where nude magicians are apparently prevalent enough to be a question on Family Feud

Anyways never change Family Feud we love you and all your insanity.

Was Chambers Bay a tough course on spectators except for those Greg Norman ...

Chambers Bay whatever one s impression of the course itself did not allow for a strong spectator experience during the U.S. Open according to most accounts.

USGA officials acknowledge they ve been fielding complaints about unusually restrictive fan access to parts of the Chambers Bay golf course Jack Broom of the Seattle Times wrote noting that the USGA was recommending fans find seats in the grandstands rather than roaming a course with steep slopes.

Fans watch first fairway play from a distance (Getty Images)

I ve been to 10 majors including four U.S. Opens and this was the worst fan experience John Woodin 63 of Bellevue told Broom. This was an embarrassment.

That s why Fox analyst Greg Norman s response in a conversation with USGA President Tom O Toole early in the telecast on Sunday seemed odd. First the setup question asked by Tom Weiskopf.

Maybe the consideration in the future if you come back to do something more for the spectator getting them more involved closer to the game he said. Has that been talked about

Absolutely O Toole replied. We said all along we d do a post championship assessment. We said all along we knew this property has been difficult to traverse. We made a lot of adjustments after the Amateur here in 2010. Good point well taken. We have to be flexible looking at these sites post championship. We have to be critical of ourselves if we need to be. The spectator experience is very important here and we want it to be the best. And if we come back here there certainly will be adjustments.

This is when Norman countered with his experience mixing with the crowd on Saturday.

I actually walked with the spectators a little bit yesterday just to get their feedback he said. I specifically asked what do you guys think what do you think of the golf course how do you like it how s the presentation. One hundred percent of everyone was so enthusiastic and over the moon about the U.S. Open Championship being here.

Dwyane Wade Kobe Bryant in same backcourt Lakers reportedly have interest ...

Kobe and DWade in the same backcourt It apparently could happen if only for a year.

Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix cited sources as saying that there is mutual interest between Dwyane Wade and the Los Angeles Lakers should the 11 time all star opt out of his contract in Miami.

Wade 33 a 12 year veteran is due to make $16.1 million next season if he exercises his option with Miami. But Wade reportedly wants a raise and a long term deal and there's much talk that he may leave.

Both the Heat and the Lakers missed the playoffs this season.

Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak has said 17 time all star Kobe Bryant told him he plans to play one more season. Bryant led the Lakers to five NBA titles but has seen his last three seasons shortened due to injuries.

Wade helped the Heat win three NBA titles one with former Laker Shaquille O'Neal in 2006 and two with LeBron James in 2012 and '13 before James went back to Cleveland this year.

Wade's father Dwyane Wade Sr. showed up at an event recently wearing a Cavaliers T shirt but said on the internet radio show The Hot Corner that he hopes his son will stay in Miami.

The best answer I can probably give to that is you guys have had DWade ever since he came in the league let's just pray with God that he stays here the rest of the way Dwyane Wade Sr. said.

Wade meanwhile is apparently taking this business decision seriously. According to CBSSports.com and other outlets he took a four day executive education program at Harvard this month called The Business of Entertainment Media and Sports.

Ballers Recap Man Up

Enlarge icon Pinterest icon Facebook icon Close icon Ladies and gents the Rock. Photo HBO Prev Next Complete Series Coverage

This new dramedy from most of the team who gave you the long running HBO show (and its recent critically slammed dead in the water movie spinoff) seems to be working from that earlier program s same playbook It follows a multi million dollar celebrity filled entertainment industry seen through the eyes of a young star and his cronies. However Ballers is immediately doing what Entourage really should ve done It makes the crew s money man the star of the show. (Let s be honest here E was always more interesting than Vinnie ) And there s good reason for that The show is created by Stephen Levinson who shares executive producer credits with his longtime business partner/client Mark Wahlberg. So yeah E created Ballers.

The E on the show is Spencer Strassmore (Dwayne the Rock Johnson) a former Miami Dolphins defensive end who is now angling to be a financial adviser to NFL stars. Well if he s E then who s Vincent Chase Look no further than hotheaded wide receiver Ricky Jerret (former ball player/Denzel s son John David Washington) who nearly screws up his football dreams when he pops some smack talking dude at a club (immediately after hooking up with someone in the bathroom) and gets cut from the Packers. We also have Charles Greane (Omar Benson Miller) serving as a Johnny Drama/Turtle mash up a lovable less respected retired player who s just happy getting a job working at a Chevrolet dealership. As for who s Ari we have two motormouthed characters for that Jason (Troy Garity) Spencer s ex sports agent and Ricky s current one and Joe (Rob Corddry) Spencer s dickhead of a boss at his financial management firm.

