Match Report FIFA World Cup Colombia 2 Uruguay 0

James Rodriguez scored two goals to spark Colombia past Uruguay 2 0 in the teams Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

With five goals the 22 year old Rodriguez took over the scoring lead for the tournament and is easily the breakout star of the World Cup.

The first of his markers may stand as the goal of the tournament a powerful left footed volley that bounced off the crossbar and into the net.

Colombia enters the quarter finals for the first time in World Cup history and will play the hosts Brazil next.

Uruguay was without striker Luis Suarez who was suspended for the tournament after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.

CBCSports ( cbcsports) June 28 2014 Fast fact

Colombia has won more matches at this year s World Cup (four) than in its previous 13 matches in the tournament (three).

They said it

It's historic a dream come true I always wanted to score in the Maracana and now I have Uruguay had a lot of men behind the ball so we needed plenty of movement up front and we got it. Now things are going to get even harder but we can go far. James Rodriguez

We knew Colombia had a very good side one that is able to keep possession and featuring very good players who contribute to the team we had to take risks to reduce the deficit but we came up against a 'keeper who performed extraordinarily well and didn't let us back into the match. But I'm proud of these players once again they showed character and gave it their all. Oscar Tabarez Uruguay manager

What this means

Colombia

In form cohesive and absolutely flying Colombia should (and will) fully believe it can get past a shaky Brazil in the quarter finals on Friday (CBC TV cbc.cafifaworldcup 4 p.m. ET). Either way we re already looking at this clash as the match of the quarter finals.

Uruguay

It seemed like Uruguay was eliminated as soon as the Suarez suspension was announced and that was confirmed on Saturday. Without Suarez in its lineup Uruguay looked like a different team. The tournament may be over but the team will likely be dogged by its star s actions for a long time to come.
