Qualcomm engineer to compete on ABCs BattleBots

SAN DIEGO Deep inside the Qualcomm campus you'd think that robots have taken over.

Donald Hutson is in charge of the robots at Qualcomm's Robotics Research Lab.

Do I like my job Yeah that's an understatement Hutson said.

Hutson is one of the senior support staff engineers.

Basically what I do here is try to innovate and push the boundaries with what can be done with high end processors he said.

Hutson has created robots such as 'The Snapdraggon Cargo' and 'The Snapdraggon Rover.'

They are robotics that could become everyday parts of our lives but for now the retail value is priceless Hutson said.

At night Hutson's robots take on a meaner look.

I call it LockJaw Hutson said.

LockJaw is a 250 pound temper tantrum. It's a combination of smarts and muscle.

We've got to make them smarter safer and more durable Hutson said.

Hutson works on his robots in a safe and secure testing lab.

LockJaw is built for battle which is perfect for 'BattleBots.'

'BattleBots' is a two men enter one man leaves television tournament on ABC. The show is for robots and the smart guys who build them.

The idea of celebrating engineers as rock stars is long overdue said Hutson. I think I'm a poster child of doing what you love every day.

'BattleBots' retuns to ABC10 Sunday June 21 at 9 p.m.