With all this alpha male testosterone front and center one obviously thinks that Ballers is just going to be about men behaving badly and getting rewarded for it. (If Margaret s review is any indication then that s what we may have to look forward to in the coming episodes.) However the pilot does start off making our main ballers Spencer Ricky and Charles realize how much they need to take responsibility for their lives.

It s the death of Rodney an old divalicious teammate who died in a car crash (along with his unstable side chick) who brings our boys together. And even though his widow (singer and former Destiny s Child member LeToya Luckett) now has to deal with her husband s lack of a will she still has time to give our hero Spencer some words of encouragement. Start by helping yourself she tells him. You re a grown ass man so figure that shit out.

Although Johnson s million watt charisma keeps his character from looking like a complete mess Spencer is more or less a walking cautionary tale. The episode starts with him waking up to flashbacks of his pummeling glory years eventually aching and limping his way to the bathroom downing some painkillers and chewing those babies like Flintstone vitamins. But he definitely seems to have his priorities straight these days. When Ricky comes to him for advice as he considers retiring rather than getting traded (or pulling a Tiki Barber as Spencer calls it) Spencer definitely lays the smackdown on his candy ass

Let me tell you how it went down for the golden boy. I had this vision of my retirement day standing up at the podium microphone in front of me coach on one side the owner on the other family and friends around. You know how it really went down I was sitting up in my goddamn living room just staring at my cell phone waiting for that call to come in from the owner the GM. I would ve taken a call from the fucking trainer. Thank you Spence. Appreciate it Spence. Good luck Spence. You know when that call finally came Never You better wise the fuck up because you ve got one contract left. And when it s done you re gonna be out here on the streets with the rest of us. You keep fucking up like this you keep acting like a little kid when it s done and you re done you re gonna be broke and miserable. And you know what the worse part about it is Nobody will give a fuck about you.

Damn. I almost feel like the whole show was created just so the Rock could give that monologue. Yeah this is definitely his For Your Consideration moment.

Anyway thanks to a phone call Spencer makes to an ol Dolphins recruiting pal (Dul Hill) who also gets some intel from Charles when he swings by his dealership Ricky gets a shot to play in the Dolphins. He almost screws that up when he s one minute late to see the coach (Peter Berg who directed the episode) before he goes on a fishing trip. Luckily Ricky sticks around at the dock and the coach returns to welcome him to the team but not before Ricky gets the fish off the boat.

While Ricky is appearing to learn from his mistakes Spencer might ve made a big one by giving $300 000 of his own loot to rising player Vernon (Donovan Carter) who needs it because basically he has an unlimited number of people in his entourage he needs to take care of many of whom he doesn t know. Nevertheless Spencer agrees to pick him up as a client which seems to zip right past Vernon s head when Spencer extends his hand for a trusty shake. And Spencer may regret getting involved with him when the episode ends with him on a date trying to get money from an ATM and he has insufficient funds. As someone who s been down that road way too many times that was the most gut wrenching thing I ve seen this weekend and yes I have seen Inside Out

Hopefully as the weeks progress Ballers dodges the mistakes Entourage made about Hollywood and actually shows the football world as the cutthroat unforgiving physically and mentally debilitating atmosphere it can be and often is.

ONE STRAY THOUGHTI couldn t leave this recap without bringing up how women are portrayed on the show. And yes they are for the most part superficial eye candy. The first gal is laid out butt bald on Spencer s bed. Then of course we get the club groupie who disses Charles and gets a bathroom quickie with Ricky. And let s not forget the naked lady golfer who s giving Jason the reverse cowgirl treatment. Even Ricky s actual girlfriend (Anabelle Acosta) who seems to turn a blind eye to his creepin ways is a gorgeous lady who only cares that her man stays in the game. It s a good thing Charles has a dedicated wife (Jazmyn Simon) who s good looking but also a well written character. The playful chemistry she and Miller have was one of the nice surprises of the episode. I hope to God the writers don t screw that up.

Paulina Gretzky Comforts Dustin Johnson After He Loses U.S. Open to Jordan ...

Dustin Johnson didn't look too upset over Sunday's devastating U.S. Open loss. But then again we don't all have Paulina Gretzky to comfort us in times of need.

The 26 year old model rushed over to her fianc after he was beaten by 21 year old wunderkind Jordan Spieth on the 18th hole. At just three feet from the hole Johnson missed an easy putt that would've forced a playoff. Even Spieth was surprised by his win. I'm in shock he said.

Paulina gave her fianc a sweet peck and then passed Johnson their 5 month old son Tatum.

Earlier in the week Gretzky posted a pic of Tatum on a private jet. See you soon daddy she captioned the photo.

True Detective recap Everyone gets touched

I say man s because let s be real the addition of McAdams to the cast as fantastic as she is does not change the fact that True Detective is a story about men. That in itself doesn t make the story less worthwhile in my opinion the commonly accepted myth of masculinity is the most corrosive substance on the planet any deconstructions are more than welcome in my book. But look This is an episode where Paul experiences angst about a blow job where Ray s wife s rape has so utterly destroyed Ray himself that he is reduced to beating up his son s bullies fathers with brass knuckles. Ani s gained admission to the protagonists inner circle by acting for whatever reason entirely like how men are expected to she doesn t talk about sex she eschews intimacy she wears pants she carries two guns. A good woman Frank says to Ray mitigates our baser tendencies. What a good woman is presumably is not Ani.

The bigger question is whether or not True Detective in its second season with an unexpected year of success under its belt can truly skewer what it means to be male and offer some kind of way out too for its tortured characters. In the first season we saw Marty and Rust alienate everyone and everything and nearly die in order to serve their higher purpose by the end they concluded that they might not be good men but they could be the bad men that understood evil and how it lived in themselves and use that to take down other bad men. Maybe that would help a little bit in their own way. Not a happy conclusion but it s one that resonated.

So as self parodying as elements of The Western Book Of The Dead are I saw them as self aware signaling this is where the story must start. It s most prominent in Farrell s Ray a character that is on the brink of total collapse a booze soaked dervish of destruction reduced entirely to the id of bloodying those in his way or paying them off with stacks of cash. Through Farrell Ray has a certain disastrous charm making him a reeling juggernaut of destruction that you want to watch figure his life out or die whatever would end this awful downward cycle. Ani similarly is so invested in her hard ass personality that as convincingly as McAdams sells it I found myself waiting for the inevitable cracks in her defenses as useful as armor is everyone deserves a chance to take it off.

And the real hero of the hour is Vince Vaughn who turns in a performance I forgot he could deliver the surprisingly sensitive crime lord who loves and respects his wife a man who can manifest both vulnerability and ruthlessness. Just as Rust Cohle offered Matthew McConaughey a role few of us had expected of him Frank Semyon delivers Vaughn in fascinating deadly form. He seems to sink into the atmosphere of True Detective s second season with an effortlessness the other three characters don t quite yet exhibit perhaps because he s meant to Frank is the one steeped in corruption after all.

But most of all what I loved about The Western Book Of The Dead is the moody build up to the final few minutes which even without season one s celebrated director Cary Fukunaga (reportedly Fukunaga and Pizzolatto clashed on set leading to Fukunaga s departure from the show) is still beautifully shot and in its way indelible. (Fukunaga is replaced on this episode by Justin Lin who is hardly an amateur.) The big reveal of the episode is that Ray and Frank are working together now as they did before and their mingled cigarette smoke is the only source of brightness at their dark dive bar booth. The camera plays with our notion of space so that it took me a few moments to realize they re not just in the same bar but sitting at the same table not just accidentally together but really together. And that scene with its haunting folk guitarist/singer (which hey Mad Men did it first but I m a sucker for that kind of thing) and the slow inevitable build to what we know will finally happen the meeting of our three police protagonists from three different jurisdictions and their suspicious appraisals of each other casting long glares across a darkened highway. It s what I expected from the episode which yes does cheapen it a tiny bit. But it s still a welcome thrill a little like coming home.

I m interested to see Pizzolatto turn his lens to California and I m interested too to see him write about two presumably Italian American characters Ani Bezzerides and Ray Velcoro are presumably somewhat Italian as is Pizzolatto himself. There is something fitting about this season beginning on the summer solstice it s a time for hot lazy reflection and staring up at the stars.

Steve Harveys Celebrity Family Feud opens with Braxtons vs. Andersons

CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD Anthony Anderson vs Toni Braxton and Monica Potter vs Curtis Stone The series premiere of Celebrity Family Feud will feature actor Anthony Anderson s ( black ish ) family vs. 7 time Grammy Award winning artist Toni Braxton and her sisters. (ABC/Adam Taylor)TONI BRAXTON STEVE HARVEY ANTHONY ANDERSON

By RODNEY HO/ rho ajc.com originally filed Monday June 22 2015

Toni Braxton who used to live in Atlanta brought her sisters to battle Anthony Anderson s family in the first episode of ABC s Celebrity Family Feud hosted by part time Atlantan Steve Harvey.

Both families are playing for charity. The episodes were shot earlier this month in Los Angeles although Harvey shoots the regular episodes here in Atlanta. And two of Braxton s sisters still live in Atlanta.

Despite a slow start from Toni her family lifted her up and even she got a couple of answers right near the end. But credit Towanda and Tamar for getting enough right answers to win Fast Money and raise $25 000 for Lupus LA (since Toni has lupus.)

Sorry to say this but $25 000 seems awfully chintzy for a broadcast network giving out money for charity. I m just sayin . Where s Donald Trump when you need him (Oh wait we know that )

Things got down and dirty quickly from the first question Name something a nude magician might pull a rabbit out of.

Anderson His a

Toni was so flummoxed she didn t have an answer.

His mom Doris then said nuts.

This show is going to hell Harvey said. Indeed that garnered a big fat X.

Later Anderson said you can be naked and wear a hat. I ve done it That was the No. 1 answer.

The Braxtons had a chance to steal but Toni botched it by blurting out foot without getting proper feedback from her sisters. That wasn t on the list. Points went to the Andersons.

Question No. 2 with Tamar vs. Doris Name something the wife would not like to see the ex husband buy after the divorce.

Tamar got the No. 1 answer with car.

Trina who just got divorced said emphatically a ring for another woman. That was the No. 2 answer.

Toni uttered a new woman. Shockingly this was up there as a mail order bride.

The sisters almost cleared the board with six out of seven answers. Harvey laughed after Trina gave a bad answer ( a car seat ) and the sisters were not supportive. The tradition Family Feud members are supposed to clap and say good answer no matter how terrible the utterance.

Ultimately Anderson s answer motorcyle was rejected. The missing answer was a street whore.

The Braxtons move ahead 93 to 88.

Question 3 Top 7 answers on the board. To 100 men Name an animal more well endowed than you

Trina Elephant. Amazingly just 13 people answered that. But it was No. 2 and Trina won after Derrick s gorilla was a big fat zero.

Towanda confidently gave the No. 1 answer horse. Traci s giraffe got an X.

Toni tried hippo and received zip. Tamar said dog and her sisters were skeptical. It came in No. 3 and Tamar was vindicated. What the world is coming to Traci said.

Trina s bull came in No. 6. Towanda opted for walrus. It has the biggest penis. I looked it up But it didn t make the cut.

Anderson went for donkey and they won the points. The missing answers whale and lion.

The Andersons had a lead. But the last round typically can win the day.

Triple points Name a job just because they aren t good looking enough.

Towanda s answer Model was No. 1.

Traci goes for stripper. That was No. 4.

Toni (uh oh) picks news anchor. Surprise No. 3.

Tamar says actress for the win. And the Braxtons clear the board

Tamar and Towanda opt for fast money. Towanda was up first.

The fast money questions to 100 women.

After how dates do you start wearing sweats Towanda s answer 6 (0)

What is something people look for on Craig s List A car (26)

Name a pie that starts with the letter P. (37)

Name something a guy likes to do while watching the Super Bowl Eat food. (36)

A place where you find an aisle. A kitchen. (0)

Three good answers two bad ones. Not bad. 99 points.

Tamar ended up with two okay answers no answer on one and two great answers to seal the victory.

That would be four dates (11 points. Best answer was 10) a job on Craig s list (10) nothing for pie drinking beer for the Super Bowl (44) and the seal the deal answer of supermarket for aisle (57).

True Detective returns with Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell

True Detective could drive you to drink. Its second season (Sunday on HBO) arrives under cover of such darkness and psychic pain it seems to beg its audience to keep a bottle close by in a display of unity with its hard drinking protagonists.

You tying one on asks Frank Semyon (series star Vince Vaughn) an enterprising but beleaguered mobster as he sits across from tormented Detective Ray Velcoro (co star Colin Farrell) and watches him drain glass after glass of Frank's pricey Johnny Walker Blue.

Not particularly grunts Velcoro filling his glass again.

Of course if you were to tie one on while watching True Detective you might realize you're not the sort of high functioning alcoholic represented by Detective Velcoro who serves the city of Vinci a corrupt industrially ravaged neighbor of Los Angeles. Or by Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) a hard bitten Ventura County sheriff's detective.

Stick to soft drinks. True Detective this season even more than last demands a viewer's full attention to absorb the twisting multilayered puzzle taunting Ray and Ani along with Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) a troubled war veteran and California Highway Patrol motorcycle cop as well as Frank whose make or break him real estate deal is thrown in jeopardy as they all converge on a pivotal event the eerie murder of a Vinci city official.

That in a nutshell is what this season's True Detective encompasses law enforcement officers (the series title still applies) and attempts to find answers to a crime whose search is complicated by ulterior motives. (Hear Ray addressing a superior in a future episode One question. Am I supposed to solve this or not )

But what True Detective is this season may be no more important than how it differs from last season which of course was a triumph starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as they tackled in effect not one but two roles apiece former Louisiana State Police detectives being interrogated in 2012 about a homicide case that they were seen in flashbacks working in 1995.

Although Vaughn and Farrell are the nominal co leads this season and excellent the new saga doesn't call for last year's two man actors' showcase in a dual time frame. These co stars are fused into this season's larger ensemble in the present tense.

What truly ties the True Detective seasons together the voice and vision of Nic Pizzolatto. He created the series wrote all last year's episodes and has repeated that feat for the upcoming eight hours. And he apparently has never heard the expression If it ain't broke don't fix it having ditched the buddy drama format that worked so well to do his thing in other different ways this time.

How he's done it should become increasingly evident beyond the three episodes made available for preview. But he has clearly retained last year's weird fiction atmospherics of the Louisiana bayou despite relocating to an urban world. In this factory and refinery choked corner of L.A. the macabre is in evidence even in the interstitial aerial shots of tangled freeways where cars look like corpuscles coursing through blood vessels.

As before Pizzolatto's characters seem fated to be cruelly denied whatever they want most.

Frank wants a child with his lovely supportive wife Jordan (Kelly Reilly).

Paul the highway patrolman wants to be returned to duty as a motorcycle cop but that seems unlikely after he gets into a scrape.

Ray wants a comfortable relationship with his young son which seems as far out of reach as this unmet dream I used to want to be an astronaut he says. But astronauts don't even go to the moon anymore.

Yet another way True Detective stays true to its past its darkness.

Even darker than last year this season sets out on one very black journey both visually and tonally. A key scene in the season premiere occurs in a bar perhaps the dimmest bar in TV history where the entertainer a wan young woman with a guitar sings maybe the most melancholy song ever heard. Its refrain This is my least favorite life.

Ahead True Detective is absorbed with least favorite lives which makes it just as fascinating if not more so than ever. But be warned You may long for a flashlight.

You Dont Need a Real Dad to Celebrate Fathers Day

In the last month I've lost count of the amount of emails pinging into my inbox all with one thing in common the title. Celebrate your dad this Father's Day one screams. Make Dad's day another exclaims promoting cheap wine and chocolate last minute gift ideas chosen especially for you.

Except really they aren't chosen especially for me are they They're generated by some computer that has no idea whether I'm close to my dad or whether I even have a father. As it happens my father died nearly eight years ago but it isn't that making those emails grate. It's how exclusive their terms are all referring to that brilliant dad who does so much. One refers vaguely to that someone special but the others keep the preserve of the nuclear family an all American all British ideal.

Sure that's true for a lot of people but in this modern family era where diverse family situations should be accepted doesn't it say something that Father's Day is still promoted in a cookie cutter holiday kind of way Anything outside the cutter doesn't quite make the grade. Funny because Father's Day isn't and shouldn't be to just celebrate our biological fathers. It's for children teenagers spouses grandchildren to celebrate that person who plays the role of a father in our lives regardless of whether we call them dad or not. I call my mum's fianc e by his first name but that doesn't mean I won't be celebrating Father's Day with him as I'm sure thousands of teenagers will be doing with their respective step fathers this Sunday.

I mean I get it I really do. Father's Day is commercialized and these companies aim to maximize on that. In the midst of all the greeting cards and emails though we shouldn't forget that Father's Day isn't a preserve of an elite group of people who have a father. Anyone who has someone who supports them in the way a Father does can celebrate it. Nowadays a father isn't so simple to define you only have to step into a high school classroom to hear about the myriad of different relationships.

So Happy Father's Day for everyone who wants to celebrate it and who should.

Celebrity Family Feud spinoff game show premieres Sunday

Comedian Steve Harvey is bringing the fun of long running game show Family Feud to ABC with a twist. His spinoff show features celebrity families.

He knows a lot of the contestants taking part in the summer series but he promises not to go easy on his friends.

Guess what They're going to make a mistake. There's no way you're going to know all the stuff up on this board. You just can't Harvey said.

Family Feud has been around since 1976. Harvey has his own theory about the show's longevity.

Everybody can play. Everybody can't play 'Jeopardy.' Everybody can't play 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire ' Harvey said. It's really a game about opinions. It's nothing factual so you can sit at home and be smarter than any contestant on TV.

We'll see who's smarter when celebrity families face off against one another. Round one pits Toni Braxton against Anthony Anderson.

It's competitive but all for a good cause.

These are busy people. To take some time out of their schedule stop shooting a movie or taping a show give up their off time to come in and give all the money to their favorite charity that's pretty cool Harvey said.

Celebrity Family Feud debuts Sunday night at 8 p.m. on ABC7.

The Last Ship Season 2 Premiere Spoilers

(TNT)

Tonight was a two hour season 2 premiere of The Last Ship on TNT at 9 00 p.m. ET and we ve got a full recap on the episode for you reporting it live as it airs. The crew aboard the USS Nathan James is being taken over by Granderson s troopers. As Quincy fights to stay alive his family is alerted that they must keep their connection to Quincy a secret. As Amy Granderson s men gain control of the ship they search for the cure to the deadly virus. In the meantime Tom Chandler is hiding out with his family and crew member Burke. As Slattery helps to save Quincy he realizes that the primordial strain of the cure has been hidden from the troopers. Jeter and Green meet up with Chandler. Dr. Rachel Scott is being held hostage by Granderson who is willing to negotiate with her because she needs Scott to get her lab up and running. Granderson allows Scott to go into the streets and treat some of the sick as per her request. Meanwhile a wounded Jeter stays with Chandler s family who has found shelter in a random apartment. Tex is trying to survive on the streets and comes across a kid defending himself. He lets Tex know about what Granderson has been up to. Chandler ends up hiding in the back of a truck filled with bodies in order to get inside the plant. Green and Burke are driving the truck wearing hazmat suits and watching people pick valuables off the dead bodies before they re burned. The two along with Chandler then take on the men at the plant.

As Dr. Scott helps cure the sick on the street one of Granderson s men tells Scott that he didn t know what Granderson was doing when she began her master plan. Scott is subjected to heartbreak as she s only able to treat a child and not the child s mother when she runs out of vaccines with the cure. In the meantime Chandler s family is worrying about him as well as their own survival and Chandler s son Sam gets sick with a fever and vomiting.

Chandler Burke and Green are introduced to a group of underground warlords who are also against Granderson. Chandler s plan is to cut off electricity causing panic in Granderson.

Quincy is being give an IV drip of adrenaline fluid and in the meantime three of the crew members have escaped the watch of the troopers and are loose on the ship. The troopers discover that Quincy s family is on the ship and Quincy s wife agrees to go with them as long as her daughter stays with the crew. They bring Quincy s wife up to see Quincy and threaten her life in order to make him reveal where the primordial strain of the cure is on the ship. Quincy apologizes to his wife and takes out the plug in his bullet hole so that he bleeds to death telling Granderson s men they ll never find it.

Granderson tells her daughter that Quincy ended his life and she requests that her daughter Alisha aids her in her efforts. Alisha tells her to surrender and that she will not help her.

The troopers discover that Foster is pregnant and they take her away after locking Slattery in a room which he escapes from into the ship. Granderson s doctors want to use her unborn child to extract the stem cells from the virus. Tex is disguised as a police officer and makes it inside Granderson s headquarters. He finds Scott who is being helped by one of Granderson s doctors. Scott and Tex see Foster being taken away and Scott realizes what the doctors are going to try to do. As the doctor is about to stab Foster with a cyringe the power goes out thanks to Green who is unaware of what s going on with Foster. Alisha also momentarily escapes her mother who is distracted by the power outage. One of the people in the operating room with Foster decides to help her out and release her restraints. Foster then stabs the doctor with the syringe just as Tex and Scott rescue her.

Back on the ship one of the crew has gotten his hands on a knife and has cut his restraints discreetly passing the knife on to the others so they can fight back at the troopers. How True Detective fell from grace after just one season

Though any critically adored show with a strong debut faces astronomical expectations for its second season HBO s True Detective which premiered its second season on Sunday night has experienced an unusual amount of backlash.

The crime noir anthology which last year starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as troubled cops trying to capture a serial killer in Louisiana was hailed as groundbreaking. McConaughey and Harrelson knocked it out of the park the direction was enthralling and creator Nic Pizzolatto s slow existential writing was strangely captivating. TrueDetectiveSeason2 was a popular hashtag for casting ideas even after the season ended. It landed a Best Drama nomination at the Emmys. Sure the show had its fair share of problems and criticism but it was widely heralded as excellent.

Review True Detective Season 2 New cast new setting same grim self seriousness

That s what makes the decidedly lukewarm reception for the second season so surprising it s rare that a prestige drama falls so fast. Though the premiere garnered some positive reviews there are also plenty of headlines like True Detective Season 2 is a grim ridiculous misfire and True Detective gets off to a slow stumbling start. More urgently the show is missing the buzz that would usually storm back with a highly anticipated show. Why the lack of excitement Here are five reasons why True Detective which now stars Vince Vaughn Rachel McAdams Colin Farell and Taylor Kitsch lost its edge so quickly.

Amid widespread praise quite a few critics also had some problems with the show from its terrible treatment of women dialogue that went from fascinating to utterly ridiculous to its extreme self importance. But with only eight episodes in the first season there wasn t enough time for those things to grate too much on people s nerves.

Now many critics are disappointed that not only did the creator ignore the criticism many issues are back in full force as if he zeroed in on the weakest aspects. It feels like creator Nic Pizzolatto has taken every criticism leveled against True Detective s first season and built a new show out of it The Week explains. That includes the women problem (Vanity Fair In the series s view women are vessels that bad men fill with their pain and moral rot. ) to the dialogue that simply grows tiresome (USA Today It too often sounds ridiculously pretentious and false. )

True Detective Season 2 is the embarrassing television show we deserve

Months after True Detective wrapped up a blog accused Pizzolatto of lifting the script s dialogue from author Thomas Ligotti. (Pizzolatto said he was inspired by Ligotti but the blog said he didn t give the author nearly enough credit.) The story blew up so much that HBO was forced to release a statement calling the charges ridiculous and Pizzolatto also denied it in the strongest terms. That happened around August or right around the time the TV Academy started its Emmy voting and a ton of negative headlines flowed into the pop culture sphere.

HBO also decided to submit the show to the Emmy Awards as a drama instead of a miniseries leading to tougher competition in a much more prestigious category. The show got 10 nominations including best drama best writing best directing and lead actor nods for McConaughey and Harrelson. However Breaking Bad mostly crushed the competition and True Detective only landed a major win for directing. The show and lead acting duo was also nominated at all the big shows (Golden Globes SAG Awards) but mostly went home empty handed. McConaughey finally got the prize at the Critics Choice Awards and TCA Awards.

Many were disappointed by the ending which was a lot of build up for a letdown of a conclusion which led some viewers to look back and question the whole series. As Vox put it the finale closed a sprawling conspiracy laden case with a fairly basic catch the bad guy chase scene and proved to be an emperor has no clothes moment for a lot of people.

The whole flashback/flash forward thing worked well in Season 1 but now it s just confusing. True Detective jumps around and is sadistically unhelpful to the casual viewer who would prefer to know what s happening as it happens The Post TV critic Hank Stuever writes.

It s no secret that the TV audience has anti hero fatigue and True Detective really goes for the whole troubled protagonist theme. Every character in True Detective Season 2 is miserable all the time and after awhile that s just really draining.

Holly Sonders tells critics to lighten up

Holly Sonders was one of the more notable aspects of FOX s coverage of the US Open.

The former Golf Channel personality was hired by FOX Sports to be a part of the network s expanding coverage which included broadcasting the US Open this year. She received plenty of camera time throughout the tournament as the reporter who interviewed golfers following their rounds.

Sonders who played golf at Michigan State was most notably on camera to interview Jordan Spieth after he captured the major. She was criticized for her two question interview one of which was about whether or not he had an outfit in case it went to a playoff Monday.

After receiving some negative feedback Sonders responded on Twitter.

And for those of u hating on my interview w/ Jordan..It's appropriate to end with a smile. He's the US Open champ Lighten up folks )

Holly Sonders ( holly_sonders) June 22 2015

Aside from the interview with Spieth others complained about Sonders outfit which included a short skirt and golf shirt not your traditional reporter wear but the sort of thing you d see on the course.

In a past interview with Golf Digest Sonders explained her style.

I dress the way I dress because style is very important to me. I love being a girl. You can be a pit bull competitor. You can want to kick people s asses in every sport but you can still be feminine and still be sexy.

Sonders questions with Spieth certainly weren t the best but when you re given such a limited time to interview someone it s hard to really get in depth so we ll cut her some slack for it.

Summer solstice 2015 Facts about the longest day of the year

Today June 21 2015 is the summer solstice or the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The exact moment of the solstice this year was 11 39 a.m. CDT. That is the moment when the Earth tilted the most toward the sun and received the most sunlight.

You may squeeze out a few more minutes of daylight on Sunday depending on where you live.

The farther north you are the longer your day will be. For example in Point Barrow Alaska one of the northernmost points in the U.S. the sun will be up all day and not set.

In Key West Fla. the southernmost point in the U.S. the sun will rise on Sunday at 6 39 a.m. and set at 8 19 p.m. EDT for a day length of 13 hours 39 minutes and 41 seconds.

Besides being the longest day of the year the summer solstice also marks the beginning of summer at least by some standards. (Meteorological summer began June 1.)

Of course the longest days of the year do not make for the hottest days of the year.

Through the next couple months the atmosphere and oceans in the Northern Hemisphere will continue to absorb and slowly release energy from the sun.

Even though more energy absorption is taking place on the summer solstice it'll take about another six weeks for us to feel the highest temperatures.

A few other things to know about the summer solstice

The summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer located at latitude 23.5 degrees North. (It runs through Mexico the Bahamas Egypt Saudi Arabia India and southern China.) The sun will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 11 39 am CDT on June 21 2015. For every place north of there the sun is at its highest point in the sky and this is the longest day of the year according to the National Weather Service. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs at the same moment the winter solstice occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. Their days will now begin to get longer while the days in the Northern Hemisphere begin to get shorter. Today may be the longest day of the year but it likely won't be the hottest. According to the National Weather Service there is about a six week lag between the longest day of the year and the warmest average temperatures for most mid and high latitude locations. Even though the summer solstice marks the start of summer for many it's actually the midpoint of the season. Your shadow at local solar noon will be the shortest of the year. At lower latitudes daylight hours are shorter but the sun reaches a higher point in the sky. The summer solstice has one of the earliest sunrises of the year (but not necessarily the earliest). For example Birmingham saw its earliest sunrises on June 8 17 at 5 37 a.m. CDT. Birmingham's sunrise on Sunday will be at 5 38 a.m. (Huntsville's earliest sunrises were at 5 33 a.m. on June 6 20 but the sun will rise at 5 34 a.m. Sunday. Mobile's earliest sunrises were at 5 49 a.m. CDT June 5 17. Sunday's sunrise there will be at 5 51 a.m.) Twilight in the Northern Hemisphere is longer on the solstice than at any other time of year. The days will slowly grow shorter following the June solstice. The shortest day of the year will be Dec. 21 at 10 49 p.m. CST. The summer solstice usually occurs on June 20 or 21 and rarely on June 22. According to TimeandDate.com the next solstice on June 22 won't be until 2203. The last one was in 1975. Yes you can stand an egg on its end on the summer solstice. But you can do that any day of the year if you are patient. It is a myth that there is a special gravitational balance on solstice days.
